Second Puberty: What Is It & What Can You Do About It?

If you are currently staring at the screen with horror, sorry about that. Puberty for the first go around wasn’t exactly a wonderful time for most of us, so the idea that we have to go through it again? There’s probably a reason that second puberty isn’t exactly well known, despite the fact that it definitely happens – and it’s not pretty for those who go through it.

Between the ages of 28 and 33 (with some leeway on either side), second puberty is your body adjusting to its new status as a fully-fledged adult. You’ll grow more body hair, your voice will become deeper (this is why most of us can tell how old someone is just from their voice on the phone), and you’ll begin to tire faster. It’s also likely to be the onset of what are referred to as the “signs of aging”, especially those in relation to your skin and body. YIKES!

The one benefit of second puberty is that, unlike the first time around, you’re more able to fight it this time. Over Thirty? Time To Start Taking Care Of Your Body

Life’s all pretty well and good when we’re in our twenties. Eat too much food (Always!)? No worries, your body is on hand to make sure that it doesn’t do too much damage. Overindulged at the work party? Somehow, you’re able to get up as if nothing happened (well, almost). However, that all begins to change as we slide towards our thirties. Once we pass the big 3-0, our body stops playing ball and starts to give us a little bit more trouble than we’d like. However, if you take of your body, then there’s no reason why you can’t feel as energetic and full of life as you did in your twenties!

Exercise:

There’s no getting around it, unfortunately: you need to start exercising. This doesn’t mean you have to start visiting the gym every day, but it does mean that you need to be making sure that you get enough physical activity each day. The key to this, is to find an activity that you enjoy. If you find that you really enjoy long distance running, then it won’t feel like work when you set off on those early morning runs: it’ll be fun!

Treating Your Body Well:

Part of having a healthy body in your thirties is remembering that you can no longer push your body to the limit. You need to be taking it at ease, and making sure that it gets everything it needs to be well. For example, you can’t go out late into the night and then expect to get up early in the morning. Hey everyone and happy weekend! So my friend Charlie girl over at CharlieeStar tagged me in the 13 Reasons Why I’m Happy Challenge and I love these little awards and tags posts so I figured why not. Charlie is going to be featured during my Salute To Summer guest bloggers series so be on the look out for her! But until then, make sure to check out her wonderful blog! Okay, here we go. 13 Reasons Why I’m Happy in no particular order:

  1. I’m waiting for my pot of coffee to cool down to make some iced coffee and I’m really excited about it because I got a new creamer to try last night.
  2. I just walked my two rescue dogs, Gem and Ollie, with my mom and the weather in Ohio is actually acceptable to walk in, as it’s been raining here ALL WEEK.
  3. I’m talking to this really cute guy who’s coming up from North Carolina at the end of the month for my birthday.
  4. My mental health is finally in check, so that’s nice.
  5. There’s a Taco Bell within a mile of my home so that’s a blessing.
  6. I graduated college in December and I’m still happy about that!!
  7. I have a handful of really good friends who I love dearly. Quality over quantity and whatever.
  8. My family, obvs.
  9. All of the wonderful friends that I’ve made through lifewithlilred. I always get so happy every time I think about that!
  10. Bubble baths, face masks, and moscato.
  11. My background as a competitive figure skater has given me some rock solid legs and a sturdy gait that keeps me away from spine surgeons, which is also a blessing haha.
  12. Whenever I’m writing my talon nails click away on the keyboard and I love that.
  13. My personal style. I have a closet full of beautiful clothes, shoes, and accessories. Wonderful makeup, bright red hair, long acrylic nails, piercings, and tattoos and I love it all.

Well that was fun! I thought that this list would be a bit harder to make but I actually feel like I could have kept going, which is a pleasant surprise. I’m not going to tag anyone in this because it’s more up to you if you want to participate in the 13 Reasons Why I’m Happy Challenge, but it was most enjoyable!

It is amazing the difference that a good night’s sleep can make to your physical and mental well-being. Unfortunately, in today’s fast paced world, this is something that is becoming more and more elusive for many of us. In between jobs, hobbies, time with friends, and family commitments, getting your eight hours a night is something that can easily seem like it is just out of reach. Getting yourself into good nightly habits can really make all of the difference when it comes to drifting off. Here are a few techniques that you can try out to help you get the sleep that your body and mind is craving:

Stay on a Sleep Schedule: Getting your body to adapt to a sleep schedule can make a huge difference when it comes to nodding off quickly. Try to keep to your schedule as much as possible on weekends, holidays, and days off as well. This consistency plays a big part in reinforcing a strong sleep-wake cycle. You should establish a nightly routine that helps your body become naturally ready for sleep. Whether this involves yoga, meditation, or reading a chapter of a book, find an activity that works well for you and stick to it.

Watch What You Eat and Drink: Going to bed when you are either hungry or full can make it much more difficult to fall asleep. Try to eat a good meal at least a couple of hours before you go to bed so that you are comfortable. Also, try and limit how much you drink so that you don’t disrupt your sleep by having to get up and use the restroom. You should also try to avoid nicotine, caffeine, and alcohol, which can all disrupt the quality of your sleep.

Create a Comfortable Sleeping Environment: For most people, a room that is cool, dark, and quiet is the best kind of sleeping environment. Light blankets and a couple of fans is the best way to keep cool during the summer months. If you find that too much light it seeping into your room at night, you could try a blackout blind. As for quiet, try sleeping with earplugs in to block out any background noise (like your partner’s obnoxious TV shows!). We should all be aware of the fact that our employer is, in large part, responsible for our well-being at work. If there’s a risk that they could have protected us from and they failed to, then they are to be held responsible. But it’s not all about the fires that break out and the slipping hazards that people fall prey to. If you’re concerned that your workplace is somehow affecting your health, consider some of the more invisible dangers:

Know When Stress Gets Unhealthy: We’ll start with one of the most common risks of any workplace. Stress, some would say, is a natural part of working life. You have to be able to cope under pressure. That’s not to be disputed. However, that doesn’t mean that employers have carte blanche to overload you with environmental factors that can push stress into unreasonable levels. Employers need to be aware of the effects that too much overtime, too many regular night shifts, traumatic workplace events, and overcrowded workloads can have on the employee. Make no mistake. Your mental well-being is also their responsibility, not just the physical.

The thing about stress is that it doesn’t need to come from one big thing. It could be the result of prolonged exposure to a hectic work environment, not necessarily being on night shifts, but just having no time to breathe at work is enough. While you may think that this is just until a project is over, or it’s just until the next holiday season, or whatever other excuse you are using, it doesn’t mean it has no effect on your health. High stress for a prolonged period of time can lead to chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure or ringing in the ears, known as tinnitus. The risks of high blood pressure are obvious to everyone. But did you know that persistent ringing in the ears can affect your hearing health permanently?

Beware of Older Environments: The actual building that you’re working in can sometimes be a danger all in itself, especially if you’re working in an older building. The risk is fast disappearing from the world, but asbestos can still be found in many properties and is a cause of a particularly dangerous form of cancer. For instance, ask your employer to give you more opportunities to get up. You should spend five minutes every hour, at least, in a different posture and you can use that time to do errands for the office. But there are also furniture choices such as ergonomic chairs or adjustable desks that allow for sitting or standing that you could ask your employer to acquire.

A Breath of Fresh Air: The indoor air quality of a lot of businesses is not acceptable. When it gets visible to the point that you can see dust bunnies often in the air or a buildup of debris around the ventilation, demand an air quality test from the employer. Failing to consider the air you breathe can lead to breathing conditions like asthma or cause attacks in those who already suffer from them.

There are a lot of ways that your employer can ensure that any risk of the workplace is being dealt with. However, you shouldn’t always assume that they haven’t done so out of laziness or greed. Talk to them about your concerns and ask them to act on it. If they fail to, then that’s when you should consider getting legal involvement.
