Moving Past Open Mics With Your Indie Band

Moving Past Open Mics With Your Indie Band

Sure, there are people out there who are going to tell you that now is the time to be a musician for the simple fact that there are more avenues than ever to explore. But just because there are a lot more ways to get heard does not mean that it is easier. In fact, being an indie band now is probably harder than ever before for the simple fact that there are so many options. Playing yet another gig at yet another tavern hidden way off the beaten track, the kind of place that makes you pay for your own water is not exactly a great way of making it. Don’t believe us, just look at your band’s communal wallet.

However, just because you’re broke and living at your bass player’s mom’s house does not mean that you should give up the dream. That is because you can still make it and live out your dream of touring some far-off country where fans chant your name in their adorable local accents. It is just about following the rules and knowing how to maximize your chances.

Of course, telling you that and then skipping town would hardly be rock n’ roll of us. So, to help you start living the dream and escape your bass player’s mom’s house (No offense, Barbara.), we have pulled together a list of insider tips and tricks. Check it out:

  1. Get To Know Your Fans Like The Back of Your Hand:

Pennies are short and, for some reason, no record labels seem to hang around open mic night’s held in Big Dave’s Garage (lol.). Basically, there is no sign of an advance floating your way just yet, which means your fans are your biggest financial life jacket. That is why you need to make sure that you are giving your fans something for their loyalty and love. Get to know the names of those guys and girls that are always in the front row. Give your fans a way of listening to exclusive music or interviews by creating a band website and then sharing this sort of content there. Share video recordings of acoustic sessions and behind the scenes banter on your social media pages and make sure that you are replying to any comments or messages that float your way. We used the life jacket analogy for a reason because, in the same way, you need to inflate your life jacket by blowing air into it, you need to give your fans something in return for being so awesome.

 Party over hereeee!

  1. Play Your Strengths As Well As Your Guitar:

Every band has their own strengths, so make sure that you are aware of what yours are and then play to them in every way possible. Just being great songwriters with above average talent and the technical know-how when it comes to uploading your music onto Soundcloud, Youtube, Spotify or whatever else isn’t enough. You need to find other ways to shove your musical abilities into the realms of greatness, and that requires a little bit of magic (aka creativity). If you’re a band that offers more stage presence than the lovechild of Katy Perry and Bruno Mars, then try and play as many live gigs as possible, and maybe even consider getting a residency somewhere. Not only will you get paid, but you will see your star start to rise as more and more people see you. It could be that your sense of humor is your secret weapon, in which case document this and share it, get interviews with niche magazines and little radio stations, and then let this personality of yours show in your music videos. OK Go became famous for their viral worthy music videos, which means that it is totally possible to emulate this approach to success.

bandd2

A cool band name is a must!

  1. Grab People By The Eyes And Ears:

Having a sound that people recognize is one of the most important factors when it comes to carving out some Top Of The Pops like success. But so is having the right visual branding, too. That is why it is worth spending a little bit of time and money (Presumably borrowed from your parents. Barbara, we’re looking at you.) on a graphic designer. This branding of yours is going to be stamped across all of your promotional material – Facebook page profile pictures, website homepage, Instagram, flyers, album covers, t-shirts, USB drives, and pub mic-night posters – and will help establish your place in the industry. Think about some of the greatest and most famous bands to ever walk the boards of the biggest venues. The Rolling Stones, Foo Fighters, Run DMC, Daft Punk. All of these legends created a visual identity so powerful that just their shadows would halt you in your tracks. Basically, get your branding right and you’ll have people want to sport your promotional products, whether t-shirts or posters, and that will spread the good word faster than the flu.

  1. Forget All About A Record Deal. Period.

No one from a record deal is going to turn up at one of your small gigs – or your bass player’s mom’s house (No offense, Barbara.) and hand you the golden ticket that is a record deal. That just isn’t going to happen, nor should you want that to happen. The hard work is there to be enjoyed, used in your music, and make you successful. Most importantly, though, you need to understand that no record label has a secret recipe that guarantees success. They just don’t. Instead, they pick up talent based on their independent success; so they will pick you up based on your independent success. That is what you want. You want to use this as a bargaining chip should the day ever come where labels start to notice you instead of getting snapped up early and dropped or, worse, hung out to dry. Concentrate on what you are doing, focus on your trade and doing your own thing; that is what will lead to success – not trying to chase the money and the labels.

Being in a band is cool. Finding success in something you love is cooler. Prepare for a lot of hard work and with just a little bit of luck, you won’t be crashing on Barbara’s couch for much longer.

Lil Red Loves: Giving Back!

Hello everyone and happy Sunday! If you have been following lifewithlilred for a while or even are just friends with me on Facebook, you will know that there are two particular causes that are very close to my heart. One being animal rescue organizations and the other being the Special Olympics. Canine Lifeline, the rescue group that I volunteer for, and the Special Olympics are both organizations that I have worked with for about three years. Both causes are incredibly dear to me and I am here to talk about why. Let’s discuss:

Canine Lifeline:

I have had many a post on my blog about my precious rescue pups, Gem and Ollie, both of whom came from Canine Lifeline. This rescue group brings dogs up from rural, all kill shelters and tries to find them a new furever home in Ohio. Not only that, but they work hard to cover the medical expenses for the pups that are heartworm positive or who suffered in abusive conditions in their previous owner’s “care”.

My mom, sister, and I try to do everything within our time budget to help out with the needs of this amazing organization. Whether it be walking the dogs, bathing them, washing the blankets in their cages, or giving them some play time, we try to lend a helping hand as often as possible. We also have fun trying our luck at their raffle fundraisers where you can win amazing gift baskets! If it wasn’t for CLL, Gem and Ollie wouldn’t be here to be such a treasured part of our lives. With that in mind, the least we can do is try to give back!

gem1ollie

^^^ Gem is in the first picture and Ollie is straight lounging in the second one. *Featuring Patrick Starfish*

Special Olympics:

This will be my third year of coaching Special Olympics figure skating and I am SO excited for practices to commence in October. I have been working with people who have special needs for roughly three years, as well, and I can’t imagine being in a better, more rewarding field. Compliments to about ten years of competitive figure skating, I have been able to use my somewhat forgotten skills to help my students grow as athletes and it brings me so much joy.

Coaching and motivating my athletes in whatever way that I can has led me to wonderful new friendships as well as a weekly workout – it’s really a win/win situation! I live for the practices, the actual Special Olympics games, and the celebration banquet when it is all over. Seeing my students enjoy themselves and succeed in an incredibly difficult sport is all the payoff that I need, and I plan on coaching every year until I physically can’t do it any more. Plus, Coach Sarah has an excellent ring to it!

^^^ Team picture!!! ❤

There is nothing better than volunteering your time, energy, and skills to an organization that is special to you. And, of course, monetary donations are also much appreciated, especially to both of my above causes, which are nonprofit.

And speaking of nonprofit organizations, if you are helping to plan a fundraising event for one of your causes, then the services at Eventbrite are a great place to start. Your raffle or dinner will be sure to be a hit with Eventbrite’s event planning, promotions, and social sharing tools to help your favorite cause reach new audiences and, of course, earn some money.

Lil Red Loves: Giving Back and I hope that this inspired you to help out with a cause that is meaningful to you! Which organization do you volunteer for? How do you give back? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

The Old College Try

The Old College Try

Hi everyone and happy weekend! So this past Thursday I decided to give going to see a therapist a shot. Things in Lil Red’s world have been anything but perfect lately, so I thought I would try my hand at going to have a chat with a professional for the first time in years. Don’t get me wrong, I have friends that I can talk to when I’m feeling GLUM, but who wants to spend BFF time rehashing the most depressing stuff ever? Not me.

I saw a therapist all throughout high school and shortly after and it always seemed to help. And, I have to say, that it definitely felt good to be able to unload some major burdens onto someone who doesn’t know myself or my family a couple of days ago. I’ve been feeling incredibly overwhelmed and depressed as of late and I’m over it. I’m stressed out constantly and I need to just be able to vent to someone and then get up and walk away from it until next time.

I felt a little bit better after my first hour long session on Thursday, which is way better than feeling one hundred percent miserable. AND I have my appointments scheduled for the rest of September and all of October to work on getting these blues shaken away. I felt pretty proud of myself for actually attempting to do something instead of just wallowing in my own misery until things start to get better. I am definitely looking forward to next week’s session!

I’m giving therapy The Old College Try again and I’m excited to start making some improvements for myself. How do you deal with the major blahs? Has therapy helped you now or in the past? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Woot Woot!

Hey everyone and happy Friday!! It’s a big friggen FIESTA up in here because guess what I did yesterday?! YES, I did eat Taco Bell. BUT that’s not all…

I PURCHASED MY GREYHOUND BUS TICKET TO SEE KATE FROM ANKHOR YOU IN OCTOBER!!!!!!!!!!!

The Bloggers Conference is officially on AF and I’m so excited I can hardly contain myself. Because I ball on a budget, I am saving over one hundred dollars by enduring the nine hour bus ride to Manhattan from Cleveland instead of flying. Of course flying is more convenient and obviously less time consuming but I now have one hundred dollars more for New York shopping money, instead! I’ll take it!

Lil Red has never been to NYC before so, needless to say, I am very excited. Kate and I are about to be two bad mamma jammas taking the city by storm. By storm, I tell ya! We have SO MANY ACTIVITIES planned as well as tons of photo shoots so keep your eyes peeled for many a collaborative post by yours truly and Ankhor You!

And, of course, I am still looking for Halloween themed guest posts for while I am away, so if you are interested in being on lifewithlilred and you can have a post ready by October 10th, then please email me at: sarah.mush6794@gmail.com 🙂

What are some must see sights in New York? What themes should Kate and I do for some Bloggers Conference 2017 photo shoots? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

5 Golden Rules For Freshman College Students

Standard
5 Golden Rules For Freshman College Students

It’s that time of year when thousands of fresh-faced, wide-eyed students find themselves in an unfamiliar environment: a college campus. For the best part of the first few weeks, this will have been nothing but one dizzying blur of names, new buildings, streets, and fiddling with a laundry machine to get the blasted thing to work. Now that the whirlwind has passed, it’s time to start getting serious (Well, a little). Below, we take a look at those five golden rules which will ensure that your college experience is as awesome as you are.:

Get Your Money Sorted:

Sorry people, we hate to break it to you, but you’re broke. Maybe not totally broke, but you’re not exactly flush for cash and, as such, you’re going to spend more time than you’d like counting pennies and familiarizing yourself with the less quality toilet paper. To avoid financial problems later on down the line, create a budget. It’s simple: after rent, and other important things have been subtracted, divide all of the money that you have by the number of months it needs to last. Then, do as Charles Dickens did and use only the amount of money you’re able to spend every day. Easy-ish!

Learn To Fit Everything In:

Now, let’s see. You have classes, assignments, activities, social groups, sports games, and TV shows to catch up on. Sounds like a lot, doesn’t it? That’s because it is. You won’t be able to do everything unless you’re taking steps to make sure that your body can handle it. Keep a can of Monster Energy nearby during studying and classes to be at your peak level of focus. Learn how to say no to social invitations and, if you’re going to skip anything, then make it the sports game, not class!

Don’t Forget The Homies:

You’ve emerged as a beautiful butterfly on campus, but remember those days when you were just a caterpillar? That world still exists, and you’d be foolish to turn your back on it just because you have new and exciting things to occupy your time with. Your friends and family back home will continue to be the best support network you have, even if they’re hundreds of miles away. Try to visit as often as you can, and make sure that not too much time is passing in between phone calls.

Try New Things:

It sounds like a cliche, but there will never be a better opportunity to try as many new things as you wish in college. See something that you’re even vaguely interested in? Try it. What’s the worst that can happen? A half hour wasted at a club which you thought would be fascinating? You might just stumble upon something you love.

Don’t Worry So Much:

There’s a lot of pressure and anxiety present in first-year students, but if we could plead with you to do just one thing, it would be: don’t worry so much. Remember that no one really knows what they’re doing, so act like you have confidence and hey, you probably will! Now have fun!

Freshman year at college can be a blast, if you let it be. Of course, keep your grades up and study hard – but you have a whole new world to explore on campus. Now get to it!

Mini Halloween Guest Bloggers Series, Anyone?

Hello, hello one and all and happy Hump Day! So as you all know, I am venturing to the Big City to hang out with one of my BFFs, Kate, from Ankhor You in mid October. We are both ecstatic to finally be hanging out for our “Bloggers Conference” after literal MONTHS of non stop texting and almost weekly FaceTime dates. It’s going to be a blast and once I return to Ohio, we will be spamming our blogs with tons of collaborative fun.

However, while I’m away, I would love to host a mini guest bloggers series on my page so that I can fully enjoy my vaca with the knowledge that lifewithlilred is in good hands. And what better way to do that than by inviting my blogging friends to celebrate Halloween with my readers?!

I absolutely LOVE Halloween. A little known fun fact about Lil Red is that my first job was working as an actor in a haunted house for two years. With that being said, I love the horror genre, I obviously live for haunted houses, and there is nothing better than attending a boozy costume party.

For this guest bloggers series, I want it all. Your best costume ideas (store bought or DIY), a funny or scary Halloween experience, your favorite Halloween treats (or tricks!), and how to guides on applying the perfect costume makeup.

Because this is a mini series, I am going to need five posts, but am willing to increase it by a few depending on the response. So, if you are interested in turning lifewithlilred into Halloween Heaven, please email me at sarah.mush6794@gmail.com with your post ideas! THANKS!!!! -Sarah

Cleaning Out My Closet

Standard
Cleaning Out My Closet

Hi everyone and happy Tuesday! Okay. We all know by now that I am a clothing hoarder. Everything from accessories and shoes to purses and a closet full of gorgeous duds – I have a lot of it. It’s no secret that I love to shop, BUT it’s also not a secret that I rarely do a closet overhaul because I never know when I might need that five year old cardigan!!

My clothes make me happy to look at, but even I have to admit that it was becoming a chore to squeeze new purchases into my overflowing closet and dresser. It really had me wishing I had a team like those at Closets Etc. to help me organize the clothing chaos! Alas, it was left to little old me so I made an effort to go through my clothing collection and take the rejects to Plato’s Closet and then donate the items that they didn’t want. I have to say – it was really hard!!

During my closet clean out, I tried to follow the “if I haven’t worn it in a year, get rid of it” rule. However, this proved to be pretty difficult since I really do wear everything that I own. When I go on shopping trips, I purchase things that I know that I will get a lot of use out of. I am mindful of the quality of the piece that I’m considering and if it will still be in excellent condition one, two, or five years from now. So, with that in mind, you can see how this overhaul was a struggle. It was seriously almost like trying to decide which one of my two beloved dogs that I like the least. Lol, as you can see – I really love my clothes!!

Despite what myself and the good lord knows was a difficult task, I was able to manage filling up my vacation bag with clothes and accessories to take to Plato’s Closet. Although I do try and wear all of the pieces in my wardrobe as often as I can, there definitely were some items that haven’t been in the spotlight for quite some time. Maybe not an entire year’s worth of time, but long enough that I could picture myself without having the top, bottoms, etc. So, into the bag it went.

I would be a liar if I said that I wasn’t pleased with myself. Even though I had a hard time with my closet clean out, I still managed to purge a decent amount of stuff. With an “I just finished a marathon” smile on my face, I made my way to Plato’s Closet to see if I could get myself at least a tank of gas with my fallen clothing friends. I had a pretty good feeling about this, because I take excellent care of my clothes to the point where my wardrobe looks like it’s filled with brand new pieces. But:

APPARENTLY PLATO’S CLOSET DIDN’T THINK SO!!!

Plato’s Closet baffles me – which is why I don’t even like going into the store. They always seem to take the clothing that I wasn’t confident that they would want but threw in the bag anyways, rather than the actual nice pieces that I have to offer. Out of the lovely fall coats and sweaters that I was willing to part with, they ended up taking the random odds and ends of my unwanted items, instead.

It was just confusing to me as to how I only received seventeen dollars for clothing that I know will be marked up to an ungodly price. Does this sound petty? Yes. But it’s okay, because everyone who has sold to Plato’s Closet before has thought that so it definitely needed saying. Of course, I’m happy to be rid of some if the items collecting dust in my closet, but there’s always going to be that “wtf” confusion when an old T-shirt was chosen rather than something with the tags still on it (Gifts! I buy my clothes to wear, remember?)!

Am I bitter? I’m always bitter. But, I did get a tank of gas out of my closet cleaning Plato’s Closet excursion, which is what I set out to do, so it’s cool. (It’s not.)

Cleaning Out My Closet proved to be immensely difficult and the payoff was minimal, but I’m glad to have gotten it over with! What are your closet cleaning tips? What are your thoughts on Plato’s Closet? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Know Someone Who Is Retiring? These Gifts Are The Perfect Send Off

Retirement is something that many of us look forward to as we get older. The chance to throw in the towel when it comes to getting up early every day, doing the long commute, or simply just not doing a job that you weren’t passionate about. For others, retirement is a new chapter in their lives. But, sometimes, it can be a difficult change to go through. Leaving a workplace, especially if you have been there for a long time, can be quite a hard phase of your life to experience. So, if you find yourself saying goodbye to a work colleague of yours due to retirement, you and your coworkers might be considering a gift. To get you started during your brainstorming session, here are some ideas that could be the perfect way to say good bye:

A “This Was Your Working Life” style scrapbook:

If you are quite the crafty sort, then something like scrapbook could be right up your alley. You and the retiree’s colleagues could each take a page to share your thoughts and well wishes for the next chapter in their lives. You could also include mementos like business cards, letter headed paper, logos, and even pictures from over the years of working there. The beauty of this sort of gift is that it is very personal and sentimental, and will be lovely for your coworker to look back on in the years to come.

Something personalized and fun:

Maybe the person retiring had a great sense of humor or loved novelty style gifts. This is when you can get to researching online to find more unique gifts like retirement koozies or personalized pint pots or glasses. A personalized gift shows great thought and consideration to the person and will be the perfect keepsake.

The classic flowers or a bottle of something they love:

Sometimes sticking with the classic gifts will suit your work colleague better, which is why the big bunch of flowers and/or a bottle of their favorite drink could be the best sort of gift to buy them. Accompany this gift with a card that all of you have taken the time to write in. The understated gifts can often times work the best.

Make up a retirement survival kit:

Whether you want to create something yourself or seek out a company that will provide it for you, a retirement survival kit can be quite a funny as well as a thoughtful gift for your colleague. Things included can be a balloon so that you start off retirement with a bang, a toothpick to pick out the very best of their day, and money towards the retirement fund. The options are endless, and websites like Pinterest are full of anecdotes that you can include.

A “Happy Retirement” Plaque:

Being appreciated is one of the best feelings in the world, so why not give your recently retired colleague a retirement award? You and their other coworkers can order a fancy-looking plaque and have it customized with well-wishes from everyone. The present is bound to get a laugh from your coworker. You never know; they may even display it on their living room shelf.

A digital gift or a framed photograph:

Finally, you could make up a video send off where everyone records a message or have a picture printed and framed for your coworker. Digital gifts are great because they are always just a click away on the computer, and the time taken to get the picture or create the video won’t go unnoticed.

Although it will be sad to have a favorite coworker retiring, it is certainly something to be celebrated. Make happy memories to send him or her off with and use the ideas above to create the perfect gift!

Pajama Party: My Calvins Pt. 3 Edition

Pajama Party: My Calvins Pt. 3 Edition

Hi everyone and happy Sunday! I hope that all of you are having a wonderful and relaxing weekend. As you guys know, one of my major guilty pleasure purchases is pajamas. To me, there is absolutely nothing more luxurious than taking a nice, long bubble bath, snuggling up in some darling PJs, and crawling into bed. It’s a cheap evening in, but it always leaves me going to bed feeling like a million bucks.

There is really no better time for cozy pajama purchasing than the present, because the fall chill has definitely hit Ohio. With that in mind and the whopping twenty dollar price tag from TJMaxx, it was hard to say no to this Calvin Klein shorts and Henley sleep set. Take a look:

ckkk

^^^ Peep that perfectly folded top! Compliments of four years of retail work, baby!

So a shorts and thermal set seems pretty counterproductive for a crisp fall evening, right? WRONG. This set is actually perfect for me, because one of my favorite things in the world is sleeping underneath a mountain of blankets but having the ceiling fan on and the windows wide open. This long sleeved shirt and short set is basically the clothing equivalent of that feeling and it is So. Freaking. Comfy!!!

My pajama collection is admittedly hitting maximum capacity, but one more Calvin Klein set never hurt anyone! Seriously, next time I’m at TJs, remind me not to step foot in the pajama department, because this always happens. Lol, I can’t say that I’m all that mad about it, though! 😉

So there you have it, another Pajama Party: My Calvins Pt. 2 Edition style! What are some of your guilty pleasure purchases? Who else is an avid lover of pajamas? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah
