Now that spring has seen it’s last few days and summer is finally on its way, it’s time to talk about health. Our health matters differ from winter to summer. When the months warm up, we have certain things that we need to prioritize over others. With the sun coming out in full force and the days lasting longer, we can often focus on having fun over looking after ourselves. But, with these key areas, all you have to do is take precautionary steps now, and your health will be covered all summer long:

Protect Your Skin: When we’re exposed to the sun, our skin can suffer. So, it’s important to take a few precautionary measures before you head out for the day. Along with trying to avoid being in direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day, you should aim to take breaks in the shade as much as possible. When your skin is exposed to the sun, regardless of how cloudy it may seem, you need to make sure that you wear sunscreen. That way, you’re protected from harmful rays and have a better chance of staying safe and sun burn free.

If you find yourself craving summer heat, but don’t want to risk burning, a trip to the sauna can help scratch that itch. There are distinctive benefits to a traditional sauna experience and one that uses infrared sauna light therapy. Explore both options to find the setting that is right for you!

Tackle Those Allergies: Having allergies can be hard during the summer months. Constant Blocked Nose? Here’s What Could Be Causing It

All of us know how annoying it is to have a blocked nose. Typically, we experience them when we’re sick and have a cold or the flu. They cause our whole heads to feel blocked up and it’s hard to breathe, which makes sleeping a real task. But, for a lot of people, blocked noses don’t stop at colds. There are loads of people that go to sleep with a stuffy nose every night and wake up with the same problem each morning. The question is, why? What’s causing your blocked nose if it’s not a cold or flu virus? Let’s take a look:

Airborne Allergens:

Perhaps the biggest cause of a chronically blocked noses is having an allergic reaction to something in the air. There are loads of different airborne allergens around that can cause this and most are extremely common. As it says in this blog post, there are lots of things lurking in your home that could be making you ill. Airborne allergens are just one example. If you have a pet, then they could give off allergens that you breathe in and have a  reaction to, causing your nose to block. Another extremely common allergen is dust. Where there’s dust, there are dust mites, which create airborne allergens that seriously block up your nose. In fact, if you don’t have any pets and you keep waking up throughout the year with a blocked nose, it’s probably due to a dust allergy.

Nasal Polyps:

Did you know that there’s a thing that can grow inside of your nose and cause congestion? It’s true, and they’re called nasal polyps. There’s no need to be too alarmed, these growths are benign, and you probably won’t even notice that they’re there. Essentially, they’re just lumps of tissue that swell up and grow inside of your nose, causing a constant blockage. You might be able to notice them if you shine a light up your nose and look in the mirror (if you’re ever feeling extremely bored). They’re typically caused by other problems in the nose. If you’ve had a really severe cold, sinus infection, or even allergic rhinitis, then this could cause a polyp to grow that keeps your nose blocked even when the previous problems are solved.

Deviated Septum:

You know that little hard thing that separates each nostril in your nose? It’s called your septum, and it can be the cause of your blocked nose. Most of us are lucky enough to be born with a normal and straight septum. Others are born with a deviated one that causes your nostrils to be different sizes. As a result, one nostril can be so small that it’s always blocked. Deviated septums can also occur after physical injuries to the nose. #ouch

If you have a blocked nose all year round, then it’s most likely down to one of these three problems. Try and remove any airborne allergens from your room or take antihistamines to see if that helps your blocked nose. If it does, the problem was probably allergy related. If not, it’s probably one of the other two things and you might want to get it checked out so that you can breathe easy!

Get in the know, and constantly seek new horizons within your work – this is how medicine succeeds and how you might succeed, too.

Consider Different Paths: Finally, it is worth bearing in mind that there are always other paths within medicine that you might be able to consider. Knowing and remembering this when things get tough will help you to remember that you can always change paths slightly while still remaining in the world of medicine. Sometimes this is far preferable to staying in your role and merely hoping to succeed.

It is amazing the difference that a good night’s sleep can make to your physical and mental well-being. Unfortunately, in today’s fast paced world, this is something that is becoming more and more elusive for many of us. In between jobs, hobbies, time with friends, and family commitments, getting your eight hours a night is something that can easily seem like it is just out of reach. Getting yourself into good nightly habits can really make all of the difference when it comes to drifting off. Here are a few techniques that you can try out to help you get the sleep that your body and mind is craving:

Stay on a Sleep Schedule: Getting your body to adapt to a sleep schedule can make a huge difference when it comes to nodding off quickly. Monday Update: Take A Walk (Pt. 2!) Edition

Hiii everyone and happy Monday!! I hope that all of you had a fabulous and fun weekend. So, if you remember from last week’s Monday Update, I started *gasp* running/walking AKA rawking and it’s going okay! I’m actually feeling pretty happy because I was able to add another lap to my time at the track since last week, meaning that I am now rawking for a mile and a half.

I have still been going to the track with my mom (in fact, we just went last night), but when she can’t go, I have taken to running around my neighborhood. This is actually kind of fun because it gives me a change of scenery, especially when I venture into the neighborhood below mine. I have also decided that even though I don’t have one of those snazzy arm bands to hold my iPod in place, that I am okay with carrying my device as I run so I can have some music to keep me company.

As you guys know, I am an emo kid at heart, so my running soundtrack has consisted of a lot of AFI and My Chemical Romance. But, I also have been enjoying listening to Kendrick Lamar, Kid Cudi, and Kanye West when I’m feeling saucy. Having my music playing while rawking definitely seems to make the time go by faster and even though my hands sweat profusely while carrying my iPod, it’s been worth it!

I’m feeling really proud that I was able to add an additional lap to my little evening jaunts and my next goal is to rawk two miles within this month. Getting my pre ex-boyfriend body back is a big fat pain in the ass, but I kind of like it – so here’s to getting to the two mile mark soon!

We think that our home is a safe and healthy haven for our family and that we don’t have to worry as opposed to when we are outside in the open world. But there are actually a lot of hidden dangers lurking in our home. And a lot of people don’t even realize what they are. Create a Dust Free Environment: When we are busy in our life, it’s easy to not keep on top of cleaning our home. Totally understandable. But, if anything, try to keep up on dusting. Monday Update: Take A Walk Edition

Monday Update: Take A Walk Edition

Hi everyone and happy Monday! I hope that all of you had a fantastic and relaxing weekend. So, technically, this Monday Update should be called Take A Walk/Run Edition (a rawk?) but Take A Walk sounds a bit more snazzy so we’ll just go with it. ANYWAYS, this past week, my mom decided that she would like to give walking at the nearby middle school track a go and asked if I would like to join her. Because I am a loving daughter and also because I’m trying to get my beach body in check I said, albeit a little grudgingly, “sure”. ALSO, the “comfort” few pounds gained when I was still with my ex-boyfriend are no joke so, I repeat, I really want to get my beach body in check.

So, my mom and I made our way to the track and because simply walking bores me, I thought that I would try to run as much as I could before taking a walking break. And LET ME TELL YOU, the ol’ smoker’s lungs were on FIRE. Despite this, I walked/ran (rawked) a mile and a quarter and felt pretty happy about it. Granted, it felt like pure and utter torture, but it was sort of fun? Can torture be fun? I guess the answer is YES.

My mom and I have gone to the track five times within the week during the evening and each time, I’ve been able to run a little bit longer than I was able to the last time. This is exciting to me. For those of you who don’t know, I was a competitive figure skater for a long time but gave it up when I was about sixteen (I’m 22 now). I miss doing things that involve athleticism (even though shopping is a sport, damnit), so it felt really good to be able to do something to get the blood pumping again and put my legs of steel to use.

Am I going to be the next Usain Bolt any time soon? Absolutely not. But I would be ecstatic if I could make it around the track once (which is a quarter mile) at a run without stopping to walk. It’s nice to have goals to accomplish even if they’re small and it’s also fun being able to be with my mom even if we’re just waving at each other from our different locations on the track.

I never thought that I’d say that I was actually looking forward to going for a rawk and getting sweaty, but I definitely find myself looking forward to it during the day. I even want to start hitting the ice again, although it would be just for fun. Being motivated in an athletic way for the first time in a long time feels good and I know my beach body goals will be achieved sooner or later. So here’s to bikini shopping not being a total pain this year!

We should all be aware of the fact that our employer is, in large part, responsible for our well-being at work. If there’s a risk that they could have protected us from and they failed to, then they are to be held responsible. But it’s not all about the fires that break out and the slipping hazards that people fall prey to. If you’re concerned that your workplace is somehow affecting your health, consider some of the more invisible dangers:

Know When Stress Gets Unhealthy: We’ll start with one of the most common risks of any workplace. Stress, some would say, is a natural part of working life. You have to be able to cope under pressure. That’s not to be disputed. However, that doesn’t mean that employers have carte blanche to overload you with environmental factors that can push stress into unreasonable levels. Employers need to be aware of the effects that too much overtime, too many regular night shifts, traumatic workplace events, and overcrowded workloads can have on the employee. Make no mistake. Your mental well-being is also their responsibility, not just the physical.

The thing about stress is that it doesn’t need to come from one big thing. It could be the result of prolonged exposure to a hectic work environment, not necessarily being on night shifts, but just having no time to breathe at work is enough. While you may think that this is just until a project is over, or it’s just until the next holiday season, or whatever other excuse you are using, it doesn’t mean it has no effect on your health. High stress for a prolonged period of time can lead to chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure or ringing in the ears, known as tinnitus. The risks of high blood pressure are obvious to everyone. But did you know that persistent ringing in the ears can affect your hearing health permanently?

Beware of Older Environments: The actual building that you’re working in can sometimes be a danger all in itself, especially if you’re working in an older building. The risk is fast disappearing from the world, but asbestos can still be found in many properties and is a cause of a particularly dangerous form of cancer. But it’s best to have your employer perform a thorough check on the property if you’re concerned with the age of it, first. For instance, ask your employer to give you more opportunities to get up. You should spend five minutes every hour, at least, in a different posture and you can use that time to do errands for the office. But there are also furniture choices such as ergonomic chairs or adjustable desks that allow for sitting or standing that you could ask your employer to acquire.

A Breath of Fresh Air: The indoor air quality of a lot of businesses is not acceptable. When it gets visible to the point that you can see dust bunnies often in the air or a buildup of debris around the ventilation, demand an air quality test from the employer. Failing to consider the air you breathe can lead to breathing conditions like asthma or cause attacks in those who already suffer from them.

There are a lot of ways that your employer can ensure that any risk of the workplace is being dealt with. However, you shouldn’t always assume that they haven’t done so out of laziness or greed. Talk to them about your concerns and ask them to act on it. If they fail to, then that’s when you should consider getting legal involvement.

Success is one of those objective terms that can be used to measure an array of things. For example, when we say that someone is successful, we could mean that they are wealthy. But, success isn’t just about one’s net worth. It’s a way of measuring how often you get things right, regardless of the subject.

To a lot of people, success is all about leading a balanced lifestyle and one that feels fulfilling. If you’re someone that feels like they struggle to do just about anything in their life, chances are you aren’t feeling very successful as a person!
