Groovy Movies: Crawl Edition

Groovy Movies: Crawl Edition

Howdy! This past week, I took one of my clients to see a new creature horror movie called Crawl. Normally, I am not big on the flicks with giant animals terrorizing people, but this one was highly entertaining, super suspenseful, short and sweet, and the actors weren’t half bad, either. Take a look at the trailer and then read on to find out my rating for this new release:

^^^ And, as always, I have no rights to this video.

Long story short, a hella hurricane is happening in Florida and when swim star, Hayley, has heard nothing from her dad, she ventures to their old home to investigate. He is nowhere to be found inside of the house but the family dog, Sugar, leads her to the crawl space beneath, which she begrudgingly goes into.

After some searching in the claustrophobic bottom layer of the house, Hayley finds her dad severely injured with an alligator bite to the shoulder and leg compliments of the one that entered the premises through a flooded drain pipe. And, to make matters worse, there’s not one but two of them. And, to make matters worse AGAIN, the crawl space is beginning to fill with water thanks to the major hurricane happening. So, their options are to drown or figure a way out despite the massive gators making home there…

And save the dog, of course.

Like I said earlier, these types of movies are normally not my cup of tea. But, I thought that Crawl was an absolute HOOT. It was a really fun watch and the suspense was nonstop thanks to a combination of things like the close quarters of the crawl space, the flood waters steadily rising, and oh yeah – the big ass alligators. I also liked how this movie was relatively short at an hour and a half because it moved quickly and made the anticipation of the flood waters rising feel even more desperate.

Hayley and her dad were also both very likeable and I found myself rooting for them and their safety the entire movie. So, whenever a setback would happen or a plan didn’t work, it definitely felt like a major blow. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this movie and I would give it a seven out of ten. It was a great summer flick to see in theaters and I would for sure recommend it!

Who else has seen Crawl? What were your thoughts on it? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Creating Healthier Habits Around The House

Creating Healthier Habits Around The House

The topic of health comes up in conversation on a regular basis between your friends and colleagues. There is always a new fad to try out or a trendy eco-friendly switch to consider, but what can really be done to improve your health? Your home is a place in which you need to feel completely comfortable and confident, so you should only make changes if you are 100% on board. Whether you’re going through a renovation and looking for more energy efficient solutions or you have been struggling with your personal health, there are a number of alterations you can make around the house, like some of the following:

Improving Energy Efficiency:

One of the first major changes you can make around your home is your energy consumption. We have grown so accustomed to electronic devices, gizmos, and gadgets, but we don’t realize the impact they are having on our bank balances and the world around us. If you are really looking to make an impact, why not consider Solar Installation? This method will not only save you money, but it will also reduce the number of greenhouse gases that are emitted into the atmosphere. Speak to a specialist today and they will be able to inform you on the best steps to take when it comes to installing solar panels in your home.

Reducing Waste:

Households around the country are producing more waste than ever before. Not only is this having a negative impact on the environment, but it is also creating a bad habit among society that needs to be broken. Waste can come in many shapes and forms, but the main culprit is plastic. When you look at the amount of disposable plastic you use each week, it can add up to a considerable amount. When this waste is dumped into landfills or oceans it can take decades to decompose, which is having a negative effect on wildlife. Next time you head out shopping, try to take a reusable bag with you instead of picking up new plastic bags from the store. Opt for products that have less packaging too, as this will help reduce waste around the house.

Eat Fresh:

Buying local produce from your farmer’s market is much more environmentally friendly and healthy than shopping in the big supermarket chains. Not only will you be supporting local businesses, but you will be reducing your carbon footprint by eating fresh and local produce regularly. And, of course, it’s always good to eat your fruits and veggies!

Re-Evaluate Your Household Products:

Instead of spraying hazardous chemicals in the air, there are a number of natural cleaning products you can turn to for your household chores. Not only do regular cleaning products waste a lot of plastic packaging, but they also pollute the air around our homes. You can make natural cleaning products yourself using a lot of the ingredients that are already in your cupboard. Look online for some inspiration and start making your own cleaning sprays now.

Combat Water Waste:

Saving water around the house is actually incredibly easy. It doesn’t take much thought on your part and it will benefit your bank balance, too. Try installing a shower timer in the bathroom, so that you are more aware of how long you’re spending in there. A five minute shower each day is much more eco-friendly than a bubble bath or a ten minute shower. Similarly, you can also install a device in your toilet which reduces the amount of water that is used when you flush.

Nobody will ever achieve complete perfection when it comes to their home habits. However, there are so many changes we can all make for the better, so start with the tips above today!

Lil Red’s Fresh Face Tips & Tricks

Lil Red’s Fresh Face Tips & Tricks

Hiii! Since I posted some no makeup selfies on Facebook and on the blog, I have had a lot of people inquire about my skin care routine. I have to say that I’m flattered, because I do take really good care of my skin and my complexion is something that I’ve always liked about myself. I have never had a pimple in my life, and I thank the stars for that. I always tell people that if I had to deal with acne during the major brunt of my mental health struggles during my teenage years, I honestly don’t know if I would be here today.

That sounds extreme, but it’s the truth. If skin problems was something that I was going through during teenager-hood (Which is completely normal!) on top of everything else, that might have been the straw that broke the camel’s back. So, from about freshman year on, I’ve stuck to a very strict skin care regimen and it works! And, now I am going to share some of my tips and tricks with all of you.

picss2

1) Double Wash

I have been double washing my face during my morning showers for years and I think that is one of the main reasons for my clear skin. Depending on what products I have handy, I will use a regular old cleanser and then a scrub or a charcoal facial bar. I’m bad, and I don’t take my makeup off at night, so I know that I need some extra cleansing power to get all of the gunk off from the previous day. And, whether you take your makeup off or not, a double wash is still good to get off any grime or dead skin lingering around that the first wash doesn’t always remove.

If your skin is sensitive, then a second wash can be incorporated every other day or every third day to prevent yourself from drying out. And, make sure the products you’re using are creamy in texture. But, if your skin is normal or problematic, give yourself a daily double wash and see what happens!

2) Skin Care

I don’t have a magic face mask or home remedy, but I do have some skin care products that I couldn’t live without. After I double wash in the shower my skin care routine goes as follows:

Micellar water: I start with wiping my face down with micellar water to act as a toner and get my skin fully ready to make the best use of the next three products I apply.

Serum: A good serum is a must. I always recommend using something with Vitamin C, gold, or anything with the words “rejuvenating” or “revitalizing” in it. All of the previously listed things will help with brightening your skin, giving you a youthful glow. This is when you know your skin care is working right.

Eye cream: I’ve been using eye cream since high school and I swear by The Body Shop’s Nutriganics cream. Wrinkles, crows feet, and dark circles around your eyes can really age you, so it’s crucial to work in an eye cream to your regimen if you don’t have one already. It’s all about youthfulness, after all!

Moisturizer: And, finally, a moisturizer. This will complete your skin care routine by giving you a peaches and cream finish. But, do be sure that you’re not over hydrating your skin, which can lead to oiliness. It’s all about balance. If I’m using a thicker, oil based serum, I stick with a lighter moisturizer. But, if the serum I’m using at the time is thinner, then I go with a heavier moisturizer to make sure I’m still getting hydrated. Also, pay attention to the weather. You might have to go with a heavier moisturizer during the cooler months and something lighter during the summer.

3) Hydrate!

I’m sure everyone tells you this, but water, water everywhere is a must for glowing and clear skin. It helps detoxify your body and it keeps your skin from getting dried out. And, then, people wonder why they are having skin issues if all they do is drink sugary beverages all day. I try to drink at least three to four bottles of water a day. It’s great for your skin and it might help you lose a little weight, too. What could be better?!

4) Makeup Mindfulness

The last thing we will be talking about is makeup mindfulness. Be aware of what you’re using when you’re painting your face and notice the reaction your skin is having. No makeup should be making your skin feel oily or greasy. And, be careful of the amount you use on your face. When you really cake a foundation or powder on, it basically suffocates your skin and makes it very easy for gunk to get trapped in your pores.

This is not to say to walk around with no makeup on every day. And, if applying your makeup heavily is what gives you confidence, then do it up. But, just be on the look out for any changes in your skin. If you start breaking out or if you’re starting to feel oily, it might be your makeup that’s causing the problem.

Will the above tricks work for everyone? Maybe. But, they definitely work for me and I had to give the people what they asked for! So, hopefully they will come in handy for you, too.

What are some of your tips and tricks for clear skin? Will you be implementing any of the suggestions above? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Using Keystone Habits To Build A Healthier Daily Routine

Standard
Using Keystone Habits To Build A Healthier Daily Routine

We all have habits that we carry out every day. Some habits are healthy, such as going to bed early and drinking a lot of water. Other habits are not so healthy, e.g. smoking and snoozing the morning alarm ten times. The healthier habits we have, the better our day usually goes. Overall, this can add up to a much more productive, satisfying life. Those with healthy habits tend to achieve more, enjoy life more, and feel their best. Wouldn’t you like to be one of those people?

In this post, we’re going to focus on keystone habits. What’s a keystone habit? A keystone habit is a habit that can impact how you act the rest of the time. They are the habits that can spark chain reactions. If you’re still confused as to what this is exactly, we’re going to go through a few great keystone habits to pick up:

Making Your Bed In The Morning:

Making your bed in the morning takes mere seconds, but it’s a habit that can spark more productivity and a sense of achievement for the rest of the day. People who make their bed without fail get that sense of having completed something great before really getting the day started, and this can have a fantastic impact on mental attitudes.

Drinking A Pint Of Water Before Anything Else:

Drinking a pint of water rehydrates the body after a long sleep, flushes out toxins, and keeps us energized. Doing this before you have your daily coffee will get you off to a great start, and you’ll likely drink more water throughout the day as a result.

Exercising Earlier On In The Day:

This isn’t an essential keystone habit – some people prefer to exercise later on, and that’s fine. However, many people report feeling absolutely unstoppable after a morning workout and, of course, this can directly impact how much a person gets done during the rest of the day.

Journaling:

Journaling can free the mind from wandering and annoying thoughts. It can help you to spot patterns and come up with solutions. It can even help you to reduce your stress levels and increase your productivity! Journaling is a great way to cope with difficult times, too, so if you know you’re going to be heading somewhere like the radiation oncology department, journaling beforehand can help you to deal with your feelings and get into a more positive mindset.

Meditation:

Meditation is said to reduce stress and depression as well as improve sleep and creativity. Even just 5 minutes per day is better than nothing at all.

A Morning Routine That You Enjoy:

Getting up and starting the day with a total morning routine that you enjoy could give you a headstart on the day. For instance:

  • Brush your teeth and wash your face
  • Make your bed
  • Drink a pint of water
  • Read a chapter of a book with a coffee or tea
  • Work out
  • Eat a healthy breakfast
  • Shower and get ready for the day

Doing all of the above in succession will literally make you feel unstoppable and you’re far more likely to have a better day because of it! How will you use keystone habits to build a better daily routine?

Small Steps To Big Changes: Simple Ways To Get Your Health Back On Track

Small Steps To Big Changes: Simple Ways To Get Your Health Back On Track

We’re approaching that time of year when we start to think about the months ahead. As we near the New Year, many of us will be making resolutions. Often, we take vows and make promises to improve our health and boost our happiness, but many people lose interest in resolutions very quickly. Sometimes, this is due to the fact that we tend to be a little too optimistic when it comes to goal setting. If you’re keen to get your health back on track, the key to success lies in taking small steps. Here are some simple measures that will make a massive difference to your health and well-being:

Adjust your sleep routine:

Are you one of those people that doze off in front of the TV every night and then struggle to get up in the morning? If you’re not getting seven to eight hours of quality sleep on a regular basis, modifying your sleep routine is one of the best ways to improve your mental and physical health. You have an internal clock, and it is possible to get into a routine, which will help you get more sleep. Instead of curling up and nodding off on the sofa, go to bed an hour earlier. Rather than hitting the snooze button, get up at the same time every morning. Your body clock will soon adjust to these new times, and you should find that you’re enjoying better quality sleep, as well as more downtime.

Drink more water:

Are you guilty of turning to sodas when you’re thirsty or is your body fueled by coffee? If you don’t drink enough water, this is a really simple resolution to stick to. Aim for two liters of water per day, and carry a bottle around with you so that you can sip and go. If you’re not keen on the taste of water, consider buying sparkling water with a hint of fruit flavor or add sugar-free cordial. Dehydration increases the risk of headaches, muscular pain, fatigue, and dry skin.

Cheers!

Be more active:

It’s very common for people to go on a fitness drive after the holidays. It’s a brilliant move to try and get into exercise, but often, we try and do too much too soon, and we lose interest and motivation. You don’t have to join the gym and go every single day to get in shape. You can increase your fitness gradually, and you can try a whole host of activities. If you know you don’t enjoy running on a treadmill or spinning, consider joining a sports team or trying classes like boxing, Pilates, or high-intensity interval training.

Aim to work out a couple of times a week, and increase the frequency as you get fitter and stronger. Exercise is often used as a means of shifting festive pounds, but it’s so much more than a weight loss tool. Being active reduces your risk for lots of serious physiological health issues, such as diabetes and heart disease, and it’s also proven to lower the risk of depression, stress, and anxiety.

If you’re on a mission to get your health back on track, start by taking small steps and setting manageable goals and watch yourself succeed!

Cleveland Aquarium Pics

Cleveland Aquarium Pics

Hi everyone and happy Friday! I hope all of you had a wonderful week and are looking forward to a fun and relaxing weekend. This past Saturday, I visited the Cleveland Aquarium, and it was mediocre at best for the price of admission. And, we all know that this is no beuno for a gal who balls on a budget! But, I did get some nice pictures of the undersea life that was there so take a look and let’s discuss:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The total cost of admission was twenty dollars as well as a six dollar parking fee and the time spent in the aquarium amounted to barely an hour and a half. This was disappointing to me because, although the displays that were there looked cool, I felt like I wasn’t getting a lot of bang for my buck. The aquarium, in total, was three or four rooms with spaced out displays and, then, two other rooms with full room displays that included a string ray touch tank and the shark tank with a walk in tunnel.

I really enjoyed the shark room and the walk in tunnel was really neat and long in length. However, the other rooms that had spaced out displays featuring aquatic life of different countries left a lot to be desired. There were about three or four tanks per room and that was it. So, it felt more like a large, well decorated pet store than an actual aquarium.

If you are planning a trip to the Cleveland Aquarium, my best advice to you is don’t. You are much better off spending a day at the Cleveland Zoo, which provides you with an excellent value for your money, as it is a whole park rather than just a handful of rooms. It is also cheaper than the Aquarium, too! 😀

What is your favorite activity to do in a big city near you? Who else has a zoo or aquarium close by? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

What Might Really Be Causing Your Headaches

Standard
What Might Really Be Causing Your Headaches

If you find that you are getting a lot of frequent headaches, you will certainly want to find a way to get to the bottom of it. Having headaches all of the time is not the kind of thing that many people can put up with very well for too long, and it makes sense to want to sort it out as early as you can. As it happens, there can be many reasons that you might develop a headache, and it is often necessary to look into the underlying cause before you can find the best solution for your particular situation. In this article, we are going to look at some of the most common causes of headaches, so that you can be sure what you know is causing yours – and hopefully fix it all the sooner:

Stress:

We all experience a lot of stress in our daily lives, and this can lead to many health problems in time if we allow it to overtake us. This is all too easy to do if you are not careful and allow it to worsen, so it is a good idea to make sure that you deal with it as early as possible. One of the possible results of a lot of stress, is that you might experience headaches throughout the day. You can generally tell if it is a stress headache because there will not appear to be any underlying health problems and it will be linked to stressful or triggering situations. Obviously, the way to get rid of such headaches is to remove the source of stress, or to take up stress-busting activities such as meditation and mindfulness exercises.

Poor Eyesight:

If you have eyesight which is gradually worsening, that too can lead to some pretty bad headaches on the whole. You might have a hard time working out whether you are experiencing this kind of headache, but again there will be some telltale signs. Probably the most obvious is that you will have headaches mostly when you are doing a lot of close reading, or possibly while driving and other activities like that. If you are having this a lot, you might want to get an eye exam and see whether your eyesight is getting worse or not. If it is, wearing glasses or contacts might be the answer, and will hopefully reduce headaches, as well.

Dehydration:

We all know the feeling of the hangover headache – all of this is really  dehydration, and if you are frequently dehydrated you will find that you are having a lot of headaches. The best solution here is preventative – in other words, make sure to drink plenty of water at all times. But if you are struggling to do that, you might want to set yourself reminders so that you can be sure of doing it more often and more easily. With any luck, your headaches will disappear, and if they don’t you will at least know that the cause must be something else.

Pop Some Bubly

Pop Some Bubly

Hello everyone and welcome to a post on my latest obsession – Bubly sparkling water! A fact about me is that I am a huge fan of drinking pop, specifically Diet Coke. But, we all know that that isn’t the healthiest of drinks so I am definitely trying to cut back on it. I have always enjoyed drinking sparkling water and the cute as can be commercials for Bubly and Ellen DeGeneres’s Bubly Skybox on her show enticed me enough to want to give it a whirl. I’m glad I did!

bubly1bubly2bubly3

First of all, I LOVE Bubly’s packaging. Something as simple as putting “hi” on the tab makes me smile every time I see it and the color palette is bright and fun. Second of all, it tastes AWESOME. Sparkling water has such a distinctive taste and Bubly brings a splash of apple flavor to it that tastes like it belongs in the drink as opposed to a flavor added as an afterthought.

I have enjoyed all eight cans in the pack of Apple Bubly that I got and my only complaint is that there isn’t enough per package! I’m looking forward to trying all of the Bubly flavors and can’t wait to give the Strawberry one a go next.

Which flavors of Bubly have you tried? What is your favorite pop? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Home Issues From Hell

Standard
Home Issues From Hell

There are so many things that can go wrong with a home that you probably don’t want to think about. In some cases, you might buy a new property and discover that the builder has cut a lot of corners, leaving you with a home riddled with problems. In others, it’s possible that you’ve bought a home and now that it’s starting to age, you’re seeing more issues develop. Either way, it can be useful to know what these issues are, the impact that they can have, and the best way to handle them. Let’s start by thinking about the problem with water:

Water Woes: The issue with water, is that it’s meant to run off of the house, away from the home when it rains. However, some homes with poor builds have guttering that causes the water to pool on top of the roof. When this happens, it can leave a weight on the roof, pushing it down. Eventually, depending on the level of water building up, a cheaper roof could even collapse leaving a very unhappy, soggy homeowner.

If you think that you have an issue like this with your roof, you might want to think about getting it repaired. A roofing contractor can help you resolve the issue, formulating a plan for the repair, and completing it in a timely manner. Your roof might need a complete overhaul or maybe you’ll luck out and it will only require patchwork. Something your contractor might recommend is roof flashing. This directs water away from the home to prevent leaks and damage with folded metal strips like those at Custom COLORBOND® flashings Australia (or your local area). It’s far better to tend to these problems now rather than one day finding that water is pouring through your ceiling and onto all of your possessions.

Don’t forget, that if water does trickle into your home, it’s quite possible that it will cause issues with damp, which will eventually lead to mold. This, in turn, can leave you with a rather nasty insect infestation in your new, soggy environment. At the point when you see hundreds of insects crawling on the inside wall of your home where mold has developed, feel free to scream. I think we all would!

hell11.jpg

#EW

How Much?!? Of course, the problem from hell in your home could also be financial. If you’re paying your energy bill monthly, you could be on a nice little tariff that is more than reasonable. But then, one day you get a letter in the post, stating that your bill will rise by hundreds. What on earth is going on? Usually, this is due to a fault in your boiler or heating system that is costing you a fortune. You need to get this repaired as quickly as possible. The problem is, that if it’s caused your energy bills to fluctuate, the issue is already quite serious. That’s why you want to get regular inspections of systems like this. By doing that, you can avoid a problem creeping up on you and hitting you with an unexpected, painfully high bill.

Time To Yell Timber? If we’re looking at the worst problem for a property owner, it has to be structural issues. Structural issues can be due to poor builds or environmental factors. Either way, it might mean that your home is dangerous to live in and needs and instant, expensive repair job. There’s no way around this, and you can’t sell your way out of it, either. No sensible buyer is going to buy a home with structural issues. The first signs of a problem like this are buckling floorboards and sticking doors.

It’s a special kind of hell when your home goes from safe haven to a money pit, so be on the look out for signs of a shaky build, damp, and poor guttering when you’re house hunting.

Beach Body Health Hacks

Beach Body Health Hacks

Are you hoping to get slimmer and more slender in time for swimsuit season? If the answer is yes, then you are in the right place. The worst thing that you can do to slim down is start a crash diet. Sure, the weight will drop off quickly, but the moment you start eating normally again the weight will creep back on – you may even end up heavier than you were before.

The best thing to do when it comes to getting in better shape is putting your health first. Then, you should start to see your body changing and becoming stronger and leaner. Want to feel shiny and new for the first summer outing by the pool? Then take note of the health hacks below, implement them in your daily life, and you will see results – that’s a promise!

Start Each Day With Yoga or Pilates: Not only are both yoga and Pilates great ways to tone up, but they are also very good for your mental health. The types of meditation-based exercises that both Pilates and yoga offer incorporate gentle stretching to calming music. This helps to improve your flexibility and increase your muscle tone, as well as helping to improve your mental health and stress levels. Remember, to be truly healthy; you need to be mentally healthy, as well.

Have a Glass of Water Before Every Meal: Water acts as a natural appetite suppressant, which means that if you drink a glass of it before each meal, you will consume fewer calories. Water also comes with many other benefits, from improving skin health and boosting your immune system to speeding up your metabolism and preventing fatigue. So, obviously,  it’s definitely something that you want to be drinking more of! Instead of buying filtered water from your local store, visit cleanairpurewater.com and look at the cost of having a water purification system fitted into your home. It might mean making an investment, but if you are serious about being healthier, it’s an investment that will pay for itself in the long run.

Quit Sugar: One of the best things that you can do for your health is to quit sugar. The fact is, is that processed sugars are extremely bad for our bodies. Processed sugars are linked to all sorts of issues, from premature aging to acne, as well as weight gain, of course. If you are serious about being healthier and getting slimmer, then quitting processed sugar is a must. You can eat natural sugars, such as fruit sugars and raw sugar, but not processed sugars.

hack11

So good but so bad!

Start Having Breakfast: They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and they are right. Grabbing a cereal bar as you rush out of the door to work isn’t a suitable breakfast and could actually be harming your health, especially in terms of meeting your weight loss goals. A nutritious breakfast will give you the energy that you need to have a productive day and will stop you from snacking, which is an added bonus. Ideally, your breakfast should be a combination of protein, healthy fat, and carbohydrates. Something like poached eggs, avocado, and rye bread is ideal. It keeps you full and is quick and easy to make.

Don’t expect to feel different overnight but after a few weeks of utilizing the above hacks, you should start to feel much healthier and happier in yourself. Just in time for swimsuit season! Score.
