How To Avoid Running Related Injuries

From warding off depression to getting you in cardiovascular shape, exercise is amazing. Aside from the myriad of health reasons a sport like running gives you, it also offers you some much-needed alone time. Great for your mental and physical health, exercise in general is vital for improving our health and well being. But, there are times when we can expose ourselves to injury and in this blog we take a look at how runners can keep themselves safer and injury-free:

Common running injuries:

From runner’s knee to plantar fasciitis, runners can find themselves facing a host of injuries and there are several key steps that they can take to help prevent them, starting with the right shoes. Sure, you just want to throw on a pair of trainers and head out the door, but it’s essential to make sure you’re wearing the right shoes. Everyone’s a bit different and if you have a tendency to walk with a slight rolling in of the foot or a slight rolling out, then you need to have shoes that support your style.

The best thing you can do is get a gait analysis done by a professional at a running store. They’ll assess your individual style and advise you on a shoe that will support you best. So many of the more common aches and pains can be addressed with something as simple as the right footwear.

Get a check up:

Whether you’re a regular runner or you mix it up a bit, make sure that you get any aches and pains addressed. Find a sports therapy practitioner that can see you regularly and advise you on how to stay injury free.

Complement your sport:

Finally, no matter what you do for cardiovascular activity, find some complementary exercises that will support your body. Think about improving your core strength with planking or some leg weight exercises that are going to strengthen the muscles surrounding your knees to support them better. Stretch it out with some yoga or go for a swim for weightless, low impact exercise.

Give yourself some variety for greater efficiency and think about your body as a whole. When it comes to looking great, first you have to feel great, so allow exercise to give you a mental as well as a physical lift. Find some time to stretch and breathe deeply, whether you just carve out a few minutes of your day for a moment of calmness or whether you go for a more structured approach like mindfulness or meditation.

Your body and mind are unique, so stay in great shape mentally and physically and look after yourself.

Hello hello! During the initial process of getting everything squared away for my apartment, I was a nervous wreck. But, the more I shopped, the more excited I felt about my big move. Retail therapy at its finest! I had the most fun shopping for my larger pieces of furniture and it felt good to check all of the big purchases off of my list. The extra stuff like things from the wall art seen below to hand soap were just the cherry on top of the moving sundae!

floralfloral1floral2

Now, normally I am not a huge floral girl when it comes to wall art. But, the pictures above spoke to me for some reason and for eight dollars total at Goodwill, I figured “why not?”. Since we established that my decor style is apparently funeral home chic, these pictures will fit right in! I love the lace on the rose picture and the more ornate frame on the smaller one. I feel like someone loved these pictures a lot or maybe they belonged to one of their loved ones and I like feeling like I’ve given both of them a beautiful new home to be showcased in. :*)

Are you a floral decor fan or nah? What is your favorite thing to shop for when it comes to home goods? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

How To Prepare For The Sale Of Your Home

How To Prepare For The Sale Of Your Home

Selling your house is an exciting time, but it can also be quite stressful with all of the things you need to plan for and take care of – especially if you’ve never done it before. To make the process easier on you, in this post we’re going to share with you some of our top tips on how to prepare for selling your house:

Pick a good estate agent:

The very first step when it comes to selling your house is to ensure that you have a good estate agent who will be there to make the process as easy as possible and help you with any questions you have or any issues that arise throughout. Although there’s no foolproof system for finding an estate agent who does a good job and who you can trust, a good way to go about it is by asking for recommendations from friends and family who have sold or bought through a specific agent and then contacting them. Another option is by doing a search online in your local area, for example, for an agent with good reviews and see what you can come up with. At the end of the day, you are going to want to Sell your Houston area house fast (or your local area). An excellent estate agent will understand that and do their best to move you along onto your next adventure in a timely manner.

Carry out repairs:

Once you’re starting to prepare the house to get ready to sell and conduct viewings, then it’s going to be a good idea to start carrying out the repairs that have been getting put off and that really need done. This will also give a much better impression with the new potential owners, so it’s a good idea from an investment point of view. Whether it’s repairing floors, fixing a leaky pipe, installing a new Tsurumi submersible pump, or even fixing the roof, get these things done before you even start conducting viewings.

Completing necessary repairs can be a time consuming and expensive process. This can be a major hindrance if you would like the selling process to be as speedy as possible. Should this be the case for you, there are other options. Simply enter a search for “We buy Houses North Carolina” (or your local area). From there, you will be able to begin weighing your options as there is a chance you can sell your home as is. Perhaps you will want to carry out repairs that are less expensive to increase your offer. Or, you will accept the cash for houses amount and be on your way to your new place without the worry of major repair bills.

Have your paperwork ready:

Selling a house is a big task that involves a lot of paperwork, so making sure that you have everything ready on this front is very important and will make your life so much easier – especially if you’re looking for a faster sale or need things done in a certain way. You can speak to your bank and estate agent as well as your lawyer about the kinds of paperwork you need in order to get everything organized, but it’s definitely a good idea to do this as early as possible so that everything can run smoothly and you’re not rushing around trying to gather things that you don’t have.

Make sure everything is well presented:

If you want to sell your house, then you want to entice potential buyers and they’re not going to be interested in buying from you if your house is a mess, the garden looks like a jungle, and it looks like nothing has been taken care of since you moved in. Make sure that the place and the surrounding areas are clean, tidy, and free from clutter and, in some cases, it could even help you raise the value of the place a little before you sell it, which is never a bad thing!

Use the tips above to ensure that your sale goes smoothly and happy moving!

Lil Red’s Art Gallery: Ovals, Anyone? Edition

Hiii everyone! When wall art shopping for my apartment, I didn’t really have a specific theme in mind for the pieces that I wanted. I more or less just picked what I liked and went with it. Despite all of the artwork not necessarily “going together”, I think that once all of them are hung up it’s going to look super nice. Especially because even if the pictures are all different, the color palette is similar enough on all of them that it will still look like they belong together. I have a vision! Lol.

I went hard at the Goodwill, buying at least ten framed pictures in total, including these cool oval shaped ones below:

gwgw1gw2gw3

My sister told me that all of the pictures I picked out are old ladyish and, be that as it may, I like them. In fact, a lot of the artwork that I purchased reminds me of the paintings that my grandma had hung up in the amazing funeral home that she operated. So, I guess you can call my taste in décor “funeral home chic”? Lol, regardless, of if the pieces that I bought are dated, I like that classic, vintage feel and I think that once my art wall is complete, it’s going to compliment the furniture in my living room really well. So put that in your pipe and smoke it, sis! 😀

Where do you get inspiration for home décor? Do you have a more modern or classic taste in decorating? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Lil Red’s Art Gallery: Van Gogh Edition

Hi hi! It seems like I end up at a Goodwill at least once a week when I’m working and, I’m so not mad about it, because I have found so much cool apartment stuff from there. You can’t beat the value of secondhand shopping and the thrill of a real life treasure hunt at your local thrift store.

It’s funny, because I’m a pretty major germophobe and, several years ago, I would have preferred that you cut my hands off than look through a store of other people’s old belongings. But, now, I thrift shop like the best of them (As long as I have Purell on deck, of course!) and it’s a small victory but that’s progress, baby.

During my last trip to the thrift, I found a beautiful framed copy of Van Gogh’s sunflower painting for FIVE BUCKS and I was (AND STILL AM!) excited! Take a look:

van

Ninety percent of the wall art that I got for my apartment is from the thrift and my only qualm is that they write the prices on the glass of the frame and I have no idea how to get it off! So any suggestions for that would be greatly appreciated. But, I guess that’s a small price to pay for paying a small price for some new decor.

I have always loved this painting and was so happy to have found it. It will make a great centerpiece for the art wall I want to make in my living room so I’m looking forward to getting everything hung up ASAP. Now, if only I can find me a copy of Starry Night at Goodwill next!

What is your favorite painting? Who is your favorite artist? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Taking Care Of Yourself When You Have A Chronic Condition

Standard
Taking Care Of Yourself When You Have A Chronic Condition

A chronic condition is one that is likely to stay with you over the long term, sometimes even for life. So, managing it is much different than getting sick with something like the flu and then recovering after a short time and getting back to your normal life. Take a look at how to deal with a chronic health condition along with some specific examples and suggestions in the post below:

General advice:

First of all, it needs to be stated that each chronic condition and the individuals that suffer from them will require different treatments that are customized to their needs. What works for one person may not work for another. That’s why we go to the doctors’ for their advice. However, there are some more general principles that can help if you find yourself in this situation.

The first is learning self-compassion. In fact, it’s vital that you can not only forgive yourself when you can’t do what everyone else around you can because of your chronic illness. Otherwise, your mental health can really suffer, as well.

Secondly, patience is crucial when you have a chronic condition because you are likely to experience times when you are in remission and times when things become worse. Of course, patience can really help you to get through the difficult times without spending all of your energy and motivation on worry and frustration.

Diabetes:

One chronic condition that is very common in the Western world is diabetes, both type 1 and type 2. What few people realize is that some doctors recommend treating type 2 diabetes with diet and lifestyle changes. Type 1, however, is something that you are born with or develop in early life, and that means you need to get used to monitoring your own condition including regularly testing your blood with a meter that you can get from a diabetic medical supplies specialist. If your blood sugars are too high, you will need to take insulin, and if they are too low, then you may need to fuel your body with a sugary drink or snack. It’s crucial that you adhere to the advice that the practitioner in charge of your care has given you.

Managing diabetes does come with ongoing costs, and over time many people accumulate more supplies than they end up using, whether from a change in treatment plan, a switch in brands, or simply buying in bulk. Unused test strips, lancets, insulin, and other materials still hold real value, and selling them is a straightforward way to recoup some of that expense. To connect with local buyers, search for diabetic supplies in new jersey to find services that purchase unused supplies quickly and hassle-free.

Depression:

Another common chronic condition is depression. In fact, it can seem as if this is a plague as so many people suffer from it. Once again, each different type of depression will need a separate type of treatment. However, there are some factors that can commonly help if you do find yourself suffering from this issue.

The first, is to take regular aerobic exercise, something that has been shown to be at least as effective as antidepressants in studies. Additionally, making changes to your diet, as well as seeking out therapy that focuses on how you relate and act on your more negative thoughts (namely CBT) can help too, especially over the long term. Something that can make depression, although a chronic condition, much more easy to manage.

Treatment will be different for everyone but use the advice above to help you take the first steps in monitoring your chronic condition.

Hellooo everyone! One of the last things that I need to do in my apartment is adorn one of my blank walls in my living room with pictures. During a shopping trip to Goodwill last month, I purchased at least ten framed quirky paintings for forty bucks total. All that’s left to do is find a picture hanging kit and have my dad over to help with the process as he promised when I moved in.

I love secondhand shopping and I wanted to show all of you my finds because it’s like a treasure hunt every time you step foot into a Goodwill or thrift shop. But, first, I wanted to share with you two wall arts that are not from a thrift store but are still really pretty and sentimental all the same. Check it out:

art

I love both of these pictures so much because they remind me of my clients. The small “home” block was a gift from one of my families after I told them the good news about my apartment. I was so touched by the sweet gesture when I opened the gift bag during my shift the following week. It is simple and pretty and the rustic wooden feel will be just right in my living room with its hardwood flooring and the dark wood paneling on my loft space up above.

The vibrant “welcome” sign was a Party City purchase when I was with another one of my girlies. She loves going to that store and when we saw that picture, we both thought that it would be perfect in my new place. I normally don’t care for pictures with wording on them but I liked how simple both of these were and how they made a statement without saying much of anything. Now, let’s see if I can get them hung up some time this year!

Welcome To My Crib: My Room Edition

Hi, MTV, and welcome to my crib! It has taken me a while to get a post up about the room where all of the magic doesn’t happen AKA my bedroom. Mainly, this is because my room is dark AF and it took me two weeks of being moved in to decide to assemble the lamp that I got to brighten things up. Lol, WHOOPS. Anyways, you guys have seen the amazing walk in closet that my room offers but you haven’t seen the rest – so take a look:

roomroom2room1room3room4

Even with all of the lights on in my room and a huge skylight looking over it, it is still pretty dark so I am open to suggestions on how to fix that problem! But, other than that, I am in love with my loft space and the big open bedroom that it created. Obviously, the walk in closet is my favorite part but it’s so nice to have a large room to sprawl out in.

And, this includes my bed! Because I ball on a budget, I refused to buy a bigger bed. Rather, I just put the two twin ones from my family home together to make an ultimate mega bed. Surprisingly comfy and insanely roomy, there is nothing better than tucking myself into it every night!

Again, because I ball on a budget, almost all of the furniture in my room is from the family home. However, I purchased the gorgeous vanity, stool, and full length mirror from Abbey Ann’s along with my living room furniture. (PS: If you have a vanity but don’t have a matching stool, you could consider purchasing some classroom stools and customizing them as a cool DIY!) I have yet to do my makeup in front of the vanity like I intended because bad lighting but I still love it so much. And, I have always wanted a full length mirror like the one I purchased so they were both an amazing secondhand find. :’)

I am really proud of how my apartment is coming together and I am so happy that I got to share my Moving On Up journey with all of you. Thanks for reading!

How do you create good lighting in a dark space? How is your bedroom decorated? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Simple Tricks For Unblocking Your Drain

Simple Tricks For Unblocking Your Drain

Now that spring is here, it is the ideal time for us to look at cleaning the entire house to make a brand new start for the summer season. Spring cleaning is something we do once a year where the whole home is cleared out, tidied, and thoroughly cleaned, and it really makes life easier in the long run.

Today, we are going to have a chat about one specific part of your spring cleaning which can be a little tough: the drain. Our kitchen drain will often get clogged up with suds, food waste, and other deposits and it is up to us to clear this out so that the drain runs properly and doesn’t become blocked. You could use a Thrift drain cleaner, pipe cleaner and other methods to do this, and we are running through our top few methods today.

Before we begin, it is worth reminding all of you to DIY at your own risk. Sometimes, quick-fix methods do more harm than good. If you feel like the blockage in your drain is beyond your capabilities, call an expert in your area by searching online for “Blocked Drains Plumber Sydney” or wherever you reside to ensure a safe and effective solution. Now, let’s get to it:

Wire Hanger:

If you know that your drain is clogged up to the max and you need to fix the blockage right away, a bent wire hanger can be ideal. It is a simple but effective choice and it will allow you to fish and dig for different sediment and dirt which might be left in the drain. Once you’ve pulled out as much as you can, make sure to rinse with hot water.

Baking Soda and Vinegar:

One of the easiest ways to clean a drain is by using a simple chemical reaction found in the kitchen. By mixing ½ cup baking soda and ½ cup vinegar and pouring it down the sink, you will be able to watch a fizzing reaction which would put any science fair volcano to shame. This is a super easy way to clean your drain and all you need to do is leave it for 10 minutes and then rinse with hot water after.

The Wet & Dry Vacuum:

If you weren’t already aware of this, there is such a thing as a wet and dry vacuum which is used for situations just like this. If you have one, you can set your vacuum to wet and cover up your vent to the sink to allow dirt to be sucked up without any mess.

Boiling Water:

If you don’t like the idea of throwing a ton of different chemicals down the drain every time you want to wash it, then boiling water will be for you. Everything has a melting point and when we pour hot water into the drain, it will start to melt the grime and dirt and wash it away. Let the water work its magic for a few seconds between each pour and soon your drain will be as good as new.

Of course, none of these methods are foolproof and might only be slightly improving the clog. If you have utilized the skills to solve it yourself and it’s not getting any better, then it’s time to call in the pros. The team at lclplumbing.com.au (or a similar company in your local area) specialize in blocked drains and will get things back in working order the first time. This can save a lot of hassle and headache!

Caustic Soda:

For tough grease and grime which you cannot remove by regular means, this is one of the easiest ways to make sure that your drain is clean and tidy. To start, you will want to wear gloves as this is strong stuff and then mix 3 cups of caustic soda with ¾ gallon water. Stir well and pour into the drain before leaving for 30 minutes. Rinse with water.

Nothing is worse than a blocked drain, so clear it up with the simple methods above!
