Akron Comicon

Howdy!!! This past Saturday was super fun because my brother, Johnny, and I went to the Akron Comicon. I have been looking forward to this event since last year as I wasn’t able to attend, but Johnny and Andrew had a blast and I couldn’t wait to join in the fun too. We all walked away with SO many goodies and although my wallet was protesting, my heart was very full lol. You can see my purchases later this week so keep it posted for that! Now, let’s take a look at some pics and have a chat:

image_50440193(6)image_50433025(3)image_50402561(3)image_50748161(3)image_50432001(7)

The Akron Comicon was full of vendors, fans of fandoms, and minor celebrities both local and from afar. Other than being in TJMaxx, I had never seen so many things that I wanted to buy from my favorite shows, movies, and animes. Also, huge shout out to my big bro for letting me borrow his Black Clover T-shirt because I had no anime gear to wear. Although I like to think my boots with the flames on them more than made up for the fact! During our afternoon, we schmoozed, we shopped, and we enjoyed being in the presence of so many people who shared our interests.

As far as celebrities went at the Con, it was a bit of a mixed bag. There were a few ladies who were in literally one scene from Scream, the guy who played Timmy from Lassie? haha and the voice actors from a few seasons of Charlie Brown who played Lucy and Charlie B. The most exciting people we met was our hometown hero from Akron, the Son of Ghoul who hosted a public access horror show. It was also very exciting to get a peck on the cheek from him! We also got to meet Drac and Countess Carita who host Transylvania Tonight, another horror show. Johnny and I have Drac’s artwork hanging up in our living room so it was SO nice to hang out with them for a bit and buy a new addition to our movie monster portraits. They were all nice as can be and I am thrilled to have spent some time with them!

The Akron Comicon was such a hoot and it was wonderful to finally be able to experience it with Johnny and Andrew. I can’t wait for next year’s Comicon and maybe get another smooch from the Son of Ghoul! ❤

Have you ever met anyone famous before? Have you ever attended a Comicon? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

New Navy & Grey Nails

Hello!!! I don’t know about all of you, but I had an excellent weekend! I got my nails done on Friday and my bestie girl came over and on Saturday I attended the Akron Comicon. You will see much more about that this week – it was a hoot. 😀 I couldn’t wait for my appointment at Elysian Nails after my work day on Friday because my nails were looking pretty rough. They were lifting and outgrown and I always know that it’s time for a fill when my acrylics poke through the gloves I wear to clean the bunnies’ litter box. So gross lol.

Thankfully, my tech got me right and the timing couldn’t be better – I’m attending an event this Friday that I am beyond excited about. It’s a surprise, but you will all be informed soon!! Check out my New Navy & Grey Nails:

image_50442241(8)image_50411265(6)

During the fall and winter, I always gravitate towards bold, rich nail polish paired with a lighter hue. It creates a gorgeous contrast and I think it looks so chic and sophisticated. After oxblood and beige nails during my last fill, I wanted to get away from warmer hues and delve into something more icy and cool. I have been obsessed with all things navy since adding the shade into my hair a few months ago and needed more of it! I selected a deep navy and softer heather grey for my colors and love how it turned out. They make me feel like a total ice queen!

Normally when I get my nails done, I opt for a first thing in the morning appointment. That didn’t work out this time around, but it was pretty nice to wrap up my week at the nail salon. Closing the work day out by getting pampered was most relaxing and, as always, my nail tech crushed. She got my janky nails looking brand new again. They feel so secure and sturdy as if some of the nails hadn’t been lifted at all. The shape is exactly how I like them, the colors are divine, and I can’t wait to show them off this Friday at a shindig with a local celebrity. 😀

There is nothing like a fresh fill to get your girl back to feeling her damn self and I can’t stop looking at my new nails. And, yes, I already booked my December appointment in October lol. Make sure you get your beauty appointments scheduled while you still can for the holiday season!

What color of nail polish are you rocking? When during the day to you like to schedule your beauty appointments? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Hello!!! Johnny and I had so much fun on Halloween and this has been my favorite spooky season celebration we have had yet. I loved my costume, we watched all of the scary movies, and enjoyed a bonfire while we passed out Trick or Treat candy with my family. Normally, it’s like pulling teeth to get Johnny to take a “nice” picture with me. (He has a knack for subtly flipping the bird in most of our pictures lol SMH!) On Trick or Treat night, however, he was ready for his close up and willingly took these shots with me. I think he rocked it!

image_50424065(4)image_50434305(5)image_50431233(5)image_50729985(4)image_50726657(2)image_50438913(5)image_50440705(4)

It is a joy to celebrate any holiday with Johnny, but Halloween just hits different. It’s not a season – it’s a state of mind and while we keep it spooky year round, Halloween weekend is like our Christmas Day. Johnny and I were so excited to get dressed up and jam packed our schedule full of activities. The best part was definitely helping out with Trick or Treat and we were thrilled that my family got involved in it too. We just love to spread that Halloween spirit and our bonfire was awesome. We had a powder to make the flames change colors and it looked amazing! 😀

Trick or Treat night was also great because Johnny finally took pictures with me. In fact, when I asked him if he would take “nice” pictures with me, he replied with “Of course I will. It’s Halloween!” Lol, he is so ridiculous but he was serving LOOKS in these shots. He was working his hodge podge vampire costume like nobody’s business and I was so proud. I have pictures of us together from every Halloween we have celebrated as a couple and I really treasure them. I think the pics we took this year was our best work yet. ❤

I didn’t have one piece of candy all of Halloween weekend because we ran out. But, I have countless happy memories from it and that’s good enough for me! ❤

What is your favorite Halloween candy? Least favorite? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Lil Red’s Book Club: After The Fall By Judith Kelman Edition

Lil Red’s Book Club: After The Fall By Judith Kelman Edition

Hello everyone and welcome to a brand new edition of Lil Red’s Book Club! It has been a while since the last book club review because it took me a fat minute to finish After The Fall by Judith Kelman. It was a good book, but it was very wordy! After The Fall was a court case thriller and that is a genre that I always enjoy. The subject matter of the trial and this book in general are a HUGE trigger warning as it deals with rape, sexual assault, and a plethora of disturbing content. If this does not seem like a book for you, then please skip over this post! Now, let’s get to it in a spoiler free setting:

image_50429185(6)

Danny Magill is a beloved teen in his community. He is a star athlete, star student, star friend, and star son to Jess and Charlie. Danny is helpful, courteous, and talented with an entire future ahead of him – he is in the process of filling out college applications. As with any thriller, the perfect bubble of the Magill home and Danny’s life is about to pop in a major way. After a school function, Danny gives a ride home to his friend Lisa. Hours after he drops her off, he is arrested for rape and physical assault.

The police department in Danny’s neck of the woods is in desperate need of a win and this is a case that they know they can make stick. As Danny lawyers up with a hot shot pro, Detective Tucci starts to work the case. Danny and his family continue to claim their innocence and Tucci must find the hard evidence to corroborate Lisa’s statement. This is a serious matter for Tucci – his job is on the line and he has a gravely ill daughter who depends on his health insurance. To add to Tucci’s stress, he is coming up with a big fat goose egg every time he follows a lead.

As Tucci hustles to put Danny behind bars, Danny’s defense team is kicking it into overdrive to get him acquitted. For a while, things are looking pretty good for Team Magill. Danny has no cuts or wounds on his hands to show he beat someone, the statement of Lisa’s father doesn’t add up, and the defense team is confident they can prove reasonable doubt. That is… until another girl comes forward accusing Danny of rape too.

In Danny’s community, he has already been tried and charged by the public as a rapist. His mental health begins to plummet rapidly and his parents who were once so positive these charges were false start to think differently. The trial is approaching quickly and the future of Danny and Lisa are in their lawyers’ hands. Is Danny guilty of these crimes? Or are these claims truly false? Read After The Fall to find out!

I can’t say that After The Fall was my favorite book ever, but I liked it well enough. I haven’t read a court case thriller in a long while so it was a nice change of pace and the story line definitely held my attention. After The Fall alternated between Jess (Danny’s mom) and Detective Tucci as a narrator and it was very interesting to see the case from both sides. Every chapter felt like one step forward and two steps back between the defense and prosecution. While I did figure out the grand reveal, I honestly had no clue what was going to happen as I was reading. It felt like the trial could have gone either way until things started wrapping up and it kept me turning the page.

Despite the graphic subject matter of this book, Judith Kelman managed to create characters that were really likeable. I felt so sorry for Jess because you could tell she only wanted the best for her children. She was trying to be strong for her family as she was falling apart and I think everyone can relate to that. Max, Danny’s younger brother, was adorable and hilarious. We also can’t forget about the faithful family pup, Prozac! Detective Tucci was also a character I really enjoyed. He comes off as intimidating, but he is such a teddy bear at heart and it showed as he cared for his ailing daughter. His wisecracks were top notch and I loved his friendship with one of the forensic scientists. It was precious. 🙂

I am going to rate After The Fall with a six and a half out of ten stars. This was a good book, but not great. If you are a fan of the genre, then I would recommend it. If not, then this is one you can skip on!

What are you currently reading? What should I read next? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Sleeping Good, Feeling Great

Hello!! I have had a few appointments with my new therapist and it has been most helpful! She is seriously the best and is so much fun to talk to – it’s almost like I’m venting to a friend and I really like that. I have noticed a significant difference in my mood already just by being able to vocalize some of the things that have been weighing on my mind. Another big change that I made other than therapy is finding someone new to handle my medication management and that has been a HUGE success!

It’s incredibly important to get professional help for your well-being when you’re struggling mentally. There are some great services out there, like this website, that you can look into when it comes to improving your mental health and well-being in general.

Prior to the new person I have been going to for med management, I was just seeing a general practitioner. He was fine, but our appointments literally only lasted like two minutes and it was expensive as all get out. So, I decided to make an appointment with a nurse practitioner who works in the same office as my therapist. My only regret? That I didn’t do it sooner because she is awesome and prescribed me a new medication that has seriously changed my life.

This past summer, I was diagnosed with PTSD. I have always suffered from night terrors, but it was getting to be SO extreme. There was a point when I was only having a handful of night terrors per week and it turned into an every single night affair. For months, I was waking up every night screaming and it was horrible for both me and Johnny. It was so hard to fall back asleep after I jarred us awake from screaming bloody murder and we were going through life exhausted.

I had no idea that there was a medication that could help with my night terrors, so I never brought it up. You could have knocked me over with a feather when my nurse practitioner told me that there was something that she could prescribe! Since taking this new medication, I have not had one single night terror. None. Nada. Zip. Zero. I don’t think I realized how sleep deprived I was until I was actually getting a good night’s sleep for the first time in months.

Now that I am sleeping better, I feel energized, my mood has improved, and my work days don’t feel anywhere near as daunting. Normally, I would be too fatigued by the time the weekend rolled around to do anything. Now, Johnny and I have had outings with friends, family, and ourselves every weekend. It’s fun! I feel more like myself than I have in months and I am so thankful that I am finally sleeping through the night. The power of being well rested is a real thing!

If you feel like you are struggling, I can’t encourage you enough to seek help. It might feel scary, but you are going to feel so much better and I am proof of that. I know you can do it! ❤

What is something that helps you sleep well? Do you dream a lot when you sleep? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Happy Gotcha Day, Bunnies!

Hello everyone!!! November first was Melvin and Penelope’s Gotcha Day and I guess I’m a horrible bunny mom because I didn’t realize it until the second lol. I have been thinking about their Gotcha Day for months and naturally it slipped my mind the day of SMH. In my defense, it has felt like Johnny and I have had Mel and P for forever ever since we brought them home over a year ago. They are the best little bunnies that we could ever ask for and it is such a joy to be bunny parents:

image_50459137(10)image_50388481(6)image_50424321(11)image_50420993(6)image_50419457(8)

^^^ Lol at this picture of Penelope!

Mel and P have grown so much since we have brought them home. Not in size, but in spirit haha. For the first several months of having them, they were pretty skittish and it took a decent amount of time for them to get fully acclimated to their new setting and owners. These first months were a testament to patience being a virtue as we slowly but surely increased our interactions with them. A year ago, they barely wanted to be pet. Now, they love to be picked up and cuddled while Johnny and I hang out in the evenings. It’s great!

The best part about this year of pet parenthood has been watching Mel and Pen’s personalities finally come out. Penelope is not as shy as we originally thought and is such a cuddle bug. Our clothes are proof of this because she sheds like crazy. The way to her heart has always been with her favorite treats and she will literally melt over an apple lol. Melvin, on the other hand, is all about adventure. He loves to explore and is currently zooming around our bunny proofed zone as I type this. Mel is such an adolescent and doesn’t like to be held for too long so he can get back to playing. Thankfully, he is never too old for lots of pets from his old mom and pop. 🙂

Johnny and I took our fur babies home during a very dark place in my life and they made every day better. It was a comfort to have these two little gremlins to wake up to and return home to, knowing that they depended on me for their care. No matter how bad I was feeling, just being around them always helped to lift my spirits. Even though they can’t clean their own litter box (I wish!), they take care of me too. My mental health has improved one hundred fold because of them and they truly came into our lives at just the right time. I love them so much! ❤

Happy (late) Gotcha Day to my sweet Melvin and Penelope. The most wonderful bunnies in all the land! Johnny and I love you both!!!

Do you celebrate your pet’s Gotcha Day? How has your pet helped you? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Hello everyone and welcome to the blooper reel from my Racy Ringleader OOTD! Last year, Johnny and I began a Halloween tradition of passing out Trick or Treat candy in my parents’ neighborhood. This is what we did on Saturday evening along with a bonfire and it was such fun. We saw a lot of great costumes throughout the evening, but I still say mine was the best lol. Sorry about it, kids!! These shots, however, were anything but the best so naturally let’s take a look:

Waving up the first round of Trick or Treaters!

image_50749953(1)

In case you haven’t noticed, Johnny and I love Halloween and we were simply thriving over the weekend. We enjoyed ourselves so much for our dinner and movie date with our bestie on Friday, but Trick or Treat night just hits differently. The entire evening was spent sitting around a raging fire with my parents and brother, laughing and listing off all of our favorite costumes that we had seen. It was so nice to see them get into the Halloween spirit with us and share in our joy of the happiest holiday of all.

We had an insane amount of Trick or Treaters visit us and we actually ran out of candy before the event was over. In that time, we saw so many funny and adorable costumes. I think we all agreed on a kiddo specifically dressed as “Rocky III” and carrying a speaker that played “The Eye of The Tiger” as being the winner. Honorable mention goes to a kid dressed up as a “guy in a suit”, a lil baby as a Starbucks Frappachino, and an undead mermaid. All of the kids rocked it, though, and it warmed my cold, bitter heart to see everyone in the neighborhood having a blast!

This has been one of mine and Johnny’s best Halloweens yet and I wish it never ended. I’d be a liar if I said I wasn’t stoked about Thanksgiving food, though! 😀

What was your favorite Halloween costume you saw? What is your favorite candy? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Hello everyone and welcome to a brand new OOTD showing off my Racy Ringleader Halloween costume! I don’t know about all of you, but Johnny and I had a fabulous Halloween weekend. On Friday, our bestie came over for dinner and scary movies. Saturday we had a bonfire and passed out candy at my parents’ house. And on Sunday, we spent all day watching more horror flicks. It was great! I have been itching to wear my new costume since it came in the mail and I don’t think it could have turned out any better. Check it out:

image_50733313(1)image_50731009(5)image_50459137(9)image_50729217image_50750465(2)image_50430465(7)image_50449409(10)image_50740993(6)

Who? What? Wear?

Racy Ringleader Costume: Spirit Halloween

Platform Boots: Forever 21

Bejeweled Fishnets: Urban Outfitters

The earrings are from Claire’s, the headband is from Amazon, the fake lashes are from Spirit Halloween, and the cane sword was a gift from Johnny!

My Racy Ringleader costume is literally only the third Halloween costume that I have bought as an adult and I am thrilled about it. Partially because it looks awesome, but also because it came together so well. The base of the costume is all from Spirit Halloween and the accessories came from my own closet. This was aces in my book because the costume was pretty expensive and I didn’t want to buy anything more if I didn’t have to. As soon as I saw my costume online, I knew exactly how I wanted to wear it and it turned out exactly the way I pictured it. I love when that happens. 🙂

Since the base of the outfit required no guesswork, let’s move onto accessories. The first order of business was the top hat because the one that came with my costume sucked on ice. Luckily, Johnny ordered me a new one, but it wasn’t quite what we expected. Instead of a headband, it was held up by an elastic string under the neck and it was so lame lol. My Johnny is a handy guy, though, and he Gorilla Taped it to a headband base of mine. It worked like a charm, despite it being titled as a “mini Leprechaun hat”. Haha, not quite Racy Ringleader – but I’ll take it!

Next on the agenda was shoes and tights. This was a no brainer and I selected my favorite pair of bejeweled fishnets from Urban Outfitters. These tights are the absolute best and it added the sex appeal and touch of bling that this costume needed. And, of course, the Forever 21 platform boots were SO ideal as the colors in its details matched the costume perfectly. It was like they were made to wear with it and I couldn’t imagine anything different. These ones took the cake, for sure.

The final order of business was earrings and my beloved cane sword. For earrings, I went with a large pair of burnished gold crosses. These added a playful touch of movement and complimented all that gold in the costume beautifully. And, finally, the cane sword completed the costume. This was a birthday gift from Johnny and it was the best to be able to break it out for Halloween. While I could have ordered a whip from Spirit Halloween, this was a way more fun option. It still gets me every time that it’s actually a sword and I will never be over that snake head handle!!!

My Racy Ringleader OOTD had me feeling like I won Halloween and I felt amazing in it. It was sexy, sassy, and well worth the price tag. Maybe I’ll buy another new costume next year, but I won’t be mad if I end up wearing this one again!

What did you do for Halloween? What did you dress up as? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

How To Learn A Brand New Skill In Middle-Age

Standard
How To Learn A Brand New Skill In Middle-Age

Middle age is nowhere near the “can’t teach an old dog new tricks” stage yet, and that adage is hardly even true in the first place. Sure, nootropics like Fasoracetam can give you a leg up, but nothing beats diligent hard work and motivation. So, let’s say you want to dive straight into embracing your novicehood in a brand new skill. How might you go about it? That’s not an easy question to answer, but in this post, we’ll help you get there. Let’s begin:

Don’t Over Complicate It:

Your age doesn’t mean you have to swim before you can walk, so never over complicating your pursuit is healthy. Say you want to learn how to draw – using anatomy figures and learning very basic perspective tips with YouTube tutorials or even sketchbooks can be tremendously helpful. Perhaps instead of learning a new hobby, you would like to try a different career. You can do this no matter what your age is and all you need to do is start. You can look into local colleges, certification programs, or community services courses online so you can learn in your own time and give back to those who need it. Remember that you have nothing to prove to anyone but yourself.

Fall In Love With The Craft:

As we get older, we tend to learn skills for practicality. This is because we all have to earn a living, or refine ourselves in certain roles, be that parent, homeowner, business person, etc. But obligation can often make you feel disconnected or even tired of the skill or habit before you even begin. That’s why it’s good to fall in love with the craft, even if it’s learning basic DIY so you can improve certain aspects of the home more cheaply and integrate your own aesthetic changes.

Join A Social Group:

This is an optional step, but you’ll find it’s much healthier to learn alongside and make mistakes with novices just like you, who may be in the same boat. For example, you can definitely learn yoga poses and take classes online, but there’s something connective about being in a studio with people from all walks of life and trying not to fall down among them during increasingly difficult poses that yes, you one day will pull off. Not only does this turn the skill into an event, but let’s face it, it can be harder to make friends as you get older. As such, this provides a golden opportunity to get started and socialize while doing it.

With this advice, you’re sure to not only learn, but excel in a brand new skill, no matter your age!

Roasted Corn Queso Fundido

Roasted Corn Queso Fundido

Hello!!! Johnny and I had a fabulous Halloween weekend and I hope that all of you did too! On Friday, we hosted our bestie, Cliff, for dinner and scary movies and we helped pass out candy in my parents’ neighborhood on Saturday. We had a blast and I wish the weekend could have lasted forever! For Friday night’s dinner, I made all of the fixings for tacos including cilantro lime rice and my homemade guacamole. I also wanted to try something new by making a Roasted Corn Queso Fundido dip from closetcooking. The recipe sounded awesome but it was not that great in execution. Check it out:

image_50736385(3)image_50748161(2)

This Fundido dip required minimal ingredients and simple steps. Literally all I had to do was chop some peppers and onion and let it start to char in the pan. Once the veggies were ready, it was time to add mayo, lime juice, and the cheese and mix it all up. In theory, I thought that this recipe would be really yummy and it was good. However, it wasn’t great and I definitely wouldn’t make it again.

My biggest qualm with this dip was its consistency. It wasn’t ooey gooey like I was hoping for and was essentially just veggies wadded up in melted cheese. With little to no liquid in this recipe, it makes sense and I should have thought to add some cream to it while the cheese was melting. Hindsight is, as always, twenty/twenty and I don’t really like to make tweaks on the spot with a brand new recipe. Even if this dip did have a thinner consistency, it still wouldn’t have blown me away. The flavor of it was okay, but it didn’t pack a punch and would need some doctoring up for sure.

New recipes can’t all be winners and this one from closetcooking was not the best and I don’t recommend it. I would like to try and make a Queso Blanco dip next and will hopefully have more success with that!
