Creamy Lemon Ricotta Pasta

Standard
Creamy Lemon Ricotta Pasta

Hello!!! I always enjoy trying out new recipes and had a few random odds and ends of ingredients that I didn’t end up using for other meals. This included some lemons and a container of ricotta cheese. I originally planned on using the ricotta for baked ziti, but decided that I wanted to try something different. I knew that I could turn lemons into lemonade with these randos in my fridge and found a recipe by Savoring Italy for Creamy Lemon Ricotta Pasta on Pinterest. Both Johnny and I really enjoyed it and it is definitely one that I will make again! Check it out:

I am a huge fan of lemon pasta dishes. Well, let’s be real – any pasta dish lol. What I like about lemon pasta specifically is how light it is. The zingy flavor reminds me of summertime and after lots of snow in Ohio, it is just what I needed! I thought the last lemon pasta recipe I made was good, but the one by Savoring Italy was infinitely better. The ricotta cheese made it so rich and savory and every bite was a little slice of heaven. My only qualm with the recipe was that it tasted much better the second day. While it was very good freshly made, I always prefer something that I am making to taste its best immediately.

The recipe for this pasta was insanely easy and other than cooking the angel hair pasta that I opted for, the prep time took less than five minutes. All I needed to do was zest and juice the lemons, brown some butter in a pan, and mix it all together with the noodles and cheese. This is probably the fastest recipe I have ever made, which was excellent on a work night. It also used under ten ingredients and I didn’t have to buy anything different to make this recipe in its entirety. There is nothing better than that!

I am eager to make the Creamy Lemon Ricotta Pasta by Savoring Italy again. Now that I have made it once by staying true to the recipe, I plan on doctoring it up with some garlic, spinach, and pine nuts to give it a bit more variety. This meal was a huge success because Johnny was SO sure he wasn’t going to like it and ended up having seconds!

Have you tried any new recipes recently? How did it turn out? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Lil Red’s Book Club: Foe By Iain Reid Edition

Lil Red’s Book Club: Foe By Iain Reid Edition

Hello everyone and welcome to a brand new edition of Lil Red’s Book Club! Without giving any spoilers away, as always, we will be discussing a creepy Sci-Fi book called Foe by Iain Reid. It took me a minute to get into Foe, but once I was in, I was one hundred million percent in. This is one of the most unique books that I have ever read and it was thrilling because I have literally never read anything like it before. There wasn’t anything particularly triggering about Foe, so let’s dive right into the synopsis:

image_50408449(3)

Junior and Hen live on a farm in the not so distant future. Their property is one of the few that hasn’t been taken over by the government and they are completely isolated in a rural setting. Every day for Junior and Hen is just like the day before. They do chores around the home, go to work, eat dinner, and do it all again tomorrow. Then, one day, things change thanks to a visit from an uninvited guest. His name is Terrance and he is a representative of OuterMore.

OuterMore is a high tech branch of the government that focuses on outer space – specifically living there and they are getting close to their goal. So close, in fact, that they are now using a lottery to select people to participate in the Installation. Junior’s name has been chosen, Hen’s hasn’t. During his visit, Terrance assures Junior that nothing is happening just yet and leaves. Over two years goes by until Terrance shows up at their door and let’s the couple know that the Installation is a go. The last thing Junior wants is to participate in this project, but he is left without a choice.

There is much to do to prepare for the Installation and Terrance turns their attic into a space to conduct interviews and takes up the guest room as his own. He wants to observe Junior and Hen’s lives fully because OuterMore has a trick up their sleeves. To help Hen cope with her husband being away for years, they are giving her a replacement. Think of it like a living hologram. He will look and behave exactly like Junior and both Hen and her husband will not be able to tell the difference between the real person and the replacement.

Once again, Junior and Hen are left with no choice but to go along with it. For an entire week, Terrance interviews the couple together and separately. He goes to Junior’s job at a grain mill and does the work for him. In this observation period, Terrance learns the ins and outs of Junior and Hen’s lives to create the perfect replacement while Junior is in space. As the week progresses, Junior grows more and more suspicious of Terrance and is convinced he is lying about the entire thing. But is he really? Read Foe to find out!

Reading Foe was my very first time exploring the world of Sci-Fi. I can’t say that I am interested in this genre, however, the combination of otherworldly technology with the creep factor of a horror book was stunning to read. Iain Reid crafted a delicate dance between the two genres and when they fully collided with the grand reveal, I was simply shook. As you all know, I pride myself on being able to sleuth out a grand reveal before it happens. This time around, though, I was dead wrong and I’m glad for it. The reveal was so shocking, yet so simple and it was absolutely divine.

There are only three characters in Foe (minus a few randoms) and, honestly, none of them are particularly likeable. Junior is fully content in his life, is fine with being an average person, and is slightly needy towards his wife. Hen, on the other hand, is cold and distant. She childishly expects Junior to know what is wrong at all times, but won’t tell him anything and they will go for weeks without talking. All the while, Terrance’s eerie presence lingers around them whether he is in the home or not. His arrival pries apart Junior and Hen’s already broken relationship and the tension created could be cut with a knife.

Despite the characters not being my favorite, I don’t even care. Iain Reid wrote Foe so beautifully that I found myself rooting for Junior and Hen anyways. Throughout the book, I was constantly hoping that their relationship would improve. With every turn of the page, I was willing Terrance to show up again and tell them that Junior’s lottery selection was a mistake. Reid was able to get your hopes up like this, knock it down, and keep you coming back for more. My only regret is that this book wasn’t longer because I couldn’t get enough.

I am going to award Foe with the coveted twenty out of ten star rating. You will never read something that is like this book and, if you do, it won’t be nearly as well done as what Iain Red created. Foe was a masterpiece and is an absolute must read!

What are you currently reading? What should I read next? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Merry Christmas!!!!!

Merry Christmas!!!!!

Hello everyone and Merry Christmas to all of you!!! What a year it has been and I am SO ready for quality time with my family and time off. Other than Thanksgiving day, I have not taken time off since having Covid in September. Minus a few random shifts, I will be taking a whole week off and I could not be more excited if I tried. I can’t wait to watch all of the reality TV, hang with my bunnies, read, and relax. It is going to be just what I need and I hope that you will be able to find the time to recharge and enjoy the holidays too!

I know I say this literally every time a holiday rolls around, but it needs repeated: I am so beyond thankful to all of you wonderful people throughout the blogosphere. Wherever you are, you are special to me and words cannot express how happy I am that out of all the blogs online, you stumbled onto mine. Every day, I am motivated to create content for all of my dear friends and readers and I feel immensely proud of everything we have accomplished together. At the end of the day, I couldn’t do it without each and every one of you. ❤

Merry Christmas and thank you for being you! Much love. -Sarah

Bath & Body Works Holiday Scents Pt. 2

Standard
Bath & Body Works Holiday Scents Pt. 2

Howdy!! I used an afternoon off on Tuesday to pop into Bath & Body Works because I was running dangerously low on my beloved foaming hand soaps. The soap from B&BW has been a staple at chez moi ever since I got my own apartment and I simply refuse to buy anything else. They are the absolute best! While I enjoy many of the fragrances that are always available at Bath & Body Works, it’s fun to do a restock when their holiday scents drop. Yesterday, we discussed three of these fragrances and we will chat about the remainder today! Let’s get to it:

image_50412289(8)image_50413057(10)

Twisted Peppermint: From fragrances to flavors, I love all things peppermint! The Twisted Peppermint from B&BW is exactly what you would expect it to smell like and offers notes of “cool peppermint, sugared snow, and fresh balsam”. Now, I don’t know what sugared smell or balsam is supposed to smell like. I don’t even know what balsam is lol. But, you can definitely smell the peppermint and that is all that matters to me! Some peppermint products can be almost harsh smelling and super mentholy but not this one. The Twisted Peppermint is minty, yes, but it doesn’t sting your nostrils when you take a whiff. It is just right!

Frosted Cranberry: A few years back, I gifted Frosted Cranberry candles for Christmas and I remember really liking the scent. Fast forward to present day and it wasn’t as good as I recall it being, but it’s still nice enough! The fragrance notes for Frosted Cranberry are… “frosted cranberry (lol), red delicious apple, and blonde wood”. What I like about the Frosted Cranberry is that it is much richer in its berriness than the Golden Berry Mistletoe which we reviewed yesterday. Not the best, but certainly not the worst either.

Snowy Peachberry: I think I saved the best for last because the Snowy Peachberry is the bomb.com! This scent serves with hints of “snow-kissed cranberries, frosted peach blossom, and shimmering woods”. I can’t speak for the shimmering woods portion, but this is a perfect wintery peach fragrance. It smells fresh and sweet, but also has some tartness to it compliments of the cranberries (the scent not the band). Snowy Peachberry is a fragrance that I would buy any time of the year and I wish that it would linger beyond the holidays. See what I did there? 😉

My favorite to least favorite scents:

Snowy Peachberry

Pink Sparkling Spritz

Twisted Peppermint/Vanilla Bean Noel (I can’t decide between the two!)

Frosted Cranberry

Golden Berry Mistletoe

Normally after a haul from Bath & Body Works, I consider myself to be well set. However, I think I will definitely be shopping the post holiday sales because some of these fragrances are just too good to only have around this time of year. Give me ALL of the Snowy Peachberry, please! 😀

Will you be doing any sale shopping after the holidays? What is a B&BW fragrance that you wish they had year round? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Bath & Body Works Holiday Scents

Hellooooo darlings! It has been a FAT minute since I received any coupons from Bath & Body Works in the mail. Honestly, I get it though because I literally never buy anything lol. I cash in my freebie coupons, I do my foaming hand soap hauls, and that is about it. Hopefully this most recent purchase of holiday scented soap will put me back in B&BW’s good graces because your girl is running desperately low on shower gel and lotion!! Fingers crossed! As I eagerly await some mail from B&BW, let’s chit chat more about their holiday scents. We’ll start with three today and do the remainder tomorrow:

image_50413057(10)image_50412289(8)

^^^ Very aware that Peach Bellini isn’t a holiday scent, but it’s my fave so I always have to buy it! 😀

Pink Sparkling Spritz: This might just be one of the best ones from the Bath & Body Works holiday/winter line. It is bright, poppy, and oh so delightful with notes of “bubbly ginger ale, pink sugar, and raspberry fizz”. It kind of reminds me of another B&BW scent called Champagne Toast (or as Johnny would say, Champagne AND Toast). Imagine that Champagne Toast is a dry champagne. Pink Sparkling Spritz, on the other hand, is sweet as can be and always goes down smooth! 10/10 would recommend!

Vanilla Bean Noel: I have always been fond of Vanilla Bean Noel and am thrilled that B&BW brings it back time and time again. I am a huge vanilla fan and this scent is simply scrumptious with hints of “fresh vanilla bean, warm caramel, and sugar cookies”. Freaking YUM! Also, major shout out to one of the employees who looked all around the store to find my Vanilla Bean Noel for me. I would have been SO disappointed if they were completely out of stock because it has become one of my holiday scent staples.

Golden Berry Mistletoe: I feel very in the middle about Golden Berry Mistletoe. It’s nice, yes, but it isn’t my favorite. Why did I buy it, then? Because I was freaking sick of smelling everything lol! I was starting to go nose blind so I just went for it. This scent features notes of “sparkling berries, sugared spruce, and frosted air”. Whatever frosted air means. If you are looking for a softer holiday fragrance, Golden Berry Mistletoe is a safe bet. If you want something that packs more of a punch, however, you should skip on this one.

So far so good with this holiday hand soap haul! Stay tuned tomorrow because we will be talking Twisted Peppermint, Frosted Cranberry, and Snowy Peachberry. I bet you can already guess which one is my favorite! 😉

What is your favorite Bath & Body Works holiday scent? What is your least favorite holiday scent (I HATE cinnamon and pine!)? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Merry & Bright OOTD Bloopers

Hello everyone and welcome to the blooper reel from my Merry & Bright OOTD! This past weekend, Johnny and I took some charming couples shots and OOTD pics of us rocking a sweater from the Misny Merch holiday collection. Working with Tim Misny is, easily, the coolest thing that my blog has ever done for me other than meeting all of my amazing blogging besties. He is an absolute hoot and it is such fun to create content with him! Unfortunately, Tim wasn’t with us when Johnny and I took pics, but we did have the next best thing: A Tim Misny pillow and a whole lot of bloopers. Check it out:

Not much else to do but get my phone and give up. Maybe next OOTD I can get that foot poppin!

image_50752001

I have often been asked since I started to work with Tim Misny how it even happened in the first place. To better explain, let me create a timeline for you…

May: Tim announced the launch of Misny Merch along with a contest to snap a pic rocking your purchase for a chance to meet him at Misnyland. I told my dad about it and he bought me some swag for my birthday.

A Few Days Later: I shot this OOTD and entered the contest. I later learned that I won!!

November: The Misnyland party got pushed back from a summer BBQ to a fall celebration. Johnny and I went together and nearing the end of the party, I asked Tim if he had time for a quick interview. This “quick” Q & A turned into a half hour long conversation and we only ended our gab sesh because he had to bid farewell to the party guests. We did, however, exchange our contact info with the promise of working together again.

Here & Now: Since the party, Tim and I have been in frequent contact and ended up shooting a holiday video to show off the Misny Merch. You can peep the video on my Facebook page (Sarah Mushenheim) or his (Tim Misny). We have grand plans for all of the content including creating a podcast together, tons of videos, and lots of photo shoots!

This newfound friendship with Tim has been a whirlwind and Johnny and I enjoy our time with him so very much. All I can say is, if you ever have an opportunity put in front of you: Go for it! I was SO nervous to ask Tim for a chat at the party, but I did and everything is coming up Misny and lifewithlilred. I can’t wait to see what we come up with next!

What opportunities has your blog given you? What is something that you were nervous about but did anyways? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

PS: Remember that all proceeds from a Misny Merch purchase goes towards supporting the Cleveland City Mission!

Merry & Bright OOTD

Merry & Bright OOTD

Howdy!! Johnny and I took some couples holiday photos which you saw yesterday to show off some new Misny Merch. My husband simply worked it and our Tim Misny pillow and holiday sweaters didn’t look too bad either! Wearing our Santa suit Tim sweaters together was a hoot. This was my first time wearing a holiday themed piece of clothing since I was little and I couldn’t have picked a better one to break the over two decade long hiatus. While taking couples photos was my primary goal from this shoot, I had to take a few OOTD shots too! May I present, my Merry & Bright OOTD:

image_50461953(8)image_50744065image_50738433(8)image_50434305(6)image_50430721(6)

Who? What? Wear?

Holiday Sweater: Misny Merch

Skinny Jeans: American Eagle Outfitters

Red Heeled Boots: Bamboo, TJMaxx

Red Heart Earrings: SugarFix by Baublebar, Target

Whenever I am styling an OOTD, I always start out by identifying a key piece to create a look around. While it is fun to go shopping in my wardrobe boutique, it can be overwhelming to have all of those options! My Merry & Bright OOTD was an incredibly easy one to style because the Tim Misny holiday sweater was the outfit’s focal point. Not only is the image on the sweater bold, but it is huge too and that was my sign to keep the rest of the look simple. Additional touches like a necklace or cold weather accessories would have instantly formed a cluttered appearance, which is not the way to go when you want to showcase one particular item.

Next on the agenda was jeans and to maintain the “simple is best” approach, I put on my plain black skinnies. Originally, I had on my pair of coated Seven Jeans and it was an instant no no. The sheen of them against the muted sweater didn’t look cohesive in the slightest. It was more like two separate pieces working against each other rather than being complimentary. Instead of trying on more pairs with distressing or patterns, I went with my old standby and am glad I did!

Finally, it was onto shoes and accessories. Since the sweater was green and featured a holiday motif, I decided to go red with the finishing touches. For shoes, I selected a darling pair of heeled boots by Bamboo. The pointed toe and bright hue are so sassy and added some fun attitude to the outfit. These boots also feature an amazing surprise, which you can see in the second to last photo. I love the tassel zipper! Last on the agenda was earrings and I chose a dangly pair of red hearts. These helped create some length to my neck since everything else was covered up and tied the look together from head to toe.

If you are loving the Tim Misny holiday sweater, you can purchase it at Misny Merch and help support the Cleveland City Mission. Keep it locked for the blooper reel tomorrow!

What is your favorite charity to support? What do you plan on wearing to celebrate the holidays? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Happy Holidays To You

Happy Holidays To You

Hello!!! Johnny and I have been having a blast rocking all of our new Misny Merch and we just had to take some couples pictures this weekend to show it off. Misny Merch is truly the gift that keeps on giving. For starters, you will look freaking awesome in it but, most importantly, all proceeds from each purchase goes towards supporting the Cleveland City Mission. You can shop all things Misny Merch here and help battle homelessness in Cleveland with your order! Here are some of my favorite shots with my favorite person and a very special guest:

image_50737153(3)image_50447105(6)image_50763009(1)image_50798593image_50786049(2)image_50728705(4)image_50459137(11)

Unfortunately, our friend Tim Misny couldn’t be with us for this photo shoot. However, we got the next best things! A Tim Misny pillow and holiday sweaters!! Nothing says “merry and bright” like Tim in a Santa suit and I honestly think that Johnny and I will be wearing our sweaters year round. They are SO comfortable and are warm without feeling like you are in your own personal sweat lodge. There is nothing worse than a stuffy sweater and this one by Misny Merch is the definition of “just right”. Whether you wear it on the go or simply to lounge in, this is a piece from the holiday collection that you don’t want to miss!

It’s always fun to play dress up in all of our Misny swag, but the funnest thing was taking pictures with Johnny. As a doting blog husband, he takes my OOTD shots almost every weekend. lifewithlilred would not be the same without all of his help! While we do take selfies fairly often or, rather, I take selfies and Johnny makes a stank face, we don’t have a lot of “nice” pictures together. I was so happy to be able to take these holiday shots with my main squeeze and I treasure them so much. These holiday shots sum up our very loving and very goofy relationship to the T. Showcasing our new Misny Merch was the perfect cherry on top. ❤

Happy Holidays To You from me, Johnny, and Ohio’s own Tim Misny. We hope you have the most amazing time celebrating with your loved ones and basking in the holiday spirit!

Do you have any “ugly” holiday sweaters? What is your favorite merch line by a celebrity? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Hats Off: Misny Merch Edition

Hi darlings!! It has been forever since we’ve had a new edition of Hats Off because I haven’t bought a new hat in… Well, forever. That changes today, though, because we have a few hats from the Misny Merch collection to check out! Ohio’s favorite local celebrity, Tim Misny, is the man and it was such a joy to create content with him. We had so much fun showing off the Misny Merch line in its entirety and shining a light on the Cleveland City Mission. All proceeds from merch purchases directly benefit this amazing charity that helps battle homelessness in Cleveland. Tim is a huge supporter of the Cleveland City Mission and I tip my new Misny Merch hats to all of those who give their time and love to those who need it at the CCM. Let’s take a look at this swag!

image_50425345(6)image_50387713(6)image_50385153(4)

During the fall and winter, I feel like I am constantly rocking a beanie. They are such a classic cold weather staple and it’s just too easy to throw one on in the morning and call it a day. My go to beanie features the phrase “bad hair day” and, yes, it does cover up my crazy hair from first waking up but also assists in my pure laziness lol. During the work week, I am either up at three or four thirty AM and the last thing I am concerned about is the state of my hair in the wee hours of the morn! I am LOVING my new Misny Merch beanies because they are really similar in style to my bad hair day one and offer an infinitely cooler tagline: A variation of Tim’s signature catchphrase, “I’ll make them pay”.

Another fun item from the Misny Merch line are the baseball caps that say “Misny To The Max”. I think the slogan is absolutely hilarious and I also have this cap in black too. In fact, I wore it in the OOTD I styled to win the contest that put me into Tim’s orbit. Everything that Tim does, trust and believe he does it to the max. Whether that be helping the Cleveland City Mission, taking on a personal injury case, or even decorating Misnyland – he’d rather go big or go home. These hats are a fabulous reminder to do everything to the max and see what happens. It applies to me firsthand. If I didn’t have a “to the max” attitude, then I never would have secured the interview that made me and Tim instant besties!!

Live your life to the max and good things will come your way. Live your life in a “Misny To The Max” baseball cap and you’ll look cool while doing it. Buy yours today at Misny Merch and support the Cleveland City Mission!!

How do you live your life to the max? What is your favorite style of hat? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

5 Mistakes You’re Making With Your Laundry

Standard
5 Mistakes You’re Making With Your Laundry

You might think that there isn’t anything that could go too wrong with your laundry. However, if you want to keep the quality, color, and reliability of your clothes, then you had better be ready to offer them the care that they need. Here, we’re going to look at all-too-common mistakes people make when doing laundry, and what you can do to prevent them:

Not sorting them by color:

Yes, you still need to sort your clothes by color. Dark clothes should be washed with dark clothes, light with light, and white with white. We have heard a lot of people saying that many modern t-shirts don’t really require this as much because production doesn’t use dye that can come off in the wash. Unless you know precisely how each piece of clothing is going to act when swirling in hot water together, don’t chance it.

Not following the instructions on the tag:

You might think that the instructions on the tag are just a suggestion and that nothing bad is likely to happen if you don’t follow them. Or, you might be like many people who never check the tag at all when washing clothes. If that happens, then you should expect tearing, shrinking, or stretching as a matter of course. If you want to keep your clothes like new, you have to follow their instructions.

Neglecting to check for optical brighteners:

This is a tip that a lot of people don’t know about. There are laundry detergents out there, sold with the express intent of washing clothes, that don’t really wash them too well. Optical brighteners are a somewhat common ingredient. Rather than focusing on washing them, getting out stains, and keeping them fresh, these detergents act as a sort of dye, brightening the laundry instead. Needless to say, most people want their clothes washed, not just having the appearance of being washed.

Keeping the temperature too high:

Another common mistake is thinking that “hotter is better.” Yes, in higher temperatures, dirt and stains might be able to dissolve more easily. However, this is also worse for your clothes, making them more likely to stretch and lose their consistency, as the high temperatures also add wear and tear to the mix. A cold wash can do your clothes a lot of good and uses less energy than usual.

Not cleaning your washing machine:

You have to take care of your washing machine for it to take care of you. Mold, mildew, detergent residue, and hard water buildups can begin to affect the effectiveness of your clean, as well as the health of the machine. A self-clean cycle with a good washing machine cleaner is all you need.

Many of the mistakes above can be a force of habit, so you might not realize exactly what the problem is until you stop it, and find the alternative a lot better. These tips will help you end up with cleaner, fresher clothes, that don’t suffer any unexpected changes in the process of washing them!
