Hadestown At Playhouse Square Review

Hello!! Last year for Valentine’s Day, Johnny and I went to see Jesus Christ Superstar at Playhouse Square. It looks like a V-Day theater date is becoming our tradition because this weekend, we saw Hadestown. On Saturday night, we got dressed up in our finest to see the show at Playhouse Square’s gorgeous Connor Palace and had what was nothing short of a spiritual experience. Hadestown was, hands down, one of the best shows that I have ever seen in my life. You can peep my date night OOTD later this week but, now, let’s get to my review for this remarkable musical:

image_50457345(2)image_50415361(4)

Hadestown is a somewhat modern retelling of the tragedy of Orpheus and Eurydice set in 1920s New Orleans. Not familiar with Greek mythology? No worries! You do not need to have an ounce of knowledge about it as the show will tell you everything you need to know. Long story short: Hades and his wife Persephone rule the Underworld together. Persephone spends half of her year with her husband, making fall and winter on Earth. Then, she comes back up to the world of the living to gift the people with spring and summer. As the weather becomes harsher on Earth, young Orpheus is on a mission to bring the seasons back to normality with his music. He also hopes to win the love of the sad runaway, Eurydice. Out of desperation, Eurydice makes a deal with Hades and goes to live in the Underworld, leaving it up to Orpheus to bring her back to Earth… Hopefully!

Absolutely everything and anything about Hadestown was glorious and Johnny and I were in awe the entire time. The music, set, cast, musicians, sound, and lighting worked together in perfect unison to create a show that was unlike anything that I have or will ever see again. Let’s start with the set. As opposed to traveling by boat via the River Styx to get to the Underworld, getting there is only a train ride away in Hadestown. The main set is, essentially, a cafe where people pass the time waiting for spring and summer.

Take a look at the picture of the set – at the top is a balcony where Hades and Persephone can snoop on the humans. To the left of the balcony is an opening that works like a garage door as people enter and exit the Underworld. You can also see the circular center that actually revolves, which was completely mind blowing! The real piece de resistance, however, is when the base of the set came apart to reveal Orpheus’s back way to the Underworld to rescue Eurydice. It. Was. Amazing!

The music style of Hadestown included New Orleans jazz, gospel, folk, and blues, which was fabulous in itself. To make it even better, the musicians were onstage the entire time and, man, could they play. It was also such fun to watch as the characters introduced the musicians and allowed them to solo like an actual concert. The musicians were onstage during Jesus Christ Superstar too and Johnny and I are now convinced that this is the only way to watch a musical.

Every single song from Hadestown is a straight up banger and their casting was so well done. The cast is pretty small with only thirteen members (five of which are chorus), and if anyone wasn’t pulling their weight during the show, you would most definitely know. This wasn’t the case with the cast we saw of Hadestown at all, which is surprising because I can usually pinpoint at least something that I don’t like about someone lol.

My favorite songs from the show are “Wedding Song”, “Livin’ It Up On Top” “Way Down Hadestown”, “Wait For Me”, and “Our Lady of the Underground”. It’s hard to narrow it down, though, because I liked everything so much! This was, easily, one of the strongest casts that I have ever seen and every single member was phenomenal. The incomparable Nathan Lee Graham as our narrator, Hermes, was sublime. Brit West as Persephone was mesmerizing and every song she had was my favorite. Matthew Patrick Quinn as Hades was everything with his deep voice and looming presence. Chibueze Ihuoma, who played Orpheus, had the voice of a literal angel and young Hannah Whitley had the sweetest voice as Eurydice. And, of course, the Fates and the chorus can’t be ignored and enhanced every scene beautifully.

During Hadestown, I laughed – but I mainly cried lol. I am quite familiar with Greek mythology and know the story of Orpheus and Eurydice well. Having this prior knowledge made every song between Orpheus and Eurydice even sadder and more haunting and I was SOBBING during “Wait For Me”. Throughout the performance, I was mentally willing for it to end differently and I reacted to it as if I had heard the story for the first time. I think I was so engrossed in the show that it made me forget everything I knew already and that is how you know that it was incredible.

Do not walk. RUN to see Hadestown if you have the opportunity. I promise you that it will be an experience you will never, ever forget.

What is your favorite song from Hadestown? What is your favorite thing about live theater? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Valentine’s Day Chocolate

Valentine’s Day Chocolate

Hello everyone and Happy Valentine’s Day! Last week, I spent a wonderful free afternoon making chocolate with my mother-in-law. This was the second time I have made chocolate with Johnny’s mom and it was even more fun and satisfying than I remember from our Christmas candy session. Johnny finally brought home the end results of our handiwork this past weekend and our Valentine’s Day chocolate came out perfectly, if I do say so myself! Check it out:

image_50433793(1)image_50457601(5)image_50397185(5)image_50728449

Making your own chocolate can be as easy or intricate as you would like it to be. You can take your time and paint details into the molds or you could simply pour the melted chocolate in and call it a day. Johnny’s mom and I did a healthy combination of both methods and the most time consuming project was definitely the pretzel rods. The molds took forever to paint but they turned out so nice that I wasn’t complaining! They were also freaking delicious and are my favorite creation from the batch. 😀

Johnny’s mom is no stranger to making chocolate and used to have her own small candy business with a friend. And, I’m sure if she wanted to, she could open her own candy shop now with her stockpile of chocolate wafers, molds, and supplies. I was surprised to learn that all of her chocolate making gear comes from Mr. Bulky’s, which is a bulk candy store in our area, as the name suggests lol. I had no idea that her craft was so attainable and affordable and it makes me want to go out and buy my own supplies. However, I would much rather spend more time making chocolates together with Johnny’s mom, instead! ❤

I am insanely proud of how my chocolate came out and I am so looking forward to making Easter chocolate at chez in-laws next month. We will also have a special guest because my niece, Val Gal, is going to join us. I can’t wait for her to take part in the chocolate making fun too!

What is your favorite kind of candy? What kind of chocolate do you prefer? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

The Importance Of Taking Interest In Your Child’s Hobbies

The Importance Of Taking Interest In Your Child’s Hobbies

In a world where children are constantly glued to their electronic devices, it’s more important than ever for parents to take an interest in their children’s hobbies. Doing so can help foster a love of learning and exploration that will stay with them throughout their lives. Here are a few reasons why it’s important to take an interest in the subjects that are special to your child:

It shows them you care:

Taking an interest in what your children are passionate about demonstrates that you value their interests, hobbies, and opinions. This reinforces the bond between parent and child and lets them know they have the freedom to explore and pursue whatever interests them. In addition, it reminds them that you are always there to support them in their endeavors.

It encourages exploration and creativity:

By taking an interest in your children’s interests, you can encourage exploration and creativity by suggesting ideas or activities related to their hobbies. You can also provide resources for further research or offer assistance as needed. This allows for a better understanding of the hobby and provides an outlet for creative expression and problem-solving skills.

It keep communication open:

When parents take an active interest in their children’s interests, it encourages conversation and dialogue between the two parties. It is important for the parents to stay connected with each other and for children to feel comfortable communicating any issues or concerns they may have.

It helps them develop their skills:

As the adult, you can help foster the development of their specific skills related to their interests and hobbies. This could involve providing additional training or instruction, offering advice or guidance, or providing a space for them to practice and hone their talents.

It builds confidence:

When parents take an active interest in their children, it often helps to build a sense of self-worth and confidence. This is especially important during adolescence, where identity formation is critical; showing your children that you believe in them and their passions makes them more likely to engage positively with their activities, boosting their overall confidence level.

It helps them stay focused:

When children are passionate about something like collecting Kevin Burge Sports Cards, painting, or a sport, it’s much easier for them to stay focused and engaged in the task at hand. This is because they’re more likely to be motivated by their own interests rather than outside influences or pressures. Taking an interest in your children’s hobbies can help keep them motivated and on track with their goals.

Taking an interest in your children’s hobbies will show that you care while also helping them develop confidence, creativity, problem-solving skills, communication skills, and a passion for learning. It also provides opportunities for parents and children to bond over shared experiences and memories. Take some time out of your day today to talk with your children about what they’re passionate about and get involved in their hobbies. You’ll be glad you did!

How To Encourage Your Child’s Creative Side

Standard
How To Encourage Your Child’s Creative Side

Children’s overall development depends on fostering creativity because it allows them to think critically, express themselves, and learn problem-solving techniques. A child’s imagination can be given a fun and interesting outlet through creativity, which enables them to enjoyably explore new ideas and concepts. Today, we’re going to take a look at some of the ways you can encourage your child’s creative side:

Provide Art Supplies:

Giving kids access to a variety of art supplies is among the simplest ways to encourage their creativity. Items like paints, markers, crayons, paper, and clay can be categorized under this. Children can explore their creativity and think outside of the box by being encouraged to experiment with various materials and methods.

Imaginative Play:

Being able to create their own characters, worlds, and stories allows children to engage in imaginative play, which is a crucial aspect of childhood. You can provide props like dress-up clothes, toy animals, and a designated play area in your home to encourage this kind of play.

Read Books and Tell Stories:

Children’s imaginations can be greatly sparked by reading books and sharing stories with them. While storytelling enables children to develop their own interpretations of the stories they hear, books can introduce them to new concepts and worlds. Books are a great way to stimulate imagination and grow vocabulary. As an added bonus, you can organize crafts and activities based around your child’s favorite book.

Create a Craft Corner:

Give your kids a dedicated area for creative endeavors by designating a space in your home for craft activities. An inviting craft space that kids will enjoy using can be easily made with the help of a small table and chairs and supply storage.

Encourage Exploration and Experimentation:

In order to foster creativity, it’s crucial to let kids experiment and explore with a variety of tools and methods. This can entail experimenting with new art materials, trying out various techniques, or discovering fresh approaches to creating.

Attend Art Classes or Workshops:

Children can benefit from structured opportunities to explore their creativity in a safe environment through art classes or workshops. Their confidence can be boosted and their artistic abilities can be encouraged by working with other kids and learning from qualified teachers. These kinds of activities might take place at daycares near you too.

Take Nature Walks:

Children who spend time in nature can be more creative because they can experience the sights, sounds, and textures of the natural world. Go on a nature walk or scavenger hunt together and encourage them to observe their surroundings, which can help them come up with new ideas and engage their imagination.

Foster creativity in your children with the tips above and watch their imagination soar to new heights!

Lil Red’s Book Club: Verity By Colleen Hoover Edition

Lil Red’s Book Club: Verity By Colleen Hoover Edition

Hi!! It has been over a month since the last edition of Lil Red’s Book Club and that is because I have been insanely busy! I was so excited to have some extra time to read recently and started Verity by Colleen Hoover last week. At first, I was really into it. However, this ended up being the worst and *pardon my French* most fucked up thing I have ever read in a long time. Before we get started, I am going to be placing a big fat trigger warning on Verity for so many reasons – murder, infanticide, child abuse, highly disturbing content, and that’s just naming a few. Now, let’s get to it:

image_50459905(2)

Lowen is a struggling author who hasn’t left the home in weeks as she cares for her ailing mom. However, she must step foot outside today because she has a meeting for a potential new offer that must be conducted in person. As she waits to cross the busy streets of Manhattan, she witnesses a man get hit by a car and is standing close enough to get her clothes bloodied. A handsome stranger literally gives Lowen the shirt off of his back in a chance encounter and she arrives at her meeting in a men’s shirt thinking she will never see this guy again. WRONG!

The stranger is named Jeremy and the meeting Lowen is attending is being held on his wife’s behalf. The highly successful author, Verity Crawford, is Jeremy’s wife and is unable to complete her contract after a car accident that left her with no cognitive function. Verity is the author of a series told from the villain’s perspective and has three more books to be written. Cue: Lowen to take over.

After rejecting initially, Lowen agrees because the paycheck is insane and she is essentially homeless. Because Verity cannot collaborate with Lowen in a traditional sense, Jeremy opens the doors of his wife’s home office so she can begin looking for notes and drafts to assist in her new gig. Of course, Lowen would never go to a complete stranger’s home without doing her due diligence and researching the Crawford family. She learns that the Crawfords had twin girls that died exactly six months apart from each other, a son who remains, and a mother who can no longer interact with him or her husband.

Knowing so much already about the family’s tragedies makes Lowen feel uneasy and she spends the majority of her first days at the family home barricaded in the office. Although she can find no notes of any use for the books she must write, she finds so much more: a manuscript for Verity’s unpublished autobiography. Lowen justifies cracking it open to get a better glimpse of Verity as a person and ends up learning so much more than she bargained for.

Verity’s autobiography paints a brutally honest picture of herself as a psychopath. She is madly in love with Jeremy to the point of obsession and was not happy to find out she was pregnant with twin girls – two girls that would take Jeremy away from her. In her own words, Verity describes her monstrous acts of the abuse she doled out to her daughters and her manipulation to cover it up. Her autobiography begs the question of if the death of the twins was accidental or completely intentional.

It’s not only Verity’s manuscript that makes Lowen uneasy, it is Verity herself, who is at home and being cared for around the clock by a nurse. Verity needs people to move her body for her, so why does Lowen keep hearing the pattering of feet at night? Or how is the TV in Verity’s room turning off on its own when the remote is out of her reach?

The more time Lowen spends in the Crawford home, the more paranoid she becomes that Verity’s injuries might not be real. And, as Lowen begins crushing on Jeremy and caring for his son, the more convinced she is that they are all in danger. Is Verity actually hurt? And what is the truth behind her damning manuscript? Read Verity to find out!

I have SO much to say about Verity lol. It’s funny because as I was writing the synopsis, I am sure you can all agree that this sounds like a book that I would love. However, I ended up absolutely hating this book. I honestly didn’t know what I was reading and it felt like so many story lines being added together haphazardly. Part of Verity read like soft core porn, some of it was like reading a soap opera, and gruesome content seemed like it was added in purely for shock value.

All of you know that I am a huge thriller, horror, true crime fan and, I shit you not, this was probably one of the most disturbing books I have ever read. Reading Verity’s autobiography was so infuriating to me that I almost stopped reading it completely. It is that bad and I think that is saying a lot coming from me. I finished the book solely because I refuse to not read something in its entirety once I have started it and was unable to find any redeeming qualities.

It wasn’t the content of Verity alone that made it such a flop but it was the way it was written too. I found Colleen Hoover’s writing style to be juvenile at best. The characters were incredibly shallow and despite knowing the bad things that happened to them, you didn’t really know them at all. Lowen, for example, was such a lackluster heroine and Hoover built up her past to make her seem tragic when all she really suffered from was sleepwalking and a poor relationship with her mom. Jeremy was pretty much only there as man candy. And, Verity was plain awful but you never learned the “why” behind it. All this book did was leave me with expletives and question marks.

This doesn’t happen often, but I am going to rate Verity with a negative infinity out of ten stars and wouldn’t recommend it to my worst enemy. This book straight up sucked and I will never read anything else by Colleen Hoover. Epic, epic failure.

What are you currently reading? What should I read next? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Work/Life Balance

Standard
Work/Life Balance

Hello!! I don’t know about all of you, but I have been feeling So. Freaking. Exhausted. At the beginning of the new year, I formed a partnership with a local tech entrepreneur and have been putting in work. So much so, that I have been clocking in close to fifty hours every week between my jobs for the past month and change. It is tiring but the opportunities that have opened up for me are very exciting!

The work/life balance is something that everyone talks about. However, is it something that they are actively trying to pursue or does it just sound good? Lol, I definitely fall under the “think about it, but don’t do it” category and I know that this is something I need to change to avoid burnout. If you, too, struggle with making time for you amidst a busy schedule, you are not alone! In fact, you are in great company because I’m right there with you! Let’s explore some ideas we can all work on to achieve a better work/life balance:

Take Breaks:

During the work day, I try to allow myself a few five minute breaks throughout to get up, stretch, and hydrate. You can do whatever you see fit, though, to relax for a spell. Watch a funny YouTube video, read a few comic strips, grab a snack – whatever is clever. It is so easy to just keep on working even when our brain is literally telling us to take a pause for a couple of minutes. Remember, that the work you are completing when your mind is feeling mushy probably isn’t going to be something that you are fully satisfied with.

Make Meals:

I, personally, notice that I am not getting a proper work/life balance when I am not cooking meals for dinner. This was actually the first key indicator that I needed to slow down a bit when I saw that my fresh groceries were going to waste. Of course, no one is saying to cook a five star meal every night but I always feel better when I have something homemade for dinner. My goal is to at least make a few simple meals per week because I enjoy cooking as much as I do eating!

Make Plans (And Stick With Them!):

I’m going to be honest with all of you, the past several weeks of this workathon, I have had so many plans and I pretty much bailed on every single one. I was just too wiped out and canceling made me feel worse. This taught me that, for the time being, I need to make plans that I know I can stick with because anything more would be stretching myself too thin. However, we all need to give ourselves permission to have fun so don’t cut all evening activities out and fill your schedule with things you enjoy when you are able.

It’s Okay To Say No:

Always remember that it is okay to say no when you are feeling especially overrun. Knowing your limitations of what can and can’t be achieved in a certain time period will go a long way and can stop burnout in its tracks. I am such a people pleaser that I rarely say no to anything work related and I know that this is something that I really should improve on.

When a work/life balance seems impossible, carve out small periods for you throughout the day until you get back on track with a normal schedule. You will thank yourself during your next mini break!

What stresses you out about work? Do you achieve a good work/life balance? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Clinique All About Clean Facial Soap Review

Clinique All About Clean Facial Soap Review

Hello! My aunt generously gifted me with an adorable makeup bag filled with skin care samples by Clinique. I was pretty excited to try all of these goodies out because I have used makeup by Clinique before but never their skin care. The samples I tested out were a serum, moisturizer, and eye cream and I can’t say that I was overly impressed with any of them. However, I just started using the All About Clean Facial Soap by Clinique a few days ago and I am loving it! Let’s discuss:

image_50389249(1)

I have used several ultra gentle cleansers in the past and was disappointed by literally every single one. None of them ever lathered well or did anything to make my skin feel cleaner or more nourished in any way shape or form. When I saw the Clinique face wash, I assumed it was going to be another similar situation thanks to the word “mild”. I wasn’t expecting much when I used the facial soap for the first time and ended up being very pleasantly surprised.

Every morning for the past couple of days, I have been using a quarter size dollop of the Clinique cleanser and it is So. Freaking. Nice. It is unscented, which I don’t feel one way or the other about but, most importantly, it lathers like a dream. When using this product for the first time, I couldn’t believe all of the soapy bubbles that formed as I was washing my face. Although the facial soap didn’t make my skin feel moisturized, it made it feel so incredibly clean and that was very refreshing.

The asking price for a full bottle of the Clinique All About Clean Facial Soap is around twenty-four dollars. I would never pay full price for it but this is actually one product that I would consider paying a bit more for at TJMaxx. The Clinique cleanser is definitely not the move to use during the winter because it doesn’t moisturize. BUT, I think that it would be a perfect product to use during the summertime and will be keeping my eyes peeled to see if I can find it on the cheap.

If you are comfortable with the full price and are looking for a milder cleanser, you will love the All About Clean Facial Soap by Clinique. This would also be a good product to start dabbling in skin care with if you do not have a set routine already. I will be upset when I am done with my travel size tester!

Do you like Clinique skin care? How does your skin care routine change with the seasons? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah
