Must Have Fall Wardrobe Staples

For many, myself included, fall is the most beloved season of all. The weather, holidays, activities, and changing leaves make for a beautiful and fun time of the year. And, oh yeah, the fashion isn’t bad either! Fall fashion is a blast and provides an opportunity for a killer OOTD every time you walk out the door. Layering pieces and cold weather accessories are all must haves in a solid fall wardrobe arsenal. Here are a few that will keep you OOTD ready all season long:

Statement Jacket:

When it comes to fall clothing, priority number one should be a fantastic statement jacket. A good coat or jacket can turn the most basic outfit into something blog worthy by simply slipping it on. There is a coat for every style and occasion and it is one of my favorite pieces to indulge in when shopping. Feeling edgy? Try a moto jacket! Classically cute? A topper jacket or trench coat is your new best friend. Comfy cozy? A soft cardigan jacket will be perfect for wrapping yourself in.

For layering purposes, remember to follow this golden rule: You never want to layer two bulky or tight articles of clothing on top of each other. If you have a looser fitting coat, a thick sweater underneath is fine. On the other hand, a tight fitting moto jacket should be paired with a thinner top or sweater underneath to keep the proportions of the outfit in check.

Boots, Baby:

Put your summer sandals and wedges away because boot season is in full swing! Like a good jacket, a bold pair of shoes can instantly transform an outfit. Look for heeled boots to wear during an outing and some cool combat boots to sport during a fall hike. To add some extra visual interest, you can try patterns like snakeskin, cheetah print, or floral. Hardware embellished boots with chains or studs are also sure to be a hit!

Cold Weather Accessories:

There are three must have cold weather accessories to not only keep you nice and warm but oh so fashionable: Scarves, hats, and gloves. These pieces will help tie your fall OOTDs together and are a great way to spice up your wardrobe without breaking the bank. When it comes to these accessories, the possibilities are endless! Do you want mittens or fingerless gloves? An infinity scarf or a pashmina? How about a floppy or cloche hat? Regardless of what you choose, you will be toasty and always ready for a photo op.

Cardigans/Sweaters:

For maximum comfort, warmth, and style, a gorgeous cardigan or sweater is the way to go! You can keep things simple with a plain one in fall hues like burnt orange, mustard yellow, and forest green. Or you can take things to the next level with patterns like polka dots, Halloween themes, or thick stripes. For many a fall OOTD, comfy cozy is the name of the game. Snap a pic in your fall sweater or cardi with a Pumpkin Spice Latte in hand and you just broke Instagram!

It doesn’t take much to revamp your fall wardrobe – just a few of the pieces above will suffice. Now, go werk those fall fits and hit the apple orchard!

What is your favorite piece of fall clothing? How do you upgrade your wardrobe as the seasons change? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Pumpkin Patch Party OOTD Bloopers

Hello everyone and welcome to the blooper reel from my Pumpkin Patch Party OOTD! While I love to show off the great pictures from an OOTD shoot, part of me likes posting the bloopers even more because it humors me. I am a firm believer in the phrase “waste not, want not” and I suppose that applies to terrible pictures, as well! Lol, check them out in all of their glory:

As you all know, Johnny takes what feels like a thousand pictures in under ten minutes per OOTD shoot. Sometimes, I am model level WERKING and the bloopers are minimal. Other times, it feels like a majority of the shots taken are bloopers! It is such a mixed bag and the Pumpkin Patch Party outfit gave me a solid half winners and half total losers lol. Either way, it makes for a good time going through the end results. 😀

Johnny’s proudest picture from our time at Heritage Farms was, easily, the leaf on my butt. Once I pointed it out to him, he spent about ten minutes looking at it, laughing, and then repeating the process. He also made it a point to zoom in on this faux pas to really show off his handiwork. He claims he “didn’t notice it at all” but I am thinking otherwise *Face palm*. Regardless, he is the best blog husband so I can’t be too mad. ❤ 😉

It is a breath of fresh air to poke some good old fashioned fun at myself after talking up an outfit and pictures. Remember, for every good pic an influencer posts, there are probably twenty like the ones you see above!

How To Adjust To Life In A New Country

Standard
How To Adjust To Life In A New Country

Moving to a new country can be an exciting but daunting experience. There are so many things to think about, from finding a place to live and getting a job, to learning the language and customs. It can be difficult to know where to start. But don’t worry, we’re here to help! In this post, we’ll give you some tips on how to adjust to life in a new country:

Learn the Language:

One of the most important things you can do when moving to a new country is to learn the language. This will make it much easier to get by on a day to day basis. It will also help you make friends and build a support network. If you’re not sure where to start, there are plenty of resources available online like Bueno Spanish and in your local community. Many countries also offer language classes for immigrants.

Find a Place to Live:

Another big task when moving to a new country is finding somewhere to live. If you’re moving alone, you might want to consider renting an apartment or room in a shared house. This can be a great way to meet people and get settled into your new home. If you’re moving with family or friends, you’ll need to find somewhere that has enough space for everyone. Start by looking online and asking people you know if they have any recommendations.

Get a Job:

If you’re moving to a new country for work, then you’ll need to sort out your employment situation before you go. But even if you’re not moving for work, it’s still a good idea to get a job as soon as possible after arriving in your new home. This will help you meet people and make some extra money. Check out job websites and classified ads online or ask people you know if they know of any openings in their companies.

Get Registered:

You’ll also want to ensure that you can get yourself registered in the new country for anything you need. This means having the necessary documents readily available. Where possible, register yourself as a resident with the local authorities. This will help you get access to things like healthcare and other government services. Even look out for things like a Spanish speaking dentist or doctor so you can feel supported while adjusting to the new language and culture.

Make Friends:

One way to meet people abroad or in your own community is to join a club or take a class. This can be a great way to meet people with similar interests. Another option is to volunteer in your community so you can give back and also meet like-minded people. Finally, don’t be afraid to strike up conversations with people you meet in everyday life. Whether you’re waiting in line at the grocery store or getting your morning coffee, taking the initiative to chat with those around you can help you make new friends in no time.

Moving in your own community can be difficult let alone a brand new country. Follow the tips above to help the process go as smooth as possible!

Pumpkin Patch Party OOTD Bonus Pics

Hello!! We are back to our regularly scheduled programming of some bonus pics from my Pumpkin Patch Party OOTD! Johnny and I had such a blast during our date day at Heritage Farms and I love the baby pumpkins that we picked out so very much. We can’t wait to take our nieces there to share in the fall fun with hay rides and a huge children’s section decked out with games and crafts. Although, I don’t know if I’ll be able to put together an OOTD as good as this one:

image_50460673(7)image_50451457image_50736897(2)image_50443009(1)image_50740481(1)image_50428161(8)image_50458113(2)

This past week, it was like a flip switched in Ohio and my neck of the woods truly began feeling like fall. Seemingly overnight, the leaves began to change colors and the temperatures dropped to the pleasant chill of an autumn day. I can’t even fathom a guess at the amount of times that I have said “look at that tree” already lol. Say what you will about Ohio but, come fall time, my state delivers with postcard worthy beauty.

Heritage Farms is located near Peninsula, Ohio and this area is filled with Metro Parks, bike trails, orchards, and the most delicious ice cream on planet Earth. It was such a lovely drive to get there, as we went through the Cuyahoga Valley and passed many a good tree. I thought that I had been in fall mode since September but this OOTD and an afternoon at the pumpkin patch made me think otherwise!

Although I have a lot of unique clothing in my wardrobe, I try to achieve balance through classic styles so that I can wear everything for forever. Each piece in this Pumpkin Patch Party OOTD is something that I can picture wearing now or when I’m forty. At twenty-eight, I often forget that I am technically a “grown up”. However, this fit made me feel like woman, hear me roar. This is, arguably, the most grown up OOTD that I have ever wore and it definitely took me out of my comfort zone. But, I achieved my goal of a classic fall outfit and what better place to wear it than to a classic fall activity like going to a pumpkin patch?!

There are so many different ways to expand your fashion horizons in the fall and I can’t wait to keep exploring them with all of you. Tune in tomorrow for bloopers from this shoot! We will also be revisiting my A Night At The Theater OOTD series next week after a date night at Playhouse Square this weekend. See you then!

When does it start feeling like fall to you? What is your favorite thing about fall fashion? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

3 Common Habits That Could Affect Your Oral Health

Standard
3 Common Habits That Could Affect Your Oral Health

Your oral health is not only impacted by poor hygiene. Other things you do can introduce bacteria into the oral cavity, chip a tooth, or harm your gums. For example, frequent snacking and sugars harms the tooth enamel. With 3.5 billion people living with one oral disease, it helps to know more about how to avoid becoming a part of the statistics. With adequate knowledge on this subject, you can take better care of your teeth. Here are some common habits to avoid for better oral health:

Chewing ice cubes:

Pagophagia is the term used to describe the compulsive craving for ice cubes, frost, or snow. Medical researchers say it is a subtype of pica and is often triggered by iron deficiency. For some people, however, chewing ice cubes is a learned habit and, after a while, becomes difficult to stop. Indeed, a few ice cubes in a glass of water is a welcome drink on a hot day. The danger, however, is getting your teeth to chew through them.

Ice’s solid and cold nature makes it unfriendly to the teeth when chewed. It can cause cracks and chips or displace previous tooth fillings. Additionally, chewing ice can harm any other dental restoration you’ve done. A crack resulting from ice can go down to the base. It is painful and can be costly to repair. The recommended way to help stop this habit is to drink through a straw. That way, the temptation to slip a cube into your mouth is greatly reduced.

Thumb sucking:

Thumb sucking puts a lot of pressure on your kids’ permanent teeth, especially those in the upper front of the mouth. The sucking causes forward pressure on the upper front teeth, resulting in an altered appearance of the dentition. Apart from the impact on the teeth, the jaw structure can be affected too.

According to research, when permanent teeth cut through the gum, they naturally need more space. This is because permanent teeth are usually larger. Therefore, the thumb-sucking motion applies more pressure on the new set of teeth to overlap the lower ones. Sometimes, it can cause an overbite in a child’s dentition and they will need a local dentist to align the teeth and keep them in place. In the future, however, the solution is to help them stop thumb-sucking to prevent what can be costly repairs.

Brushing too hard:

In your attempt to whiten your teeth or remove stains, aggressive brushing can cause problems. It can result in enamel erosion and sore and receding gums. A soft bristle toothbrush is best for cleaning your teeth. This can be done before or after flossing. A report by the Wall Street Journal indicated that 20% of the population indulges in overbrushing. Consequently, many people have had to spend lots of money on gum grafting.

Vigorous brushing does not remove stains. You will need a dentist to do that job. Being overly diligent in your brushing can do more harm to your oral health. If you find yourself engaging in this habit, hopefully, this is your cue to be gentle with your dentition.

Taking good care of your teeth is just as important as taking care of the rest of your body. Quitting harmful habits will result in better oral health, which is a great reason to smile!

Lil Red’s Book Club: The It Girl By Ruth Ware Edition

Lil Red’s Book Club: The It Girl By Ruth Ware Edition

Hello everyone! We interrupt your regularly scheduled bonus pictures from my Pumpkin Patch Party OOTD with a brand new edition of Lil Red’s Book Club. Today, without giving any spoilers away, we will be discussing a thriller by Ruth Ware called The It Girl. To be frank, I have never been overly impressed with Ware’s books but this one was very good. In fact, it’s my favorite book that she has written. Before we begin, I will be placing a trigger warning on The It Girl for violence and disturbing content. Now, let’s get to it:

image_67231745(1)

Hannah Jones appears to have it all. A husband, Will, who she has loved since first sight, a baby on the way, and the charming life of a couple in their late twenties. Could she have said the same for herself a decade ago? Not at all. Ten years ago, her roommate, April, at the prestigious Pelham College at Oxford was brutally murdered. Despite her seemingly picture perfect life, Hannah struggles with this on a daily basis. She did not have a role in April’s death but she played a big part in the trial.

During her time at Pelham, Hannah was joined at the hip with the gorgeous, effervescent April. April was, indeed, an It Girl and everyone knew about her beauty and wealth. Their friend circle of Will, Hugh, Ryan, and Emily seemed to revolve solely around April but her and Hannah shared a bond that only roommates could have. Hannah felt completely at home in her new life at Pelham except for one major issue… John Neville.

Neville was a porter at Pelham and he seemed to have it out for Hannah from the jump. Hannah was uncomfortable walking alone and would plan her routes to avoid John but he seemed to be everywhere. He was also the last person to see April alive and is what sealed his conviction for her death due to Hannah’s testimony. There have always been whispers that Neville was innocent. However, his recent death in prison means he will never see justice and the case is blown back open. If Neville is innocent, then April’s killer is still on the loose ten years later.

After Hannah talks to a journalist who claims to have new information on the case, she begins to doubt her story even more than she already did. Now, it is up to her to put the pieces together and find out what really happened the night of April’s death. If Neville is out of the picture, everyone is now a suspect. Her old friends, teachers, and even her own husband. Will Hannah solve the case of April’s killer? Read The It Girl to find out!

While I have enjoyed previous Ruth Ware books before, I have never felt too excited when she has a new book out. In comparison to other thrillers, her novels always seem to fall just a bit short. Needless to say, I was incredibly surprised with how invested I was in The It Girl right from the start. It was completely unputdownable and I couldn’t wait for free time so that I could read more!

The It Girl featured one of my favorite things of going back and forth between Hannah’s past at Pelham College to present day. This allowed you to get to know the main suspects in their youth and in current times. It also made it very difficult to pinpoint the killer because all of these players were incredibly likeable despite the usual flaws of first year college students. And, any tension in present times from them felt understandable after ten years of trying to get April’s death out of their minds. Every lead felt like a Red Herring and it made you relate to Hannah even more as she continued to second guess everything she thought she knew.

I loved Hannah as a main character and I thought that she was really brave. Her pregnancy also heightened the suspense because her sleuthing could turn dangerous at any moment. It was so easy to sympathize with her after all that she had been through. I definitely spent the whole book rooting for her to have the life she always wanted.

My advice if you read this book and you like to try and figure out the grand reveal ahead of time is to go with your gut. Like Hannah, I second guessed and then vetoed one of my initial instincts and I ended up being right on the money. It’s also very important to pay close attention to everything said and done at Pelham because it will all come back soon enough!

I am going to award The It Girl with a seven and a half star rating. I was originally going to give it an eight but I realized that that was only because I liked it better than other Ruth Ware novels. Was this the most groundbreaking thing that I have ever read? No. But, it was a fun read and it put Ware back on the map for me after years of feeling wishy washy. I think you all will like it too!

What are you currently reading? What should I read next? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Revamp Your Laundry Room

Standard
Revamp Your Laundry Room

The laundry room is, easily, one of the most forgotten rooms in the home even though it serves such an important purpose. Often tucked away in the basement or a “junk room” the washer and dryer tend to go unnoticed and unappreciated despite using it almost every day. But, it doesn’t have to be that way! Turn doing the laundry into your favorite chore with these simple fixes:

Evaluate The Space:

First things first, let’s do a quick check on your appliances. Take a look at your washer and inspect your dryer and avoid potential dangers. All good? Perfect! Now, does your laundry room have the space for some additional shelving and maybe a small table to assist with folding? If so, you are well set! If not, you could designate a different area in your home for folding and placing your freshly laundered clothes. This leads us to our next point…

Shelving Or Cubby Shelves:

Standard shelving units in your laundry room or elsewhere are fantastic. This is ideal for storing your detergent, stain remover, laundry bins, and dryer sheets. However, a cubby shelving unit might be just what you need if you want some extra assistance with the chore. Once the laundry is folded, you could place each piece in the cubby for your partner or children. Then, it is up to them to put it away themselves. Don’t forget that your laundry room can also be used to house shoes with a door fixture or other odds and ends like cleaning supplies!

Add Some Fun:

Time and time again, I hear that doing laundry is a least favorite chore. You can change this, though! There are all kinds of things that you can do to add a touch of fun to your laundry space. Bring in a radio and listen to your favorite songs, add some essential oil to a diffuser and enjoy some aromatherapy, or paint the walls a peppy shade. No one loves doing housework but you can make it tolerable, at the very least!

Hone Your Craft:

Maybe, you don’t like doing the laundry because your folding skills aren’t quite up to snuff. That’s okay! Purchasing folding boards can give you perfectly folded T’s in no time. A clutter free table can also be very helpful. And, if all else fails: Have a lot of clothing hangers handy to just hang things up – no wrinkles required!

Give your washer and dryer the space that they deserve with the tips above. Who knows? You might just love doing laundry yet!

Repairs That Can’t Wait

Standard
Repairs That Can’t Wait

If you look around your home, there are sure to be some issues that could use a little attention. Squeaky doors, threadbare carpets, or an unsteady shelf are annoyances but not necessarily things that need an immediate solution. On the other hand, there are some problems that you shouldn’t wait to fix. We’re talking appliances and fixtures in the home that can prevent you from living your normal life. Let’s discuss further:

Appliances:

Broken appliances are the first thing that comes to mind when you think of things that could alter your normal routine. A washer or dryer on the fritz means a trip to the laundromat. Broken refrigerator? Say goodbye to all of your perishable food. And, of course, a nonfunctional oven means spending additional money on takeout. These are all issues that need to be repaired ASAP as the longer you hold off could lead to even more costly repairs or become a safety hazard.

In the instance of a broken appliance, it is so important to call in the professionals. You also want someone who specializes specifically in your problem, say for common stove issues and solutions. If you have a newer appliance that is malfunctioning, the repairs might be covered under a warranty if you purchased one so do check on that to help save money.

Weather Related Issues:

It is never a good thing when the weather outside is coming into your home. This means drafty doors, cracks in the walls, or leaks and breakages in the roof. Not only can this invite pests into your home but it can also be a major health and safety hazard for you and your family. An out of shape roof or leaks can cause mold and damp, which can exacerbate issues like asthma. Drafts and cracks can also make for bitter temperatures inside your home come winter. These are all problems that should be prioritized for everyone’s well being.

Heating/Air Conditioning:

A too hot or too cold home is just downright unpleasant and could mean that something is wrong with your HVAC system. The solution might be as simple as a tune up or a few replacement parts or it could be a complete overhaul of your system entirely. Remember, it is best to have a professional check on this annually for the comfort and safety it provides. You can find an expert by entering a search for “HVAC contractor in Tampa, FL” or your local area. Stifling temps indoors in the summer can lead to someone overheating while too cold in the winter can cause flooding and frozen pipes. A freshly repaired HVAC system will keep your home just right all year round.

When you are considering repairs, priority number one should always be if the problem is effecting your family’s comfort and safety. If it is, then it is time to call a professional!

Safe Haven: Improve Your Home’s Security

Standard
Safe Haven: Improve Your Home’s Security

Your home should be your ultimate safe haven and it can be scary when it doesn’t always feel that way. Whether your place needs extra protection or you simply could benefit from the peace of mind, there is a fix for whatever you need! Let’s look at a few ways to improve your home’s security so you can feel perfectly safe and sound:

Meet The Neighbors:

Socializing can, admittedly, be a pain. However, knowing your neighbors is a free way to have an extra set of eyes on your home. And, who knows? You might just make a friend! A neighbor who you’re on friendly terms with will be able to keep an eye on your house while you’re on vacation or simply pick up a package while you’re at work all day. Regardless, it can only help!

Outdoor Property:

It makes sense that your belongings indoors are easier to protect than the things outside of your home. This goes for cars, outdoor furniture, and gardening equipment. To rectify this, you can protect the Range Rover with an anti theft system and the same goes for any other type of car. You can also install motion lights on your property, which is a great deterrent for an uninvited guest.

Privacy Hedges:

Whether you want extra protection or simply some beauty is your call! Privacy hedges can come in all shapes and forms from huge hydrangeas and rhododendrons to tall grass and trees. Either way, it’s going to be pretty and keep your windows or outdoor seating areas out of the line of sight of people who pass by. Hello, most beautiful house on the block!

Make Necessary Repairs:

Flimsy doors, windows, and locks are an open invitation into your home. For your replacement fixtures, think strong and durable. While you don’t need to turn your home into a bank vault, a little extra oomph in the sturdiness department will certainly go a long way. Don’t forget a camera doorbell when you are revamping your front door for an additional peace of mind.

Better home security doesn’t always mean spending a fortune on cameras and systems. Sometimes, it just means planting some large growing flowers or getting to know the people who live next door to sleep easier at night!

Pumpkin Patch Party OOTD

Standard
Pumpkin Patch Party OOTD

Hello everyone and welcome to a brand new OOTD here on lifewithlilred! This past Saturday, Johnny and I visited the Heritage Farms pumpkin patch and had such a wonderful time. For an activity that is so autumn, I wanted to style a really classic fall outfit. I drew lots of inspiration from fashion stories in magazines and clothing catalogues and this is what I came up with:

image_50437633(3)image_50416385(6)image_50736385image_50737921(1)image_50461185(3)image_50435585(2)image_50439425(1)image_50727169

Who? What? Wear?

This outfit is, honestly, a far cry from my usual OOTDs and I think that’s why I liked it so much. I was channeling my inner 1940s fall queen and I definitely felt like it too! I had been planning out this look for a while but was waiting for the right outing to wear it to. The pumpkin patch seemed like the perfect place to wear a classic fall fit and Heritage Farms delivered with so many scenic areas to snap some shots.

Figuring out the base of this outfit with the button down and pinstripe pants was easy for several reasons. I adore the ladybug button down from Zara and had been wanting to incorporate it into a fall OOTD. As you all know, I refuse to buy anything but black skinny jeans and we can agree that blue jeans would have been the better option for the top.

However, I did have my navy pinstripe pants and I knew that I had found a match. These Free People slacks feel so vintage and I don’t get to wear them as often as I would like. They embodied the vibe that I was going for and it also teaches a little something about mixing and matching patterns. With the ultra thin vertical striping on both the top and bottom, it created cohesiveness rather than a cluttered appearance. If one of the pieces featured a thicker stripe, it just wouldn’t have worked the same. Pulling from the same color family of shades of blue also made this an ideal pairing.

I had a bit of difficulty choosing shoes for this look but ended up going with my Vince Camuto snakeskin heeled boots. I originally had on a shorter heel but with the breezy pants on my shorter frame, I needed the extra height. These boots added a unique pop to the look without going overboard. Again, had the pinstripe on the pants not been so paper thin, the snakeskin pattern wouldn’t have worked. Happily, that wasn’t the case and because this OOTD featured almost all neutral colors, the rich brown snakeskin pattern was a winner.

For accessories, I decided to keep things simple and added my medium sized forest green hoop earrings by Argentino Vivo. I love all shades of green and thought that these complimented my hair and the rest of the outfit so well. These earrings provided movement when I was wearing my grandma’s gorgeous hat and also gave me an extra non-neutral color once I took my handmade scarf off.

Our date day started out with cooler temps and I knew just what I wanted to wear: My Lucky Brand topper jacket. This is one of my favorite pieces in my wardrobe – it is so pretty AND soft! It also helped add to the vintage inspo because of its classic shape. And, of course, no fall outfit would be complete without some mustard yellow, which my scarf had in spades! It is beautiful and knitted with love. After our first round of pictures, I got warmed up enough to take the jacket and scarf off. It all went together exactly how I wanted it, though, and I got compliments on my outfit the entire time at the pumpkin patch!

This outfit was an absolute blast to style and shoot. It took me out of my comfort zone and I loved it. I can’t wait to figure out what to wear next weekend!

What is your fall style like? Where do you get OOTD inspiration from? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah
