Can Interior Style Ever Be Practical? Let’s Find Out!

If you’re an avid fashionista, you’ll know the conundrum of balancing style and practicality all too well. Should you wear a midi dress or baby blue jeans with pockets? Looking good is often achieved by making practical sacrifices. The home is in the same boat. A cool, sleek, black leather corner sofa isn’t very comfortable in the summer or winter. It’s either too hot and sticky or cold and rigid. That leaves it impractical for half the year. ‘Just cover it with a throw’ you might say. Well, that would defeat the purpose of the leather sofa, which is to be seen. It’s a style statement and it would stop being so if you ‘modified’ it. So, the question that begs for a clear answer is, can style ever be practical in the home?

Display versus the dresser:

One of the greatest traditional and modern style statements for any home is the display cabinet. It’s used to display photographs, your expensive china, artistic crystal fruit bowls, trophies of sporting achievement and academic awards. The display cabinet is housed in fine glass doors, so the light in the room entering inside is not impeded in any way. As you can imagine, you’re not going to be placing your everyday household items in such a decor piece. This renders it, practically useless. However, there is a similar alternative; the dresser cabinet.

The dresser cabinet is not like the dresser in your bedroom. It’s not built to just waist-height, indeed it is a large wooden and glass cabinet. The dresser cabinet is used to store your dinner plates, spoons, knives and forks. However, it can also be used to store books, acting as a mini-library. If you get a three-column cabinet, it will be far more dexterous to your needs. Store your tea set, with tray, kettle and cups in the same port. Small plants or flowers may also be placed on the shelves. Fitting a wine rack in the lower levels would be a superb vintage stylistic choice. Of course, you can opt for shopping in a store for new cabinetry, but you could really take your decor up a notch with a custom built piece. Companies like Eleven Oaks can provide you with gorgeous cabinets tailor made to fit your space and style.

Classic Americana:

Some say that America doesn’t really have its own decor style. They’re wrong because the classic America or ‘colonial’ style, is very much still alive. The Patriot window style from Advanced Window Products is a clear example of how chic and debonair window frames can be. It’s a slider style that fits into a strong large square frame. The sliding window adds a double depth layer so you have privacy but practical means of opening the window.

They’re also more energy-efficient as windows are within a thicker frame which does a better job at trapping heat. These types of windows are largely bought in bulk because you need the exterior windows to all match. They have a replacement payment, no payment, and no interest scheme for 24 months and $1,200 off the whole cost if you’re buying 10 or more. The vinyl windows they fit last up to 40 years, so it’s really a long-term investment that should be given serious thought.

Not-so-humble shoe rack:

Do you open your pantry door to fetch your shoes? Some people are of the opinion that hiding your shoes away is polite to guests and that a home that has an open-air for shoes is less hygienic. Both of these views are true but in the end, when deciding on a style, they are subjective. It’s not practical to hide your shoes away because whenever you’re in a rush, you will find your shoes buried under other shoes, coats, and god knows what else. Explore the different possibilities of stylish shoe racks. This humble piece of furniture can be given a truly contemporary feel, and you’ll want to display your shoes more than ever. A pyramid show rack would go well in a geometric art-deco home. A closet shoe rack would be brilliant for a more modern home with sleek lines and smart storage spaces.

Light your mood:

Mood lighting has suddenly jumped in the number of searches made in Google. Purple and pink are often touted as relaxing shades that any home would do well to have. However, you need a table lamp which can be changed to whatever kind of color you want. That’s where something like the Teckin LED table really makes a subtle yet awesome impact. With just a touch of your finger, it can light to the color you want, stopping on the shade you want during its rainbow display.

Use the tips above to add a touch of practical style to your place!

Looking On The Bright Side

Looking On The Bright Side

Hi! While things are so uncertain and the best course of action is to just stay home to help combat the coronavirus, it’s easy to feel down in the dumps. There’s nowhere to go, there’s nothing to do, and cabin fever could definitely be kicking in. And what’s more? The internet is filled with people telling their newsfeed to just get over it, making it difficult to decipher how to feel at all.

Well, I’m here to tell you that it is absolutely okay to not know how to feel considering we’ve literally never experienced anything like this before. It’s also okay to be disappointed about all of the events or occasions that have been cancelled due to the current state. I know I am and I have found that once I acknowledged that I was upset and allowed to be, I felt a whole lot better.

I know it sounds tacky and a bit too simple but, sometimes, the only thing that can make you feel better is looking on the bright side. So tip your cap in acknowledgement to your upsets and remember the following:

There is safety in being at home:

When you’re bored out of your gourd at home, remember that you are safe and that is a blessing. And, I know you are all sick of hearing that it’s time to learn something new… But try learning something new! Noticing little improvements every day you practice a new skill will make for some excitement and you’ll come out of this situation being able to do something you haven’t before. All of this from the safety of your home? Score!

There are things to look forward to:

I work with people with special needs and a lot of my clients are having a hard time understanding why I can’t take them out in the community anymore. So, I told all of them to come up with a special activity that we can do together once things open up again. Whether that be a favorite restaurant or going to the flea market, I wanted each of them to have something to look forward to as the days at home progress.

All of you can do this too! Come up with a perfect day out. Whether you spend it alone, with friends and family, or with a significant other make sure it’s something that you can think about and be excited for. That’s the most important part.

There are options:

Although none of the social distancing methods are as good as the real thing of sitting down next to a friend and having a chat – there are still options. Have a virtual drink over video chat with your friends. Talk to your neighbors from your porch. Visit your friend’s village on Animal Crossing. Yes, they are not the best options but they are there and are worth taking advantage of if you’re missing social contact.

And remember:

Most importantly, don’t stress yourself out about feeling like there’s nothing to do because we’re all in the same boat. There is nothing wrong with treating yourself to another Netflix bingeathon or a take out meal because we should be indulging in little things that make us feel good right now. Just remember to look on the bright side and all will be well. 🙂

What do you do to improve your mood during this crazy time? How do you look on the bright side? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Are Your Drains Healthy? Here Are The Signs They’re Not!

Are Your Drains Healthy? Here Are The Signs They’re Not!

If there is one thing that can cause upset for your property, it’s drain issues. There are a lot of jobs around the house that you can do yourself, from fixing a busted fuse to changing a light bulb. However, there are just some jobs that require a little help from the professionals.

Plumbing and drain issues are some of the worst for a house. They cause a level of disruption that you can’t fathom until it happens to you! It’s hard enough to figure out what the problem might be, but fixing it? That’s a whole other ball game! If you need sewer line repair, you need to call the professionals. If you need to replace the drains, that’s another job you can’t do alone.

So, you need to know the signs of the drains being unhealthy, and we’ve got a list of the most common signs for you below:

Stinky Pipes:

Everyone notices the smell of a dead drain. The food rot, the rotting plants – they don’t smell great! Dirty water that stagnates has a foul odor, and you will notice it right away. The worst thing is that the smell will make its way through the house – not what you want! This is where you want to have your drains snaked and thoroughly cleaned by an expert right away. You can click now to schedule an appointment with a drain engineer for some advice or professional help if you feel that one of drains needs it. It’s also so important to dispose of the grease and fat from your pans properly. Don’t throw old grease down the drain – it’ll stink!

Slow Toilet Drainage:

We’ve all been there at least once: we flush the toilet, and we watch the water rise up before it drains. Except for this time, the water level isn’t changing, and nothing is flushing…oops! The worst is when this happens in someone else’s house! However, a plunger should work here, and that will help the waste to drain correctly. If you’re still having issues, then that’s when you call your Plumber!

Gurgling Drains:

Your drains should never be singing to you. Pipes and fixtures are designed to be silent, so you need to think about what could be causing the bubbles. Dirt and grease build-up is one reason, but you really need the water to drain down slowly. Clean drains don’t speak, and you need to ask the professionals at Ansell Drainage (or a similar company in your local area) to use a long wire to let go of all the built-up muck.

Dreadful Damp:

A drain or pipe that has collapsed or cracked can cause damp within your property. The damage that the drain causes will disrupt the flowing water, causing damp in the walls of the home. So, you need to avoid penetrating wet rot and learn to spot the damp signs in the house. When you notice it, try to figure out the source of the wet and call in the professionals to help. The last thing that you want is to deal with substantial damp patches all over the house.

Drains are supposed to be quiet, clean, and smell nice. If yours are playing up, call in the right professionals, and don’t wait around!

3 Things To Check Before Selling Your Home

3 Things To Check Before Selling Your Home

It’s time to move on, and you want to find somewhere new to live. Obviously, there are lots of different elements of selling a home, and plenty of things to think about. Perhaps one of the most pressing questions is weighing on your mind – how can I sell my house quickly? Preparation, renovation, and maintenance is the key as it can make your property more appealing to potential buyers. Let’s not waste time looking at the obvious things and instead turn your attention to some of the more hidden elements of your home that need checking presale. It really can make a difference! Here are a few things you should definitely spend some extra time looking at and preparing before selling your house:

Furnace:

Every home has a furnace, but how old is yours? If it’s over ten years old – which it might be, then it’s no longer working at peak efficiency. In fact, it will probably only be working at 60%, meaning you lose 40% of the energy created. Do you think this is an attractive prospect for buyers? Here’s a hint, it’s not! So, you may need to find a furnace repair service to touch this bad boy up before you sell your home. It’ll mean you can list your house for a higher value, and you will also have fewer complaints from any prospective buyers.

Windows:

Okay, you’re not technically looking at the windows themselves, but more the sealant around the edges of your windows. This can peel away over time and look quite bad. It also likely leads to drafts of air coming through, which is not good for the energy efficiency of your home. If a viewer sees your nasty window sealant, then they may be put off. Or, they will hit you with a low bid as they argue they’ll probably need to replace the windows. You can avoid this by replacing the sealant to give your windows a more modern look. There’s nothing for buyers to worry about and you make your home look more appealing.

Grout:

For those that don’t know, grout is the little space between tiles. Why does this need checking? One word; mold. Grout is very prone to turning horrible and black with mold. This usually only happens in wall tiles in your bathroom or kitchen. Water can be trapped and absorbed into the grout, which then leads to mold formations. It’s incredibly off-putting and will lower the value of your home if people see it. So, before selling your house, make sure you check the grout between your tiles and clean them if required. Hopefully, you don’t need to do anything as cleaning mold from grout is a tough task.

You should already be carrying out lots of different checks and preparations throughout your home. The three things on this list are things that a lot of you probably wouldn’t think about checking. So, consider them secret ways to boost your sale price! Unless your home is either relatively new or in phenomenal condition, you’ll likely see issues with these things and need to fix them before selling.

Selling Your Space: Services You Need To Find A Buyer Faster

Standard
Selling Your Space: Services You Need To Find A Buyer Faster

There is much money to be made in the real estate industry. Buying from developers and selling to budding homeowners, when done with acute timing, can rake in a multi-million profit. However, this is one of those trades that sounds easier said than done. While it’s a lucrative business for the flipper, people will always be wary about where to spend their hard-earned cash on. Thus, you have to make your property as attractive as possible. How do you close that sale and make millions in a jiffy? Here are some services you can use:

It’s all about the angles:

Showcasing all of the best features of your property requires expertise. Make sure to hire both a professional photographer and an expert photo-editing company so that the ending photos look exquisite.

To make sure all of the shots present spick and span angles, clean the property from top to bottom a day before. Remove all clutter from the floor to clearly show open walking spaces. Rearrange furniture so that all rooms seem larger. Every wide shot should include at least half of the room or two adjacent walls and a clear view of the floor to ceiling. Let as much light in by turning on lights and opening windows. Accessorize flat elevated areas like dining tables and nightstands for added dimension.

Spruce up your space:

Once you get inquiries and viewing requests, it’s time to let them see the stylish side of the house. Within the industry, this is called “home staging” or remodeling a real estate property to look its best before being sold. It requires renovating the room without installing permanent or personal furnishings. For this, you might need a professional interior designer or an expert carpenter to do the job for you.

Create a theme for your home and find pieces and colors that adhere to the theme. This includes repainting the house and renovating significant and noticeable furnishings such as lighting fixtures, flooring, kitchen kits, bed components, bathroom vanities, and the like.

De-personalize the space. Remove rugs or carpets from your floor and keep all storage spaces bare.

Get your ears on the ground:

Sometimes, an expert set of eyes and ears is what you need to sell your home quicker. Make sure to scrutinize your potential agent’s background. As you take them around the property for sale, ask about their training, their license or certification, and how many years of experience they have had in selling homes. Ask about the last property they sold – how quick they did it and to whom they sold it to. Request a marketing plan and a comparable market analysis of your property to determine how best to sell it.

Don’t be afraid to assess multiple agents. This is so you can either test their listing prices or compare their proposed commissions.

Get more mileage with social media:

In this day and age, your potential client will probably see your property off social media. Thus, leverage your digital platforms.

If you’re clueless about the best practices, you can ask a seasoned social media manager for help. They can set up your own Facebook page, blog, or even a whole website and build a marketing strategy to drive organic traffic to these sites. Shoot a video tour and post it on YouTube or share it through every possible channel.

You can also join online marketplaces, niche groups, and online real estate listings to give your property more mileage.

Don’t work hard by doing all of this yourself; work smart and know the right kind of help you need. Do these things correctly, and you’re on your way to making money off of your property!

Creating A Business From Home

Creating A Business From Home

Being able to create a business from home is something we’d all probably aspire to do if we had the opportunity. However, it’s more possible now than ever to create a business from scratch and run it from your own home. You just need to have the knowledge and drive to be able to do it. Here are some tips if you want to do just that:

Have An Investment Budget:

An investment budget is something any business will need to some degree, even if you’re going to be working from home. When you’re creating a business from scratch, there are certain things that are going to need to be paid for. From the furniture and equipment you’ll need to access the internet and to do your communications to the stock you’ll need to create in order to package and send out products that you might be selling online.

There’s a lot to think about, regardless of what you do as a business, so the best place to start is to create an investment budget. Start with what you need in terms of a ballpark figure and then begin saving to achieve that amount.

Create Your Business Plan:

When creating a business plan, you want to make sure that everything has been thought of because it all matters in making sure you have everything laid out in preparation for your business to begin. Think of any objectives and goals you’d like to achieve over the first quarter of your business and don’t be afraid to set some long-term goals because everyone who starts a business has hopes of it lasting for more than just a few months. It’ll hopefully also give you the motivation you need to push through the hard times that you might endure.

As you create your business plan, think of what is important to its structure to maximize success. This includes outweighing the pros and cons of different options like exploring some disadvantages of structuring your business as an S corp or if you want to incorporate work from home hours to your model. The business plan is your roadmap to a thriving business so create it carefully.

Start Seeking Out Suppliers:

Depending on your business, you might have items that you wish to sell, and so it’s good to look into suppliers that are suitable for what you’re after. Whether it’s tumblers in bulk that you’re after or a wholesale provider who can offer clothing that you might be planning on printing on. There are lots of places out there to take advantage of so think about all of the different options that are available before making a selection.

Prepare To Work Hard:

It’s important to know that it’s going to be a lot of hard work that goes into running your own business. Some days will go great, some days will be bad, and others will be worse. It’s important to take the highs with the lows and to enjoy the experiences and challenges that come with owning a business from home.

When creating a business, it’s not something that’s easy, otherwise, everyone would be doing it. Stay focused, believe in yourself, trust your instincts, and work hard.

Goodwill Amazing WTF Find

Standard
Goodwill Amazing WTF Find

Hello! One of my clients absolutely loves old school VHS movies and we end up frequenting one Goodwill or another weekly. From clothing to decor for my apartment, I usually end up finding a little something for myself or my boyfriend during these shopping trips, too. Thrifting is like a modern day treasure hunt and, I think I hit the mother load this past week, if I do say so myself. Lol, check it out:

FC6DC31D-24B1-4B35-90F8-76D4181447E42FD2DCA8-7256-4D5E-80B5-B3A9AD9D8AE3

While my friend browsed her preferred movie section, I perused through the records and ended up walking towards the wall art. I didn’t really plan on looking through it because I still have quite a few pictures that still need hung up in my apartment. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I just happened to see Dr. Evil from the Austin Powers franchise and said “Wait… what?”

Upon taking a closer look, I happened to see that the poster of Austin Powers In Goldmember was signed by Mike Myers, Seth Green, and Verne Troyer offering his “best wishes”. It was in that moment that I realized I had hit the jackpot. Goldmember just so happens to be my personal and my family’s favorite Austin Powers movie and I just knew everyone would be as excited about it as I was…

AND THEY WERE!!!

For four dollars, I purchased the most randomly wonderful come up I’ve ever had in my life. The entire time I was thinking “wtf?” to myself because no one in their right mind would be giving something so fantastic away. But, hey, one man’s trash and whatever.

I, for one, am THRILLED with this Goodwill find and it is definitely the best thing I’ve come across yet. You would have to pry this poster out of my cold dead hands so, although I can’t comprehend dropping something like this off at the local Goodwill, I am so glad someone did! 😀

Do you have any celebrity autographs? What has been your favorite “wtf” thrifting find? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Lil Red’s Art Gallery: Accent Wall Edition

Lil Red’s Art Gallery: Accent Wall Edition

Hi! Ever since moving into my apartment this past year, I have wanted to do something with the wall alongside my staircase. I pictured a wonderful accent wall with artwork of all different shapes and sizes and decided to go for it… Several months later! Haha, when I first moved in, I bought tons of framed art pieces from Goodwill and a few other locations and they have since been laying in a pile underneath my staircase.

Whomp whomp.

But, thanks to a new record player in my apartment from my boyfriend (which all of you will see later), the under the stairs space needed cleared and it was about damn time to get some of those pictures hung. So, Johnny and I went to Walmart, purchased some Command strips, and I spent some of an afternoon off creating the following:

wallwall1

I am so pleased with how my art wall is starting to take form and there is still much work to be done because those aren’t all of the pictures that I have. However, I am not so pleased with the holding power of the Command strips because the embroidered peacock beneath my “Welcome” sign fell within one hour of hanging it.

And, to make matters worse, simply tapping my Welcome sign when trying to rehang the embroidery made that one fall, too! I was able to get that picture rehung but, sadly, the Command strips were already so worn out on the embroidery that I had to put it back in its nook under the stairs with a broken frame, no less.

Despite how happy I am with the outcome so far, I don’t think I would use the Command strips again to hang the rest of my pictures. I am also pretty nervous for the ones on the wall to fall and cause even more damage! We’ll see how the remaining pieces fair and if they can hold on for longer than a day but, I think I’ll be using the old fashioned way of a hammer and nails in the future. BOOOO.

Do you have an accent wall in your home? What is it like? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Combining Your Indoor And Outdoor Space Cohesively

Standard
Combining Your Indoor And Outdoor Space Cohesively

Indoor-outdoor spaces have become much more popular in recent years. Homeowners have stopped seeing their interiors and exteriors as separate realms and now want to meld them together in a way that creates a sense of harmony.

Achieving this, however, is a little more complicated than you might think. It’s not just a matter of getting some sliding doors and removing the ledge (although that helps). You also have to consider a host of additional factors, many of which aren’t immediately apparent.

So what are the tricks for successfully linking your indoor and outdoor spaces in a way that makes sense? Read on to find out!

Keep The Same Flooring Inside And Out:

If you look at photographs of the homes that most successfully link their indoor and outdoor spaces, you immediately notice something – the flooring is the same. Choosing to use the same floors inside and out creates a sense of continuity that you don’t get if you have different options inside and outside the house. Ideally, you want the wall separating the two spaces to feel more like an optional screen than a barrier.

Add A Canopy:

When people think of outdoor spaces, they don’t necessarily mean areas where they go to expose themselves to wind and rain. Most of the time, they want somewhere that they can enjoy the outdoors but without any of the downsides.

Here is where a patio cover company can help. You can get a roof that keeps the sun and rain off of your head but, at the same time, allows you to feel more like a part of your outdoor space. After all, there’s no point letting your garden go to waste.

Get Rid Of The Wall:

Walls are barriers that separate your indoor and outdoor spaces irrevocably. When there’s a load of masonry in the way, no amount of matching flooring or canopies will bridge the gulf. Fortunately, while getting rid of the wall might sound like an extreme measure, it is actually quite achievable with modern approaches available today.

A lot of homeowners opt for bi-folding doors. These are doors that have several hinges and fold up against themselves as they fold away. When completely drawn, there is an ample space which connects the interior to the exterior, making the transition more seamless.

Of course, custom bi-folding doors connected to a steel surround are expensive, so you could choose French doors too. This latter style, installed with the help of a company specializing in Aluminium Door Installations, offers you an option that is more energy efficient but doesn’t sacrifice the style that you want to achieve. The trick here, though, is to raise your patio so that it is the same height as your interior floor AND get rid of any lip or threshold at the bottom of the door. When everything is the same height, it makes more visual sense and helps to bring the interior and exterior of your home together.

Design The Spaces As One:

When it comes to indoor-outdoor spaces, you want to banish the idea that they are separate right from the design phase. Creating a complex that spans both the interior and exterior of your home creates a mindset that allows you to generate greater integration automatically. When you use this method, the outcome is far more harmonious. Like in this Pixabay picture:

Home Alarm Security Options

Standard
Home Alarm Security Options

Home security is of huge importance today. Below, we are going to take a look at some effective home security suggestions to keep you and yours safe:

Monitored burglar alarms:

A monitored burglar alarm is one of the most effective security methods available from alarm companies today. You can have complete peace of mind that your home is protected at all times, no matter if you are away on holiday or you simply spend a lot of time out of the house on a day-to-day basis.

What is a monitored alarm?

Monitored alarm systems provide communication between your home security system and a central monitoring system. So, if your control panel acknowledges a security breach, it will send a signal to a central monitoring station. There are also police monitored alarm systems, which connect your home security system to the police. With most police monitored alarms, if there is more than one emergency signal registered within less than half an hour, the police will be notified.

Another option to consider is a SMART monitored home alarm. These alarms are connected to your devices, such as your mobile phone or tablet. This means that you will be immediately alerted if there is a breach. When you are doing your research for a new alarm, it is so important to choose a service that provides you with round the clock care 24/7 and 365 days a year. You can have peace of mind with products like the Verisure Smart Alarms for starters or other home security businesses in your area.

Why choose a monitored alarm?

A monitored alarm can give you full reassurance that your property is protected. No matter where in the world you are, someone will be on the scene to ensure any issues are dealt with. Not only this, but monitored alarms can easily be integrated with other security systems, including CCTV and door entry access.

Bells only burglar alarm:

An audible alarm system is one that makes a noise when it is activated. So, if someone unauthorized tries to access your home, a loud noise will sound. This will ensure someone comes to the scene immediately while also warning any criminals off. No one is going to proceed to burgle your home once a loud alarm sounds! This system is well suited to those who live in a busy area where neighbors will hear the alarm. If you live in a remote location out in the countryside, you’d be better off with a different type of alarm.

Why choose a bells only burglar alarm?

  • Excellent burglary deterrent: A bells only alarm can stop your house from being targeted by criminals. Most burglaries are opportunistic, so the mere presence of an alarm can do enough to scare the criminals away.
  • Cost efficiency: A bells only alarm is the most cost-efficient home security method available on the market today. You can have complete peace of mind without needing to spend a lot of money.
  • Peace of mind: Relax in and out of your home, knowing it is secure.

Wired vs. wireless:

One of the important decisions to make when choosing between home burglar alarm systems is whether to go for a wired or wireless alarm. Both have their advantages. Wireless systems are faster and much less disruptive, but the battery will need to be changed regularly.

Use the tips above to keep your home and family well protected today and in the future.
