Lil Red’s Book Club: The It Girl By Ruth Ware Edition

Hello everyone! We interrupt your regularly scheduled bonus pictures from my Pumpkin Patch Party OOTD with a brand new edition of Lil Red’s Book Club. Today, without giving any spoilers away, we will be discussing a thriller by Ruth Ware called The It Girl. To be frank, I have never been overly impressed with Ware’s books but this one was very good. In fact, it’s my favorite book that she has written. Before we begin, I will be placing a trigger warning on The It Girl for violence and disturbing content. Now, let’s get to it:

image_67231745(1)

Hannah Jones appears to have it all. A husband, Will, who she has loved since first sight, a baby on the way, and the charming life of a couple in their late twenties. Could she have said the same for herself a decade ago? Not at all. Ten years ago, her roommate, April, at the prestigious Pelham College at Oxford was brutally murdered. Despite her seemingly picture perfect life, Hannah struggles with this on a daily basis. She did not have a role in April’s death but she played a big part in the trial.

During her time at Pelham, Hannah was joined at the hip with the gorgeous, effervescent April. April was, indeed, an It Girl and everyone knew about her beauty and wealth. Their friend circle of Will, Hugh, Ryan, and Emily seemed to revolve solely around April but her and Hannah shared a bond that only roommates could have. Hannah felt completely at home in her new life at Pelham except for one major issue… John Neville.

Neville was a porter at Pelham and he seemed to have it out for Hannah from the jump. Hannah was uncomfortable walking alone and would plan her routes to avoid John but he seemed to be everywhere. He was also the last person to see April alive and is what sealed his conviction for her death due to Hannah’s testimony. There have always been whispers that Neville was innocent. However, his recent death in prison means he will never see justice and the case is blown back open. If Neville is innocent, then April’s killer is still on the loose ten years later.

After Hannah talks to a journalist who claims to have new information on the case, she begins to doubt her story even more than she already did. Now, it is up to her to put the pieces together and find out what really happened the night of April’s death. If Neville is out of the picture, everyone is now a suspect. Her old friends, teachers, and even her own husband. Will Hannah solve the case of April’s killer? Read The It Girl to find out!

While I have enjoyed previous Ruth Ware books before, I have never felt too excited when she has a new book out. In comparison to other thrillers, her novels always seem to fall just a bit short. Needless to say, I was incredibly surprised with how invested I was in The It Girl right from the start. It was completely unputdownable and I couldn’t wait for free time so that I could read more!

The It Girl featured one of my favorite things of going back and forth between Hannah’s past at Pelham College to present day. This allowed you to get to know the main suspects in their youth and in current times. It also made it very difficult to pinpoint the killer because all of these players were incredibly likeable despite the usual flaws of first year college students. And, any tension in present times from them felt understandable after ten years of trying to get April’s death out of their minds. Every lead felt like a Red Herring and it made you relate to Hannah even more as she continued to second guess everything she thought she knew.

I loved Hannah as a main character and I thought that she was really brave. Her pregnancy also heightened the suspense because her sleuthing could turn dangerous at any moment. It was so easy to sympathize with her after all that she had been through. I definitely spent the whole book rooting for her to have the life she always wanted.

My advice if you read this book and you like to try and figure out the grand reveal ahead of time is to go with your gut. Like Hannah, I second guessed and then vetoed one of my initial instincts and I ended up being right on the money. It’s also very important to pay close attention to everything said and done at Pelham because it will all come back soon enough!

I am going to award The It Girl with a seven and a half star rating. I was originally going to give it an eight but I realized that that was only because I liked it better than other Ruth Ware novels. Was this the most groundbreaking thing that I have ever read? No. But, it was a fun read and it put Ware back on the map for me after years of feeling wishy washy. I think you all will like it too!

What are you currently reading? What should I read next? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

How To Get Better Prepared In Your Life

How To Get Better Prepared In Your Life

If you are worried that life is getting out of hand and you need to find ways to keep calm and carry on, then look no further. The article below will give you some tips and tricks on how to be more prepared in life. This will help it to seem less chaotic and help you manage all of the twists and turns better:

Sort Your Finances:

One thing you can do to help you prepare in life is having your finances in order. If you don’t know what is going on with your finances, then you could be spending more than you have coming in. One way you can sort this out is by setting a budget, which will combine everything and leave you with a rounded figure of money you have left after spending. To work out your budget, you will need to figure out all of your incomings and outgoings first.

When it comes to budgeting, no one is saying you can’t splurge on a shopping trip or take a lovely vacation. However, it’s about making smart decisions with your finances. Handle all of your important purchases first and foremost like rent, utilities, and bills. Put aside money for future planning like using the services of a life insurance lawyer if your claim ever gets denied, which can affect your finances, or funding towards college. Should you be the beneficiary of a life insurance policy, it is a wise idea to look for a lawyer who specializes in life insurance ahead of time. If something goes wrong with your claim you will be able to get the process started immediately with the life insurance claims lawyer you chose.

And don’t forget to save money for fun too like a night at the movies or a dinner with friends. Make best friends with your budget and keep it at the front of your mind whenever you swipe that credit card.

Invest In A Wall Planner:

Next, you should think about investing in a wall planner. One of the major problems with preparing for the future is that your schedule could be completely out of whack. It’s possible that things happen which you either miss or forget about until it’s too late. This could include appointments or deadlines that are crucial for your professional and personal development. Sites such as Daily Orders have a fantastic selection of planners for you to choose from.

Have The Right Insurance:

Insurance is like an umbrella. You won’t always need one, but you’ll be glad you have it when it starts to pour down. There are lots of different types of insurance that you can explore which can benefit various aspects of your life from life insurance to disability coverage. Selecting the right one will give you peace of mind when difficult situations arise. It is also a good idea to have legal professionals that specialize in insurance in mind should you need them. For example, a well reviewed Life Insurance Interpleader Attorney can determine the rightful benefactor of a life insurance policy if multiple claims are involved. Having an attorney already selected will save you precious time if you have a need for one.

Remember that you want your insurance policies to be as specifically tailored to you as possible. That way, you are getting the coverage that will be most beneficial to you. For example, did you know that there is Life Insurance for marijuana users and those in the marijuana industry? Although a lot of states have legalized marijuana, the federal government still has a slow approach which can make finding insurance difficult. Be forthright with the professionals handling your policy so you will never be without protection.

Find Things You Enjoy Doing:

If you do a lot during the day and have people you look after at home, then you may be due for a break. It is important not to feel guilty when you take time for yourself because everyone needs this in their life. Go and meet some friends for lunch, dedicate an afternoon to your favorite hobby, or hit the gym. Life seems much brighter when you make time for things you enjoy.

Know Your Life Goals:

Finally, you need to think about your life goals and what you want to achieve. If you don’t have a point that you are working towards, then it’s difficult, if not impossible to know whether you are making any type of progress. That’s why you should think about what you want from your life right now and in the future. Ideally, you should have goals that are related to everything from your personal life to professional development.

By taking the right steps to be better prepared, you can guarantee that life doesn’t end up catching you off guard!

Lil Red’s Book Club: Fire-Starter By Stephen King Edition

Hello everyone and welcome to a brand new edition of Lil Red’s Book Club! I have been visiting my own personal library and after rereading Stephen King’s Carrie for the first time since freshman year of high school, I thought that I would give Fire-Starter a try. I have never read it before and it was AMAZING and such a fun reminder of King’s greatness. From start to finish, I was hooked and I can’t wait to watch the movie of it soon. Before we begin our discussion, I will be placing a trigger warning on Fire-Starter for gruesome violence and disturbing content. Now, let’s get to it – without giving any spoilers away, of course!

image_67176449(1)

Young Andy McGee is strapped for cash in college and decides to take part in an experiment for a quick two hundred bucks. In this experiment, some students would be injected with a hallucinogenic drug and others would get a placebo. It sounded easy enough and eleven other students thought so too, including Vicky, whom Andy would eventually marry and have a little girl with.

During the experiment, strange and violent things happened but the facilitators claimed that it was just the effects of the drugs causing these visions. Still, Andy can remember vividly when a drugged student clawed his own eyes out and others were being encouraged to move items with their minds. Apparently, this drug was thought to awaken certain mental abilities like telekinesis, levitation, pyrokinesis, and mental domination.

Because of the deaths of two students during the experiment, it was immediately shut down and covered up. Fast forward to present day and Andy and Vicky are the only two remaining from the original group. The happy couple is perfectly ordinary aside from a few quirks. Vicky can occasionally open the refrigerator door from across the room. Meanwhile, Andy can use his mental domination to “push” people into anything from losing weight to having more self confidence. Their daughter, however, is a different story.

Little Charlie McGee has the power of pyrokinesis – the ability to make and control fires with her mind. You can imagine the scares she gave her parents when she was a baby! Despite their powers that they inherited for a measly two hundred in college, the McGees live a fulfilling and normal life. They also have no idea that they have been watched and followed since the experiment ended and that an allusive group called “The Shop” is very much interested in Andy and Charlie.

After Andy has a hunch of something bad happening at his work as a college professor, he rushes home to find his wife dead and Charlie missing. He learns that his daughter was taken from a friend’s home and time is of the essence before The Shop has her for forever. He uses his power of the push to locate her and they have been on the run from Charlie’s captors ever since.

The Shop believes that Andy and Charlie are incredibly dangerous and could also be very useful for their own personal gain. They will not stop hunting father and daughter until they have them locked up at their compound. And, once they have Andy and Charlie, there is no telling what will happen to them next. How long can the McGees evade The Shop’s clutches? What’s going to happen when they’re caught? Read Fire-Starter to find out!

I am so freaking obsessed with Fire-Starter and cannot believe that I haven’t read it before. From beginning to end, the tension in this book was so high because Andy and Charlie are so easy to root for. Andy is such a doting father and Charlie is just sweet as can be. However, it wouldn’t be a Stephen King book if they were on the run for forever. They had to get caught eventually but you didn’t know when and it made the book simply unputdownable.

Fire-Starter went back and forth from past and present and shifted narrators every couple of chapters. You all know how much I love that in a book so that was a huge plus. It was also interesting to know what Charlie and Andy were doing and what The Shop was planning to do about it in tandem. There were so many times when this read lulled me into a false sense of security and I would hope that The Shop would slip up. Then, something major would happen and it was heartbreaking. Trust and believe, my jaw dropped like five hundred times throughout the book!

Fire-Starter was such an easy, enjoyable read and it was a fresh take on what horror is because it’s not always things that go bump in the night. Sometimes, it’s people who are horrifying. Stephen King really embraced that in Fire-Starter and further solidifies him as King Of Horror in my mind. Like Carrie, I will be awarding Fire-Starter with the coveted ten out of ten stars and I cannot recommend it enough. It’s a perfect spooky season read!

6 Ways To Improve Your Self-Discipline

6 Ways To Improve Your Self-Discipline

If you feel like your life hasn’t been going as well as it could, hen you might need to find some stability and discipline in your life. Here are some of the best ways to start making these improvements for a more fulfilling life:

Dedicate Yourself to a Team-Based Hobby:

Hobbies are an excellent way to get away from the stress of life. Although they won’t get rid of them, you can at least find some enjoyment and forget about your worries for a while. Anything that brings you joy is the best thing to do. Perhaps you love to paint, play video games, or play an instrument. But for more social balance and discipline, a team-based hobby helps you find stability. Working in a team, such as taking ballet classes or volleyball, you feel more responsibility because all members are required to perform well.

Find a Job You Enjoy:

Feeling fulfilled in one’s job and taking pride in accomplishments affects productivity and efficiency. You are more creative and resourceful when you love what you do. As a result, you will improve your overall well-being by increasing hormones such as serotonin and dopamine. Additionally, you will feel that you have worth at your job and are appreciated. This makes you work harder and more likely to go for promotions. Promotions and work enjoyment open more doors to more money and a balanced life.

Join a Gym:

Incorporating a work out or two during your weekly routine can do wonders for your physical and mental health. It’s great to fill your schedule with meaningful things and joining a gym is the perfect place to start. You can take classes, swim, work out on your own, or hire a trainer. All of this can help you achieve a high level of fitness and it’s exciting to see and feel your improvements. You also might meet some new friends!

Cut Back What You Can:

If you are relying on alcohol to help you relax and have fun, it can end up making you feel worse. Cutting back on this will greatly improve your mindset. Should you need extra help, seek therapy or a rehab facility. If you think this is something you can work on by yourself, you might want to research something like the California sober lifestyle. This lifestyle choice involves eliminating alcohol while allowing yourself to indulge in cannabis instead. Whatever you choose, be firm in your decision and be around people who support and encourage the choices you make.

Improve Your Work/Life Balance:

Finding a happy medium between work and personal life is crucial to your general well-being. Keeping a healthy work-life balance is essential for avoiding burnout and reducing stress at work. One of the most common health problems in the workplace is chronic stress. This causes severe illnesses like heart attacks and depression. Yet over 80% of people feel like they overwork and don’t spend enough time with their families. So, use your vacation days, don’t take work home with you, and always try to make some time for yourself.

Cut Out Toxic People from Your Life:

Sometimes we can be surrounded by people who are wrong for us at a specific point in time. Genuinely toxic people can deplete you emotionally and make you feel small. You may have noticed someone who does you no good. It can be a partner, family member, or so-called friend. Spending time with them drains your vitality rather than replenishes it. As a result, they have a major impact on your identity. They frequently result in feelings of depression and guilt so you must put yourself first by distancing yourself and setting rigid boundaries.

Stability and discipline are vital factors for a productive and happy life. Fill your schedule with activities you enjoy and set achievable goals. Then, watch yourself flourish!

Lil Red’s Book Club: Carrie By Stephen King Edition

Standard
Lil Red’s Book Club: Carrie By Stephen King Edition

Hello everyone and welcome to a brand new edition of Lil Red’s Book Club! With minimal time to go to the library, I have been pulling from mine and Johnny’s book nook for something to read. After finishing In Cold Blood, I decided on Carrie by Stephen King. I haven’t read Carrie since freshman year of high school and it is MESSED. UP. Before our discussion (with no spoilers, of course), I will be placing a trigger warning on it for disturbing content, abuse, and bullying. Now, let’s get to it:

image_67222785

Carrie White is a sad and lonely girl and has been since the day she was born to her religious fanatic mother. Her days consist of being beaten, locked in a closet to pray, and being the butt of everyone’s jokes at school. However, Carrie is special and has a power deep within her that didn’t get unlocked until a particularly nasty incident.

Poor Carrie got her first period in the shower after gym class and thought that she was bleeding to death. Rather than help her, all of the girls in her class began throwing tampons and pads and yelled at her to “plug it up”. In her despair, Carrie made the lights in the bathroom burn out – just by using her mind.

Carrie is, indeed, special and has the power of telekinesis or being able to move objects just by thinking of it. While Carrie spends her time perfecting her craft, other plans are set into motion. Popular Sue Snell feels remorse for the bathroom incident and wants to make things right. So, she asks her boyfriend, Tommy, to take Carrie to the senior prom.

Meanwhile, mean girl Chris is enraged that she has to miss the prom because she skipped out on the detentions given for tormenting Carrie in the bathroom. Chris and Sue have a very different idea of making prom an unforgettable night for Carrie. As Carrie prepares for the prom by making her own dress and watching what she eats, Chris and her boyfriend begin planning the ultimate revenge.

Fast forward to prom night and Carrie shows up on the arm of Tommy Ross. She feels beautiful and is entranced by the magic of the event. People are complimenting her, talking to her, and for once in her life Carrie feels seen. Her and Tommy are even voted prom king and queen. Then, everything goes downhill rapidly.

While standing on stage and accepting their new title of high school royalty, two buckets of pig’s blood are spilled all over Carrie. The metaphorical straw broke the camel’s back and a murderous rampage ensues compliments of Carrie’s special gift. Prom night was unforgettable. Will anyone make it out alive? Read Carrie to find out!

My husband and I are huge fans of Stephen King and rereading Carrie after so long is a perfect reminder why. This book is terrifying and, honestly, heartbreaking. It was SO hard to read about the torment that Carrie is subjected to on a daily basis. She is not safe at home or school and is utterly alone in her misery. I couldn’t even imagine.

I often see memes on Facebook of “reading or watching Carrie” with the picture of the mom from Arrested Development saying “good for her”. And to be real, I was rooting for Carrie the entire time, even during the grand finale. It is such a prime example of the hunted becoming the huntress and essentially making the bullies eat their words. So, yes, GOOD FOR HER – especially because it was impossible to root for any of the people who were so awful to her!

I am going to rate Carrie with the coveted ten out of ten stars. If you haven’t read it and are into the horror genre, then I cannot recommend it enough. It is such a great introduction to Stephen King books and is, easily, one of his most powerful novels.

What are you currently reading? What should I read next? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Perfect Gifts For The Writer In Your Life

Perfect Gifts For The Writer In Your Life

If you are trying to think of a gift to buy a writer, there are a few options that might spring to mind. But you probably want to buy them something a little different, especially if they already ‘have it all’ in terms of writing gifts. In this post, we are going to take a look at some of the best gift options you might want to consider when you are looking for something for the writer in your life:

Special Pen:

This is the kind of gift that is always going to go down well with any writer in the world. Most people will appreciate a special pen that they can call their own, but nobody quite as much as a writer. If they haven’t already got a special pen, then this is definitely something you should consider buying them. Make sure that it is a proper fountain pen, one which is going to last a long time and which they can refill with ink as necessary. This will help encourage them to actually use it.

Unique Notebook:

Chances are, your writer already has a lot of notebooks and you are going to need to make sure that you are keeping things a little different. They probably don’t want another Moleskine, and you would be surprised to discover how many they already have that you don’t know about! However, going down a slightly different route might prove useful – such as getting them a notebook which has been personalized just for them, perhaps with a monogram or something similar.

Tickets To A Reading Or Book Launch:

If your writer has a preferred author, then you might want to look out for some event or reading that they have coming up, especially if that author has a book coming out. This is the kind of event that writers tend to love! If nothing else, it can be a kind of date, so that is definitely something to think about if your writer is also your partner. Either way, it’s a gift they will be sure to remember.

Online Writing Course:

Finally, writers are always looking to improve their skills, so they might appreciate being given the chance to do so. It’s a good idea to get them booked into a writing course, but you will need to make sure that you choose one that they are likely to enjoy and get a lot out of. If you can do that right, you will find that they really appreciate it, so it’s definitely something that you can think about. It’s a gift they’ll use every time they write!

The writer on your shopping list will love any of the above – take it from me!

Lil Red’s Book Club: In Cold Blood By Truman Capote Edition

Hello everyone and welcome to a brand new edition of Lil Red’s Book Club! After finishing the Obama Biden Mystery series by Andrew Shaffer, I was completely out of things to read. So, I decided to finally take Johnny’s advice and read In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. He has been telling me for three years to give it a try and after caving, I don’t know why I didn’t listen to him from the start. It. Was. AMAZING!

Without giving any spoilers away, we will be discussing what is thought to be one of the best True Crime books after written. Before we begin, however, I will be placing a big fat trigger warning on In Cold Blood for disturbing content and gruesome violence. Now, let’s get to it:

image_67222017

Holcomb, Kansas is a small rural town where everyone knows everyone. People are generous to their neighbors, attend church, and never lock their doors. The Clutter family is at the center of this community and each member is well liked and respected by all. Mr. and Mrs. Clutter and their children, Kenyon and Nancy, live on a beautiful ranching property and spent their final day without even an inkling of what was going to happen next.

On November 15th, 1959, each member of the Clutter family was murdered in their own home. The slaying was brutal and no one could make sense of it. The assailants left behind almost no clues and the inhabitants of Holcomb couldn’t imagine a crime like this unfolding before them. Especially a crime against the Clutters. After the discovery of the murders, everyone began locking their doors at night.

As the crime scene was examined with a fine toothed comb, fresh from prison Perry Smith and Dick Hickock are patting themselves on the back for a job well done. They executed their plan to perfection and left no witnesses or clues. There was nothing tying them to the Clutter killings so there’s no way they will get caught. Now, they were on their way to Mexico to search for work and live the lives that they always dreamed about behind bars.

With seemingly no information for the detectives to work with and the assailants on the move, it is believed that the Clutter’s murderers will never be brought to justice. However, when a huge break in the case happens, Perry and Dick are officially on the radar. Will they get caught before they can hurt anyone else? Read In Cold Blood to find out!

Let me start off by saying that I found the first seventy or so pages of In Cold Blood to be boring as HELL. There were two things that kept me reading, though, and I am glad for it. 1) Johnny’s promise of “things are about to get crazy” and 2) His copy of the book was purchased at Goodwill and there were notes, highlighted, and underlined sections from the previous owner on every page. I thought that this was really cool and liked seeing what someone else was thinking as they read!

When the pace of In Cold Blood picked up, I was completely absorbed in it and always felt disappointed when I had to put it down. This book was INSANE. It went back and forth between Perry, Dick, and the detectives and I never had any idea what was going to happen next. It was a nail biter because of the cat and mouse chase between the parties. I knew that eventually Perry and Dick would be caught but I never knew when or how.

In Cold Blood made me experience a whirlwind of different emotions. I was enraged by the Clutter family tragedy and rooting for justice to be served. I also felt sympathetic to Perry in a sense but not so much for Dick. Truman Capote’s masterful writing was able to invoke so many diverse feelings and it felt like I was a resident of Holcomb too and waiting on pins and needles for the end result. It was a rollarcoaster ride!

Despite a slow start, I am still going to rate In Cold Blood with the highly coveted ten out of ten stars. The story needed to be set up and I see that. Once all of the Dominoes were in place and tumbling down, it kept me invested for days after finishing the book. I can now understand why people call it “the best”!

What are you currently reading? What should I read next? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Lil Red’s Book Club: Hope Rides Again By Andrew Shaffer Edition

Lil Red’s Book Club: Hope Rides Again By Andrew Shaffer Edition

Hello everyone and welcome to a brand new edition of Lil Red’s Book Club! If you recall from the last book club post, I had read a hilarious bromance mystery novel starring Barack Obama and Joe Biden called Hope Never Dies by Andrew Shaffer. And, today, we will be reviewing the sequel entitled Hope Rides Again – without giving any spoilers away, of course! Let’s get started:

image_67512065(1)

It has been almost a year since Joe Biden and Barack Obama’s whirlwind adventure of solving the mystery of an Amtrak conductor’s murder. Now, the only thing on Joe’s mind is his potential run for president. As per Barack’s invite, Joe ends up at an event in Chicago that his bestie is speaking at so he can rub elbows with people who might endorse him. The schmoozing gets cut short, however, when Barack discovers that his prized Blackberry phone is missing.

The phone is traced to a freight yard and, despite Barack wiping the phone remotely, Joe slips back into amateur detective mode to make sure justice is served. Rather than finding the phone at the freight yard, Joe stumbles onto a crime scene. A young man who is part of Barack’s Rising Stars foundation has been shot and is in critical condition. Who better to solve this mystery than the dream team?

During their investigations, Joe and Barack uncover crooked cops, gang activity, and a stolen shipment container filled with guns. They can trust no one, as law enforcement might be turning a blind eye to the gang responsible. With a young man on death’s door and a huge cache of guns ready to make their way onto the streets, it is up to Joe and Barack to save the day. Can they do it? Read Hope Rides Again to find out!

Guys. I freaking LOVE these books lol. The Obama Biden Mystery series is an absolute riot and Andrew Shaffer is a genius. Although I liked Hope Never Dies better, Hope Rides Again is a solid follow up and is still definitely worth the read. The premise of these books are just so ridiculous. You are not going to get jaw dropping revelations from them but if you are looking to laugh yourself silly, then I can’t recommend the series enough.

Hope Rides Again follows the same format as its predecessor and has Joe as the narrator/Barack’s ride or die. From heartfelt moments between the two, cracks at politicians, and a world to save, the boys are back but not necessarily better than ever. They still end up in life threatening situations even when they think they’re getting a grasp on the whole detective thing!

The sequel is, admittedly, less funny than the first in my opinion – but only slightly. However, as long as Andrew Shaffer keeps cranking out Obama Biden Mysteries, then he will always have me as a customer. Overall, I am going to rate Hope Rides Again with an eight out of ten stars for a strong but not amazing sequel. Here’s to this series becoming a trilogy!

What are you currently reading? What should I read next? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

All In Your Own Backyard

All In Your Own Backyard

Hello!! When I first started working as an Independent Provider for people with special needs, I was mainly on the evening shift for purely social outings with my clients. For free and fun entertainment, we would often hit up the local libraries in the greater Akron area. Activities ranged from vinyl record clubs to art projects and murder mysteries and it was always a blast.

Now, I work in the mornings and afternoons and provide care under the umbrella of daily living skills. It has been a while since I scoured the library and community websites for outings and I, honestly, kind of forgot how amazing all of our local programs are until this summer. My family has certainly been making the most of them!

This past summer, people in my family have attended numerous events including a watercolor painting class and a Comicon style vendor fair. We have also loved taking my sweet niece to story time almost every week at the library. It is the most adorable little hour filled with books, songs, and crafts. My heart just melted when I took Val last week. ❤

Over last weekend, I experienced one of the best community events I have been to in a while with my dad and Val – the Heinz Poll Summer Dance Festival. It was held at the Goodyear Heights Metro Park and featured awesome performances by various dance groups. We got to watch a jazz and ballet troop as well as the dancers from ArtSparks, which is a dance group made up of people with special needs. It was SO cool!

The main event of the night was a performance by Pilobolus, a world famous troop. However, we didn’t get to watch them because it was getting close to Valerie’s bedtime. All of the dancers we did see were spectacular but the best part of the night was when the kids in the audience got to take the stage. Val had a blast learning different ballet and jazz moves. She also unintentionally stole the show when she was showing off her newfound skills during another performance lol it was so funny. 😀

After Val learned some dance steps, she said that she would like to take dance classes and that’s what is so wonderful about all of these community programs. Not only do you get to meet new people but you also get to try your hand at new things for free or close to it. Similarly, my mom and I now paint in our free time after the ten dollar watercolor class we took.

Children, teenagers, and adults alike can all benefit from local programs – you just need to know where to look. Library websites, newspapers, and community pages can all point you in the right direction. If you are searching for new activities with minimal funding, then this is the way to go. Explore your community and have fun!

What community events do you like to attend? Have you learned a new skill or hobby recently? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Bubble Pop Craft

Hello! This past weekend was a whirlwind because my sister just had another beautiful baby girl! I am so excited to be a TT of three and my Val Gal is over the moon to be a big sister. While the little miss was making her grand debut, my dad and I watched Val over the weekend. We had an absolute blast playing outside, going to see a dance program, and making a super fun bubble craft!

When I was little, I could stay outside picking dandelions and blowing bubbles for hours and Val shares the same sentiments. On Sunday morning, it was very dreary so we couldn’t play outside. But, in the recesses of my brain, I remembered a craft that I had seen on Pinterest by Broogly that was sure to keep her occupied. Check it out:

What You’ll Need:

  • Bubble soap
  • Food coloring
  • Paper

What To Do:

  • Mix food coloring and bubble soap together
  • Blow bubbles over your piece of paper to create your pop art. The longer the bubble sits on the paper, the deeper the color will be.

This bubble pop craft was so easy to put together and Val and I spent over an hour and a half making six masterpieces for her baby sis, uncles, and grandma. While this is definitely a better craft for doing outside, we were able to make it work with minimal mess by placing beach towels over the kitchen floor to blow bubbles on. The mess actually came after the project was complete when I accidentally knocked into Val and blue bubble soap spilled all over the floor. WHOOPS lol.

Not only was this craft entertaining but it was educational too. I got to teach Val all about mixing colors to make new ones and she assisted in helping me make purple and orange bubble soap. I loved how her orange turned out! She would tell you that the purple was the best and, as always, it’s her favorite color. ❤

The next time we make this craft (because there will for sure be a next time), hopefully the weather will be nice enough to do it outdoors. I plan on getting bigger sheets of paper and think that it will turn out really cool if we use one of the automatic bubble blowers. Do give this craft a try if you have little ones – they will love it!

Where do you find fun crafts for your kids? What crafts have you made together this summer? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah
