From Hobby To Passion, Finding More Time For What You Love

From Hobby To Passion, Finding More Time For What You Love

Finding your balance in life isn’t always easy. When you feel the scales tipping too hard in one direction, it can feel like you’re stuck in a rut. With the state of modern living, all too often those scales tip too heavily in favor of work and the important responsibilities we all carry. When that happens, it’s time to take a closer look at how you spend your time, and how much you dedicate to your passions.

Recognize the benefits:

First, we have to get rid of the stigma that some of us attach to our hobbies. It is true that in many cases, you don’t get an easily understandable return on your investment. Most people aren’t going to make money off of their passion. However, they are going to enjoy the benefits that can enrich their lives not just personally but professionally. People with hobbies tend to be more productive and more motivated in their work. They can learn plenty of transferable skills that can apply to their careers. Perhaps more importantly, it helps round you out as a person, gives you a broader perspective on life, and gives you the downtime that you need to get away from work every now and then.

Be willing to invest:

If you want the full benefits of finding a passion, whether it’s writing, backpacking, archery, or something entirely different, you have to be willing to give into it. Most passions require some kind of gear or tools that cost money. This could be sports equipment, a laptop, or even EFT Coffee cheat packs for your favorite video games. You can start with basic gear and level up as you continue to explore your hobby more fully. The time it takes to learn the ins-and-outs of any hobby, however, is the biggest investment that you have to make. This means taking a closer look at your schedule and physically penciling in time that you take away from other fields of your life to enjoy your hobby without any distraction. You have to create those boundaries and make a hard rule out of them, otherwise, it’s all too easy to find yourself sacrificing that “me time” for something that isn’t really worth it.

Find others who are into it:

To some people, a little isolation goes a long way in helping them enjoy their passions. Spending time alone in the wilderness or in your own garden can help you get away from the noise of your colleagues or family, which is perfectly fine. But, if you really want to get deeper into a hobby and commit to making it a passion, finding others who share your interest can be beneficial. Beyond all of the practical advice, discussion, and recommendations, finding others who share your hobby acts as a positive reinforcement. Seeing other people willing to commit to the same thing as you can help you get over the stigma that you might have against spending more time on you.

hobby1
Creative hobbies are a good place to start!

Make room for it (literally):

It’s another investment, but if you need physical space to enjoy a hobby, such as gardening, woodworking, or painting, then it’s worth making space for it. If you love movies, then you can create the perfect home entertainment space. If you paint, then think about using the garage or finishing the basement to give yourself a studio. A degree of separation is needed from the space where you practice your hobby and where you live the rest of your life. Otherwise, it’s too easy to let distractions pop in or to find your valuable hobby time spoiled because someone else is using that space.

Get your own retreat:

If you’re an outdoorsman who loves archery, horse riding, or simply walking the great outdoors, then it is worth considering making an investment into a property that allows you to indulge in it whenever you have the time. There is plenty of land for sale perfect for those who love their outdoor passions. It’s a big investment, but property can always be profitable, and it can be cheaper to keep returning to your own property rather than having to rent a lodge several times a year.

Get involved with the community:

We have already stated how finding others who share your passion can help you learn more about it and get more engaged with it. But if you’re already well versed in the passion of your choice and you are in a position to share, then you could become a more established voice in the community, as well. Think about starting a hobby podcast or a blog where you can discuss the finer points and give a little more insight, even helping new people find that passion. If you’re able to land sponsors or affiliate deals, you might even be able to monetize that passion.

hobby2

Beautiful!

Teach others:

Not all passions can be easily monetized. It depends on the market around you, any competition, and your own experience. If you have a long history in a particular field or talent, however, then you could make a side-gig or even a main career of teaching it to others. Whether it’s sports, martial arts, or knitting – consider starting a class to help newcomers find their feet. Beyond finding new people to share that joy with, teaching is also a learning experience, helping you consider your passion a lot more deeply so that you’re able to communicate it with others.

It might feel like a risk, investing time and money in something that your mind can easily rationalize as “just a hobby”. However, the benefits of finding your passion and giving yourself a reason to enjoy getting out of bed every morning are vital to helping you keep up those still important responsibilities.

Hipster Hobbies: Becoming A Collector

Hipster Hobbies: Becoming A Collector

Have you been thinking of a new hobby that you could take up? Lots of people instantly think of getting involved with a sport whenever they start looking for a new hobby, but if you are not particularly sporty, then that suggestion might not impress you! Not too keen on reading or other creative pursuits, either? Well, there is one other idea that we have for you. In fact, this suggestion is quite trendy right now as many hipsters are starting to pursue it.

Why not become a collector and start a new collection? Not only does this give you something to do in your spare time, but it could also work out as a very valuable investment eventually. Some collections, such as stamps and baseball cards, can increase in value over time and you’ll be able to sell them for a tidy profit at some point in the future. That’s especially the case if you can add any very valuable items to your collection!

Ready to get started on your new life as a serious collector? Here are some tips that can help you get your new collection up and running:

collect1

Antiques are always a good way to go!

Realize Your Passion:

First, you need to think about what you are going to collect. It’s a good idea to start collecting something related to your passion and main interests. That way, you are a lot less likely to get bored of whatever it is that you are collecting. You should also have a fairly good background knowledge on whatever it is you are collecting, which will make this a much more interesting hobby for you to pursue. Thanks to this knowledge, you will probably already be pretty clued up on how to spot authentic items and which to pass on.

collect2

Pretty!

Catalogue Everything:

Once you start a collection, you should try and make sure that you don’t accidentally buy two or more of the same item. That would be a waste of money and will only take up space in your home, especially if the items that you are collecting are large. One way to prevent this from happening is to make sure that you catalogue everything that you buy. Don’t worry; this doesn’t have to be an extensive catalogue system – simply recording each item that you buy is enough to keep track of what you have in your possession. You should be alright keeping a record in a notebook, but if your collection becomes extensive, you might want to consider buying a specialist computer software to help you keep track of everything in your collection.

collect3

Buy Authentic Items:

You will find that some collectables can be rather expensive. As a result, there are a lot of people out there who are selling fakes and pretending that they are the real deal so that they can take advantage of collectors. To make sure that you’re not fooled by any scammers, you need to make sure that you are careful to only buy authentic items. If you do buy a forgery, you will find that you won’t be able to sell it at the price that you bought to make a profit.

Are you wondering how to make sure that you always buy authentic items? First, make sure that you use reputable sellers and shops. When you visit the website where you are hoping to buy your collectibles, you should make sure that there is a wealth of information about each item. They should also have accreditations that prove that they are the genuine sellers. If possible, try and find some reviews from other sellers, as well. Generally speaking, it is always better to buy from official sites instead of auction sites like eBay, as it is easier to figure out whether the seller is genuine or not.

collect4

Stamp collecting is always popular.

Sell & Buy:

When it comes to collecting, it is rarely a one-way street. You will find that the majority of collector sell as well as buy. This is, more often than not, for practical reasons. For example, they might need to make more space in their home for more valuable items and, therefore, sell off some of their lower value items. Or, it could be for financial reasons – some collectors sell off some of their items to make funds for more expensive and rarer ones. It’s a good idea to set up your own eBay site to aid your selling. If that sounds like too much effort for you, you could also sell through a genuine collectible seller or shop. Just remember that they will take a commission, though, so you won’t get 100% of the profits.

Work On Relationships With Sellers:

Once you start to regularly return to the same sellers, it’s a good idea to try and develop a rapport and relationship with them. Lots of sellers really appreciate their loyal customers, as they help them make a profit each month. You will find that the sellers you always go back to will be really appreciative of your business. As a result, you will find that they might offer you some discounts on buying in bulk and they could also offer you other special and exclusive deals. Plus, when they start to get a feel for the kinds of things that you are after, they could contact you to let you know whenever they get something new in their shop.

Think About Storage:

Ideally, you need to try and keep all of your collectibles in pristine condition. This way, they will retain as much of their value as possible. So, it’s a good idea to try and keep the items in their original packaging. You might also want to buy some display cases if you want to use your collectibles as part of your decor.

Lots of people find that starting a collection is a very worthwhile hobby and one that can bring them significant profits. Do you think this sounds like the one for you?

Netflix Top Ten Picks Pt. 3

Standard
Netflix Top Ten Picks Pt. 3

Helloooo everyone and happy Tuesday! Today, we are going to discuss ten more of my top choices on Netflix. With the always expanding amount of movies to choose from on Netflix, sometimes it can feel impossible to pick which flick to watch. Luckily, you can choose from some Lil Red Guaranteed films below for movie night made easy:

  1. Return To Sender: I have to say, I am not the biggest Rosamund Pike fan. I find that all of her characters are exactly the same and her performances are very flat. HOWEVER, I didn’t completely hate Return To Sender. It was a pretty intense tale of a seemingly level headed woman taking total control of seeking revenge against her recently released from jail rapist. 7/10
  2. The Imitation Game: If you have not seen this movie and are a Benedict Cumberbatch fan, then SHAME ON YOU. This is actually one of my favorite movies. A true story about the closeted Alan Turing who cracked Enigma during World War II. Bursting at the seams with emotion and a riveting story line, you can’t go wrong with this one.
  3. I Love You, Man: This movie is easily one of my favorite comedies. Featuring an all star cast Of Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, and Rashida Jones, you get to live through the cringe worthy moments of man dates as newly engaged and friendless Peter tries to find groomsmen for his wedding. Freaking hilarious and oddly heartwarming, I Love You, Man is a definite crowd pleaser.
  4. Meet The Parents: This used to be one of my favorites when I was younger. Early Ben Stiller and Robert DeNiro are a match made in funny movie heaven. There are definitely some cringey parts in this movie – like finding out that “Greg” is really named Gaylord Focker, but it’s a lot of fun with some early 2000’s flare.
  5. Sing Street: I LOVE THIS MOVIE. 10/10 WOULD WATCH SEVERAL TIMES. If you are a fan of Irish cinema, good music (The Cure, anyone?), and a heart wrenching tale of the younger boy falling for the mysterious older gal then, please do yourselves a favor, and watch this movie. You’ll thank me later.
  6. The Little Prince: This animated flick is nowhere near as good as the claymation one featuring Gene Wilder – I’m warning you now. But, The Little Prince is one of my favorite books and this sweet retelling still does it justice.
  7. The Prince Of Egypt: And, speaking of animated films, this is one of the BEST animated flicks of all time. Someone, please try and change my mind. I’m not even religious and I flipping LOVE this movie. A banging soundtrack, an interesting Bible story of Moses, and visually stunning, The Prince Of Egypt rules.
  8. Raw: Certainly not the best French movie I’ve ever seen, but definitely not the worst, either. A young vegetarian veterinarian hopeful discovers a taste for meat after a hazing event at school. Like I said, not the best but not the worst – but, I still enjoyed it. *Shrugs*
  9. Changeling: As a huge Angelina Jolie fan, this movie is pure perfection. In a too crazy to be true but based on a true story … I can’t give anything away! It is a longer movie than most, but if you’re looking for a sad, shocking, inspiring movie, then tuck in for the night with Changeling.
  10. Creep 1 & 2: Both the first and the second Creep movies were very good. I’ll call it a horror flick even though there’s nothing too “scary” about it in the something is going to pop out and kill you sense. Shot documentary style, a lonely man lures videographers to remote locations to film his wolf mask wearing weirdness. I wouldn’t call these movies scary – but, they are definitely creepy!

Your next movie night is a go, with my above top ten selections! Turn on Netflix, grab your popcorn and blankets, and enjoy!

What are some of your top picks on Netflix? Which of the above movies do you plan on watching next? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Monday Update: Forgotten Netflix Top Ten Picks Edition

Hi everyone and welcome to another week here on lifewithlilred! I am an avid fan of Netflix, and couldn’t believe that I had forgotten some of my must watches on my Top Ten Picks recent post. Netflix has really stepped up their game lately and I have deeply enjoyed these additional flicks:

  1. Welcome To Me: This movie is Kristen Wiig perfection. The part of a borderline personality disorder patient turned millionaire turned talk show host was made for her. It’s quirky, hilarious, and heartwarming all at the same time. I LOVE this movie.
  2. Forgetting Sarah Marshall: I finally watched this flick about a week ago and it was so funny! With an all star cast of Jason Segal, Mila Kunis, and the hunky Russell Brand, how can you go wrong? Throwing Paul Rudd and Jonah Hill in for good measure was just the cherry on top.
  3. Bedeviled: This cheeky horror flick was actually a lot of fun. It had the scare factor of a ghostly smartphone app with some very clever humor thrown in. It wasn’t the best, by any means, but it certainly wasn’t the worst, either.
  4. Kill Bill Volumes 1 & 2: How could I forget this amazing series?! I watched these two Quintin Tarantino classics about a month ago for the first time and I was BLOWN AWAY. Is Uma Therman a badass or what?! Now how about a third one, please?
  5. The Polka King: This based on a true story Jack Black flick is a winner. It’s a humorous tale of just how far a man will go to chase his dreams of building an empire. Jack Black’s Polish accent is a trip and it is an all around great effort by all parties involved.
  6. Lion: I LOVE THIS MOVIE. Everything about this movie. The cast, the amazing true story, the cute as a button Sunny Pawar. Omg, what an absolutely mesmerizing tearjerker. I must read the book that Lion is based off of soon!
  7. V For Vendetta: One of my all time favorite movies and graphic novels. Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman are a match made in heaven and I could watch this movie on the daily. It’s an excellent pick for fans of The Matrix and justice. 😉
  8. To Kill A Mockingbird: An amazing book, an amazing movie. Gregory Peck is perfection. Need I say more?
  9. Dallas Buyers Club: Alright, alright, alright. A cast dreamed up by the movie gods, a true story, an inspiration. I loved this movie when it first came out and swept the award season and I still love it now. Definitely a tearjerker, but well worth the watch.
  10. Untraceable: It was crazy, because I watched this movie a month or so ago and a week later it was put on Netflix. This is a surprisingly gruesome mid-2000’s horror flick and I am a huge fan. And, hello, young Colin Hanks! Not for the faint of heart, but definitely for fans of Saw!

As you can see, I had no problem adding another ten movies to my Netflix must watch list. And, honestly, I could add a lot more – which I probably will! I have been nothing short of impressed with Netflix’s recent selections, and it deserves to be celebrated.

What is on your Netflix or Hulu must watch list? Shall I do another top ten post soon? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Netflix Top Ten Picks

Standard
Netflix Top Ten Picks

Howdy!! I am a creature of habit, and I enjoy my nightly routine well…nightly. I love to practice American Sign Language before bed, and after peeing several hundred times (#TMI), I like to settle in with a movie on Netflix. To me, Netflix can be hit or miss with their selection but, I’ve got to say, I’ve been thoroughly impressed these past few months. These are my Netflix Top Ten Picks:

  1. The Gift: This is a good one! In fact, I just started rewatching it last night. I am a HUGE Jason Bateman fan and it is so fun seeing him in more serious roles. If you are similar to me in that regard, then definitely give the TV series, Ozark, a try as well.
  2. Veronica: As a horror movie junkie, I had to give this Spanish language film a try. I had seen an article that said that people were turning this film off halfway through because it was so scary. Now, I wouldn’t go that far – but the movie was good. I enjoyed watching it and I’m sure I’ll rewatch it again at some point or another.
  3. The Conjuring: And, speaking of scary movies, this one is one of my favorites! You can’t go wrong with The Conjuring. I’ve seen it several times and there are parts that still get me!
  4. We Need To Talk About Kevin: Tilda Swinton gives me life. This entire cast does, actually. I love this movie. I love this book. And, similarly to Jason Bateman, it sure is fun to see John C. Reilly take on a more serious role.
  5. Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story: And, of course, you can’t mention John C. Reilly without mentioning Walk Hard, as well. This movie is a trip and is perfect for when you need a good laugh. And, can we talk about Jack White’s Cameo as Elvis Presley? Swoon!
  6. It Might Get Loud: And, speaking of Jack White, you can’t not talk about It Might Get Loud. A music documentary featuring Mr. White, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, and U2’s The Edge – it doesn’t get much better than this. I deeply, deeply enjoy this documentary and, if you like good music, you will too.
  7. The Babadook: I’m not gonna lie, I hated this movie when I saw it for the first time. And, then, I rewatched it and realized that it is just as good as people say it is. The story line and acting is all great and I can definitely see myself watching it again sometime soon.
  8. Goodfellas: This classic got added recently and I am a huge, huge fan. The cast is to die for, the director is sublime, and the soundtrack is banging. 10/10 would watch multiple times.
  9. Beauty & The Beast (French Version): The French version of Beauty & The Beast is absolutely delicious. Everything about it is just lush, gorgeous, storybook heaven and I never get sick of watching it.
  10. Berlin Syndrome: This thriller was just fantastic. I watched it about a week ago and would gladly rewatch it again. It is wonderful to see a film where the captured outsmarts the captor and it will have you rooting for the heroine the entire time.

If you ever feel like you’re endlessly scrolling through Netflix and still can’t find something to watch, just keep my top ten list in mind and you’ll be happily watching a new flick in no time!

What is on your watch list on Netflix right now? What is your night time routine? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Groovy Movies Pt. 2

Howdy! As you know from yesterday’s post, Lil Red went hard at the five dollar movie section at Target. Due to such amazing savings and my desire to amp up my DVD collection, I just had to go back this weekend – this time, bringing along my dear old dad. I ended up with four new DVDs and I think my dad bought five for himself! It was a daddy/daughter bargain night out and we had a blast. Here are the four new selections that I purchased:

groovy

I bought…

  1. Clueless: As if!! This movie speaks to me on a spiritual level and every human being should see it at least once.
  2. Bridesmaids: I snagged the last copy of this movie and I am so glad that I did! Melissa McCarthy is my hero.
  3. Lord Of The Rings 3 Film Collection: For all three LOTR movies, I paid ten bucks. You can’t beat that! Now, I just need to get The Hobbit flicks and I’ll be all set!
  4. The Interview: Classic Seth Rogen and James Franco – this movie is a trip. AND it was only FOUR BUCKS!!

I think I’m all done buying movies for a good long while, but this DVD haul was well worth it. Netflix is nice and all, but sometimes their selection is weak at best. This haul will definitely make Mushenheim Movie Night more fun for weekends to come – no trips to the library or video store included!

Which movie do you think that everyone should see once? How many movies do you have in your collection? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Monday Update: Groovy Movies Edition

Hey everyone and Happy Monday! I just wanted to make a friendly PSA that Target has the best five dollar movie selection that I have ever seen. I went on Friday to browse around and ended up with SEVEN brand new DVDs for thirty-five bucks. Now, normally I would never purchase movies because they usually range in the ten to teen dollar range and that’s too much for me. But, five dolla holla? I can definitely swing that! Take a look at my purchases and be sure to hit up Target for some five dollar movie fun:

movies

I bought…

  1. Edward Scissorhands: Such classic Johnny Depp. It doesn’t get much better than this.
  2. The Heat: One of my favorite comedies – my mom and I LOVE this movie and I swear I watch it every time it’s on TV.
  3. We’re The Millers: Lol, this movie kills me. My sister and I saw this when it came out in theaters and we were dying the entire time!
  4. Beetlejuice: Need I say more? This movie rocks.
  5. Napoleon Dynamite: I reference this movie frequently in my daily life, so buying it was a must.
  6. Horrible Bosses 2: I love the Horrible Bosses movies. I own the first one, so I might as well have bought the second!
  7. School Of Rock: This flick is one of my favorites. It’s hilarious, the music is great, and everyone in my family freaking loves it.

I feel so spoiled to have bought so many movies, but it was such an amazing deal that I just couldn’t pass it up. In fact, I plan on going back to Target again soon to snag some of the DVDs that I didn’t buy during my Friday trip. How can you say no to five dollars?!

What is your favorite movie? Who else has shopped the five dollar DVD section at Target? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Celeb Secrets: Staying Young And Beautiful

Celeb Secrets: Staying Young And Beautiful

Have you seen Tom Cruise lately? The action star is 55, and the guy still looks young enough to have a thirty-year-old love interest! How is that possible? What’s his secret? How about Madonna? She’s 58 and manages to look like she just started her music career yesterday. It’s clear that these celebrities have some secrets that keep them from growing old. But what are they? The fountain of youth, miracle drugs, Scientology? Well, as is often the case, the simplest answer to the question is the correct one. So, let’s look at some of the ways celebs stay looking so young and how you can use their tactics to turn back the clock:

secret

 He’s a babe! Shwing!

Ah, They Have Personal Trainers: When Chris Pratt started filming Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, he posted a few videos on social media of his new diet plan. It wasn’t a pretty sight, and there was definitely sadness in his eyes as he realized this is what he’d be eating for the next six months. Yes, when they are getting in shape for roles, movie stars go on serious diets and exercise routines. But, some just keep these up all year round. There are plenty of celebrities that hire personal fitness trainers that hardly ever leave their side. The benefit of this is that they never lose their physique. Instead, they always look toned and tanned.

secret1

He’s also a babe! Shwing!

Now, you might be thinking that you can’t personally afford a fitness trainer. But you’d be surprised, because they often come as part of a package deal in a gym membership. For a monthly fee, you can have someone that will constantly tell you what exercises you should be doing to stay in shape and looking young.

Has She Had A Facelift? If you’re talking about an actress or star over fifty, then the answer is usually a firm YES. There’s probably an older star that you’re sure hasn’t had a facelift, because it doesn’t look like she’s had any work done and you can always tell when someone has had surgery…right? Wrong! The stars who look natural have had work done by the best of the best to make sure that there are absolutely no tell tale surgery signs. They’ve paid extra, and they haven’t gone overboard with the cosmetic treatment. If you’re choosing a facelift surgeon, you need to make sure that you get an expert. This is the only way to guarantee that the work looks completely natural. That way, you can make sure that everyone thinks that you just have fantastic genes! 😀

secret2

Facelift or nah?

As Young As You Feel? Can positive thinking actually physically change the way you look? Can feeling like you’re sexy give you the body to die for? While it’s unclear whether positive thoughts actually change your body, they can stop it from getting any worse. The reason for this is quite simple. Stress causes you to lose your hair, your body to bloat, your skin to sag, and wrinkles to grow. All, of course, are signs of ageing, and all can be prevented simply by keeping calm and staying relaxed. Is this one of the secrets of the celebs? You bet it is! Just ask Sofia Vergara, a known fan of acupuncture therapy. Or, how about Jennifer Aniston. She loves her yoga and she should because it will keep her young. The breathing exercises through yoga calms and soothes the body and mind. So yes, feeling young and happy about yourself and who you are could help you stay young longer.

secret3

Love her!

Natural Tips: Of course, some of the celebrities swear by natural ways to stay young. For instance, celebrities with lush, thick hair often speak about their love of using bamboo oils. It’s a great way to re-nourish your hair and ensure that it’s stronger than ever. This might be the secret as to why some celebrities have hair that stays thick well into their seventies. Or, it might be movie magic, who knows! There’s also natural facial scrubs and oils, and other celebrities have mentioned avoiding makeup. Obviously, when they are on the job, they need it to look stunning. But many, like Halle Berry, never wear it offset to give her skin a well-deserved break.

secret4

 Also love her!

So, if the celebs can stay young, why can’t we? The answer is, we can and all you need to do is follow in their footsteps!

U2 Concert!!!

U2 Concert!!!

Hi everyone and happy Tuesday! Saturday, July 1st was a fantastic and wonderful day, because I got to see one of my favorite bands, U2, perform live for the second time. My Irish lads graced Cleveland, Ohio with their presence for their last concert in America for the 30th anniversary tour of The Joshua Tree and I was lucky enough to be there for it.

Honestly, saying that I felt euphoric that night is an understatement. There is nothing quite like seeing one of your all time favorite bands live. Like, you’re hearing them in person, actually seeing them with your own two eyes, and breathing in the air that they are. In CLEVELAND, OHIO?! Lol, it’s insane. I still can’t wrap my head around it, but it happened. U2 was so nice that I saw them twice and this tour was even more magical than the first.

Take a look at some pics and let’s discuss. BUT, bear in mind that my iPod camera sucks so some of them are pretty low quality. However, there are some awesome shots that my dad took with his camera thrown in for your viewing pleasure!

Unfortunately, we don’t have any halfway decent photos of OneRepublic during their opening set. The sun was just beating down and naturally, it seemed to focus right in on our seating section, so snapping any type of pic that actually looked good was damn near impossible. Having said that, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed myself while they were performing. It’s not like I hate OneRepublic but it’s also not like I’m their number one fan, either. But, my god, do they sound good live. The lead singer was an excellent showman and they did a wonderful job of hyping up the crowd.

OneRepublic sounded the same, if not better than they do on their albums and it was nice having an opener who actually did a good job. Interpol opened for U2 during the 360 tour, which I attended, and they were abysmal at best. OneRepublic essentially performed a best of their radio hits compilation including “Apologize”, “Counting Stars”, and “Good Life”, which I thought was an incredibly smart move on their part. No one wants to see an opener play obscure songs that they can’t sing along to. Despite never listening to the radio, I still was able to sing along to all of their songs, which was a great way to lift my spirits even higher for when U2 took stage.

Am I OneRepublic’s biggest fan now? No. Not even close. But they really did put on a sublime opening act. They were charismatic and had great quips with the crowd, which is always fun. But, most importantly, they showed genuine talent and musical ability and that made listening to a band that is far from my favorite an utter delight.

Now, let’s get to U2 because I almost had a heart attack when a lone Larry Mullen appeared on stage, sat himself down at his drum set, and began pounding away the iconic beginning to “Sunday Bloody Sunday”. And when I say that I almost had a heart attack, I literally did. Hello. They just opened the show with my favorite song instead of with The Joshua Tree’s opener of “Where The Streets Have No Name”. I genuinely believed that I had died and gone to heaven.

“Sunday Bloody Sunday” was followed by “New Year’s Day”, which was another obvious crowd (and Sarah) pleaser. My god, it was just magnificent. After two back to back strong openers, the pace slowed down a little with “Bad” followed by “Pride (In The Name Of Love)”. Despite an almost abrupt feeling change of pace, it was pure U2 and they were so in their element that you couldn’t even be mad at them.

Now, up until the band began playing The Joshua Tree in its entirety, they were performing solely on the tree silhouette, which can be seen in the pictures above. But, the show didn’t even seem to begin until they made their way back onto the main stage and “Where The Streets Have No Name” started to play.

With the shift into U2 playing their 30th anniversary album, the infinitely long screen backing the stage turned into the background for videos specially designed for each song. With every hit you were transported into videos that told stories of the land, war, poverty, agony, love, and pride. From ordinary citizens placing an army helmet on their heads to strong and stoic Native Americans gently guarding their homeland, you got the sense of what the songs on The Joshua Tree were originally written for and what they mean to the band now in a time of such political and emotional turmoil.

Throughout the show, you could tell how much the band genuinely enjoyed bringing this album back to life. A light-spirited Bono playfully called his whole band sexy as well as the entire city of Cleveland (ayyy!) and halfway through The Joshua Tree set he graciously took a moment to welcome us to the second half of the album. What a guy, what a guy, what a heck of a guy.

It was funny hearing The Joshua Tree live, because you often forget about that almost country twang that the second half of the album brings. This was even more emphasized with videos of a skinny jeaned and denim button down clad woman painting an American flag on an abandoned home. She then showed off her lassoing skills in a red, white, and blue bikini top. Mama Mia!

After The Joshua Tree set ended with “Mothers Of The Disappeared” that came with a powerful backdrop of children holding candles that eventually blew out, we were invited by Bono to “stick around” for their encore. You would have been a fool not to. The encore was a fun, upbeat party to some of their most well known hits, which included “Elevation”, “Vertigo”, “Mysterious Ways”, and my all time favorite – “Beautiful Day”. You guys already know how much that song means to me, so yes, the water works were definitely flowing at their hardest then!! (I have no shame in admitting that I cried like a baby for a majority of the concert – I really just can’t help myself!)

U2’s encore ended with a gorgeous performance of “One” to draw a perfect night to a close. Guys – it really was perfect. I can’t explain to you how special it was to see the band that is so loved by my entire family while standing side by side with them in the stands. I consider myself so lucky that I have gotten to see U2 not once but twice now at 23 and both shows would literally have to be pried from my memory banks to be forgotten.

So there you have it, my experience at the U2 Concert!!! What shows have you seen recently? Who is attending any music festivals this summer? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

U2 Concert Excitement!!

Hey everyone and happy weekend!! I am starting the month of July off with a bang because I get to see one of my favorite bands live for the SECOND time – U2!! It’s a very exciting time to be a Lil Red because not even two weeks ago, I got to see my other favorite band in concert, AFI. I have loved U2 ever since I was a kid (so a real Lil Lil Red!). Having two parents that simply live for them instilled a deep love for U2 in me from a young age.

Lyrics from “Beautiful Day” was the first thing that I got tattooed on me the day that I turned eighteen and it will always remain one of my favorite songs until the day I die. I was lucky enough to see U2 in Pittsburgh a couple of years back for their 360 tour and I had the time of my life. Best believe I ugly cried the whole time. Anyways, when my family heard that a 30th anniversary tour for The Joshua Tree was happening, it wasn’t so much as a need than a must to see them again – especially since they’ll be in Cleveland!

OneRepublic will be the opener, and although I’m not their biggest fan, they are sure to put on a fun show. But to see songs from U2’s iconic album live and in the flesh will definitely make tonight one to remember! I’M SO EXCITED!!!!!! Definitely check back for my concert review and think of me if you happen to listen to U2 today. What concerts are you attending this summer? Who else is a major U2 fan? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah
