A Former Retail Worker’s Black Friday Lament

Hellooo everyone and happy Black Friday! Boy, I’ve got to tell you – it never gets old not having to work on Black Friday any more. After over four years of working retail, the mall madness is the last place that I want to be, whether it be to work or to shop! It’s so crazy to think that as this post is being published, I would be stuck at work running around like a madwoman – if we were living in 2010 to 2014, of course. #blessed

Some retail workers live for Black Friday and that’s cool, but I was never one of them. I detested Black Friday like a fly buzzing in your ear, the common cold, or the relative that you can’t stand at family gatherings. As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays and I was always very bitter that I never got to fully enjoy it for four years in a row. Of course, I’m thankful for those jobs but my sixteen to twenty year old self didn’t know how to separate the two so that I could still have fun on the holiday, despite dreading going into work in T-minus twelve hours.

As much as I enjoy a fast paced lifestyle, working for over twelve hours straight while on your feet the whole time and rushing to and fro between customers is for the birds. I genuinely don’t know how I did it, especially when I was working two jobs – hello, twenty hour day. And for this reason, among many others, I respect the hell out of retail workers during this time of the year.

It’s funny, because you would think that during the holiday season, people would be full of good cheer and might be even overly kind. Sadly, this is not the case. Don’t get me wrong, I have memories of delightful customers during the holidays, but those are trumped by people who have almost made me cry because the line was too long, I didn’t have the shirt that they wanted, etc. And for what? The shirt isn’t going to magically appear. The line isn’t going to move in double time. And the craziest thing, is that it was always adults that were speaking in raised voices and being out of line to me and my fellow retail workers. Just SHAMEFUL.

So, having said that, PLEASE be sure to be kind to all of the workers that you interact with today, throughout the holiday season, and always. Working retail is a choice and a responsibility – but how many employees really want to cut their family time short to work a long Black Friday shift? Slim to none. Enjoy yourselves during your Black Friday shopping, but be sure to give all of the employees who made your outing possible a little credit! I promise you that they will appreciate it far more than you know.

How was everyone’s Thanksgiving? Do you have any crazy Black Friday stories? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Black Friday Shopping Do’s And Don’ts

Standard
Black Friday Shopping Do’s And Don’ts

Hello everyone and happy Tuesday! I can’t say that I’ve ever gone Black Friday shopping before and have no real desire to, either. BUT, after working retail for four years, I’ve grown savvy to some pro tips that will get you through the madness with some great deals and your personal safety/sanity still intact. Take a look:

DO:

Know your sales: Most stores do the same Black Friday sales every year. PacSun does, The Body Shop does, Claire’s does, Piercing Pagoda does (All stores that I’ve worked at.). Investigate the sales from year’s past and see if you notice a pattern. That way, you can determine if it’s even worth it to go out and hit the shops. Most stores won’t give you their Black Friday sales info before the day – but it doesn’t hurt to ask, either!

Know your sales Pt. 2: Normally, Black Friday sales don’t end on Black Friday. At PacSun and The Body Shop, their sales didn’t end for a solid month. If you don’t get to the stores on the actual day, I wouldn’t sweat it too much – especially because Cyber Monday is still a thing.

Cyber Monday Savvy: And speaking of Cyber Monday, get hip to it. In some cases, Cyber Monday sales are even better than Black Friday deals, especially if the stores you prefer to shop at have a stronger online presence. Do your research of sales from the past as mentioned in the above sections and make your decision on which day to shop. Or throw caution to the wind and shop on both!

Get there early: If there’s something that you really want, I’d recommend staking out at that specific store front at least an hour before opening. That way, you can get in, grab the item, and get out. It also doesn’t hurt to see if you can put items on hold prior to the Black Friday date so that you can purchase them with the sales and you don’t have to run into the store like a madwoman to get it.

Let it go: If you find yourself in a stand off for the last of something, just let it go. People are literally crazy and I’d rather leave the store in one piece than get the last of something that I’m sure you can buy at a later date.

DON’T:

Be that person: Black Friday is, by definition, a crazy time. Please have some respect. At the mall that I worked in, the store manager of Victoria’s Secret got punched in the face THREE YEARS IN A ROW. That’s pure insanity. You are all better than that. Don’t be that person.

Go in willy nilly: It’s essential to have a game plan during Black Friday. What items do you want? What stores are a must to go into? Can you and whomever you’re going shopping with divide and conquer to get everything on your lists? Devise a plan and stick to it so that you can make the most out of your Black Friday shopping extravaganza.

Buy in excess: Yes, it’s great to get a good deal. BUT do you really need everything that you’re buying? It’s nice to see all of the money that you saved, but don’t buy stuff just for the sake of buying it on Black Friday. As I mentioned before, check the deals. Some stores already have their sales going on now. Think of what is really necessary to purchase and try and do it beforehand, if you can. Being involved in all of the Black Friday hubbub can make you feel inclined to overspend so DON’T FALL FOR IT!!

Black Friday is not everyone’s cup of tea. It certainly isn’t mine! But that doesn’t mean that I don’t know a thing or two about how to shop during it. Use my pro tips and have the best Black Friday shopping experience yet! What are some of your Black Friday do’s and don’ts? What are some of the best Black Friday deals that you have scored? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Bath Bomb Blitz: Lush Edition

Bath Bomb Blitz: Lush Edition

Hi everyone and happy weekend! When my sister, mom, and I hit up Beachwood Mall in Cleveland last week, we had our very first Lush shopping trip. Throughout the years of blogging, I’ve seen posts about Lush products almost daily so, of course, I was eager to finally be able to try them out for myself.

To be honest, the entire experience was a bit underwhelming. The store was small and crowded, the products seemed to be outrageously overpriced, and everything there just seemed…unnecessary. I don’t know, I’m all for treating yourself and I’m happy that I bought some goodies just to try them out but I don’t think that I would ever purchase anything from there again. I guess I fail to see the point of becoming a Lush patron when there are countless stores that have better prices, products, and an overall shopping experience. This was a disappointing realization, to say the least, since I was pretty excited to give them a go.

But all of this is neither here nor there because the products have been bought and I have every intention of enjoying them when I have a pampering party. I started my Lush experience with their “DAD” bath bomb, which I thought was a hilarious purchase. Lol, like why? Haha, I saw it and, because I pride myself on my offbeat sense of humor, I just had to add this to my purchase pile. Take a look at my DAD bomb work its magic:

lush2lush3lush4lush5lush6lush7

So this bath bomb didn’t really smell like anything. Its scent was neither bad nor good so there wasn’t much of an aromatic atmosphere happening in the tub. However, it was pretty fun to watch the bath bomb explode into an array of blues, whites, and oranges. It fizzled for a fairly long time, too – at least twelve to fifteen minutes and by the time I eased into the tub, it still wasn’t done.

I liked the cyan color that the bath water ultimately turned in to and I also appreciated that it didn’t leave any crayon colored residue on the tub. The best part of my DAD bomb was how moisturized it made my body feel. I felt so silky smooth upon exiting my bath and my skin felt so nourished and well taken care of. This was a really nice touch, because the two bath bombs that I had used prior to this one didn’t leave my skin feeling any different.

Overall, I did enjoy using this Lush product. However, I can’t justify spending eight dollars plus on a bath bomb in the future. That shopping trip was fun and, like I said, I was okay with buying things because I had never been to Lush before. After I finish up my purchases, I’m beyond cool with sticking to buying random bath bombs at TJMaxx for three bucks a pop and face masks from The Body Shop, which I always manage to get excellent prices on either online or (once again) at TJs.

So there you have it, my first Bath Bomb Blitz: Lush Edition! How do you feel about Lush? What is your favorite product from there? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Zara Haul: Black & White, Alright Edition

Zara Haul: Black & White, Alright Edition

Hi everyone and welcome to the conclusion to my Zara Haul series featuring a twenty dollar button down dress with to die for details! I’m unsure of the original price for my dress because there was no tag on the item but I’m assuming that it’s starting price was around seventy or so dollars, because that’s the Zara way. The button down dress is an item that I took for granted until I realized that I flipping love them, so now I have to make up for lost time and BUY ALL THE BUTTON DOWNS! Take a look at this new beauty and let’s discuss:

bwbw1bw2bw3

White is a color that I don’t wear very frequently, just because I find it very anxiety provoking. Hello, future coffee stains. But, I always do enjoy a crisp, white piece of clothing when the perfect one comes a knockin. I simply love this dress, so having to be extra careful with eating, makeup, etc. while wearing it is totally worth it. The sleek fabric, kimono-esque style, blossoming pattern, and daring details all make this dress worthy of being in my expansive wardrobe.

The button down dress is a classic piece of clothing. It’s something that looks good on every body type and can really be worn for any occasion depending on how you style it. The button down dress offers timeless beauty to all who wear it and I am ashamed that it has taken me so long to appreciate that. The few button down dresses that I own are some of my favorites, so it’s definitely nice to be able to find one that I think is so well suited to me to add to the collection.

From the lace up detailing on the side to the barbell shaped cuff links on the sleeves, this dress is full of surprises. Probably the biggest surprise being that white actually looks good on me! As a very pale gal, white is something that I tend to unconsciously shy away from because of the fear that it will wash me out (And also stains, lol.), but it’s actually quite the contrary. By some divine miracle, the color white manages to enhance and exaggerate my skin and hair color even more, creating a stunning effect – especially while wearing red lipstick!

Of course, I’m looking forward to wearing this as an actual dress but I’m more excited to pair this with some black super skinny jeans and a nice pair of stilettos for an edgy, office chic look. Throw a blazer or a moto jacket over top of it and you’re all set with a look that can be easily suitable for day or night!

So there you have it, the conclusion to my Zara Haul: Black & White, Alright Edition! What was your favorite item from my haul? Who else is getting some serious summer shopping in? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Zara Haul: Anarchy In The UK Edition

Helloooo one and all and welcome to some more Zara goodness compliments of going way too hard at the mall last weekend! I have two more fabulous pieces of clothing to share with you guys today and tomorrow to conclude my series of buying literally all of the things. We explored my love of army green yesterday and now we’re going to revisit that same love in this here shirt dress a la GI Jane. Take a look:

usausa1

I’m sure that after seeing the back of this badass button down, the title for this post makes a bit more sense!

One thing that I really am a fan of when it comes to clothing is random images and ironic/edgy/silly slogans. Obviously, this wayyy oversized shirt dress sports a pretty edgy nod to all things anarchy cool and I am nothing short of obsessed. The old school London punk scene gives me life, and I can so picture this shirt being worn by a filthy, pierced up, punked out boy or girl. Paying tribute to a music and lifestyle scene that speaks to me through my appearance and clothing is something that I never pass up the opportunity on, so clearly, this button down was a must buy.

The length of this trench coat/shirt/dress is what sold me on this purchase, asides from the color and the rule breaker adorned back. I love, love, love long pieces of clothing so the fact that this piece goes down to my mid-calves was a definite game changer. People typically think that us short girls (I’m 5’1) can’t wear long/oversized items but that’s not true. You just have to know how to style them and give yourself length in other ways. Which brings me to the next segment on how to wear this bad boy, because the options really are limitless:

  • Over a pair of shorts and a crop top or bralette with a pair of combat boots or oxfords
  • As an actual dress with a huge belted middle and chunky heels
  • Over skin tight leather jeans/leggings
  • As an overcoat on top of a frilly frock

And bear in mind that accessories are key:

  • Oversized gold jewelry
  • A fistful of rings (preferably ones that you wear on two fingers to give the illusion of fashionable brass knuckles)
  • Frilly socks sticking out of your oxfords/heels/combat boots
  • Black nails
  • Gigantic hobo bag
  • A bold attitude

Best believe that I’ll be having a blast incorporating this new statement piece into my outfits! 😀

So there you have it, the next wardrobe addition of my Zara Haul: Anarchy In The UK Edition! What do your clothes say about you? How would you style this top? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

P.S.: The last mark down price visible on the tag before my purchase price of forty dollars was seventy dollars. I am not sure of the original price.

Zara Haul: Shake Your Pom Poms Edition

Zara Haul: Shake Your Pom Poms Edition

Hello everyone and happy Hump Day! Welcome to the halfway mark of the week and to another wardrobe addition from my recent Zara Haul! If there’s one color that Lil Red loves (other than black), it’s green. Army green, emerald green, lime green, forest green – I’m a fan of all of it. Thanks to my pasty pale skin and bright red hair, the color green seems to exaggerate those features in the best way possible. Thanks to Zara’s amazing sale and a ton of army green a go go options to pick from, I ended up with two oversized GI Jane button downs, starting with this one:

pompom1pom2

I’m going to be honest with you guys: I hate the pom pom trend. Abso-freaking-lutely hate it. There’s something about such an obvious crafting supplies item on clothes that just doesn’t do it for me. However, this shirt is a totally different story. In case you all haven’t noticed by now, I love obnoxious, statement pieces. To me, nothing screams that more than a huge, baroque pattern on the back of a shirt that’s adorned with beaded rosettes. Lol, hello bold, look at me button down!

I like how unexpected that these pom pom growths on the back of this shirt are. Haha, like why? Frankly, this top is an awful idea in the best way possible and I love everything about it. The shape of the shirt, the way that all of the colors on the back look with my skin and hair, all of the styling possibilities that come with it. I dunno, I just like it.

I’m really looking forward to incorporating this piece into my fall wardrobe because I feel like it’s such a crisp, autumn day button down. Pairing this over a maxi skirt or dress on the warmer fall days before the weather takes a cold turn sounds like just what the doctor ordered. And I so can’t wait to get all matchy matchy and wear this shirt with my army green platforms compliments of ModCloth for a cadet cool look.

So there you have it, another nail in the coffin from my Zara Haul! My Pom Poms have indeed been shook with this shirt (lol), but make sure you tune in tomorrow to see my next army green a go go top in my Anarchy In The UK Edition. What is your favorite color to wear? How do you incorporate craft store cool into your looks? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

P.S.: The most recent mark down price on this shirt was seventy dollars and I got it for thirty. I don’t know how much my button down was originally before it got marked down, though.

Zara Haul: Moto Madness Edition

Standard
Zara Haul: Moto Madness Edition

Yeah, I know what you guys are thinking after reading the title. “Sarah, you have like three moto jackets already. Do you really need more?” THE ANSWER IS YES, YES I DO!!! Zara motorcycle jackets make me feel some type of way in the best way ever. I would never, ever buy one of them for full price because they range from about one hundred and fifty dollars plus. But forty dollars for my new jacket? I can swing that. Take a look:

zarazara1

I am a punk rocker at heart. I love the music, the scene, and especially the style. Badass clothing speaks to me on a spiritual level so you can see why this jacket was a must buy for me. The last marked down price on this moto baby before forty dollars was one hundred and thirty. Knowing what an amazing deal it was and how much I loved this jacket after trying it on helped me justify the buy. I am a total jacket junkie and not adding this piece of pure badassery to my collection would have truly broken my heart. And we can’t have that!

The studs? The sleek black? The removable hood? The Zippers? The pockets? The weighted yet fitted shape? Hello! This jacket is perfect. The moto jackets that I have before adding this one to my hoard are moto in shape but more fashion in style. This Zara piece, to me, is a “true” motorcycle jacket and I couldn’t be more obsessed with it if I tried.

I’ve mentioned before that I prefer shopping in store at Zara rather than online and the sizing in this jacket is a prime example of why. I am 90% of the time an extra small in Zara’s tops, blouses, and dresses and the remaining 10% of the time, a small. However, I purchased this jacket in a medium. The small fit, but layering with it would have been impossible so medium was the way to go for when fall and winter hit. But, had I followed my normal clothing size shopping online at Zara, the exchanging and reordering of this jacket would have been a big fat pain in the booty-boo.

Saying that I’m so excited to incorporate this jacket into my outfits is the understatement of the century because I have a feeling that I’m going to be wearing it constantly. Over dresses? Check. Maxi skirts? Sure. Moto jacket/short shorts combo that I’ve grown increasingly fond of? You know it. Skinny jeans and ankle booties? Obvs. Hello, new statement jacket. I love you.

So there you have it, the next part in my Zara Haul series: Moto Madness Edition! Who else is a jacket junkie? What is your favorite piece of cold weather clothing? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Monday Update: Zara Haul Edition

Monday Update: Zara Haul Edition

Guys. I did something bad……

I spent way too much money at Zara yesterday. But before you all sharpen the pitchforks and yell at me for giving in to my shopping addiction – LET ME EXPLAIN!!! My mom, sister, and I had a GAO (Girls’ Afternoon Out) and ventured out to Beachwood Mall, which is about a thirty-five minute trek for us. This mall is freaking amazing. It’s home to Zara, Lush, a HUGE Forever 21, H&M, Saks, Nordstrom, and the list goes on. So, not only were we in exotic new territory that we never get to go to, BUT Zara was having an incredible sale. You can’t not stock up at your favorite store when you don’t get to go very often, right? RIGHT?!

And stock up, I did. This week will be dedicated to my gorgeous new wardrobe additions compliments of my all on sale Zara Haul. We’ll start with the newest update to my business casual attire with this darling little number seen below:

lady1lady

Zara button downs give me life and, coincidentally, quirky button downs make up a majority of my business cashe collection. So, obviously, I HAD TO BUY IT!! I snagged this lady bug beauty for twenty bucks. I’m not sure of the original price on this shirt, but the last button down I purchased from Zara was fifty smackers, so I consider this a steal!

This oversized button down is wonderful because it’s versatile. It’s long enough to be worn as a dress with a thick pair of tights underneath and a belted middle or over top of super skinny jeans tucked or untucked for a whimsical work look. I love wearing my other Zara button down as a dress, especially in this summer heat. However, both of these tops look totally darling tucked into pants or a skirt, as well.

Accessories are key when it comes to styling a business casual ensemble, so opt for a chunky necklace, a statement ring or two, and some killer heels to make you queen of the office!

This week on lifewithlilred will be an ode to all things Zara, starting with my Monday Update: Zara Haul Edition! Tune in tomorrow to see another one of my on sale snags. What is your favorite store to shop at? Who else goes a bit credit card happy when their favorite store is far away? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

P.S.: I bought some goodies at Lush for the first time so be on the lookout for some Bath Bomb Blitz posts in the future! 😀

Panty Problems

Standard
Panty Problems

Helloooo everyone and happy Monday! I hope that all of you had a wonderful weekend and a lovely Mother’s Day if you celebrated! I have to tell you guys, I am having some MAJOR Panty Problems up in here, up in here. Your girl has needed some new panties for a while now and I decided that this was the weekend that I would make the panty purchase. My mom and I were going to go up to Belden Village, which is a mall about a  half an hour away from us in Canton so that I could shop at Aerie and I was really excited!

Unfortunately, no other malls near me have an Aerie, which is a damn shame considering it’s my normal panty stomping grounds. But that always has been okay with me because Belden Village is my favorite mall to shop at. Before my faithful sidekick – MY MOM and I left, she also treated me to an Aerie gift card as an early birthday present so that I could get my panty on. It was basically the sweetest thing ever and I was so ready to hit the road so that I could revamp my panty drawer ASAP.

SO, we got to the mall and we went to Aerie and it was essentially the most disappointing moment in my life because every single panty there was nowhere close to moving me on a spiritual level . Like, seriously? I have this here gift card and have made the trek to the mall and literally Not. One. Single. Panty. spoke to me. I couldn’t believe it.

I have never not had good luck at Aerie when it comes to panties, but here I was being surrounded by these…these…panty imposters with a gift card burning a hole in my pocket and NOTHING to spend it on. I was in shock. I was disappointed. And I was simply beside myself in mourning for the current uselessness of my gift card and the fact that my panty drawer would be none the better that night.

We walked out of Aerie and I felt dejected and defeated but I figured that we might as well look at Victoria’s Secret, since we were at the mall. I’m not a huge Vicky S fan when it comes to panties. Frankly, I think that they’re an absolute rip off – but at this point, I felt like I needed something and Victoria’s Secret beckoned me into their pink and black emblazoned store with the promise of severely overly priced panties. And like a sheep walking into the slaughter, I entered the store.

Oh, Victoria’s Secret. A store full of sexy little underthings for prices that you could probably buy a kidney with off of the black market. Don’t get me wrong – all of my bras are from Vicky S. I’m just a ballin on a budget kind of gal. I’m more than willing to shell out for a nice bra but panties are just a different story, which is why I’ve always shied away from purchasing them from Victoria’s Secret. But, there I was, Angel Card in hand and a whole store of panties to pick from…

And I hated all of them. Every single panty there that was on some type of a promotion did nothing for me. Similar to Aerie, they were all just blah. But guys…guys…I really felt like I needed to buy some freaking panties – so what did I do? I made my way to the most expensive table of panties which were three for thirty-five or something along those lines and began to hunt for the perfect pairs because it was the only table in the store that I even remotely liked.

After about five minutes, the deed was done and I made my way to the register. The total came close to forty dollars and I just had to stare at the price for a minute, like a cow looking on to an oncoming train. And, I swiped my card and exited the store…

Instantly, I felt like I had made a big fat mistake but didn’t say anything until we got into the car and were on the highway. I then made the announcement that “I have no idea why I just bought those”. It was obviously a moment of weakness because I genuinely see no justification in spending forty dollars for three pairs of panties and I ended up returning them at a nearby mall the next day.

Long story short, my Panty Problems have been a source of much grief and woe this past weekend and here I stand, STILL PANTY-LESS. G DMXCN SMZDNCDCLKSANCKMASJM AHHHHHHHHHHH. Okay. Wow, I really needed that. Anyways, I guess the moral of the story is to not buy something because you feel obligated to (ESPECIALLY expensive panties), patience is a virtue, yada yada yada. And I guess I’m just going to have to wait until Aerie’s panties don’t completely suck until I spend my gift card. *Patience is a virtue, patience is a virtue, patience is a virtue.*  Smh. The End.

So there you have it, my Panty Problems for the weekend, which is obvs enough to last a lifetime! Where do you get the cutest panties from? How about the best bras? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

First Sephora Purchase!!

First Sephora Purchase!!

Hi everyone and TGIF! Yesterday my sister and I went to the mall and I *gasp* bought something from Sephora! I really wasn’t expecting to or planning on it. Really. But it happened and I can’t say that I’m too upset about it! It only seems fitting that my First Sephora Purchase would be a red lipstick (yes, I’m obsessed), so take a look and let’s discuss:

seph2seph3seph4

Urban Decay Metallized lipstick in Wrath

So, yeah. Like I said, I really wasn’t planning on buying anything – let alone a seventeen dollar lipstick. But, damnit, I just couldn’t help myself. IT’S SO PRETTY! As you guys know, I just bought myself a new lipstick with glitter in it but that doesn’t mean that I wasn’t still in love with metallic shades, either. This Urban Decay shade spoke to me on a spiritual level and I desperately needed it in my life.

The purchase of this lipstick was a bit of an emotional rollarcoaster, because there were no tubes of Wrath to buy behind the tester. Just my luck. Frankly, I wouldn’t have been all that disappointed if they were all out, but still – I really liked it. I asked one of the employees if they might have any more and she legit searched for five minutes and with every passing second I could feel my heart sink lower and lower.

BUT MY LUCK TURNED AROUND because she finally found my new lipstick and at that point, I couldn’t not buy it! Guys. This shade is SO. Freaking. Gorgeous. It’s great because when you think metallic for shades of red, you think of colors with a more rusty, orange tint to it (and any shade of orange lippie looks horrendous on me). But not Wrath. This Urban Decay lipstick has the purest of red pigments with a chrome finish and I am so madly in love with it.

I asked one of the employees if she could put it on for me just so I could be sure and I got the stamp of approval from both her and my sister. And also me, too! Because that would have kind of sucked if I ended up hating this color! As soon as I wear this lipstick out, I will be sure to take a shameless selfie so that all of you can see it, too!

So there you have it, my First Sephora Purchase! What was the first thing that you bought at Sephora? What is your favorite Urban Decay lipstick shade? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah
