Surgery Story

Hello! A lot of you have shown interest and sent well wishes in regards to my surgery from hell last month and it has been so appreciated. Now that I’m finally in the clear, I figured I would give all of you a run down of what happened, because it was pretty intense! For those of you who don’t remember, last month I got all four of my wisdom teeth out as well as a gum transplant, which is when gums from the palette of the mouth get sewn into areas where the gums are receding. In my case, it was essentially along the front length of my bottom teeth. Hurray!

The first thing that I can remember about waking up from surgery is screaming from the anesthesia, which is what always happens when I come out of it. A nurse then walked in the room to inform me that I had to be quiet because other people were in the office. Then, she had me get up and go into my dad’s car to get home. Sweet! The entire car ride home, I can remember asking my dad if he was my dad. And he, in fact, was. So that’s always a plus.

Once I got home, everything went as expected and I spent the rest of that Friday and weekend recovering. Then, on Monday, I returned back to work. And everything until Thursday was going as good as it could be, despite the pain. It was about six days out from surgery that things started going poorly, and I had to leave work because the pain was getting really intense. I went home and figured I had pushed myself too hard post-op and decided to spend a long weekend recovering. At that point, I was still eating even though it was really hard and soldiering on thinking that this was all just part of the surgery drill. I was oh so wrong.

Within the next few days, the pain got so bad that I could no longer eat and I decided to take a trip back to the surgeon. He informed me that my oral hygiene was bad and to brush better. Yes, brush better even though I had seven open wounds in my mouth. I received no pain medication, left the office feeling just as miserable, and went home to try and implement the doctor’s advice. It was within this time period that I had to start drinking with a syringe, because I couldn’t stand any type of food or liquid touching the surgery sites in my mouth. I also had to cancel all of my clients for the week, because I was too weak and woozy with pain, lack of sleep, and hunger to do anything.

For EIGHT DAYS, I drank Gatorade and water from a syringe and, then, the weekend rolled around and I couldn’t stop throwing up. My empty stomach couldn’t handle the medication cocktail of Motrin and Tylenol that I was taking. So, you can only imagine what stomach acid felt like on all of the wounds. Sunday came and I had to go to the ER to get fluids, anti nausea medicine, and Morphine administered to me via IV and I was given a prescription for some liquid Codine and nausea meds to take home.

The following day, I went back to the surgeon and he told me that the sites where he took gum from the roof of my mouth pretty much bottomed out on itself and I had nothing but exposed bone up there. Thus, the extreme pain when it came to basically anything. He also treated a dry socket, during which a smiling nurse told me to be quiet while I yelped in pain as a pack of gauze was shoved in the hole where my wisdom tooth was taken out. So nice!

The only positive about that visit was that I learned what was wrong with me and that I finally was prescribed with painkillers so that I could try chugging some Ensure to help get my strength up. The surgeon told me he has never seen anything like what my mouth was doing, so that was also very reassuring. For the next several days, I was drinking up to ten Ensure a day to try and make up for the eight days where I ate nothing.

Although I still could barely sleep or do anything, for that matter, I felt like I was somewhat on the upswing, because I was taking in some calories. And, then, when it felt like nothing else could go wrong – my jaw got infected on Christmas day. Happy holidays to me, am I right? A huge, painful knot had formed in what felt like an hour and one side of my face was extremely swollen. So, another trip to the surgeon was scheduled for two days later.

At this appointment, I was given antibiotics for the infection and, although the surgeon noted my obvious need for more painkillers, I was not given any because of the opioid epidemic, so that was awesome. From December 27th to January 3rd when I returned back to work, I was in a weird limbo of doing nothing, drinking Ensure, and attempting to eat pureed food. I don’t think I started eating soft food somewhat regularly until the following weekend. You guys have no idea how good any type of food tastes after throwing back bottles of Ensure day in and day out!

It took me a while to get back into the swing of work because, unfortunately, I had to take over three weeks off. And, during my first week or so back, I got tired very easily while on the job and had to rest a lot. The only major upset I’ve experienced was two weeks ago, when I pulled two huge chunks of bone out of the roof of my mouth, which was super delicious. Other than that, things have gone fairly well, thank goodness.

December truly was a miserable month for me. Not only was the pain in my mouth so extreme, but I didn’t get my first full night of sleep until January 5th so I was utterly exhausted, my stomach was a mess because of the medicine that I was taking and the liquid diet, and it hurt to do just about anything. I had to take a lot of time off of work and, because I’m self employed, I got no type of sick leave. The Ensure was expensive. And, the holidays just felt sad and gloomy, which made me feel even worse, because it is usually my favorite time of the year.

I am so thankful to be feeling better and back to work and I am slowly forgetting about the major trauma that I went through for the duration of a month. And, obviously, I will never be recommending the surgeon who I saw to anyone, EVER! Woof.

Has anyone dealt with the trauma of a surgery gone wrong? What is your least favorite type of doctor to see? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Happy New Year!

Hello everyone and a very Happy New Year to one and all! We are officially in 2019! Can you believe it?! It’s a brand new year for all of us and another year of fabulousness on lifewithlilred. As usual, I didn’t make any New Year’s Resolutions. And, sadly, my mouth is still wreaking havoc on me from my surgery, so celebrating isn’t in the cards for me, either. But, to continue on in the holiday season is exciting, all the same, and I hope that all of you enjoy yourselves no matter how you spend your day! Happy 2019!

How are you celebrating New Years? What are some of your New Year’s Resolutions? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Happy Haulidays: Sister Edition

Hello everyone and welcome to the last post of the Haulidays! Today, we will be looking at what my sister, Kristen, gifted me with. Kristen is an amazing gift giver and always seems to pick out the perfect presents, even if it’s never necessarily what I ask for! But, that’s just what sisters do, I guess. 🙂 Take a look at some pics and let’s discuss:

The Haul:

  • Lush Jelly Bomb in Turtle
  • Lush Bath Bomb in World’s Smallest Disco
  • Huda Beauty palette in Emerald Obsessions
  • Victoria’s Secret Dream Angels bra

Quite the haul, right?! Like some of my other friends, Kristen knows to gift me with Lush products for holidays and birthdays. I love every single item from Lush, but they are treats that I rarely buy for myself, so it always makes for the best gift. And, let’s be honest, what girl doesn’t need a new bra? I only wear the Dream Angels collection from Victoria’s Secret and will opt for black lingerie nine times out of ten, so the bra Kristen picked for me is definitely one that I would buy for myself!

Finally, the Huda Beauty palette in Emerald Obsessions. Long story short, it is GORGEOUS! We will look at it in more detail tomorrow so be prepared for a palette filled with the most stunning metallic golds and greens that you’ve ever seen. Both of which are my favorite eye makeup colors to wear. Each gift that Kristen got for me was a home run, and her thoughtfulness and generosity truly makes her the best sister that a gal could ask for. :*)

What did you get for your holiday haul? What do you like to gift for your siblings? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Happy Haulidays: Brother & Sister In Law Edition

Howdy! For a few days until Christmas Eve, my brother and sister in law flew up from Atlanta, Georgia to be with my family. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to spend as much time with Peter and Megan as I would have liked, because of complications with my wisdom teeth surgery. But, I was still so happy to see them and celebrate all the same! Here’s a look at what they brought Lil Red for the haulidays:

The Haul:

  • Flat top hat
  • Black lace parasol

Peter and Megan really pulled through on their purchases, because I wanted a parasol BAD this Christmas. It has been an accessory that I’ve felt suits Lil Red for a long time and this black lace one is just perfect. It’s edgy, cool, and going to be oh so extra when shading my pasty pale skin from the sun! And, of course, you can never go wrong with a hat for me, because I love hats of all shapes and sizes. I don’t own any completely flat top styles in my collection, so this new one is a great addition to my hat hoard. Love it!

Did you have family from out of state visiting this holiday? Does a lot of your family live close to you? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Hello and welcome to the Happy Haulidays posts here on lifewithlilred! The sweet gifts seen below are compliments of my Blogging Bestie, AKA Kate from Live In The Nautical. The package that came all the way from New York arrived at the exact right time last week, because I had just returned from an absolutely traumatizing appointment at the oral surgeon and a pick me up was much needed. I was so happy and surprised to find a bag full of goodies from Lush waiting for me on the kitchen table and it definitely made me forget about my misery for a few precious moments. Take a look:

I’m Back!

Hello! After some grueling time away from my blog baby, Lil Red is officially back. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still in a buttload of pain but, it’s somewhat manageable now and I missed everyone too much to keep away. Long story short, after my wisdom teeth and gum transplant surgery, I had some pretty major complications. This included dehydration, exposed bone in the roof of my mouth, sockets that needed irrigated, and excruciating pain. It. Was. Awful.

But, I’m here now just in time for the holidays and I am so happy to be back in the blogging world with all of my beloved friends and readers. I would appreciate it if everyone would continue sending me the warm fuzzies though, because I’m still hurting pretty badly. And, I will see all of you tomorrow to chit chat about my December finishes! Much love. -Sarah

Super Sweet Surprise

Super Sweet Surprise

Hello! As you guys know, I recently had my wisdom teeth removed and it sucked on ice. The operation was done on a Friday morning and I had to go back to work on Monday. I was in a lot of pain and, unfortunately, I still am as I type this now. But, thanks to one of my amazing clients, I was able to perk up a little because of some Super Sweet Surprises! Take a look:

gifte1gifte2gifte3gifte4gifte5

Because I was hurting so badly, my client and her family decided that it was the perfect day to give me my Christmas gift, even though it was fifteen days early! They treated me to:

  • A festive headband
  • Holiday nail files
  • Mini liquor bottles
  • Three sets of holiday earrings
  • Three sets of fuzzy socks infused with aloe
  • A gorgeous homemade scarf

When I first received my present, I was honestly just blown away by how cute the packaging itself was. My client’s mom showed it to me and said that I could take it home, but I had to put it under my tree and wait until Christmas day to open it. I begrudgingly said “okay” and had every intention of taking it home and (in)patiently waiting until December 25th to open it.

But, about a half hour before I had to leave, everyone insisted on me opening the gift to help cheer me up for the rest of my work day. It was one of the sweetest things that I’ve experienced in a good long while. Each gift that I opened was just as good as the last and I was so touched by their generosity. Giving me a holiday gift is something that I would never expect of any of my families so, when it happens, I feel so spoiled rotten.

The cherry on top of the prezzie tower ironically came from the bottom box – the divine scarf that my client’s mom crocheted for me. Her color palette was on point and the detailing was simply marvelous. I was so moved that she took the time to create such beauty for me and the kindness that was shown to me that day definitely made the rest of my work day wonderful, despite any pain that I was in. So, I would say that their mission was accomplished! ❤

Have you experienced any Super Sweet Surprises lately? What is your favorite kind of gift to home make? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Last Minute Holiday Gift Ideas

Standard
Last Minute Holiday Gift Ideas

Hiiii! There are less than ten days left until Christmas and that means that it is crunch time for all of the late holiday shoppers. If you haven’t finished your shopping yet, the anxiety definitely might be setting in, considering that most stores are well picked over by now and the shipping dates with online orders will be cutting it close. But, that doesn’t mean that you should throw in the towel just yet and hand over a card with cash to your giftee (Unless that’s what they really want!). So, here are some last minute gift ideas to help with your holiday shopping:

A Framed Photo:

Nothing is more sentimental and sweet than some of your favorite pictures of you and the giftee set in a beautiful frame. Purchase a photo collage frame or even make your own and give your loved one a reminder of your friendship and happy memories. This gift is well thought out, it’s easy to buy as most stores have frames to purchase and ways to print your photos, and it will surely be treasured by your giftee. Photos and memory books come highly recommended in this list for DIY holiday gifts for seniors but will be appreciated by anyone of any age as the memories are so special.

Add To Their Hobby:

So you’re in a bind to finish your shopping and your giftee has a hobby that they absolutely love. This is probably the best situation to be in, because that will make for a really simple purchase. Do they have a record player? Buy a few new records for them to jam to. How about a Polaroid camera? Get them some more film. Or maybe they love acting on stage? Grab them a few plays from the book store so they can discover a new monologue. Buying according to the hobby is a great way to go and it will always be well received because it’s so useful to the giftee.

The Basics:

We all know the standard Christmas gifts well. Booze, candles, fuzzy socks, knitwear, etc. But, they are staple prezzies for a reason, and are a fine way to go when you just need to finish up your shopping already. As an avid wine lover, there are some gorgeous bottles around this time of year with holiday sentiment on it, which will make for a lovely gift to enjoy during Christmas dinner. Throw in a few candles to light on the table and you’re done!

Family Fun:

Spending Christmas day with your family can seem like a daunting task for some, so maybe you can buy a gift that will spice things up a bit. Buy some fun classic or modern board games and have a tournament with your fam. Or maybe get some adult coloring books or art supplies and have a crafting contest. These gifts are wholesome and perfect for a day spent with your family – unless someone likes to cheat at Monopoly!

Sigh… Gift Cards:

Okay. You’ve been to every store and there is nothing left to purchase that’s even remotely close to what your giftee would want. You check all of the online sites and all of the shipping dates can only make it to your home in 2019. This is bleak, and it means that you might have to go for the gift card route. If you must use this option, make it a little adventure for the giftee. If you give them a card to their favorite clothing store, for example, tell them that you’ll come with and treat them to a coffee date beforehand for some pre-shopping fuel. Gift cards often lack any warm fuzzies behind them so add a little something something to make it a bit more special. 🙂

Christmas will be here ASAFP, so use the ideas above and, for the love of god, get your shopping done!

When did you finish your holiday shopping? How early into the year do you start your purchasing? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Gifts For Your Mom This Christmas

Standard
Gifts For Your Mom This Christmas

What do you buy the woman who brought you into this world? Most people will want to stay away from clichéd gifts, such as chocolates. These are somewhat predictable and just don’t seem enough for the wonder woman that is your mom. Yet, we don’t have a money tree in our garden allowing us to buy anything we lay our eyes on. So, what’s the solution? The following gift suggestions are sure to impress:

A watch:

When purchasing an accessory you want to go for something that is special, looks spectacular, and is going to get a lot of use. A watch ticks all of these boxes. You can find some great watches at abbottlyon.com. Look for a classic design and something that will go with any outfit your mom is wearing. Of course, you will need to consider her taste and her personality, as well.

An experience:

Instead of buying your mom an actual Christmas present, why not enjoy an experience together, instead? Is there a show your mom would like to see at the theater? Is there a restaurant she has been dying to try out? Or perhaps you think your mom could do with some pampering at a local spa? Experiences often mean more, because they give you the chance to spend some quality time with your mom. You are creating memories that can be cherished forever.

A box of treasures:

Another suggestion is to buy a box and fill it with treasures – AKA all of her favorite things. This could incorporate films, magazines, chocolate, wine, a pamper set, scented candles – anything that is going to provide your mom with a fun and relaxing evening. She is assured to love this gift as it shows that you have put in a lot of effort and really thought about her likes and dislikes.

A gadget:

Last but not least, why not introduce your mom to the wonderful world of technology? There are so many different gadgets available nowadays. A tablet is always a popular choice. She will be able to check her Facebook, play games, send emails, and read her favorite romance novels. Or, what about a Kindle? This is the perfect gift for anyone who loves to read. You could even buy her a machine so that she can make her own crafts. Head over to vinylcuttingmachineguide.com for some assistance with this. Aside from this, you may want to consider something music-related, such as an iPod. The options are endless.

If you select one of the suggestions mentioned in this blog post, you are assured to put a big smile on your mom’s face this Christmas Day. Make this Christmas one to remember for your mom, because a little bit of thought can go a long, long way!
