The Mixed Emotions Of Moving House

The Mixed Emotions Of Moving House

It is important to take a compassionate approach when moving to a new home. It’s not the easiest thing to do. In fact, it is well known as one of the most difficult and stressful things you can go through – and that’s even when you are looking forward to your new home! So how can we deal with your own emotions, as well as those of our nearest and dearest during the moving process? Read on to find out.

Stress: No matter what else you are feeling about your impending move, stress is likely to be featured on your radar somewhere. With all of the packing, cleaning, and organizing to be done, very few of us get away from it stress-free.

So how can we effectively manage our stress during a move and stop the process from being worse than it needs to be? First of all, it’s essential to be organized. Chucking things in bin liners the morning of the move is going to do nothing for your stress levels. Same with getting to your new home and having no clue where your mugs and coffee are. And spending three hours looking for your duvet before you can get into bed is not going to keep you calm. You need to know where everything is and how to get to it. Create check lists, label boxes clearly, and keep your boxes organized by what room they belong in to help keep yourself more organized.

The actual process of lugging boxes and transporting them can be exhausting and stressful, too. Especially when you have the major task of unpacking them all at the other end to look forward to. To help with this, you could employ professional furniture removalists. They can take the brunt of the heavy lifting while you conserve your energy for the trials ahead.

Sadness: It is not surprising that when moving, a lot of us can experience sadness. It can be hard to move out of a property that holds a lot of sentimental memories for us. It can be equally as difficult to take the plunge and move further away from loved ones and friends. Especially if you have built an amazing relationship with them over the years.

It can help to have a going away party so you can say goodbye to everyone in a formal way. This gives a sense of closure and celebration in moving onto the new and shows that you care as well as will stay in touch after the move.

Excitement: One of the most major emotions that a lot of people feel when moving is excitement. It can be thrilling to move to a new property and decorate it just they way you want. You might also get excited about making a fresh start, meeting new neighbours and friends, and sampling all that your new town or city has to offer.

It’s important to not get carried away, though. Doing too much when you first move can bring about exhaustion and additional stress. This is not the best way to start your new life. Also while you want to get going at putting down some roots, it’s often better to let friendships develop naturally over time.

Is Your Home Really As Clean As You Think?

Is Your Home Really As Clean As You Think?

We all know how important it is to ensure that our homes are as clean as possible. Cleaning gets rids of nasty germs and bacteria that can grow in problem areas such as the kitchen and bathroom. And once your home is free from bacteria and germs, you will find that your family won’t fall ill so often. Because of this, many families strive to keep their home as clean as possible. But are you really doing as good of a job as you think you might be? Here are some common parts of household cleanliness that many families overlook. Make sure you start focusing on these areas next time you clean the house.

Dust And Mites: In this modern age, many parents are working full-time and don’t have as much time as they would like to clean their houses. That means that dust has a lot longer to build up. Modern houses also have well-sealed windows, which are often closed when the central heating is on. This causes the air to turn stale in the rooms. Stale air alongside all that dust can encourage mites and other small bugs to gather in your rooms. The only way to prevent these insects from moving in is to keep on top of your dusting. It is also crucial to Get rid of the small bugs in your windowsill and air out your rooms as often as the weather will permit.

Clean Your Air: There are more reasons why you need to watch the quality of air in your rooms, as well. If someone in your family suffers from asthma or emphysema, then you will really need to make sure that the air in your home is as clean and pure as it can be. Otherwise, their symptoms could worsen. Stale air can also start to smell quite bad. So how do you clean air? It’s easy really; you just need to buy an air purifier. If you aren’t sure which one to get, you can take a look at review sites including Plenty Air.

Toilets And Toothbrushes: Now it’s time to take a look in your bathroom. Even though you may regularly clean your bathroom with lots of products, it could still be dirtier than you think. Especially the area around your toilet. Did you know that germs spread every time you flush your toilet? In fact, they can travel up to six feet in distance. I bet that’s more than what you thought! There is also another area in your bathroom that can be a breeding ground for germs. And that is your toothbrushes! To make sure they don’t get too dirty, you should keep them well away from your toilet. And make sure to replace them every three months.

Squeaky Clean!

Bed Bugs: When was the last time you inspected your mattress? Even if you change your bed linen regularly, your mattress could still be the perfect home for bedbugs. The only way you can prevent these little creepy crawlies from settling in your bed is to change your pillow every three years. Washing your bed linen in a boil wash every week will also help to prevent you from finding bed bugs in your bed. If you do notice a problem with these pests, it is so important to call in a bed bug exterminator immediately before the issue gets even worse. They will also provide you with the information to prevent the return of bed bugs so use it well.

*Lil Red Horror Story: A few years ago my BFF and I planned a trip to Niagara Falls. We were young and broke and was on the hunt for the cheapest motel humanly possible. We found one for a price that was too good to be true and about a day after booking our rooms my dad asked me if I read the reviews for the motel (No, I didn’t. Whoops!). Apparently, the reviews were consistently saying that the motel had bed bugs which explains their dirt cheap price! Long story short, the motel had a no refund policy and my mom had to call the place and claim that there was a “family emergency” to get said refund and not come home from Niagara Falls crawling with bed bugs! Yikes and yuck!

Ways To Wrap Your Mind Around New Technology

Ways To Wrap Your Mind Around New Technology

Technology is at the center of everything. With new developments happening every day, it can sometimes feel as though gadgets are taking over. But when things are advancing so fast, how can we keep up? As soon as you get the hang of one new gizmo, there’s another one to get to grips with. There’s no denying that technology has made a lot of things easier, but what do you do when you can’t get the hang of it? There’s no stopping the pace of technology but you can at least take steps to help you get to grip with things a little faster.

Instructional Videos: Presumably, the computer is one thing you are comfortable with. You found this blog post, after all! It may seem crazy to use one form of technology to help with another, but it’s a good tip. A computer can help you with an abundance of things. There is a wealth of information on the internet so it would be silly not to use it. Watching videos is a fantastic way to get the hang of new technology. There are videos on just about anything. Whether you’re struggling with a phone, a camera, or a microphone, there’s sure to be a video showing you how to use it. These videos are fantastic because they’re easy to follow and you can see the steps to take. You don’t have to worry about understanding instructions when you can watch (and rewatch!) somebody show you how.

Product Reviews: If you’re struggling with knowing which product is the right match, reviews could be a great help. It’s worth checking out thesmartcave. They have some fantastic product reviews that are sure to help you navigate the technological minefield. From phones to thermostats, they’ve got you covered. Reviews are excellent at laying out in simple terms what features a product has to offer. You don’t want all the fancy lingo and sales pitches. You just want an easy to understand lowdown of what a product can do! That’s exactly what reviews offer you.

Ask The Kids: This might sound strange, but it works! Kids are growing up in this technological age where there’s a new gadget for them to play with every week. And what’s more, they’re picking them all up extremely quickly. Kids approach technology in an entirely fearless way. Even better, they are fantastic at using it. If there’s something you’re struggling with and you know some technically minded kids, then don’t be afraid to ask for their help. A kid who started using a smartphone before they started walking will be able to set up your new Sat Nav with ease.

The trick is not to let technology overwhelm you. Even if the instruction manual makes no sense, don’t let yourself get disheartened. There is always an easier way. Use old technology to help you understand new technology. Alternatively, use those who have grown up using these confusing gadgets. Either way, persevere. With a little effort, you’ll be a technological whizz in no time!

Moving To A House In The Middle Of Nowhere: Everything You Need To Consider

Moving To A House In The Middle Of Nowhere: Everything You Need To Consider

There are a lot of draws for families when looking at a house which is in the middle of nowhere. For one thing, you are more likely to have a lot of land which is perfect for children. You could even create a den in the garden for somewhere to escape to in the evenings! And you don’t have to worry about annoying neighbors and the trouble they may cause. After all, you might be miles away from another property. However, before you make an offer, here is everything you need to consider about buying a house in the middle of nowhere.

Will it Take Forever to Get to Work? It’s so important to work out how far away your new property is from the primary locations you go to every day. One of the top ones is yours and your partner’s workplace. You don’t want to be miles away from work if you buy the new house. So work out the route and decide if it’s too far before you make an offer on the property. Also, you should be thinking about future possibilities when you move into a new home. You still want to be close to a city or town where you can go to work if you ever need a new job. As well as your workplace, you should consider how far away schools, doctors, and shops are from the house before making a purchase.

What Will Happen in an Emergency? If you have an emergency, you want to be able to get in touch with a contractor to come and help you as soon as possible. For example, if the power goes off after a storm, you need to be able to get someone to help quickly. You might want to look into local companies and ask them if they would make the distance in the emergency. If you do go ahead and buy the home, make sure you have all the resources you need in case someone can’t get to you straight away. For example, you might want to look into a backup energy generator to give you power until someone can come out. You can look online for diesel generator suppliers in your area. And also stock up on candles so that you can light your path in an emergency!

How Will You Keep Your Family Safe? Although there are lower crime rates if you live in the middle of nowhere, you still need to consider if it’s a safe place for your family. It might take ages for the police to get to your home in an emergency. You should make sure that if you do buy the property, you install a burglar alarm and CCTV at your home. You can even get the alarm connected to the police so that it alerts them if there is an issue!

Remember to consider the weather when deciding if you want a house in the middle of nowhere. After all, if there is snow, nobody might come down your road to salt it for you so that you can drive safely. Therefore, if you do make the purchase, make sure you plan ahead for all of the elements you may face!

Oops! Say Goodbye To Embarrassing Situations

Oops! Say Goodbye To Embarrassing Situations

One of my top five most embarrassing moments is actually compliments of lifewithlilred. I was interviewing a musician for an article and oh. my. goodness. he was gorgeous. I was typing out his answers on a Word document as he was replying and everything was going great…Until I accidentally deleted the entire six page document without saving it.

Thankfully, he was super cool about it and the article was still a-okay thanks to my really good memory (I hate to brag!). But, still. It was literally the most horrible accident that could happen in the situation and I was so embarrassed that I could barely sputter out “I’m sorry”. Not only that, but my face turned fifty shades of red that didn’t seem to go away even after he left! I was a sweaty, spazzy, beet-faced mess. Jeez…I’m getting flustered just thinking about it!

So, I totally get it. Embarrassing situations happen, some that are worse than others. But, if you know how to play it off, you’ll be able to handle your next oopsie like a pro.

Oops! Say Goodbye To Embarrassing Situations:

Being a human being can be really hard work. There are so many rules that we all have to follow and sometimes thing happen that are so embarrassing, we wish the floor could just swallow us whole. If you suffer at all from social anxiety then these horrendous occurrences are what keeps you from sleeping at night. But what you have to remember is that everyone suffers embarrassment. It happens to the best of us! Here are four pro tips for winning in an awkward situation.

  1. Burping in Public: This is the worst. Imagine you’re on a date with a guy  who you’ve been waiting for forever to ask you out. You enjoy pasta together and a couple of glasses of white wine. Just as you’re starting to take your flirting up a notch, you burp. Urgh! Ok, if this happens to you it’s important to remember that everyone does it (those who claim they don’t are lying!). Just cover your tracks and be honest with him – excuse your actions and try to laugh it off. If he’s a good guy then he’ll completely understand. A sense of humor is truly endearing.

*This is an occasion to not be like me and literally scream “EXCUSE ME” afterwards. I think it’s funny…my family and boyfriend? Not so much.*

  1. Food Stuck in Your Teeth: What is it about eating that ups the potential embarrassment factor by 100! Unless you are constantly checking a mirror then you won’t know if you have something in your teeth until you see it for yourself. If the people you’re with are feeling kind, they should tell you but if they don’t, that’s what public bathrooms are for! Excuse yourself after the meal, and double check your pearly whites in the mirror. Carrying some charcoal floss picks with you isn’t a bad idea, either (that’s what I do!).

But remember, it’s totally okay to just ask someone! There is nothing wrong or taboo about asking whomever you’re with about whether you have something stuck in your teeth. Just try to do it politely and subtly. I promise, it will be okay. 🙂

oops1.jpg

Don’t look at me!

  1. Getting Caught Short: Yeah, yeah laugh away but it can happen! Sometimes, it really is just a one time thing but other times it can actually be a medical issue. An overactive bladder can affect the best of us and if you are caught short it can be a nightmare. Coping with bladder incontinence is much easier if you make sure you have the right tools for the job. Make sure you’re always armed with your favorite panty liners and if things get really tricky, there are always adult briefs (better safe than sorry!) that you can buy. If you find you’re leaking more than normal make sure you take a trip to your friendly doctor who will be able to help you further.
  1. Forgetting Someone’s Name: We all lead busy lives and with social networking being so prominent, it’s easy to find yourself bombarded with names of people you barely know! If you’re in a social situation and you forget someone’s name (or you get their name wrong) then the easiest thing to do is just confront the problem and confess your error. Honestly, it’s sometimes easier and less awkward to admit you’re in the wrong and then laugh about it. I guarantee the person that you’re talking to has forgotten someone’s name before – they’ll completely understand. Make a joke about it!

*I forget people’s names frequently and I apologize in advance for it!*

What was one of your most embarrassing moments? What do you do to ease the embarrassment after an oopsie? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Why Finding The Time To Clean Your Home Properly Isn’t Really That Hard

Why Finding The Time To Clean Your Home Properly Isn’t Really That Hard

Do you ever feel like no matter what you do, nothing will ever be perfectly clean in your home? Or how about not having enough time to get everything nice and sparkly? If so, here are some tips to help you tidy up!

Why Finding The Time To Clean Your Home Properly Isn’t Really That Hard:

Cleaning is one of those jobs that never seem finished. It doesn’t matter how many times you do it, there is always something else that could be done. It can be hard to find the time in our lives to clean up to our own standards. But a clean and tidy environment is something everyone needs for a healthy and happy home. So how can we find time to clean even when we are busy working, raising our families, and having a life? Read on to find out:

10 Minutes: If there is a cleaning or organizational job that is getting to you and you just keep putting it off, why not try the 10-minute approach. It is so surprising how much you can get done in 10 minutes if you focus totally on the task in hand. You might even finish that job that looked like it could have taken you the better part of half an hour! But even if you don’t, once you have got started it is much more likely that you will keep on with the job. This is because you can see the progress that you made.

Even if you just can’t bear to do any more at that time, don’t worry. You have had a go and you can come back and do another 10 minutes later when you are feeling ready. This works particularly well if you have a large space to clean or if you have a cupboard full of junk that you need to clear out.

Automate: An important time-saving trick when cleaning is to automate as many jobs as possible. Using a dishwasher is an easy way to get those dishes from last night’s dinner party clean. Picking a certain time to load the dishwasher during the day is also a great idea, so you are not constantly washing up as you go along. Another clever way of automating a part of the cleaning is to get a robot hoover. They whizz around your home in the day when you are at work, hoovering up any dust and debris. Then your floors are kept clean and clear daily, all without you having to lift a finger. You can click here for info on robot hoovers.

Assign & Reward: Something that can help families of all shapes and sizes find enough time to keep the house clean is to assign some chores to the kids. Not only does this teach them a sense of responsibility but it also helps them feel that they are doing their part to contribute to the family. You may decide that they have to complete a certain number of chores to receive their weekly allowance. This will help them organize their own time and also show them the value of money as they have to earn it, instead of just being given it.

Routine: An additional time-saving tip for busy parents is to have a cleaning routine like this one here. Routines are used by professional cleaners to ensure that every aspect of the room that they are working on is clean and tidy to a sparkling standard. It can also help you keep focused and organized when doing the cleaning as you won’t get distracted by other tasks that are not on the list.

What is your least favorite chore to do? How about your favorite? (Mine is Swiffering!!) I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

The Tech We Simply Can’t Live Without

The Tech We Simply Can’t Live Without

In a world where it seems like there is a new iPhone coming out every other weekend, it can be hard to keep track of all of the latest amazing technology that is available. Here are some of the top “must haves” for the tech savvy 2016-er. Take a look:

The Tech We Simply Can’t Live Without:

Do you ever watch really old movies and wonder how on earth they survived without having a smartphone? It’s really hard to imagine needing only a roof over your head and a well in your garden! Life today can seem like a world away from how things were just thirty years ago, before the internet. But it’s not just our online lives that rely on tech. Our home life is pretty dependent on it too:

Smart TV: TVs have been around for decades, but these days, they need to be able to connect to the internet. After all, how would we access all our favorite shows through services like Netflix? Then, of course, are all those cute YouTube videos of kittens chasing laser lights and puppies falling over their tails. TVs are bigger than they’ve ever been, but how we use them has changed a lot over the years.

My family actually just recently indulged in a Smart TV and, I must say, it is fantastic. The convenience of being able to connect to Netflix with the literal touch of a button and binge watch your day away is heavenly. Our Smart TV came just at the right time – when I was binging on Breaking Bad. With the Smart TV handy, I was able to complete the entire series during my two week summer break from school/work. Impressive? Kind of. A little sad? TOTALLY! 😉

Smart Phone: A lot of tech is ‘smart’ these days, but none quite so smart as our humble mobile phone. Many of us have our entire lives on these little devices. Almost all of our communications are done on them, online and offline. You can work remotely, video call with friends on the other side of the world, and take photos for your blog. Apps like those at https://play.google.com/store/apps make it all happen. There are thousands to choose from. Being so dependent on these little babies can definitely make your stomach drop when you realize you left it at home!

Wireless Headphones: Cords and cables used to be everywhere. They were hanging out of the back of your TV. They were running riot from your modem. And they tethered you to your music player or phone. Now everything is wireless and that includes the headphones you use to listen to media and music. Websites like www.dextroaudio.com specialize in reviewing the latest models. You can get headphones, earbuds, and headsets to suit you.

GPS: Gone are the days of pulling over to the side of the road to unfold a paper map. No longer do we need to purchase a new map book publication every year. With GPS, everything is updated and accurate all the time. It knows where you are and where you’re going. It will verbally tell you all of the turns you need to take to get there, too. It’s like having the world’s best map reader with you for every journey you take. Of course, map reading skills aren’t quite what they used to be!

GPS is a Lil Red must have. I am the most directionally challenged gal on the planet. Thanks to no sense of direction, I am extremely dependent on my GPS. It is the best for helping me to get to different meet up areas with friends as well as assist me with the traveling that I do for my job. Thank goodness for it because I don’t think that I will be learning how to read a map any time soon!

Fitness Band: Whether you have a pedometer or just a band around your wrist, you know how many steps you’ve covered. There aren’t many people that leave them behind when they go for a long walk. Each of them hooks up to an app on your smartphone to detail your progress each day. Some will buzz you to remind you to get moving while others sit passively around your wrist fitting awkwardly in with your outfit. These things are the beginning of highly functional wearable tech. Are they just a fad, or the most essential tech in your life?

With new advances being made in technology daily, who knows what the newest tech must have will be? What is one piece of tech gear that you can’t live without? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

“Why Can’t I Quit You?” – Mistakes You’re Making When You Try To Break Bad Habits

“Why Can’t I Quit You?” – Mistakes You’re Making When You Try To Break Bad Habits

I feel like everyone has at least one or more bad habits. If you say you don’t you are probably a liar! From binging on three gallons of ice cream in bed to smoking a pack a day, we all do things that we are not necessarily proud of. But, if you are at a point in your life that you would like to quit some of these behaviors, here are some tips for you:

“Why Can’t I Quit You?” – Mistakes You’re Making When You Try To Break Bad Habits:

It’s somewhat comforting to know that we all have bad habits. None of us are perfect people, floating through life unencumbered by the things that might sway us from our perfect course. They are those little things we do that our friends might have once brought up, polite as can be, before telling us to knock it off! We know about them, yet we do them anyway.

It’s unlikely that you don’t know that some of these habits can be an issue. Most of us are acutely aware of our failings, even if we try to ignore them. We even go as far as to seek to justify them and explain that it’s okay that we do X because we don’t do Y. If we try to stop them, we come up against a roadblock.

With the time for New Year’s Resolutions creeping up on us at a frightening pace, try and do something differently this time. Rather than just stopping something because you know you need to, find out the obstacles in your way. That way, you can be prepared when the Facebook New Year’s posts clog up your newsfeed!

You’re Not Just Giving Up A Habit – You’re Gaining A New One: This sounds a little bit worrying, but it’s actually helpful so long as the substitute is a healthier one. Take the biggest, baddest habit of them all: smoking. When you stop smoking, you lose the time and energy you would have previously spent smoking. You now have a vacuum of time, and succeeding at quitting is going to be about finding a new habit to fill the gap. It’s the same for a simple thing like biting your nails. You do that when you’re stressed, right? So what are you going to do when you’re stressed now?

You have to find a habit to replace the one that you’re losing. For example, smokers may turn to vaping and nail biters buy stress balls. Places like Shoreditch Vape will give you a fresh start away from tobacco and can make it easier to ease into quitting. If you are buying a vape to help transition into quitting smoking, it is important to stick with that goal so you don’t end up going back to smoking again. Making sure that you use vape products that are actually enjoyable rather than a plain substitute for cigarettes can make a big difference. It is for this reason that choosing a brand that sets the standard for excellence in the world of vaping isn’t just a matter of taste and it can actually help to fight your addiction by helping you to forget the positive association you had with smoking and replace this instead with high quality vaping products.

One of the best ways to help cease your smoking habit is with nicotine free vapes. It will still provide you with the physical act of smoking sans the harmful additives. HealthVape’s Caffeine Vape could be an excellent alternative that comes in a variety of flavors with a formula blend of caffeine, Vitamin B12, and L-Theanine. If you are considering a nicotine free vape, read the customer reviews so you can choose the one that gave people the most success.

You Don’t Understand Physical Addiction: Few of us do something because we don’t like it; we have our habits as they meet our emotional needs. They make us feel better and when they do that, we get a rush of a chemical called dopamine into our brains. This chemical is linked with feelings of joy and happiness. So when we break our habits, the dopamine goes away. We don’t like that.

You may associate physical addiction with the likes of heroin and nicotine, but it applies to pretty much anything. Deny your brain its daily rush of dopamine and its not going to be happy about it. So when you’re struggling in the early phases, give yourself a break. You’ve got to retrain your brain chemistry.

You Don’t Give It Time: Most of us want to shed our bad habits and be done with them ASAP, but it doesn’t work like that. Research at University College London concluded it takes us 66 days to adopt a new habit – which is what you’re doing – as routine. So give yourself time and don’t try and rush it. Anything else and there’s a risk of expecting too much and suffering the subsequent disappointment when you fail.

Creating healthy habits and new routines can be very difficult if you are staying in the place where your addiction festers. If you are binge drinking a lot in your own home, for example, that can be a particularly tough habit to break. Should this be the case for you, you might want to consider a Drug & alcohol addiction treatment in Texas (Or anywhere you fancy!) to get a fresh start away from your usual stresses and triggers. A change in location is a simple idea but it really can be effective in creating good habits and coping skills.

I am the first to admit that I have bad habits. But the right knowledge, tools, and willingness to change can make breaking your bad habit a little more easy. What is one of your worst habits? Have you ever broken a bad habit before? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

^^^ Hurray! Hurray!

I am so very thankful for all of my fabulous readers located from all of the different ends of the earth and I feel so proud every time I look at my reader map. It used to hang on display in my room but unfortunately, the wire that runs across the back of the board snapped months ago and both my dad and I have yet to address it. Every time it gets brought up, the classic phrase “I’ll do it later” comes up but rest assured that it is propped up on a very special place on my floor. 😉

I hope everyone is having a great day so far! Stay tuned for some new posts coming from my vacation cabin in North Carolina! What is everyone up to this weekend? Any big plans? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah
