Last Minute Gifts When You’re In A Bind

Last Minute Gifts When You’re In A Bind

When life gets ahead of us thanks to a whirlwind schedule, gift purchasing can seem like the last thing on your mind. But, alas, birthdays and holidays still come and go, and gift buying is a necessary part of it. Whether you’re picking something up from a store or online shopping, last minute gift shopping isn’t always a bad thing – as long as you don’t make it glaringly obvious that you did, that is. Check out these tips for when you need to do the last minute gift hustle for your next get together:

Something Fast:

The first option to consider is one which is in place entirely for its speed. Amazon Prime Same Day delivery has started to cover a very wide range of products recently, opening the doors for those with phobias of the outside world to buy things without venturing out. And the best part of these services, is that you will often get your hands on the goods within hours of ordering them. This is perfect for when you have a bit of time at home before you need to present your gift. Of course, when it comes to Amazon, you can often choose to have items gift wrapped, too.

Something Personal:

There are plenty of personal gifts out there which you can give to someone and they will cherish it for a long time. That piece of jewelry or furniture they keep glancing at, for example, could be a great gift, and you don’t have to go and buy it. The odds are that you will own a good range of different items which could inherit heirloom status. Being passed down or across generations, items like these could stay with people you love for hundreds of years, and could even find themselves in the hands of great people down the line.

Avoiding The Physical:

When you’re in a rush, giving something physical may be a mistake. If they live too far away for you to visit, you will have to use the postal service to get their gift to them, and this could be a problem if you’re not careful. Avoiding this is simple, leaving you with loads of great options. For example, subscription services like Spotify, are becoming extremely popular. Giving you access to hundreds of gifts, looking down the digital route can be a great way to avoid missing the big day.

Professional Services:

Companies that are willing to bend over backwards to make you happy can be found everywhere. Professional services, like chocolate making and flower arrangement, are great when you’re looking for gifts for people you love. Companies like Camelback Flowershop have the skills and resources to be able to take and prepare custom orders to be delivered on the same day. Of course, this is based on location, and you will have to find a business close to you. Once you do, though, you will be able to start turning birthdays you miss or forget about into something very special. This sort of gift can be touching when you have it arrive for you.

Something Homemade:

Basing a gift on your hobbies is often a simple matter of putting yourself to work, and will only take a bit of effort once you get into it. Drawing, cooking, singing, and crafts are but a few examples of the choices you have here, giving you a huge range of different gift ideas to choose from. This is something that you will have to dedicate a lot of time to in the short window you have between remembering a birthday and seeing the person who is having it if you want to get it done in time. This will be hard to manage if you have a busy schedule to contend with, but the reaction of your loved one will be so worth it!

Printable Gifts:

If you own a printer, you have the makings for tons of easy gifts which most people will never try. Buying tickets to a musical performance, for example, will often give you the ability to print off the documents from home, rather than having to wait for them to come in the post. Using this sort of gift will give you the chance to choose something personal and well thought out, without having to have the time to spend on making it happen.

Last minute gift shopping can be totally stressful, so use this guide and breeze through your next occasion with ease!

Happy Birthday, Sister!!

Happy Birthday, Sister!!

Hello everyone and happy Sunday! Today is a wonderful, amazing, happy day because it is my beautiful big sister, Kristen’s, 26th birthday!! Kristen is literally my favorite person on the planet. She is so kind, so sweet, so funny, and so talented and I am lucky enough to be able to call her my sister and best friend. If it were up to me, and probably not to her, we would be doing everything together. So, needless to say, every minute that I get with her is very special.

I have so many fond memories with my sister. From her being my concert partner in crime to family vacations and movies and shopping, if it’s with her, then I enjoy it completely. Even just grabbing our favorite of Taco Bell and watching Netflix makes me beyond happy. Kristen is one of a kind and it makes me proud to brag about how cool she is constantly to anyone that will listen.

My best friend, my sister, and my literal everything turns 26 today. I’ve had 23 years with her and I can’t wait for a million more. Happy birthday, Kristen! ❤

Happy Birthday, Dad!

Hi everyone and TGIF! Today is a special day, because it’s my dad’s birthday!! My dad. The vacation planner extraordinaire, the man with the green thumb, and my favorite guy on the planet. One of my favorite daily activities is annoying my father, and knowing that deep down, despite my constant burping, singing, and dancing around is that he loves me like crazy. And I him, of course.

CHARLES is a really special guy and he has taught me all about enjoying the simple things in life. My dad is an amazing gardener and can seemingly make beautiful plants, flowers, and vegetables appear out of nothing. He also invests in his passion for wildlife watching every day by feeding the neighborhood birds and squirrels in our backyard. Watching my father tend to his craft daily is a constant reminder for me to take a step back and appreciate the beauty that surrounds my home that he created. Like I said, he’s a really special guy.

Although my dad doesn’t read my blog (As far as I know.), it wouldn’t be right to not wish him a happy birthday on lifewithlilred. So happy birthday, dad. I sure do love you! ❤

How Sports Parents Can Empower Their Kids

How Sports Parents Can Empower Their Kids

Whether you had a childhood love of sports that your kids are picking up or you simply want to see them succeed and grow in all that they do, it’s easy for parents to get emotionally involved in their kids’ teams and competitions. Parents have an important role in helping their child do the best they can, too. You just need to know the right ways to empower them:

Get Involved:

If you want your child to feel your support, then actually get involved in supporting the team. There’s usually a whole troop of parents helping with the organization and administration of school sports teams, from arranging trips to helping design uniforms. Volunteer your time, show up early to practice, and attend every game. If you’re net savvy, you can even offer to run a social media page for the team or, otherwise, share their posts and contribute feedback. Let your child feel the support for the whole team, not just the pressure on themselves.

Supporting the whole team is what being a sports parent is all about and can create a more positive experience for every player. Be the parent who brings snacks and a cooler full of sports drinks. Be the parent who is happy to carpool to practice. Be the support during a difficult loss and the one who gets the party started after a big win. Designing banners with a company like Milestone Banners (or a similar one in your local area) could be an awesome way to kick start a banquet or championship party. You could even raffle it off at the end of the season as a keepsake for a lucky team member or MVP.

Talk About It:

Knowing how your child actually feels about the sport and their own performance is just as important. It’s not uncommon for parents to fall into the trap of encouraging a child to succeed in a sport that they might not necessarily be into. Ask your child how they feel about practice, the team, and the responsibilities that come with a sport. Give them somewhere safe to vent their frustrations and share their concerns. Look at Active for Life for ideas on topics to broach if they’re having trouble opening up. Even if they love the game, they could use someone to talk to if they have suffered a loss or a roadblock during practice.

 Lace up!

Invest If They’re Invested:

Mental attitude and physical training aren’t all that can influence a game. If your child is serious about their sport, it helps if you are, too. Not just by supporting them, but by investing in the gear that can help them succeed. If they’re a goalkeeper, browse Renegade GK for more information on how the right gloves can improve their game. If they’re a member of a youth baseball league, make sure you’re looking for the best regulation bats on the market. The right equipment doesn’t just make changes to how they play the game. It’s an effective way of showing your support and belief in your child.

Don’t Push Too Hard:

Know when to step back and take a breath. When a member of the team makes a mistake or when a referee misses a call, it can be easy to feel your cool being tested. But by pushing too hard, you might only end up embarrassing your child and even prompting them to lose their love of the game. Support them, but don’t try and be their advocate every second during practice and matches. Talk to the coach if you have some thoughts, but don’t push and put too much pressure on them.

Being a sports parent is all about knowing your boundaries and knowing what you can do within them. Support, advise, and help, but be aware that you’re not the coach, the referee, or the player. Try to always keep things positive and constructive, and watch your athlete succeed.

Scarf Series: Knitted With Love Edition

Scarf Series: Knitted With Love Edition

Hi everyone and happy Hump Day! This is a special edition of my Scarf Series, because the one that I’m discussing today is one of a kind. My newest scarf was handmade by my mom! Despite my mom having no artistic talent in regards to drawing or painting, her creativity shines through in a different manner. She is an expert in her craft of bread baking and always uses the phrase “kneaded with love” so Knitted With Love only seemed like an appropriate title for this post. Take a look:

knitknit2

Literally no one in my family even knew that my mom knows how to knit until last month when she had a stay in the hospital. The lovely JANE decided that she would like to spend some of her time there knitting, so we took a trip to the absolutely darling Harps & Thistles Yarn Emporium to pick out some materials for her to work with.

At first, I was ambivalent about my mom making me a scarf, because I already have so many and my sister specifically said that she wanted one, so I wanted my mom to focus on that, instead. But then, my mom and I laid eyes on the gorgeous mustard yellow tweed yarn that you can see above. It was the perfect shabby chic, collegiate cool palette and my prior sentiments of “you don’t have to make me a scarf if you don’t want to” instantly turned to “can you PLEASE make me a scarf?!”.

While my mom was away, it was always so exciting to get a text or hear her say on video chat that she was working on my scarf. And when she finally returned home, which was amazing in itself, it was made even more special to see the fruits of her labor for her two girls with a rose pink and mustard yellow scarf. It hasn’t been cold enough in Ohio to wear scarves, any more (Which is great!), but I did get to wear my home made scarf one time and I loved every minute of it. I can’t wait to get more use of it next winter!!

What is your favorite craft to do? Did someone teach you how or were you self taught? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Happy Birthday, Mom!!

Happy Birthday, Mom!!

Hello! Today is a special day, because it is my beautiful, amazing, wonderful mother’s birthday. Saying that my mom is my best friend is a severe understatement. I don’t know what is better than a best friend, but that’s what she is. She is my confidant, my TJMaxx partner in crime, and my viewing buddy for Ellen DeGeneres, The Voice, and America’s Next Top Model.

Although my mom and I love being women on the go, I love being able to just hang out and enjoy our lunch or dinner together when one of us isn’t working. It’s such a treat to sit down and chat while sharing a meal or one of her to die for grilled cheeses on her homemade bread. YUM.

Through simple pleasures and sweet surprises, my mom brings so much joy to my life. I literally can’t look at her without smiling. Every day, my mom teaches me something new about physical and emotional fortitude, kindness, and just taking life one step at a time. Through both good days and bad, JANE radiates positivity wherever she goes, and I think that anyone can take a page out of that book.

To the best mom and friend in the world, we raise our Margarita glasses to you!

Happy Birthday, Mom! ❤

(And shout out to the man in the blue shirt on the far right who has no relation whatsoever to my family. Best photobomb ever.)

Who else is celebrating a birthday soon? What is one of your best birthday memories? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Movie Memories: The Devil Wears Prada

Movie Memories: The Devil Wears Prada

Hellooo! One of my all time favorite chick flicks is easily The Devil Wears Prada. Starring Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, and designer clothing – this movie never gets old. In fact, I have this condition where I have to watch TDWP every time it’s on TV – which is fairly frequently!

Last week, my mom and I were able to snuggle up and watch The Devil Wears Prada together and it brought back such a happy memory. When this movie first came out, my mom, sister, grandma, and I all went to see an afternoon showing at the theaters together. It was such a fun day with just us gals and I can remember so vividly laughing in the theater and discussing which outfits we wanted as we walked out with the credits rolling.

Every time I see even snippets of The Devil Wears Prada, my mind always goes back to that day and the joy of spending time together at a matinee. As my mom and I watched the movie a few days ago and had the same conversations of “I want that, that, and that” that we have every time, it was impossible not to think of us four girls walking arm and arm out of the theater and gabbing about the exact same thing.

My grandma has since passed away, but she will always be one of the most well dressed women that I have ever known. Of course, who wouldn’t want to emulate the style of post make over Andy and Emily in The Devil Wears Prada? But, if I can channel my grandma’s classic fashion sense in my daily looks, I think that I’ll be doing just fine!

Which movies bring back happy memories for you? What is one of your must watch movies whenever it airs on TV? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Party Inspo For The Best Birthday Bash!

Standard
Party Inspo For The Best Birthday Bash!

One of the best things that you can do in any year is to plan a party. Let’s face it, it may be a stressful time during the organization process, but the actual party always comes off beautifully, and your kids end up so happy, so the stressful bit is worth it! If you’re a standard Pinterest parent, then you’ll already have the app downloaded with several boards full of ideas for your next event.

Planning a party has a lot of different components, but the main thing to start with is the theme. You can’t hope to build the right party if you don’t have the right theme. Discuss with the birthday child what they would like, but if you have been told to surprise them, then you’ll need a little help. Check out our amazing party inspo below, then click on over to Pinterest to start building the right board. Don’t worry, all of these options work for both a birthday boy and a birthday girl!

Magic:

Who doesn’t love a magic party?! Think about it, you could hire in a magician to entertain the children, offer fancy dress options for magical beings, and you could even serve a cake like this, where a bunny is popping out of a top hat. Make sure that you include glitter pots in the party bags, along with fuzzy bunny ears, and a wand of their very own.

One important aspect that should not be overlooked is the magician’s stage. It should have a dramatic impact and their magic show should stand out. Consider getting a rainbow balloon arch over a small platform, to make it feel like a real magic show. Another consideration is to plan the party with the magician to discuss how to make it as interactive as possible; this way, all the kids will be super excited and feel included in the festivities.

I want him at my next party!

Art:

An artsy party is a craft lovers dream. It can be a messy theme, but it’s one that is going to entertain kids for ages and they won’t forget it. Make this one a summer party, and you could pin large pieces of cardboard to the washing line and get the kids to flick paint on them in neon colors. Make biscuit palettes with icing paint to finish the look.

Sports:

Having a sports mad child makes for a very easy party theme. You can get USA baseball bats here as a birthday gift, and when it comes to the party treats, why not specify a baseball theme with baseball cake pops? Gift bags will also be easy peasy, as you can make them personalized to the sport of choice.

inspo2

Yum!

Circus:

You can go as big as you like with a circus theme; so if you’ve got the cash, you can definitely pull out all of the fun fair stops. You could go a little more moderate by hiring a clown or balloon animal maker and you could serve up hot dogs, popcorn, and cotton candy during the party, with an amazing circus tent cake to blow everyone away.

Your birthday party theme is going to be individual for your child, but you can really go all out with the effort that you put into it. Make sure that you give plenty of notice to your guests so that they can be there to enjoy the day. Party planning is so much fun, and it’s time to begin!

Accessory Story: Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, And Something Blue Edition

Accessory Story: Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, And Something Blue Edition

Howdy! Does anyone have an accessory that they wear every day? Maybe it’s your favorite bracelet, the earrings that you never take out, or the anklet that’s too difficult to bother taking off. I actually have four bracelets that I wear every day, compliments of my beloved mom and the beautiful Kate of Ankhor You.

Back in October, you might remember that I spent some time in New York City for the first annual Bloggers Conference between me and Kate. Once I was there, it was fabulous. But, I’ll tell ya what, getting there was a bit of a struggle. I had never traveled alone before and, needless to say, I was freaking the fuck out lol. But, in true mom fashion, my darling JANE always knew just what to say and do to calm me down. She let me pick out one of her pieces of jewelry so it was like she was with me on the trip. It was

SO SWEET

And I ended up selecting the following bracelet set from my mom:

bracelet2

By the time I arrived home from my NYC extravaganza, I was too attached to the bracelets to give them back and asked my mom if I could keep them. Obviously, she said yes, because I have been wearing them every day since my trip. The bracelets are kind of falling apart now and beads are falling off. But, I plan on wearing them until every single bead is gone. ❤

These bracelets are old, blue, and technically borrowed – so what’s the new one? This here Alex and Ani bracelet from the beautiful Kate, of course:

bracelet1

This gorgeous Harry Potter themed bracelet was a Christmas surprise from Kate, and I have been wearing it every day since it arrived in the mail. This is my first Alex And Ani bracelet and it couldn’t be more perfect. The theme, the sentiment behind it, the element of surprise from a package in the mail from NYC. I get emotional just thinking about it!!! :*)

When these bracelets combine, I have something old, new, borrowed, and blue and my day wouldn’t feel complete without having them on my wrist. So special thanks to my mom and my darling Kate for gifting me with something that makes me smile every day. I LOVE YOU!!! ❤

Do you own anything that fits the old, new, borrowed, and blue guidelines? Do you have a piece of jewelry that you wear daily or don’t take off? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah
