Carl Sandburg Home

Carl Sandburg Home

Hi! During my family vacation, we visited the incomparable Carl Sandburg Home. Although we didn’t go inside the house itself, exploring the gorgeous property and playing with goats (Yes, goats!) was more than good enough for us! During our time at the Carl Sandburg estate, we learned a lot about the great American poet and, even though I wasn’t familiar with his work before, this might have been my favorite part of our trip. Take a look at some pics and let’s discuss:

So, how did I get up close and personal enough with a field full of goats to be able to take a selfie with one of them, you might ask? Well, these goats are direct descendants from the ones that Carl’s wife, Lilian, raised until her passing. All of the goats are handled by humans as soon as they’re born, so they’re incredibly friendly and love having visitors. Each goat has his or her own name, which you can see on their collars, and they are all so tame that you can approach and handle them without any fuss. It. Was. AMAZING!

And, of course, the property was spectacular, too. The foliage was beautiful, the walking trail was pleasant to stroll through, and all of the homes on the estate for Sandburg’s family looked so quaint and charming. We spent a good few hours at the Carl Sandburg Home and I honestly would have been happy spending an entire day there! The scenery and especially the goats stole the show and I would love to go back. 12/10 Would recommend visiting if you are in the area.

What is your favorite animal? Who is your favorite poet? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Sky Top Apple Orchard

Sky Top Apple Orchard

Howdy! When my family vacations in North Carolina, we always go apple picking. This time around, we visited Sky Top orchard. And an appropriate name it is, indeed, because it’s at the very top of a mountain! Unfortunately, we came at a bad time, because a huge school field trip was just finishing up, so the trees were pretty much picked clean. But, we still managed to get a basket full of delicious Pink Lady, Cameo, Honey Crisp, and Fuji apples. Take a look at some pics and let’s discuss:

Although I had a lot of fun at the orchard with my family and the caterpillar friend I made along the way, I preferred other orchards that we visited over Sky Top. Because of the mountainous terrain, exploring the massive property was anything but pleasant. The hills were incredibly steep and the orchard didn’t seem to be very well maintained. Along every row of apple trees, the ground was completely littered with rotten fruit and flies, bees, and ants were swarming all over. I absolutely understand that an orchard isn’t going to be totally pristine, but you literally couldn’t step anywhere without a rotten apple squishing beneath your feet and bugs flying on and around you. Gross.

Having said all of that, their market area was really cute and clean. And, an entire bucket of apples to pick was only twenty dollars, which was a great value. It was nice to visit a different orchard in North Carolina but, next time that we go, I hope that we stick to Stepp’s Hillcrest Orchard, which was scenic (without being mountainous) and well maintained outdoors and in their market.

Who else loves going apple picking in the fall? What is your favorite type of apple? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Triple Falls Hike

Triple Falls Hike

Hello! During my family vacation to Hendersonville, North Carolina we enjoyed several of the amazing hiking trails in the vicinity. In fact, one of the trails that we went to was so amazing that some of The Hunger Games was filmed there! Walking the trail to get to the Triple Falls was intense, as there were a lot of hills to go up and down. But, seeing the majestic waterfalls once we reached our final destination made the infinite inclines well worth it (And, my gloots are thanking me!). Take a look at some of the pics that I snapped and let’s discuss:

I’m not gonna lie, I was definitely pretending to be Katniss during the entire hike and it was exhilarating to unleash my inner badass. We only hiked the Triple Falls trail, but throughout the walk, there were places where you could break away that would take you to other waterfalls. In my opinion, nothing could compare to the three spectacular falls flowing into each other. Hearing the rushing water, being enveloped by the mist, and feeling the gentle spray of the water was such a delight to all of the senses. And, although we were all sore by the time we got back to the car, I think that we would all do the hike again in a heartbeat!

What is your favorite adventure movie? What is your favorite trail to hike in the fall? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

NC Scenery

NC Scenery

Hi everyone and happy weekend! For the past week, my family enjoyed a vacation in Hendersonville, North Carolina. A fun time was had by all and it was so nice to share in the beautiful scenery of the mountains with amazing company. On one of our excursions, we hiked at a trail called Catawba Falls and were treated to a glorious view of several smaller waterfalls flowing into each other at the top. We were also the recipients of some wildly muddy shoes and jeans compliments of Hurricane Michael! Take a look:

A moderate hike on a good day, this trail was actually fairly difficult when we were there, because of the intense rain that North Carolina got the week before. So, the mostly upward trail was really muddy, which led to some slipping, sliding, and very dirty shoes! There is nothing better than being amongst nature and hearing the flowing water from the falls joining you with every step, though, and the mud and gunk was just a small price to pay for that.

After our hike, a cold treat was definitely in order and we stopped for a shaved ice at Pelican’s before heading back to our cabin. Try not to drool at all this deliciousness:

With over one hundred flavors to choose from at Pelican’s, the possibilities were literally endless. And, unfortunately for me, every flavor sounded fantastic! So, I just had to pick one and go with it and went for French Vanilla Cola because after the hike, I wanted nothing more than an ice cold Diet Coke. The shaved ice was a fine substitute, but ordering a large size was a total mistake because of the classic case of “eyes being bigger than your stomach”. If you’re in the area and stop by Pelican’s, just know that you will be more than okay with the kiddie size! 😀

Where was the location of your last family vacation? What is your favorite hiking trail in your neck of the woods? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Celebrating Mabon

Celebrating Mabon

Hello! Today, we are going to hear a little something from my darling friend, Carlie, over at Bombshell on Celebrating Mabon. As you will read in this post, Mabon is a Pagan nature holiday that gives thanks to all things fall and it’s something that Carlie enjoys participating in. Carlie will also be back later on this month with more fall and Halloween fun so definitely keep it posted, because she’s awesome! ❤

mabon1

Autumn is my favorite time of year for many reasons. The weather starts to get cooler, I love seeing the leaves changing beautiful colors, Halloween aka Samhain, and celebrating “Mabon”. Like Samhain, Mabon is a Pagan nature based holiday that represents the beginning of the Autumnal Equinox. It also signifies the second harvest of the calendar and promotes equality and balance. It’s a very positive time of the year where a lot of people celebrate the changing of the seasons, create their own little traditions, and enjoy nature of course. I hope you all are looking forward to the beginning of Autumn/Mabon as much as I am. This year the Autumn Equinox begins Friday, September 21st. And, if you want to celebrate Mabon in any way, it goes from September 21st to Saturday, September 29th!

How do you welcome the fall season? What is your favorite fall tradition? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

How To Revamp A Boring Backyard

How To Revamp A Boring Backyard

With summer still going strong, we all want to spend as much time as possible outside. This means that you need to take the necessary measures to revamp your backyard. In the past, the backyard was a space for hanging laundry to dry and a playground for the kids. Nowadays, it is one of the top three areas that need to be renovated to improve the value of your property as well as your lifestyle. Here are some ideas that will help you to give your backyard the boost it needs:

Remodel Your Deck:

You need to remodel your deck if you want your backyard to look tasteful. An outdoor deck will benefit almost any home, whether you use it for entertainment or as a retreat. According to Deck Remodelers, an up-to-date deck will raise the value of your property significantly, which means that you should remodel yours if you are looking to sell your property in the future.

revamp1

Lush Greenery:

Your backyard should be a bright, inviting space where you can play with the kiddos or chill with friends. Liven things up with beautiful blooms, a veggie garden, or maybe even a few fruit trees. Remember, the secret to picture book perfect grass is adequate hydration. For this reason, you might want to consider having an irrigation system installed to keep your grass healthy and looking its best. A well maintained yard is an instant curb appeal booster!

If you struggle to maintain your yard, a lawn service can be invaluable. This is especially great for older folks or people with no green thumb whatsoever! If you are interested in help for your yard, simply search online for a “lawn service Abilene TX” (or your local area) to find a team of pros to keep the outside of your property looking its best.

Add a Fire Pit:

If you want a space where you and your family members can cook and bond, you should add a fire pit to your backyard. You can use a shovel to dig a hole, then line its outer edge to make the fire pit look better. However, if you do not want to dig into your yard, you should buy a metal fire pit that will allow you to burn wood for your bonfire. Portable fire pits like the ones from Go Live Outdoor could also be a great option as you can move it anywhere on your property or even bring it on a camping trip!

Add Lawn Accents and Decorations:

You should opt for accents and decorations that will show off your personal style, such as ceramic animals and an outdoor gas lantern. You can also add wind chimes to tree branches if you want to include an element of music to your backyard. For some nighttime fun, you can place tiki torches to your newly renovated deck.

Cut Around Stones with an Edge Trimmer:

You should use an edge trimmer to cut the grass around stone pathways or walkways to end up with flat edges on your lawn that are uniform in size. To trim, you just have to place your edge trimmer on the side of the walkway before you start pushing it forward slowly. Just make sure that you keep your edge trimmer at the same height all the way to ensure uniformity.

Dive In:

There is no way you will have a boring backyard when you find a team of local professionals for inground pool installation. A swimming pool is synonymous with fun whether you’re taking a dip with your family or hosting a huge pool party. Prior to your installation, be sure to address any requirements from the city that might be needed as a lot of locations require your pool to be fenced in for safety. Dive in and have a blast!

Place Lawn Furniture in Your Backyard:

You should place several pieces of furniture in your backyard to create a calm and inviting atmosphere where people can talk and relax. You will find a wide range of lawn furniture at garden stores and lawn stores, including swings, chairs, and tables. If you have enough space, you should consider adding a retractable pergola system – a roofed structure that gives you an outdoor room and allows you to sit in the backyard on rainy and sunny days no bugs required!

Add a Water Fountain:

You should consider installing a small water fountain next to your flowerbed. This will add some ambient water noises that will have a calming effect on you. If you have the funds, you could hire a company to create a full water fountain in your backyard. You will have many water-feature choices to pick from, so your personal style will not be sacrificed.

If you are thinking about revamping your backyard, the above ideas will help you to get started. An updated backyard will not only increase the value of your home, but it will also make your outdoor space more appealing and fun to spend time in with family and friends.

Hi hi everyone and a happy Thursday to all of you! If you follow my page, then you know that my beloved dad, CHARLES, is a gardening extraordinaire. He can literally make something grow out of nothing, and every year the splendor in our front and back yards multiples tenfold from his hard work and amazing talent.

Not only does my dad boast two green thumbs, but he has also gotten quite good at using his camera and enjoys taking pictures of his handy work and the wildlife that basks in its glory. I love featuring talent on my page, and it’s even more special when something so beautiful comes from a family member or close friend. So, without further ado, take a look at some Backyard Beauty compliments of my dad:

It always touches me so deeply when my dad wants to share one of the photos that he was proud of taking with me, and it makes me even more proud to show them off to all of you! I love you, dad! Your talent knows no bounds! ❤

Lovely Lavender

Lovely Lavender

Howdy! Despite 75% of the weather that Ohio experienced this spring being crappy, the flowers and greenery have all been magnificent. One of the crowning jewels of our yard, and something that my dad is particularly proud of, is his lavender bush. CHARLES planted his lavender when it was just a tiny sprig years ago. And, this year, it really is at its biggest and most beautiful. Take a look:

lavender2lavender1mothers1

Our ginormous lavender bush, that looks more like a tree now, stands by our back deck and envelopes it in a simply gorgeous aroma. It provides the perfect amount of shade from the hot sun to make reading on the deck more pleasant, and it makes sitting underneath its blossoms feel like you are in your own secret garden.

It’s so crazy how something that was barely a foot high a handful of years ago erupted into such a magnificent focal point in our garden. This lavender bush/tree really showcases my dad’s green thumb and it makes me proud to have it as a main feature in our yard.

Is anyone currently preparing a flower or vegetable garden? What are you growing? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Adorable Garden Decor

Adorable Garden Decor

Hi! As you all can tell, I am loving all outdoor everything right now. Part of what comes with that is being friggen OBSESSED with Adorable Garden Decor. This includes garden gnomes, bird baths, wind chimes, pinwheels, the works. But, my favorite outdoor decor as of late has been anything solar powered. I have seen lovely flowers that turn into glowing blooms at night and bird baths that looks like the imaginings of fairy tales once it gets dark out.

At my home, we go for the simpler route and have our front area illuminated by one solar paneled lantern – and it looks awesome! Take a look:

lanternlantern1

I don’t know what it is about this outdoor decor that I love so much. It just looks so sweet to me – like something that should be in a picture book. At night, the lantern is surprisingly bright thanks to being hit by the sun’s rays all day. And, during the day time, it looks cheery and fun because of the chubby little gnome holding his butterfly balloon. It’s two completely different looks as the day transitions to night and I think that they both look great. 😀

Whether one’s outdoor decor is simple or something big and elaborate, it makes me smile all the same! How do you like to decorate your garden? Do you have any solar powered decor in your yard? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah
