Decorating the home is an exciting time. You get to turn a new leaf on the parts of the home that you don’t like. And, with the bits you do like, you can refresh them and make them look new again. But, despite most people’s love for beautiful rooms, most struggle to find colors that suit their space and style. This means that loads of people end up with rooms that they don’t like, even after redecorating. So, to help you out, this post will be going through the importance of color in the home and how you should go about choosing them.

Room Size: Color can have a great impact on a room. It can change the feel, mood, and even the size of a room. And, size is something that you have to consider. Some rooms feel far too big, even when they’re filled with furniture. Whereas, some rooms feel tiny, with no room at all. This needs to be a consideration. Different colors can have different effects on how we perceive the size of a room. For example, a small room would benefit from lighter colors, which make it feel more open. But, huge rooms are better with darker shades, to make them feel a little cozier. Of course, you’re not actually changing the size of the room. Color can just have the effect of doing so. Dark colors absorb more light than lighter ones, which reflect it. This makes a room darker, making it feel smaller. When a room is lighter, it feels more open and large.

Boring, Interesting, or Ugly! Once you’ve figured out the shade you’d like for your room, you have to figure out a balance. It’s easy to have too little color in a room, making it look boring. Likewise, you can also have too much going on, making the room look ugly. But, you want the house to be interesting – somewhere right in the middle. Doing this can be hard. So, it’s usually best to get the help of a professional. Having a painter give you their opinion on the room ideas you have is a great way to start. They see loads of rooms and they know what looks good. They will also be able to help you to complete the job. And, using a professional for painting will almost always have a better result.

Choosing Well: Choosing the colors for your home is completely down to you but rooms shouldn’t have more than one vibrant color as a rule of thumb. Neutral colors can be played with a little more. But, it’s usually best to be conservative with what you choose. Use guides online to choose colors that fit with moods. For example, if you wanted a relaxing room, you could choose yellow as the main color. This sort of method will always see that you choose something that you love.

Hopefully, this will inspire you to start making changes when it comes to the decor in your home. It can be hard to make decisions like this. It takes a lot of work, and you have to be confident in your choices before you start the job. But, once it’s all done, you’ll feel much happier in your home!

Some things you can do yourself or you could get a professional to help you out. Before you throw out that sofa or cabinet, here’s what you could do to save it:

Start By Giving It a Clean: The first thing you should do with a tired piece of furniture is to clean it. You could be amazed by how much of a difference it makes. Furniture made from wood, metal, or plastic can be very easy to clean. You only need to dust or wipe it down, perhaps with some soapy water or special cleaning solution. But upholstered fabric can be a little trickier to get clean. Some pieces have removable covers that you can put in your washing machine. You might also want to consider an upholstery steam cleaner, which will make it easier to get the fabric clean.

Reupholster Fabric Furniture: Some upholstered furniture might still look rough after you clean it. Perhaps there are holes or tears in the fabric or it has just become very worn down. You don’t need to throw it out, though. You still have a chance to rescue it by reupholstering it. You can replace the fabric with something similar or give it a completely new look. This is a job you could attempt to do yourself. However, if you’re unsure about it, it’s just as easy to get a professional to do it for you. Repair Wood: Wooden furniture can end up with lots of little blemishes in its daily use. You might notice scratches, stains, or cracks in the varnish. Oil and vinegar can help to remove stains, while sandpaper and nail polish can help you repair varnish. Be a Rebel: 7 Small Space Decor Rules That Are Worth Breaking

A famous American author Theresa Anne Fowler once wrote that “some rules are nothing but old habits that people are afraid to change”. And boy, was she right. People would rather obey conventional wisdoms than take the risk of creating something different. This is especially true when it comes to decorating small rooms, which are labelled as “difficult” to design. Still, is painting the walls white always a good way to decorate a tiny space? Of course not. There is no one universal solution that works for all small rooms. Here are some decorating rules that could benefit from a little rebellion.

Paint It White:

This must be the most boring interior design rule out there. Why must we paint a small room white? White does contribute to the illusion of spaciousness, but so does beige, sand, and other light neutrals. Or, if you prefer style over size, you can always go with bold deep shades.

Darker colors can be used to accentuate certain architectural features (e.g. built-in wall shelves) or simply to provoke visual interest. When painting a small room with darker hues, go with a glossy, instead of matte finish, because it can reflect light making the space appear bigger.

Keep the Knick-Knacks at a Minimum:

If you followed every conservative décor rule, you would leave your favorite vase, your travel souvenirs, and all of your lovable knick-knacks in the attic, since you wouldn’t display them in your small room. But, if you ignore the naysayers, you will fill your room with charming accessories which will turn an ordinary space into a home.

Avoid Large Scale Patterns:

“Sure, you can use patterns in a small room, but only teeny-tiny polka dots.” Forget all about that and go with bold patterns. Go back to the ‘80s and revive the popular trend of flame stitch patterns or vivid floral motifs. Introduce patterns with wallpaper, upholstery, drapes, rugs, and accessories such as throw pillows, tablecloths, etc.

Stay Away from Large Furniture:

Your small room doesn’t have to look like a Barbie’s house. Small furniture in a small room can only hurt its functionality and comfort. Sometimes it is better to rely on your sense of design and decoration instead of sticking to some preset rules. One large bulky piece of furniture can make a room more inviting and open. If you are planning to include such a piece, opt for a sitting item, such as a sectional sofa.

Heavy Drapes Are a Big No-No:

One of the most common misconceptions about interior design is that bare windows make a space look bigger. Bare windows might work in some cases, especially when the view is great, but not always. Contrary to the popular opinion, heavy drapes, especially when hung very close to the ceiling, can make the room look taller thus making it visually more spacious.

Compromise on Dining Area:

An open-space concept in a small apartment means that some things have to be left out. The most common choice is the dining table. It is more often than not reduced to a kitchen island with chairs or a foldable table in some corner. It doesn’t have to be like that. You don’t have to go with a full-blown 12-seat table, but you can downsize it to 4 seats. Then, you can still host your friends and family comfortably for dinner and drinks.

Go with Matchy-Matchy:

Introducing matching patterns and colors is one of the basic rules of interior design, and it is especially used in small spaces to avoid overwhelming them with too much stuff. Go against this rule and don’t coordinate colors and patterns, and you’ll get a fun and interesting result. However, be careful not to overdo it, this rule is here for a reason. Try to display colors and patterns in pairs (e.g. two striped cushions + two green candles).

Stop sacrificing the personality of your small room just to create an illusion of a few extra square inches. When you go for a rebellious design approach – the sky is your limit.

Another year’s drawing to an end, and while most homeowners are busy putting up Christmas decorations and making plans for the holiday ahead, interior designers already have their eyes locked on the trends that will mark the season to come. In 2016, we’ve seen a rise of the open-plan living, gentle blends of rose and gold touches, mix-and-match decors, eclectic traveler and boho chic aesthetics, 3D gallery walls, and other suave home features, some of which will stay in vogue in 2017. Nevertheless, in addition to the trending features, the year to come will bring along a few new design tendencies to help house-proud homeowners dial up the visual game in their nests. Here are five of the biggest trends we’ll be seeing more of in the year to come:

1. Upholstered Headboards for Snug Dreams:

Upholstered headboards entered the home decor scene through the back door in the past few years, infusing chic bedrooms with an extra dose of interest and comfort. The popularity of cute tufted headboards will persist in 2017, pushing minimalist timber bed frames out of style.

This is such a simple way to add a dose of glamour and elegance to the bedroom. Upholstered bed frames will rock neutral hues, dramatic buttons, and sumptuous fabrics such as velvet or plush for vintage aesthetics and first-rate comfort.

At the same time, rattan, bamboo, leather, and fur will conquer suave living areas, instilling the modern home with a dose of style au naturale.

3. A Nod to Bygone Eras and Dreamy Designs:

In 2017, vintage, shabby chic, and boho interiors will remain on trend, but they’ll be joined by a few more time-honored designs, such as mid-century modern, Victorian, and classic décor. For a touch of old-school charisma, you can update the living room following in retro footsteps, and if you want to tweak the bedroom to get the biggest stylistic bang for your buck, you may want to check this out and use expert cues to dial up the boudoir visuals and overall home aesthetics.

5. Stainless Steel for a Dose of Stylistic Chill:

Although the focus of designers’ attention in the year to come will rest on mix-and-match decor formulas and creative reinterpretations of classic designs, modern materials will still have their rightful place in a 2017 home. Stainless steel and original combinations of metallic surfaces such as bronze, brass, copper, wrought iron, and brushed aluminum will help define a well-grounded framework for textural and tonal experiments. A subtle way to add a note of contemporary chill to top-notch homes, stainless steel and metal finishes will help maintain aesthetic balance and keep the visual scale snugly secured halfway between vintage fluff and 21st-century industrial.

Other up-and-coming trends we can expect to see in the year ahead include a growing affection for natural fiber and coarse textiles, the return of farmhouse and country style, the rise of luxury furnishings and retro-inspired pieces such as mantelpieces, fire pits, all-wood deck furniture, and a slow comeback of the traditional closed room layout.

Sometimes, it can be easy to let your home settle into feeling just a little bit plain. There’s nothing strictly “wrong” with it; it just seems sort of lifeless. As though the house just seems to fade into the background without having much personality of its own. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but sometimes you want to bring your home to life in a more vibrant way.

One of the biggest things that can cause a home to feel a bit bland is that everything about it feels rather safe. A home that’s exclusively filled with neutral colors or typical arrangements is going to do perfectly well but isn’t really going to wow anyone. If you want to create a little more excitement in your home then it’s time to start taking risks! Here are three daring design choices that you can implement into your home:

Contrasting Colors: Far too many people fall into the same trap of filling their homes with plain, neutral colors. Now this can sometimes be a great design choice. After all, it offers you a blank canvas to work from when you’re decorating. But if you’re not complimenting your color scheme with vibrant decorations, then you run the risk of everything looking boring and washed out.

Instead, why not create some real contrast in your rooms by using some bright colors. One of the best places to use colors like this in on your ceiling. Most people tend to ignore the ceiling and focus on the walls, but plain walls with a bright colored ceiling can create a wonderfully vibrant atmosphere without sacrificing the light quality in the room.

Go Industrial: This might not be for everyone, but there’s something to be said for peeling away the very neat and cozy interior of a lot of houses and bringing a slightly more industrial quality to your home. Plenty of places can benefit from the unique charm that something like exposed brickwork or concrete flooring can create. Concrete floors with a well-styled rug can create a room that has some serious visual interest from any angle. And if your home is well heated and insulated, then you’re not going to have to worry about losing any heat through the exposed brick. The contrast of the stark concrete or brick with the soft furnishings of your home will create a unique aesthetic that guests are sure to love.

Patterns Are Your Friend: A lot of people tend to steer clear of patterns as a general rule. That’s because if you make the wrong choice of patterns, it can leave a room feeling cluttered and confusing. But, if you choose something bold and simple, thick horizontal stripes or simple tessellating shapes work wonders, then you’ll be amazed at just how much life you can bring into your home. It helps to give a room a sense of shape and focus and can help to influence the way that everything is arranged, both in terms of furniture and decoration.

Live Well And Be Happy! Bringing Luxury Into Your Living Room

In this day and age, it’s important to try to live well. Of course, it’s just as important to live within your means so you don’t have any financial problems or get into any debt, but equally, if you have the cash, it’s important to try to enjoy it with a little luxury in your everyday life. Maybe you do that by using high quality toiletries – there’s nothing like hand soap that moisturizes as well as cleans. Or maybe you like to check out the occasional high priced restaurant in the city where you live. No matter what your vice is, though, we all have a home – and we all like for it to look good. Here are some luxurious touches you can add to your living room for a dose of comfort and glam:

A New Couch: First things first: do you need a new couch? If yours is starting to make protesting, grumbling noises and creaks every time you get up, then it’s probably time to go for a new couch – for example, check out the Duresta sofas and chairs. You want to make sure that you get a couch that looks good but that you can curl up on during the long winter evenings. And speaking of that…

Comfortable Throws: What’s the point of a couch if you don’t have a throw to snuggle up beneath? Of course you’ll need soft pillows too, but the throws are really where it’s at. If you’re feeling decadent, you could go for fake fur so you can imagine you’re on Game Of Thrones as you watch it on TV. And seriously, who doesn’t want that?

Surround Sound: If you enjoy watching TV, then go for some new speakers and surround sound. It might not be great to feel like you’re in the aforementioned Game Of Thrones – what if you die? They all seem to die a lot – but as a general rule, better sound is always good for your TV and to enhance your viewing experience. Blackout Blinds: If you don’t have blackout blinds in all of your rooms, it’s time to invest in some. Make sure you keep them pulled back during the day so they let some daylight and heat into the room, but at night you can draw them. Not only does this mean you won’t have to deal with any creepy reflections late at night, but it’ll also keep the heat in, meaning your heating bill will go down. But mainly creepy reflections – Yikes!

 Make sure you give your plants some light!

Add Some Art: If you’re into art, your living room is the perfect place to put it. Make sure that you don’t overwhelm the space – don’t put more than one piece on each wall. You could even go for just one spectacular piece, like a piece of sculpture or a painting that stretches the length of the wall. If it’s a really incredible, breath-taking piece then you can arrange the rest of the furniture around it so it becomes the focal point of the room and people will pay attention to it.

When it comes to decorating a home, we all have our own personal style to contend with. Some people like to stick with the catalogue inspiration you find in many magazines, while others like quirky and unusual items to accessorize their homes. However, one thing we can all get involved in a little more is creating our own pieces for our home.

You may think that you are not very crafty or perhaps haven’t got much time or patience for creating things yourself. But, some things are so easy that you just might be tempted to give them a go. Thanks to websites like Pinterest there is more inspiration than ever before, from the complex to the easy you are bound to find something that you could do. I thought it would be a great idea to share with you some DIY crafts that could help you get started.

Homemade Soft Furnishings: All of us have some sort of soft furnishings in our home, so why not create some of them yourself. They’re amazing to style a room with and can help create a theme or carry out a color scheme that you had in mind. Here are some of the top homemade soft furnishings you could create.

Cushions: Cushions are one of the easiest things that you can sew. With many patterns online to help you cut out the fabric and even tutorials on how to use the sewing machine you can’t go too wrong. The great thing about this is that you get to choose the fabric, so it makes an unusual dressing feature to a bed or couch. Cushions are allowed to be loud and fun so don’t be afraid to pick out a bright and vibrant fabric with a crazy pattern. It could transform your living areas and make great talking points. Plus, they are one of a kind so there is no chance of someone having anything the same as you.

Bed Linen: If you are a little more daring or brave, you could take on the challenge of creating your own bed linen. In theory, it’s just like creating one giant cushion cover, but there is a lot of fabric to work with so you may want to keep with the practice on smaller items. Again, the best thing about it is choosing your own fabric so you can be as unique and daring as you want to be with vibrant patterns or unusual color choices.

Bed Spreads: A bedspread is a little different. Traditionally being thicker in material and something that is more for dressing the bed area than sleeping with. Most people tend to create a patchwork quilt for this sort of thing. You could collect cuts of fabric and design to create something totally unique. A quilt like this may be a more long term project.

Blankets: Blankets make great presents, especially for friends and family who have just had a newborn baby. But, they are also amazing in your home for those cold winter nights. A cute tip to remember for the future for when you have your own family is to keep outgrown baby clothes. Use pieces of the material to create a beautiful patchwork blanket that could be a keepsake for years to come.

DIY Touches to Already Existing Items:

Sometimes we don’t have the time to create DIY items from scratch, but that doesn’t mean that your home interior can’t have that DIY touch. This is when you could get creative with existing items in your home.

Twinkly Lights: Everything looks better by fairy light glow, am I right? Especially at this time of year where the twinkly lights are out in full force. But, this kind of lighting doesn’t have to be reserved for Christmas. Adding some cute fairy lights to a bed headboard makes a bedroom feel cozier and more inviting. You could even add some twinkly lights to shelves, plants (my dad put lights on a fern this year, lol), or large pictures that hang on the walls.

Embellishments: If you love having a bit of bling to shine through your home, then get a little handy with gems and a glue gun. Add some gems to an existing lampshade, a shelf, or even a desk area. Hot glue guns and adhesives are easily purchased online and can be very simple to use. You could also add embellishments to clothes or other DIY projects you are making like blankets or cushion covers.

Add Some Personalized Artwork to Your Home:

Finally, nothing is more personal than art. We all have our own taste, ranging from textured paintings, canvas drawings, or real life photographs. Use this in abundance and create your own DIY projects to decorate your home with art.

DIY Canvas Prints: If you have a talent for art why not use it? Blank canvases are easily purchased, giving you that chance to create something from the heart. Perhaps you love bright and vibrant brushstrokes of paint, or something a little more delicate like a portrait or a painted landscape. Using your talent to create a piece of artwork for your home is satisfying (Especially when someone might compliment you on it!). It’s a great way to continue a theme or color scheme in any room decoration.

Photo Montage Wall: If you prefer the real life side of art and you have a passion for photography, then why not get a little snap happy with your camera more often and take those pictures. Create a photograph montage wall in one of your favorite rooms. You could use a theme of black and white prints with matching frames, or just go a little crazy and place random shots in no order. It’s such a personal thing and should invoke happy memories every time you look at it.
