JC Comics Haul Pt. 2

JC Comics Haul Pt. 2

Hello! During a visit a few weeks ago to the best comic shop in my neck of the woods, JC’s, I was introduced to a horror series called Nailbiter. It is about solving the mystery of why a small town has a double digit amount of serial killers. The owner of the store convinced me to give it a go with the promise that I would love it. So, I went ahead and purchased Volume One and Two. He was so right because I devoured both volumes and couldn’t wait to return to the store to get volumes three through eight that were special ordered for me. I picked them up this past weekend and cannot wait to sink my teeth into them! Check it out:

I consider myself to be a pretty frugal person. Other than the every few months or so trip to TJMaxx and a meal or two out with Johnny in a month, I really don’t spend much on anything but necessities. This massive haul of the completed set of Nailbiter was a major treat yoself purchase for me and it was a thrill because I don’t do something like this very often. I was SO excited to have the entire collection and I was able to justify buying it all in one fell swoop. I’d much rather have the next volumes in the series readily available as opposed to going back to JC’s every time I need a new one. I have a feeling I’ll be back at the store soon enough once I’m done with the series! πŸ˜€

Back in my theater days, I used to love going to bookstores and buying new plays to read. It felt like I was spoiling myself and I remember rushing home to crack open my new purchases. This haul brought me back to that wonderful sense of anticipation when you just know you are about to read something good. These past few months have been trying times for yours truly between the stress of work and life in general and getting back into graphic novels has really given me something to look forward to. I considered my Nailbiter haul as a reward to myself for completing three successful months as Tim Misny’s social media manager and all of the hard work I’ve put in to make this job possible. Nothing says “celebrate” to me like a bagful of books… or new clothes… or shoes. πŸ™‚

Johnny and I are definitely in our treat yoself era. Graphic novels for me and records for him. It is a joy to be able to invest in our hobbies and our time off of work is infinitely more pleasurable because of it!

How do you treat yourself? What is your favorite thing to shop for? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Lil Red’s Book Club: Nailbiter Vol. 2 “Bloody Hands” By Joshua Williamson Edition

Hello everyone and welcome to a brand new, spoiler free edition of Lil Red’s Book Club! I was introduced to the Nailbiter series at my favorite local comic shop, JC’s, thanks to an excellent recommendation from the owner. During my last trip there, I purchased volume one and two of the series and completed the first one in one sitting. I thought I was going to have to nurse volume two until the special order for the rest of the volumes got shipped to JC’s. Blessedly, it arrived quickly and I was able to pick up the rest of them on Friday. So I devoured volume two, too! Before we begin our discussion on Bloody Hands, I will be placing a big fat trigger warning for graphic violence, gore, and disturbing content. Now, let’s get to it:

image_50435073(10)

Bloody Hands begins where There Will Be Blood left off. Finch and Sheriff Crane have located the man they were searching for, Eliot Carroll, in an underground tunnel beneath what is known as the Serial Killer Graveyard. He is in bad shape and his colleagues are nowhere closer to solving the mystery behind their town of Buckaroo and why it is the birth place to a double digit amount of serial killers. There are several working theories, but none of them are quite right. And, as panic spreads throughout Buckaroo compliments of the murders in volume one, the townsfolk begin to act out in their own uniquely awful ways.

Of course, we are only two volumes into Nailbiter and that is not enough time to make real traction in finding answers. Rather, Bloody Hands helps set the stage for what is to come. We are introduced to The Whistler, another famous serial killer who has a love of “whistling while he works” on his victims. Finch also tracks down a lead that Eliot was working on at a bee farm ran by a deranged grandfather and grandson duo. Buckaroo used to be a blossoming community thanks to its exports of honey. Then, the bees died suddenly and inexplicably. This is the last functional farm in the town and Eliot couldn’t help but wonder if there is a connection between the bees and the Buckaroo Butchers. The jury is still out.

Finally, we get a taste of the zealots of Buckaroo who are trying to turn the town around by any means necessary. Reverend Fairgold begins to fearmonger throughout the streets. He urges the power of prayer and for the townsfolk to share their secrets to shed light on why the devil resides in Buckaroo. Fairgold is extremely insistent on this to our Sheriff Crane as it is revealed that Edward “Nailbiter” Warren was her high school sweetheart in volume one. He, and most of the community, believe that she is helping him in some way. The fact of the matter, though, is that Finch and Crane need Warren’s assistance to get anywhere closer to solving the mystery. Bloody Hands ends with Finch in Warren’s home taking him up on this whether he likes it or not. How will the interrogation go? We’ll find out in volume three!

Although we didn’t learn too much new intel about the Buckaroo Butchers in Bloody Hands, I still thought it was a strong volume. It didn’t pack as much as a punch as There Will Be Blood because the primary focus in this one was the townsfolk themselves. Even if we didn’t get all of the answers we were hoping for, Bloody Hands needed to happen to paint a full picture of Buckaroo because that includes the people that reside there – not just the serial killers. It was extremely interesting to see the measures the residents were taking. Perhaps the most gripping was Issue Nine called School Bus, when the long term bus driver of Buckaroo, Mister Crowe, has his own ideas in mind for how the town should be cleansed.

Bloody Hands was also helpful in relationship development. We really get to see Finch and Crane take their partnership in stride as they work the case. The friendship between Crane and the resident “weird teenager”, Alice, also deepens and she becomes the unofficial tag along throughout the volume. It isn’t revealed how Alice and Crane are connected and I am looking forward to finding that out. I’m not sure if Alice knows Crane because she’s a troubled youth or is, perhaps, her kid sister. Either way, this is A-okay with me because I adore Crane’s begrudging acceptance of Alice’s enthusiasm and huge attitude problem. It provides much needed relief in such an intense series and whatever partnership they have really begins to blossom in Bloody Hands.

Overall, I am going to rate Bloody Hands with a seven out of ten stars. Did we gain traction in solving why Buckaroo is the birth place of serial killers? No. Did this volume need to happen to give you a better understanding of everyone who lives in Buckaroo? Yes. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

What are you currently reading? What should I read next? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Lil Red’s Book Club: Nailbiter Vol. 1 “There Will Be Blood” By Joshua Williamson Edition

Lil Red’s Book Club: Nailbiter Vol. 1 “There Will Be Blood” By Joshua Williamson Edition

Hello everyone and welcome to a brand new edition of Lil Red’s Book Club… Or should I say Lil Red’s Graphic Novel Club?! I have been crazy busy, crazy stressed and just do not have the mental capacity for reading “book books” right now. Instead, I have been enjoying a deep dive back into graphic novels. Last week, I picked up the first two volumes of a horror series called Nailbiter from a local comic book shop in my neck of the woods. I devoured the first volume “There Will Be Blood” in one sitting and am nursing volume two until I can pick up the rest of the series that the owner ordered just for me this Friday. When he told me I would love this series, he wasn’t lying because I am obsessed!

Before we begin our discussion in a spoiler free setting, I will be placing a big fat trigger warning on Nailbiter. It is gory, gruesome, and downright disturbing. Not your bag? It’s all good! Interested? Then let’s get to it:

image_50402049(8)

Buckaroo, Oregon is a small town where everyone knows everyone. It is also a town that is known to everyone worldwide for being the birth place of sixteen of the most brutal serial killers known to man. In Buckaroo, if you aren’t personally related to a serial killer, then you surely went to school with one or lived next door in one of the tiny neighborhoods. What is it about this town that breeds serial killers? No one knows. Someone is getting awfully close though and his name is Eliot Carroll. In fact, he just phoned his friend – a disgraced NSA agent called Nicholas Finch to haul ass to Buckaroo. He is hot on the tail of the mystery of the Buckaroo Butchers and has something that Finch needs to see to believe.

When Finch makes it to Buckaroo, he expects to be greeted by Carroll. However, he is nowhere to be found. As he searches for his friend, Finch finds himself in front of the Murder Store – a specialty shop with serial killer memorabilia for sale. In front of the shop, the quirky teenager Alice is being roughed up by two local losers. Finch assists in putting the situation to an end and Sheriff Crane arrives on scene. She is a total baddie who was working closely with Eliot on the Buckaroo Butchers case. She, too, is fearful for him as he missed their standing coffee date to discuss progress.

With Eliot in certain danger, there is nowhere else to turn. Nowhere good, anyways. Finch and Crane need help and they must look to an unwanted and unlikely source. None other than Edward “Nailbiter” Warren, the most infamous of all serial killers birthed out of Buckaroo. He was acquitted in trial for his sins and still resides in Buckaroo to this day. Edward also has a standing appointment with Eliot that has not been met, but is he helping Finch and Crane out of concern or something more sinister? Read Nailbiter to find out!!

I have read a lot of graphic novels in my day, but none of them are quite like Nailbiter. This series grabs you by the arm and simply doesn’t let go from the very first panel. Between Joshua Williamson’s gritty writing and finely detailed and captivating art by Mike Henderson, a formidable Volume One was created. Each artist worked in tandem so beautifully to create memorable characters. Finch was tough as nails, a sense of foreboding lingered around Alice, and even Edward “Nailbiter” Warren was a character that you absolutely loved to hate. My favorite was Sheriff Crane who carried the story impeccably with her icy, sarcastic demeanor and very… interesting backstory.

Needless to say, I was hooked on this series right from the jump. It had such a sense of urgency that I couldn’t not finish it in one go. The basic story line was just so darn fascinating – a middle of nowhere town that breeds serial killers. It’s every horror and true crime fan’s slam dunk. A complaint that I saw a lot of online was that there were several “plot holes” in Volume One. Don’t let that be a deterrent. Let it be a reason to keep reading the series because there are multiple volumes for a reason. I can’t wait to see what comes next!

I am definitely going to give Nailbiter Volume One the coveted ten out of ten stars. From start to finish, this was unputdownable and I am so eager to sink my teeth into the rest of the series!

What are you currently reading? What should I read next? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

JC Comics Haul

Hello!! There are so many amazing local businesses in my neck of the woods. My favorite one, though, has got to be JC Comics. It has been a staple in Cuyahoga Falls since I was little and I definitely remember going there a lot with my brother, Andrew. To this day, we still love to frequent JC’s and just had a trip there this past week. JC’s isn’t a big shop, by any means. However, it feels like home whenever I walk in and the owner is there behind the counter to greet us warmly and chat it up. He also ended up talking me into a new series during my last visit and gifted me with freebies too! Check it out:

image_50401025(4)image_50436609(6)image_50731777(6)

I consider myself to be an avid reader, but have fallen off the path pretty significantly. I have just been super busy and that can get overwhelming. When I get overly stressed out, I don’t have much mental capacity left for anything else – especially reading. This is why I have gotten back into graphic novels because they are more low key and I take a lot of joy in admiring the artwork. When my brother and I visited JC’s, I wanted to scope out some new series to take note of and one called Nailbiter caught my eye.

I spent a lot of time flipping through the pages of the first volume of Nailbiter and when the owner clocked it, he said I would like it without a doubt. I am a huge horror fan and Nailbiter is all about a small town with a double digit population of serial killers. So, yeah, he was totally right lol. Curiosity got the best of me and I walked away with the first and second volume of it. The owner is even ordering the other five volumes just for me so I can have the whole collection! πŸ™‚

Not only did he hook it up for Nailbiter but he also surprised me with some freebies while I was checking out. The first issue of five other horror series that he thought I would enjoy too. When he put them on the counter, I thought I could only pick one so I was ecstatic when I was given the lot! It was such a kind gesture because after so many shopping trips and conversations, he really does know my style when it comes to comics. These might not be in the traditional format for Lil Red’s Book Club but I can’t wait to dive in and share my thoughts with all of you. πŸ˜€

JC Comics is a beloved gem where I live and it has withstood the test of time thanks to the wonderful owner and his employees. They truly foster a love for literature and art to everyone who walks in the door and I am looking forward to my next visit so we can discuss Nailbiter!

What is your favorite local business? What is your favorite graphic novel? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

*Super* Early Christmas Present

Hi! When it comes to gift giving occasions, I simply cannot wait for the day of and ask my giftees if I can give them their presents as soon as they arrive in the mail. My sweet Johnny knows this firsthand because I don’t think we have ever waited until the day of a birthday, anniversary, or holiday to open gifts! This year, Christmas came especially early for us as we already gave each other presents last weekend lol. Take a look at the best give ever from my husband:

I like to do all of my present shopping way ahead of time so, of course, I had Johnny’s Christmas gift ready to go since the beginning of September. I guess I inspired him to shop early because he let me know that he had my gift too!

Knowing that each of us had our prezzies already was going to make it impossible to wait until Christmas. We decided to give each other a hint and if we guessed right, then we would tell each other. Johnny’s hint to me was “it is something that you have wanted for forever but never want to pay for”.

Right off the bat, I was stumped because there’s a million things that I would love to have but don’t want to pay for – mainly clothes related. Then, it clicked. My favorite comic book series, Sandman, by Neil Gaiman will have its own Netflix show which will be releasing soon. Johnny isn’t familiar with it, so I have been talking about it constantly and every time it gets brought up, I mention how much I would like to have the Sandman Omnibuses so I can have the complete collection.

As you can see, I guessed correctly because that is, indeed, what Johnny got for me for Christmas. It is, hands down, one of the best gifts I have ever received and I cannot wait to reread my favorite series in its entirety for the millionth time – no trip to the library required! πŸ˜€

One of my many favorite things about Johnny is how incredibly thoughtful he is. This gift is the ultimate testament of how he listens to me when I’m talking, even if I’m rambling about something for the hundredth time. That is the best gift of all – no matter how freaking cool the Omnibuses are! ❀

Who else is excited for the Sandman series on Netflix? Who has started their holiday shopping already? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Cool Encounters

Cool Encounters

Hi!! My husband and I love attending trivia nights together with our friends and, win or lose, a great time is always had by all. Because of schedule conflicts, we haven’t been in a couple of weeks but the last time we went was definitely an evening to remember for me… I got to meet one of my favorite comic book illustrators, Craig Russell!

For those of you who don’t know, I am a HUGE graphic novel/comic book fan and my all time favorite would have to be the Sandman series by Neil Gaiman. Sandman is, easily, one of the finest works of literature I have ever read and I try to read the extremely lengthy series once every two years. One of the cool things about Sandman is that several illustrators worked on it and it was so interesting to see the beloved characters drawn from different points of view. Craig Russell just so happens to have worked on the Sandman series and he illustrated one of my favorite spin offs, The Dream Hunters.

When Johnny pointed Craig out to me at one of the opposing team’s tables on trivia night, I lost my shit (for lack of a better phrase!). He told me I have to talk to him after the games were over and I was so nervous because it really was like meeting a hero. I have at least ten tattoos from the Sandman series and one of my biggest pieces is an illustration by Craig!

During my little meet and greet with Mister Russell, he admired all of my tattoos and was blown away that his work was on me. We got to talk shop for over thirty minutes about Sandman, our favorite issues, and the upcoming Netflix series. Craig even encouraged me to let him know whenever I read any graphic novels he might like. He was also kind enough to take pictures with me and sign his autograph. It was basically the coolest thing ever.

I can’t wait to bump into Craig again and I will be prepared because I actually just finished another graphic novel that he illustrated – Coraline. I will have my copy ready to go for him to sign and am looking forward to hearing more of his amazing insights. ❀

Have you ever met one of your heroes before? What was it like? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Audible Awesomeness

Standard
Audible Awesomeness

Howdy! Johnny and I both love reading and we have quite a respectable collection of books between the two of us. To me, there is nothing better than holding a tangible book in my hands and turning the pages myself. I have never been too interested in books for the Kindle or book tapes because I do prefer an actual book. But, that all changed when I was introduced to Audible through a chance encounter with my Facebook ads.

For those of you who don’t know, I am obsessed with the Sandman comics by Neil Gaiman. I have read the series countless times as well as all of the offshoot stories for different characters from Sandman. I have several tattoos from Sandman and when I feel like splurging, I might just fuck around and buy the (very expensive) omnibuses so I will have my own copy of the saga.

For those of you who don’t know again, there were talks of making a Sandman TV series or movie for years now but it just never got put into production. And, because it is such an epic tale, it would be hard to condense all of it into a season of TV or a two hour movie. I had all but given up on any Sandman content outside of the comics until I was scrolling through my Facebook newsfeed.

The ad I saw literally made me pump my fist in the air and say “YES!” because it was for a book tape of Sandman that could be listened to on Audible. It’s not just any book tape though because it features an all star cast with James McAvoy, Kat Dennings, Andy Serkis, and Neil Gaiman, himself, as the narrator. I needed it.

Because Johnny has Amazon Prime, we got a month subscription to Audible FO FREE as well as two free book tapes. Johnny picked a history one out for himself and I, of course, opted for Sandman. I began listening to it as soon as we finished completing the info for our trial order and I honestly could have cried. It was that good.

For the past over half a decade now, the amazing and fantastical characters of Sandman have kept me company. However, all of their voices just sounded like me saying the lines in my head as I read them. Lol, to actually hear the character’s voices while I pictured the comic book pages in my head was nothing short of incredible for me. I got to hear the character’s in a way that their creator, Neil Gaiman, saw fit and that’s the coolest part. And hearing Neil Gaiman narrate is own story the way he wanted it to be told was the cherry on top.

The Sandman audible tape covers the first three collections in an almost eleven hour recording. I am not quite done with it yet, however, I am already chomping at the bit for the next installment which I hope will be a thing. Fingers and toes crossed!

Johnny and I worked out a perfect schedule for both of us to enjoy our own hobbies. As soon as we both get home from work, he settles in to play Borderlands and I curl up on the couch to listen to my tape. For about an hour and a half or two, we hang out while we do our own thing and then we have dinner and watch our shows for the rest of the evening. And, I’ve got to say, it suits us just fine and I can’t wait to conclude the epic audio tale soon. πŸ™‚

Do you prefer an actual book to a Kindle copy or book tape? What are you currently reading? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Tattoo You: Death From Sandman Edition

Tattoo You: Death From Sandman Edition

Helloooo! I am a huge graphic novel fan and my all time favorite is the Sandman series by Neil Gaiman. I have read and reread the fantastic saga countless times and it still manages to surprise and intrigue me every time. I have several tattoos from the Sandman series featuring my favorite characters like Dream, Delirium, and Destiny, but the one I love most of all is probably of Death. Check out this beaut:

death

Death is probably the most beloved Sandman character to anyone you will ask. She’s this darling little goth girl who is the human personification of, you guessed it, death. But, instead of having a grim outlook on life, she loves it and is always up for an adventure. Death is a protector and meets every single person in their final moments to ease the transition from the living to the dead.

Although I enjoy each character from Sandman in their own right, I have always been drawn to death. I adore her spunky, sassy attitude and her sleek sense of style. She’s bubbly and cheerful and I think that that teaches people to find the joy in the not so great situations because it’s always there if you know where to look.

Who else is a fan of the Sandman series? What is your favorite comic book series? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

My Second One Lovely Blog Award

Hiii everyone and happy weekend! I hope that everyone is having a fabulous day so far. On Thursday I was so flattered to be nominated for My Second One Lovely Blog Award by the sweet Juliet at: notcapulet! All About Me:

  1. I currently have over twenty days worth of music on my iTunes and my collection is always growing. I’m looking forward to adding Enya’s newest album, Dark Sky Island, as well as some Fleetwood Mac next.
  2. I absolutely adore the Despicable Me movies! I usually don’t care for anything animated but those movies are definitely the exception. Minions are my spirit animals and thanks to my boyfriend and sister I have a collection of Despicable Me stuffed animals including: Agnes, Kevin, Stuart, fluffy unicorn, and Kyle!
  3. My two favorite television shows are Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Larry David is a genius.

Man Crush Monday: Sandman Edition

Helloooo everyone and welcome to another edition of Man Crush Monday – Sandman style! This weeks #MCM is a bit different because my man crush isn’t an actual human being but I still love him/lust after him just the same! Enjoy this ironic choice of music and then let’s get to it!

Dear Sandman,

First things first, even though you’re a graphic novel character, I am so weirdly and madly in love with you. Second of all, I’d rather call you by one of your other names, so Morpheus it is! This past year I’ve been on the biggest Neil Gaiman kick ever, so it was only a matter of time before I discovered the Sandman series. Within mere pages of the very first issue, I was totally obsessed. After one single month, I had completed the entire series from beginning to end and all I wanted was more, so I started to read them again! I think what I like so much about these graphic novels is the whole idea that bad people get punished and the good ones get rewarded in some way shape or form. That’s what attracted me so much to Morpheus initially, because he could empathize with the victims and he felt the need to protect them from any further damage. There’s something about reading the chronicles of his world in The Dreaming that makes me feel safe and that’s so important to me.Β Yes, beautiful Morpheus did have some not so great moments with past lovers, family, and friends but deep down in my heart I still feel like he always means well. Not only is Morpheus a somewhat benevolent lord but he’s also my emo kid fantasy come true. I mean seriously, he’s so gorgeous I can’t even. Hubba hubba. I’ve heard rumors of a possible Sandman film and frankly, I hope that it doesn’t happen. All I need are the words and pictures on paper to take me to a different world and no matter how amazing the film is, it just won’t be the same. Thank you to Morpheus for making me feel understood, thank you for making me feel like I’m not so alone, and thank you for always providing me with sweet dreams. I LOVE YOU!!!!

^^^ I really want to get the first image tattooed! That’s definitely going to happen sometime in the near future!
