Lil Red Recommends – Holiday Gift Edition!!

I absolutely LOVE shopping for Christmas gifts…and just shopping in general, so I’ve had a blast putting together my holiday gifts this year! Instead of venturing into the craziness at the mall to do my shopping, I’ve been purchasing all of my presents online at http://www.amazon.com – and let me tell you: it’s the best decision I’ve ever made! There is absolutely NOTHING better than shopping stress free from the comfort of your own home. After I stopped working at the mall in September, I haven’t really frequented it, aside from a handful of times. When I went to visit my sister at work on Wednesday afternoon last week, the mall was jam packed and it gave me anxiety!!! There were way too many people and the stores were so trashed that it made even window shopping obnoxious. One of the best things about Amazon is that it’s literally a one stop shop. They have everything you could possibly need to put together an awesome gift. There’s a few gifts that I’ve grown particularly fond of giving over the past few years that I’d like to share with you guys. Hopefully this will spark some ideas to help finish all of your holiday shopping!

TV Series Box Sets: These are literally the bread and butter of my Christmas gifts. It all started years ago when my mom would get my dad the Seinfeld seasons for his birthday or holidays. Then we started watching Curb Your Enthusiasm once we were confident that we’ve seen every Seinfeld episode known to man kind. My mom would get the seasons from the library but that gets annoying really quick when the DVDs skip from being scratched so much. So I took it upon myself to carry on my moms tradition and buy my dad a season or two for every gift giving occasion until we had the complete series. He loved it! Box sets of TV shows are so convenient, especially when the show you like to watch has to be accessed on the computer. Last year my sister was obsessed with Breaking Bad, but she could only watch it on Netflix, so Sarah the Gift Giving Extraordinaire got her the DVDs to solve the problem of her always hijacking the computer. This year I got my parents the box set of Six Feet Under, their new obsession that they can only access on http://www.hbogo.com. I also got my sister the last seasons of Breaking Bad to complete her collection and season one of The Strain. Unfortunately, Kristen already knows that she’s getting The Strain because she told me a few days ago that she planned on buying it so I had to tell her that I already had it pre ordered for her! She was still really happy all the same though!!

Board Games: This might be kind of a lame idea but I promise you that it’s effective!!! Nothing makes parents more happy than family game night….okay well maybe there’s a few things that make them happier – but still. This year I bought a strategy game Cards VS Dice for my brainiac brother and his fiance. My sister has been talking about wanting to get Cards Against Humanity for a while and I’ve heard that it’s a lot of fun, so I bought the starter packs of the game as a gift to everyone in the family. Some other fun games that I’d recommend if you’re thinking about giving a board game gift to your family are: Catch Phrase, Apples to Apples, Crush, and Quiddler. Another thing that falls under the game category would be puzzles. I got one of my brothers a jigsaw puzzle of one of his favorite football stadiums so that we could assemble it together. After the puzzle is complete I thought it would be cool to glue it together and frame it for a cool addition to his room.

Bath & Body Products: I know, I know – this is an obvious one. But let me fill you in on why I’m writing about it. Have you ever felt like a gift that you purchased just wasn’t enough? BOOM. Bath and body care is the perfect add on to a gift to make it feel more full and complete. The nice thing about getting somebody gifts to pamper themselves with is that they might not buy stuff like that on their own. Apparently not every grown woman buys bubble bath products anymore. Go figure. But anyways, I always buy some goodies from The Body Shop for my girlfriends to add on to their presents, and they love it every time. Just an FYI that in store and online The Body Shop has some extremely cute and very reasonably priced gift sets – you can check them out at http://www.thebodyshop.com!

tbs

Vacation Planning Books: Is there anyone in your family or friends that loves planning vacations? My dad would be that person in my family! He loves traveling and planning amazing family vacations. Next summer we plan on going to Universal Studios in Florida, so as part of his gift I bought him the 2015 guide to the amusement parks. I’m well aware that lots of local libraries carry these travel books, but it’s nice to own them so you can take notes and highlight things that look like fun in them. Do you know for sure that you’re going to be going on a vacation with family, friends, or a significant other? If so, another fun gift for the vacation planners would be purchasing a gift card to a restaurant in the area or making I Owe You cards for dinner or souvenirs from your travel location.

Gifts That Serve a Purpose: How many gifts have you received over the years that sit in your closet to this day? My number one rule for gift purchasing is buying things that I know for a fact the recipient is going to use. My best friend Lea loves writing down her daily schedule for school and work in a planner, so I got her a really cute 2015 planner and a travel coffee cup to match it. My parents like having a 365 day calender to look at over breakfast in the morning, so naturally that was an obvious gift to get them. My mom needs a new laptop case for work, so of course I’m going to get it for her. Gift giving becomes super easy when you think about what each person would definitely use. There’s also a 99% chance that the people who you’re purchasing for are going to love the handy gift you got them, which will save you from the awkward “did you happen to save the receipt” conversations!

OOTD: Holiday Edition

Standard
OOTD: Holiday Edition

Hello hello! So if you guys recall from one of my previous articles “Jumpsuit Joy” then you’ll know that I’m all about the unconventional holiday outfit. (To me, any clothing that isn’t red or green qualifies as an unconventional piece to wear this holiday season!) Today I put together an outfit that I plan on wearing to one of the family gatherings that I will be attending and wanted to share it with you!

IMG_1089[1]

As usual, here’s the breakdown of the brand name and where I purchased each item in my look:

  • Lace maxi skirt: PacSun, Kirra
  • Polka dot button down: Aerie
  • Black cami: Charlotte Russe
  • Heels: Famous Footwear, Steve Madden

I absolutely LOVE this outfit. My black lace maxi skirt was probably one of my favorite PacSun purchases I’ve ever made. The funny thing is, I never really wore this skirt until my beloved grandma’s funeral. After that, I completely fell in love with it, especially from the sentimental value that it now holds. I think that the lace detailing on this piece is just divine, especially considering that it’s just from a clothing store in the mall. The fun thing about this skirt is that there’s a slip built into it that ends above the knee, so the rest of your leg is exposed beneath the lace. I particularly adored the romantic, Gothic feel that this skirt has – it makes me feel like a walking Edward Allan Poe story. I also really like that my pasty pale legs are exposed in all of their glowing glory beneath the lace. I plan on wearing my Aerie button down tucked into the skirt, of course. This is another piece in my wardrobe that I really like. In fact, I liked it so much that I bought it in the other color Aerie had of it at the time which was navy. Usually I’m not a big polka dot fan, but the shimmering gold polka dots over the cream colored gauzy fabric won me over. I’m also not really big on wearing variations of shades of white, but this shirt had just enough pigment in the cream coloring that it enhanced my fair skin tone instead of washing me out. My sister and I purchased our Charlotte Russe black cami for $4.99 years ago, and I’ve never owned a better cami since. This little baby is pure magic. It sucks in all of the right places and enhances all the right places if you know what I mean, creating the perfect hourglass figure. Whenever I’m feeling bloated from too much Taco Bell, this is my go to quick fix to getting my slender stomach back! I’m trusting all of you guys to keep that secret confidential! 😉 My Steve Madden heels are about eight years old. Crazy right?! I purchased them for my eighth grade graduation…they were my first pair of heels and I will never EVER part with them. I remember these babies catching my eye all of those years ago when I was wandering through Famous Footwear with my mom and I knew that they had to be mine. The thing that I love most about these heels then and now is the wooden heel on them. They give the satisfying clack of a woman in charge whenever you walk on a hard surface. These Steve Madden’s are the reason that I have a shoe obsession to this day. All together this look probably cost me around $100. Keep in mind that in most of my looks an employee discount was used on some of the pieces from when I worked at PacSun.

So there you have it, one of my looks for this holiday season! I’m so excited to wear this outfit to family gatherings and even just running errands. Clearly I’m the type of gal who doesn’t need an excuse to dress up! What do you plan on rockin this holiday season? What’s your favorite holiday look or trend? I’d love to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Happy Friday! -Sarah

American Horror Story – Episode 8

American Horror Story – Episode 8

Episode eight of American Horror Story: Freak Show was appropriately titled “Blood Bath”, and a blood bath it was…especially considering Dandy Boy took a literal one. A whole lot of murder took place this episode, so let’s dive right in and talk about it:

Gloria Mott: The lovely Gloria Mott died at the hands of her son, Dandy. Tonight’s episode began with Gloria talking about Dandy’s childhood with Dr. Finebloom, a therapist. “Words had a different meaning for him. Particularly the word no”, she said. She tells the therapist about early murderous tendencies in her son, such as how he killed the family cat after she complained that it was digging up her flowers. Or how his playmate, the ground keepers son disappeared and was never to be seen again. Despite all of these crimes, the last thing Gloria wants is for her precious son to be institutionalized, so she sets him up with the therapist by saying he’s going to test his genius IQ. During Dandy’s session a Rorschach test is done on him and all Dandy can see in the ink blots are scenarios of death. At the end of the appointment Dandy tells Dr. Finebloom about a magazine article he read about Papa New Guinea and how once a person was murdered, the tribesman would eat the flesh to gain their power. Dandy then asked the doctor if covering oneself in the blood of a victim would be good enough. After his session, Dandy calls Gloria out on the therapist not testing his IQ. “Do you think I’m sick mother?” He asks. “Of course not! You’re spirited,” Gloria replies. Dandy then cuts a bargain with her, saying that he’ll see the therapist again if she kills Regina, who has shown up looking for her mother, Dora. (who Dandy killed in a previous episode.) Regina is on to both Gloria and Dandy, so he wants her taken care of ASAP. “She wants me in the electric chair…and if I go I’m bringing you to sit on my lap,” he threatens. It’s obviously been a very emotional time for Dandy Boy, and by the end of the episode we find him crumpled on his couch in his toy room. He blames Gloria for the way he is, especially because he was a child of incest. Dandy tells his mom that Dora told him about his past when he was just five years old. He was told that Gloria’s father lost his fortune from the stock market crash in 1929 and would have given anything to get her lavish lifestyle back. She claimed that she loved her husband…even though he was her second cousin. There was also an allude to child molestation from Dandy’s father, which I’m sure will be discussed in further detail in a later episode. Dandy stands himself up and holds a gun to his head. Gloria pleads “I can’t go on if you kill yourself”. “Okay,” Dandy shrugs. He then turns the gun and pulls the trigger on his mother, shooting her right in the head. The episode ends with Dandy stripping from his bathrobe and easing himself into a tub filled with his mother’s blood.

Ethel Darling: Shocking, I know. We reunite with our freak show troupe running through the woods in search of Ma Petite, who was killed by Dell in episode seven. Her body is found torn and bloody, so everyone assumes that she was eaten by coyotes. Her body is shown to Elsa who takes it extremely hard, she says that Ma Petite was her “most precious one.” We then find her mourning in her tent when Ethel comes in with her dinner. “God put his own light into that little angel. It was as if he knew the world could only handle a little bit of himself at once,” she cries. Ethel doesn’t buy this for a minute though, because she’s on to Elsa and her theatrics. She’s well aware that Elsa would love for Bette and Dotte to be long gone, thanks to over hearing her conversation with Stanley about a “mercy killing” of the twins. Now she’s convinced that Elsa wanted Ma Petite gone because she was stealing her spotlight. “You accuse me of what, Elsa spits, “killing innocence itself?” She then slaps Ethel right in the face. Elsa tells Ethel that she’s going to find the twins so that they can once again prove her innocence, but Ethel pretty much tells her that she’s not going anywhere, and shoots her in the leg. To Ethel’s surprise, Elsa doesn’t bleed, stumble, or fall because all she did was blow a hole in her prosthetic leg. “You think you know me?” Elsa asks. “You know nothing at all.” She then proceeds to tell Ethel the story of how her legs were sawed off and the prop master who built her wooden legs. Elsa thinks she’s in the clear with Ethel after she shares her back story, but she’s not quite there yet. “To me the only pure things in the world were Ma Petite and my love and devotion for you,” Ethel says. She shows Elsa the gun again and says that the final bullet is for her. Before Ethel can pull the trigger on herself, Elsa asks her if she would like one last drink of Schnapps for the road. She walks to the bar cart and pours the drinks, well aware that Ethel is holding the gun to her back. Before she can pull the trigger, Elsa spins around and throws a knife right into her best friends eye, killing her instantly. If we know one thing about Miss Elsa, it’s that she’s a crafty devil…because her and Stanley were able to convince everyone that Ethel’s death was a suicide, and here’s how: While Maggie was picking flowers for Ma Petite’s funeral, she witnesses a car driving into a tree, with Ethel behind the wheel. While inspecting the scene, the troupe finds a chain wrapped around the tree and a noose made of the chain wrapped around Ethel’s neck. This ends up decapitating her dead body. The car was able to drive itself into the tree thanks to an expertly placed rock on the gas pedal and her destroyed eye was covered up with stage makeup. Elsa does an excellent job of mourning her best friend in front of her troupe and no one would ever think that Ethel died at her hand.

The almost murder of Penny’s dad and probable murder of Regina: After Ethel’s funeral service, the troupe ladies decide that no man will ever push them around again to honor Ethel who didn’t take shit from anyone. With this new strong, independent, don’t need no man attitude the ladies plan the murder of Penny’s father, who turned her into The Amazing Lizard Girl. They sneak into his house and knock him unconscious, Amazon Eve then carries him back to Desiree’s tent. “What you did to your daughter was chicken shit,” Desiree hisses, “now you’re gonna look the part.” Eve begins to pour home made tar all over him and then Penny screams “wait, wait wait! Let me!” She then pours the rest of the tar and covers her father in feathers with the rest of the girls. Desiree was about to stab him, when Maggie comes rushing into the room after hearing him screaming. She basically tells the ladies that they’re in for a lifetime of regret if they proceed with the murder. Desiree then hands the knife to Penny, who approaches her father slowly. “You may have turned me into The Amazing Lizard Girl. And you live because of me. If you ever mess with me and mine again, I will kill you,” she says to daddy dearest. The ladies then let him go free. I’m sure it isn’t too hard to figure out that Regina will more than likely be killed at the hands of Dandy in next weeks episode, especially considering her getting shot was in the sneak peak of tonight’s show at the end of episode seven.

IMG_1078[1]

Amidst all of the death taken place in tonight’s episode, a new member is welcomed to the troupe thanks to Elsa’s recruiting: Barbara…AKA Imma Wiggles, the new fat lady of the freak show. We don’t know much about her yet, except for the fact that she has a very healthy appetite. I’m sure we’ll be learning more about her very soon!

IMG_1082[1]

A lot happened in tonight’s episode and in my opinion too much happened. Blood Bath was all over the place in the story line, so it just seemed like a hodge podge of murder instead of one cohesive piece. Two important characters got killed off tonight, so I’m very curious to see what will happen next week! What did you like about tonight’s episode? What did you hate? Any questions or concerns? Leave me a comment and let’s chat! Goodnight! -Sarah

Help!!!!!!

Help!!!!!!

Hello hello!!!! So I’m sure if you follow my blog at http://www.lifewithlilred.com, you’ll be familiar with one of my best friends Kate. She’s my partner in crime…especially when it comes to shopping and wild and crazy ideas! Well we just came up with one of our best ideas yet. After we both graduate college in two years we would like to take a month long trip to Europe as a graduation gift to ourselves. We’ve both been working very hard in school. As you know I’m getting my Associate of Arts degree at Tri-C while Kate is getting her Bachelors of Business degree at the University of Akron. What better way to celebrate a college degree than blowing our savings fund on one final hurrah before we enter the adult working world?! Before I get farther into our plan of tom foolery and travel, I think it would be wise to tell you guys more about my wild friendship roller coaster ride with Kate. We met in high school French class when I was a freshman and she was a senior. We both adored our French teacher and she clearly loved both of us a lot, because she was the reason we became friends. I was going through a lot of shit in my teenage years. As a matter of fact, freshman year was probably one of the worst years of my life. Mrs. Teacher thought it would be good for me to have an older student to look up to, sort of like a mentor, so she privately asked Kate to take me under her wing…and the rest is history. We’ve seriously been inseparable every since our awkward first interactions in that fateful French class. Our friendship has taken us everywhere from shopping trips, a night out at the movies, car rides to nowhere, and assembling a ninety year old vintage Christmas tree. (We actually assembled that tree over Starbucks Peppermint Mochas last evening…we plan on making handmade ornaments to decorate it with while consuming a lot of wine. Once the decorations are made, rest assured that pictures will be posted!) One of my fondest memories of my friendship with Kate was when I got my temporary license and she taught me how to drive. I’m actually pretty confident that Kate would tell you that that’s her favorite friendship memory as well. It was a blustery September day when I got my temps and later that evening Kate took me out to Starbucks to celebrate. (We obviously love caffeine!) After we downed our drinks she drove to the middle of god knows where in Akron to an empty parking lot and parked the car. I asked her what she was doing and she said “you’re going to drive”. I remember being so nervous and excited all at once. I hesitantly switched places with her and got behind the wheel of her car, Winston. She taught me the basics of accelerating, braking, turning, and parking. I drove around and around the parking lot practicing my left and right hand turns until it grew dark. Remember that line of Perks of Being a Wallflower where Charlie stated that he felt infinite? That’s exactly what I felt like that night. Ever since the first conversation Kate and I had about Harry Potter during our French class, she’s been like a big sister to me. Words can’t even describe how much I love her and how thankful I am to have her as my best friend.

So now that you know a little about us and our almost seven year friendship, here’s what I’m asking of you guys: What are some places in Europe that are must sees? We plan on spending a week in Paris, a week in London, and then spend the rest of the two weeks exploring and country hopping. What sights would we regret not going to? What’s the best stores or boutiques to shop at? (Because Kate and I LOVE shopping!) What restaurants do you recommend? And do you know of any cheap hotels or hostels that we could stay in? We’ll also be making a http://www.gofundme.com account within a month or so, so if you’re generous enough to donate to our travels, we’ll send you a handmade goody made with love by Kate and I and seal it with my red lipstick kiss. As soon as our account is made it will be posted to lifewithlilred! We would also be thrilled to meet up for coffee with any of my lovely European readers!

Thanks so much for reading and if you have any recommendations for us PLEASE leave me a comment and let’s chat! Don’t be a stranger! And if you read my reviews on American Horror Story Freak Show, made sure you check in with me tomorrow night for my review on the new episode!! Happy Tuesday! -Sarah

My Black Friday

Standard
My Black Friday

Hello one and all! I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday! Sorry that I’ve been MIA these past few days – I’ve been working, working, working! I had my fifth Black Friday in retail this week and it was pretty crazy. I woke up at four in the morning on Black Friday to be at Next by five thirty so we could open by six. Thank goodness for my mom who set her alarm with me at four so that I didn’t sleep through mine! She even had a pot of coffee ready for me – what a doll!!! So I got to work and right as we opened the door at six – BAM – the store was flooded with shoppers. I honestly wasn’t expecting it at all. This was my first Black Friday working outside of the mall, so I assumed that a smaller business wouldn’t have nearly as much shopping traffic…I was dead wrong. For my entire almost twelve hour shift at Next there was a constant stream of people flowing in and out of the store. It was exhausting! The day went by relatively quick though since we had a solid amount of shoppers all day. And when there wasn’t any one in the store it gave us time to straighten up all of the clothing and displays. It felt so good to be outside of the craziness that I’m sure was happening ten minutes down the street at the mall. I promised my sister that I would visit her during her very first retail Black Friday shift now that she works at The Body Shop. When I got to the mall around six o’clock in the evening it was still swarming with people. It gave me anxiety! By that time all of the stores were completely trashed, so it wasn’t even fun going into any of my favorite shopping spots. My sister looked like she was doing great though during her shift so I definitely had a proud mama moment about that!!! The best thing about my Black Friday was coming home to find a letter from my best friend Tyler who’s currently in basic training on the kitchen table…and just coming home in general! Ha! I was so happy and exhausted that I ended up crying the entire time I read the letter. They were happy tears of course! I miss him so much and hearing from him was the perfect ending to a long day. All in all it was a solid Black Friday. A different but good experience from my previous four shifts working in the mall!

Unfortunately my work weekend wasn’t quite over after my long day on Black Friday because Small Business Saturday occurred on the following day. It was only an eight hour shift yesterday but it still wore me out!! I’m pretty sure that everyone was done spending their money after Black Friday because we barely had any customers yesterday. It ended up being a very chill day but I was still tired!!! By the time I got home around nine thirty I was already fantasizing about curling up under my covers and going to bed! After about twenty hours of work in two days you better believe I slept like a rock last night! I think I got thirteen hours of sleep so I’m feeling rejuvenated, recharged, and ready to go. But in all reality I’m going to end up doing nothing today, I need some me time. My mom is going to dye my hair for me so I can get some pampering and my best friend Lea is going to swing by for an hour or so later tonight. So it should be a nice, quiet day at home.

After being at the mall on Black Friday evening I realized just how much I hate people. Lol I kid, I kid! But really, shopping becomes totally unenjoyable when you’re just being jostled around a gaggle of shoppers. I have Monday off so I plan on participating in the Cyber Monday deals to get the rest of my holiday shopping done. My online gift giving destination lately has been http://www.amazon.com. They seriously have EVERYTHING and the prices are fantastic!!! I’ve gotten about half of my holiday shopping done already so I’m really hoping I can check the last few people off of my list this Monday! If you know of any sites that are having some great Cyber Monday deals, please let me know!

How was everyone’s Thanksgiving? Did any of you guys go Black Friday shopping? What kind of deals did you get? What kind of craziness occurred where you were shopping at? I’d love to hear all about it so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Happy Sunday! -Sarah

Happy Thanksgiving!!!!!

Happy Thanksgiving!!!!!

Happy happy Thanksgiving!!!! My sister, mother, and I have taken a break from our preparations of our Thanksgiving dinner, so I figured now would be a good time to send some holiday wishes to all of you! There are so many things that I’m thankful for that I’d like to share with you. In my list and explanations I didn’t include my family and friends, because those are the obvious ones! My close circle of immediate family and a whopping two friends (sad but true) will always be my number one, so no explanation is needed:) #enoughsaid

Here’s some of the things that I’m thankful for this holiday season and every day!

My education: I’ve been feeling an overwhelming sensation of pride in myself lately for finally getting myself back to school. I always thought that college wasn’t going to be for me, but now that I finished my first semester I wish that I would have started school sooner! I’m so thankful that my parents have been helping me occasionally with my tuition and text books. But shockingly, I’m also thankful for being able to pay most of my college expenses on my own. Which leads me to my second thing on my list….

My job: As soon as I ended my four year stint at PacSun, I honestly had no idea what I was going to do. I was so nervous for my future. I was so scared that I wouldn’t find another job right away. Getting that call with a job offer from Next was the biggest relief I’ve experienced in a long time. If it wasn’t for that call, there’s no way that I could afford paying for my education almost completely on my own, as well as keeping up with my car payment for the Little Red Love Machine. I’m so appreciative to have a job period, let alone a job that I really enjoy. My coworkers and clientele are just fantastic, so it makes going into work a joy.

My blog: This might sound dumb to some people, but I really am thankful for starting http://www.lifewithlilred.com!! I’ve been told that I should make a blog countless times before, so a little over two months ago I figured “why not?”. And I am so glad that I did! I forgot how much I enjoyed writing and expressing my feelings until I started trying to make a blog post or two daily. I’m so thankful for all of my readers and followers who have shown me so much love and support! Lifewithlilred is always going to be a thing, and I’m really hoping that as the hype continues to build that I’ll be able to make some kind of moolah for my work. But that’s thinking way far in advance! It’s good to dream though:)

Myself: Sarah: I am so thankful for the person who you’ve become. It feels so good to finally say that I love who I am after years of depression, self harm, and eating disorders. I love the way I look, which I never thought I would say. I love that I’m open and accepting to everyone. I love that I have a bright and bubbly personality. I love that I think for myself, which is so very important. Most of all, I’m thankful that I’m finally able to recognize all of these amazing qualities about myself. I’m thankful that I’m no longer in a zombie like state of depression. I’m finally thankful to be alive.

So there you have it – the other things that I’m thankful for besides my family and friends! I hope all of you have an amazing Thanksgiving today. I hope all of you share it with people who you love. Where ever you are in the world – I am so thankful for you! Thank you so much for reading. If you have any questions or concerns: leave me a comment and let’s chat! ALSO: If you partake in Black Friday shopping tonight or tomorrow PLEASE remember to be kind to the retail workers!!! I promise you that they would give anything to not be working amongst all of the craziness that is sure to happen! Send me some good luck vibes as well so I can get through my Black Friday shift! It would be much appreciated 😉 Happy holidays! -Sarah

Unconventional…When did that become a bad thing?

Standard
Unconventional…When did that become a bad thing?

So there’s this deep seeded feeling of extreme bitterness that I really need to get off of my chest. And I’m sure that every person with body modifications has felt this way before. I am SO. FUCKING. SICK. of the judgement that I feel upon me on a daily basis. If you’re unfamiliar with my personal appearance, let me bring you up to speed. I used to have a wide array of piercings… (I’ve gotten pierced and repierced over thirty times!)

  • Four dermals on my collarbones
  • Four dermals on my hips
  • Four piercings on my nose
  • Two piercings on my lip

In 2012 all of my visible piercings had to be removed when I got employed at The Body Shop. Okay. Whatever. A few of my piercings were pretty extreme so I sort of understood it…even though visible tattoos were allowed in the company which I found very unfair. Once I left The Body Shop I decided I wanted to get the four piercings I had on my nose redone, because I absolutely loved them. They made me feel really good about myself and I adored the way they looked on me. A lot of people did. Unfortunately possible employers and random strangers (which I don’t care about) think otherwise. I was lucky enough that at PacSun my piercings and tattoos were never a problem, same with at my current job at Next. (Hurray!) But I can’t tell you the amount of times in job interviews I’ve had where the interviewer will straight up tell me that my beloved nose piercings need to be removed. On a few occasions I’ve also been told that my bright red hair would have to go back to a natural color. I found all of these requests so insulting. Isn’t refusing someone the right to work due to their personal appearance a form of discrimination? It’s almost 2015 and I will be damned if I alter my appearance for an unaccepting company. When did an unconventional appearance become such a bad thing??? My hair color and my body mods make me feel good about myself. They make me feel amazing, actually. They truly have became part of who I am as a person…and I really love who I’ve become. I refuse to be destined to a life time of working at Hot Topic because of the way I look. Honestly, this is another reason why I was so determined to get myself to college. I can’t wait to have a job in the arts where my appearance will be nothing more than a physical reminder of my creativity. I don’t care about the random passerbyers staring at me and I can put up with the dirty looks and constant questioning of “Did that hurt?!”. But when a company that I’m interested in working for refuses to be accepting of others, that’s when I draw the line. I’m sure many of you are thinking that I should just suck it up and take my piercings out or remove the color from my hair. But it’s not that easy. I used to hate who I was before. I reigned victorious over an eight year stint of severe depression and created a new life and image for myself from the ashes. The way I look is a constant reminder that I overcame all of my difficulties with myself once and for all. I finally feel beautiful and confident and I will never ever let anyone take that away from me. The day my nose piercings come out and my hair returns back to brown will be because I wanted it that way – not because a company won’t hire me because of it. And when it comes to jobs, my work ethic will speak for itself…not my personal appearance.

Public Service Announcement:

There’s a common misconception that modified folks are not the type of people to associate yourselves with. Well, I’m here to tell you that: People with body modifications, whether it be piercings, tattoos, colored hair, or anything else you can possibly think of are not bad people.

*Sigh of relief* I feel so much better now! I’ve had a lot of pent up frustration about this issue for a very long time and I really needed this vent session. Any questions or concerns? Lil Red Recommends – Part 5!!!!

Lil Red Recommends – Part 5!!!!

Not gonna lie, this week has been less than ideal. Work has been filled with not so nice coworkers and rude customers and school has been stressful. Luckily there’s been a few things that have made me feel better, which I’m going to share with you in this edition of Lil Red Recommends!

Getting drunk with your mother: Last night I came home from a particularly shitty day at work to find my family getting ready to have dinner. It was Italian night in my household so naturally that called for some wine! I’m a big wine drinker and with my moms help of barely drinking one glass, I finished the entire bottle. My mom is such a light weight that she claimed that her glass of wine got her drunk, it’s the most precious thing ever. So the evening was spent with gut busting laughter, stumbling around the kitchen, and singing a duet to the song “You Had a Bad Day” while using the empty wine bottle as a microphone. It was an absolute blast. I’ve never gotten drunk with my mom before and I sincerely hope that this happens again every now and then. The straight up ridiculousness of the mother daughter bonding time that happened last night was indescribable! All of the silliness that occurred was the perfect cure to a shitty day!

hahaa

Drunken retail therapy: So after my mom and I sobered up, we headed to the mall for some retail therapy. I was in desperate need of some new jeans. But here’s the trick, I refuse to wear any denim that isn’t black and super skinny. My purchase will be discussed in the next recommendation! Let me tell you guys, while my mom may have been completely sober after her one wine glass 😉 I was still slightly tipsy from almost a full bottle of wine. And from this experience I learned that there is nothing more fun than wandering around the mall while you have a wine buzz! It took my love for shopping to a new extreme because I combined it with my second favorite thing….getting drunk. I highly recommend public intoxication at least once in your life time, its a real treat! (Only once though…then no more public intoxication, kay?)

Snake skin patterned denim: I found my beloved new jeans at Express, one of my favorite stores. These jeans are drop dead GORGEOUS. They’re jet black with a gunmetal snake skin pattern coating it and are extremely skinny. About two weeks ago while I was shopping there with my sister, I noticed these beauties and was drooling over them the entire time. Unfortunately at eighty eight dollars, they were out of my price range. But I could NOT stop thinking about them. Lucky for me, last night they were having a forty percent off sale at Express and they had one pair of the jeans left in my size. All of the other sizes they had were ginormous. I knew that the denim had to be mine. I slipped into the fitting room, and changed into my new favorite piece of clothing. When I looked into the fitting room mirror they were just as perfect as I hoped they would be. They fit like a glove and were a perfect punk piece to add to my wardrobe. I’ve been looking for a pair of snake skin print jeans for quite some time now. But all of the pairs that I have found have been a snake skin pattern on top of grey or white jeans, and that doesn’t follow my all black everything rule. I thank the fashion gods for this gift of the perfect pair of black snake skin print jeans! Hurray! (Please excuse my mismatched socks in the photo below!) 😉

Read the book Perfect: I started the book Perfect by Rachel Joyce a few days ago. (She also authored one of my favorite books, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry). I’m about one hundred pages in and I can’t recommend this book highly enough. The book revolves around a boy who has witnessed a terrible accident and is doing everything in his power to prevent his mother from finding out…as she’s the one who caused the crime. We are introduced to a unique cast of characters – young Byron who is very protective of his mother Diana who is a forward thinking woman in the 1970’s. She refuses to live the cookie cutter lifestyle of the female house wife which leads to animosity from her peers. There is also sweet OCD ridden Jim, who has been in and out of mental institutions his entire life. I have yet to find out how the paths of Byron and his mother will cross with Jim’s, but I’m excited to find out. Rachel Joyce does an amazing job of creating a feeling of empathy for each of her characters… I love them all so much already! Reading Perfect has been the perfect distraction from a below average week.

Listen to Tapes ‘n Tapes: I’ve been listening to A LOT of Tapes ‘n Tapes lately. I think that their music is just fantastic. I’ve enjoyed playing all of their albums on shuffle as I’ve been driving around to where ever I needed to be this past week. They really are the perfect Indie rock band. Each of their three albums The Loon, Outside, and Walk It Off give a solid combination of upbeat tunes, amazing instrumentals, and sentimental ballads. My favorite album between the three is definitely their debut album The Loon. Each song off of that one is a slam dunk. But there are also many crowd pleasers on their second and third efforts as well! Tapes ‘n Tapes is great driving music and just hanging around the house doing nothing music. The music video below is for their song “Freak Out” from their second album Outside. It’s super catchy!

Don’t be an asshole: Pardon my French, but I’ve come across a lot of not so nice people this week. From awful customers to the most incompatible  coworkers ever I’m almost at my breaking point. I genuinely don’t understand the people who are mean to others just for the sake of being mean. And let me tell you, I’ve encountered a lot of people like that this week. Being around stand offish people really is enough to ruin my day. For some people it’s easy to just shake things like that off, but not me. I wish I didn’t take so much offense to it, but I do. It’s just the way I am I suppose, but I don’t think it’s out of reason to be upset by people who act like assholes to you for no good reason. So here I am freaking pleading all of you guys (myself included) to be courteous and respectful to others. You never know what the person you give a dirty look to might be going through that day. #enoughsaid

Watch Step Brothers: If there’s one thing that always makes me feel better, it’s watching my favorite Will Ferrell movie: Step Brothers. I watched this with my sister and mom a few days ago and it’s still funny to me no matter how many times I watch it! I’ve seen Step Brothers enough that I can quote the entire movie along with the actors (much to my family’s annoyance!). Sometimes you really just need to pop in your favorite stupid movie and veg out for a few hours. I don’t know about you, but I always feel better after two hours straight of laughing! “SO MANY ACTIVITIES!!!”

Be thankful: With Thanksgiving coming up, this is a no brainer. But it felt right to mention it anyways. Tell your family members and friends that you love them, compliment a stranger, apologize to those you have done wrong to. You know the drill. It only takes one small act of kindness to transform yours and somebody else’s day completely!

thanks

So there you have it, my Lil Red recommends for the week! What are some things that you do to make yourself feel better after a rough week? What’s your favorite quote from Step Brothers? Leave me a comment and let’s chat! Happy Sunday! -Sarah

OOTD: Urban Chic

OOTD: Urban Chic

Hey guys! Sorry that I’ve been MIA these past few days – I’ve been so swamped at work. And speaking of work, I want to show you guys what I’m wearing on the daily at my job! If you don’t already know, I work at Next, which is a store that specializes in urban clothing. Here’s my take on an Urban Chic look for when I’m doing it up on the job:

IMG_1043[1]

As usual, here’s the breakdown of all of the brands of each item and where I purchased them:

  • First crop top: PacSun, Been Trill
  • Second crop top: PacSun, Reason
  • Pleather joggers: Charlotte Russe
  • Nike tye dye and floral shoes: PacSun, Stefan Janoski

As you guys well know, I’m not a big fan of the “jogger”. BUT when I saw these pleather beauties at Charlotte Russe for only $14.95, I figured why not? My store has a plethora of joggers to choose from so I thought I might as well look the part when I’m selling them. I honestly wouldn’t wear these pants outside of work, but I have to admit that they’re quite comfortable!! To keep the urban vibe going strong in my look, I usually pair my joggers with an edgy crop top. I absolutely LOVE both of my options in the picture above. Been Trill is classically a brand for men, but on occasion we would get some female gear at PacSun. When we got this shirt in I HAD to have it! And naturally we carry Been Trill at Next since it’s a very well known street wear brand so this shirt is perfect. And I just adore the “Ballin” crop – I feel like such a sassy chica when I’m wearing it!! To tie together a cool urban look, you need a fresh pair of kicks. My Janoski’s are usually my go to option for when I’m working. Normally at PacSun we only get the adult male run of sizes for shoes. But in the exclusive digital floral and tye dye pattern we got sizes four through thirteen. These shoes were love at first sight and I knew that they had to be mine!! All together I probably spent $135 on these pieces. (But keep in mind that a lot of those items were bought with my employee discount when I worked at Pac.)

So there you have it, my take on an Urban Chic look! My inner diva is set free when I’m sporting this ensemble and it’s a great feeling!!! You can see me rocking my #beentrill shirt in my featured image 🙂

What are your favorite urban inspired pieces to wear? What store did you find them at? Leave me a comment and let’s chat! Happy Saturday! -Sarah

American Horror Story – Episode 7

American Horror Story – Episode 7

Alright, tonight’s American Horror Story: Freak Show episode “Test of Strength” had some shocking turns of events, so let’s get to it. Here’s some of the highlights of tonight’s episode:

Bette and Dotte’s blackmail: The episode started off where last weeks episode left off, with Jimmy Darling at the Motte residence to collect the twins. After some convincing he gets the girls to come back to the freak show. (In this interaction with Dandy, Jimmy begins to suspect him of being the accomplice to Twisty.) All of this has led Jimmy to believe that Elsa sold the twins off for stealing her freak show spotlight which causes him to mouth off to her during his rehearsal of singing Nirvana’s “Come As You Are”. Jimmy then summons the girls forward to give their side of the story of living in the Motte household. Bette begins to speak, but Dotte stops her telepathically and tells the troupe that her and her sister wanted to experience the finer things in life and that Elsa helped make that happen by sending them to live with Dandy. She said that Elsa told her and Bette that they always had a home at the freak show and that they wanted to come home. Of course all of these theatrics came with a price. Bette’s desires in the bribe included getting her hair dyed blonde, having caviar for breakfast, and becoming a comedian. Both girls also agreed on receiving a twenty percent profit from the tickets sold at the box office. Although Dotte told Elsa that she thought it should be fifty. While Miss Bette is getting dolled up for her blonde haired make over, Elsa slips her sister a note. In this letter Elsa explains to Dotte that she could have whatever she wanted for her part in the bribe. Dotte writes back to tell Elsa that she wants to have the separation surgery done by a doctor in Chicago. Despite Elsa granting seemingly everything to the twins, she still has quite a few tricks up her sleeve. We learned while Miss Elsa was dining with Stanley that she would not be opposed to a mercy killing of the girls. Both sleaze bags would reap the benefits of a huge payday for Stanley and to never have to worry about the twins again for Elsa. #SMH Their plan isn’t entirely a secret though, considering Ethel over heard the whole conversation while she approached Elsa’s dining area to serve dessert. We’ll have to wait and see what she does with this information!

Stanley blackmailing Del: Our freak show cast was getting super sketchy tonight because a whole lot of blackmailing was happening! Stanley just so happens to see Del at the gay bar searching for his freshly murdered lover, Andy. As soon as Sleazy Stanley sees Del at the camp grounds, the bribing begins. He threatens to reveal Del’s sexuality to the troupe if he doesn’t murder one of the freak show members. Stanley gives him one day to complete this daunting task. Del’s first murder attempt is committed on Amazon Eve. He sneaks into her trailer in the middle of the night and tries to hold a handkerchief soaked in poison over her face. The Amazon queen is a fighter though and she ends up beating the living fuck out of Del. #YOUGOGIRL!!!! This attempt ended up being an epic failure – not only is Del’s secret possibly going to be revealed, but now the entire troupe hates him even more. Sweet Jimmy tells the ladies of the camp that he’s going to have a man to man talk with Del and they end up at a bar to have a drink. One shot turns into another shot which turns into telling the bar tender to leave the bottle. This leads to a lot of drunken sentimental blabbering and Jimmy getting sick. He runs out of the bar into the alley way to hurl which is when Del takes another stab at murdering a freak. And in case you’ve forgotten, this freak is Del’s SON. Mr. Toledo has a brick in his hand when Jimmy turns around and says something unexpected which majorly throws Del off. Jimmy tells him that he’s always known that he was his father. “I always knew from the way mom hated you.” Jimmy then pleads to his father to admit his paternity. It was insanely heartbreaking but finally Del admits that Jimmy is his son. After this touching moment is shared, Del grows a heart for a bit and has some quality father/son drunky pants time. They approach the camp grounds singing old circus songs and Del tucks his inebriated son into bed. “I’m gonna say something I’ve never said in my whole life,” Jimmy says. “Goodnight, Dad…..can you say goodnight when it’s still morning?” So. Precious.

Penny (orgy girl) and her new makeover: This shit honestly broke my heart. Saying that Miss Penny’s dad is over bearing and over protective is an understatement. He’s basically a Nazi. The sweet girl has been tending to an injured Paul at the freak show and we find her sneaking into her own home to pack up her belongings to live with Paul for good. After a harsh exchanging of words her father introduces an extremely decorated tattoo artist to do a little work on his daughter. While Penny was drugged and unconscious the tattoo artist decorated her face and neck with tattoos that looked like snake scales. Once she woke up her dad forced a mirror into her face to see her new look. “Stick out your tongue,” her dad laughs, “I’ve had it forked!” This man essentially turned his own daughter into a snake. Bastard. The traumatized young lady then goes back to the freak show to be comforted by Paul who only ends up blaming himself for this gruesome assault.

The murder of Ma Petite: Yep. Del needed a victim to prevent Stanley’s blackmail, and it ended up being our sweet tiny princess. Towards the end of the episode we find Del in Ma Petite’s tent with a present. A brand new dress. “Pretty! I can’t wait to try it on!” The sweetheart exclaims. She gets her little self out of bed to put on her lovely new gown. “Zip me!” She says to Del. He tells Ma Petite that she looks “gorgeous. Like a little princess.” She did. She lifts up her arms the way a child does so that she can hug Del. He lifts her up to embrace her and ends up breaking her neck. He whispers “it’s going to be alright” into her ears as he kills her, and when she finally died he said “I’m sorry.” The episode ends with the unveiling of the Ma Petite exhibit at the freak show museum in town. The little princess is wearing her brand new dress in her glass jar.

So there you have it, tonight’s episode in a nut shell! A lot of really sad stuff happened tonight. Ma Petite’s death bummed me out immensely, because I adored her. She was just so precious and it made me very sad to see her body floating around in a jar at the end of the episode. Another thing that really upset me was the facial tattooing of Penny. The fact that her dad seemed to experience pleasure at the sight of his daughter in pain really disturbed me. That’s all I wish to say on that matter. We also learned one final important thing tonight: The Toledo Code: The first minute you let a women tell you what to do is the minute you hand your balls over to her. Words of wisdom right there, folks. -______-
