The Subtle Art Of Saying Hi To Spring

Standard
The Subtle Art Of Saying Hi To Spring

Now, we know it isn’t technically spring yet, but the sun is shining, the birds are singing, and we have a sunny disposition that we don’t want to disappear, which is why we’ve been thinking long and hard about how we can start welcoming spring into our home a little more (even though we are still deep in winter).

Don’t get us wrong, we love the cuddly-snuggly effects of the winter months. But wouldn’t it be amazing if you could embrace the coziness and get rid of some of that gloom that the long nights bring with it? With that in mind, we have come up with a few little ways you can start to introduce the spring back into your winter home. Baby-steps, of course. Baby steps.

Freshen Up With Flowers:

Nothing brightens a space up more than pretty bunches of fresh flowers dotted about. Okay, maybe lights but, other than that, nothing brightens somewhere up quite as much. The moment you add flowers to a table or a counter top you are giving it a gorgeous facelift. Bathrooms, bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, kitchens – they can all be decorated with flowers. Of course, you don’t want to go over the top, which is why we recommend you stick to one color (for now) and cut them short. That way it’s subtle.

The Scent Of Spring:

Scents have a huge influence on the way a home feels. Just think about it for a second or two. The smell of fall is pumpkin-spiced lattes, winter is home-cooked meals, and summer is watermelons and whatnot. Scents are powerful things, and that is why you need to buy a new scent machine. It is a really subtle way to take your home away from the colder months and into a fresher existence. It is a blast of cleanliness and yum. Basically, don’t underestimate the power of a smell. Ever.

You Can Rely On Retro:

Now, you may be thinking to yourself, “what on earth has retro got to do with spring?” And it’s a valid question. But the reason it works is because the retro era was all about bright vintage hues – yellows, oranges, pinks, turquoise, and even browns. That means, if you drop little bits in, such as a retro-inspired rug, or a few cushions, or even a retro rocking chair, you can create a tidy little backdrop of color. You can add a splash of wow that brightens up your home. It’s lovely.

Eclectic Excellence:

Nothing says, “hey, spring’s here” more than a bit of eclecticism. It’s about mixing things up a bit. It’s about unleashing your inner funk and doing things that you would associate with spring. If you like what you’ve heard so far and want to know more, then try mixing a few different things together; make a display out of brightly colored vases and bold flower arrangements, mix a load of patterned cushions together on your sofa, see what cheap artwork you can get on Etsy, and go to your nearest thrift store to see if they have any books with bright covers. Eclectic is cool and it quickly brightens up any space.

Although spring is far away, there is nothing wrong with brightening up your home spring cleaning style! Smell the fresh cut flowers and get to it!

Helpful Hints To Decorate A Wood Paneled House

Helpful Hints To Decorate A Wood Paneled House

Wood paneling is coming back in a big way. It’s rustic and very cozy, for one. Plus, because of its popularity, wood can add value to a house. Anyone looking to sell up soon could take a calculated risk to increase the price of their home. However, it’s not all picnics and rainbows. Firstly, paneling can be hard to decorate as it’s stubborn. It isn’t as if you can transform the style because wood is wood. And, ripping it out and starting again isn’t a smart idea because it’s a waste of time and money.

The realization might make you think “what am I going to do?!” To begin with, don’t panic. Secondly, you might want to have a glance at the advice below. Here are the helpful hints which should lend a hand when it comes to decorating a wood-paneled property:

Hide It:

For those of you who just can’t stand the panels, it’s time to take away its pop. Walls seem as if they are impossible to change barring a splash of paint due to their size. However, don’t forget that you can easily hide them with large, bulky furniture. A bookcase is a fantastic piece that will take the focus from the wood. You and your guests will be too busy leafing through the novels on the shelf to realize there are panels behind the books. Cases of dead trees aren’t the only things which can help, either. On a bookshelf, antiques and traditional home ware can be as effective at obscuring the wall. Never stack as many bits and pieces on a shelf as books, though, because it looks cluttered. The best option is to choose five or six items and space them out along the rack.

Splash Of Paint:

Wood has a deep, warm feel to it which can be troublesome. Not only is it dark, but some homeowners find totally unappealing. Gutting the house isn’t an option as it’s costly and time-consuming. The good news is that paint can be a wonderful way to transform paneling, and it doesn’t break the bank. All you have to do is choose a color of your choice and start brushing. For example, a white or cream is a fantastic option for anyone who wants to add light to their property. Even better, wood soaks up paint so the walls take on a textured look after the fact. An overlay can also change the style. White panels make a house feel as if it is now a comfy little cottage on the edge of town.

Alter The Direction

Lots of homes have panels which run one way: vertically. The readers who double as fashionistas will know that the direction of a shape can impact the style. It’s the worst kept secret in the world that horizontal stripes make a person seem fat. In the home, across running lines are not putters on of pounds but a source of contrast. To begin with, it’s hard not to notice the fact that they lie flat and don’t run up and down. Although you may not realize it now, your mind subconsciously thinks of stripes as moving in one direction. Secondly, everything in the room will run the other way. Drapes, blinds, light fixtures, and lampshades – they all stand vertically tall. As the panels go the other way, the contrast should be striking. Hopefully, the wood boards are just glued on so that you can prize them off and modify the style. If not, you will have to be very careful not to ruin the panels.

So pretty!!

Embrace It:

Let’s not pretend like wood panels don’t look amazing. Everyone has been to a house that used boards and thought “I wish my house were this pretty”. The issue is embracing the style and making it work. Although it looks fantastic, wood paneling can be a tricky statement to get just right. One useful hack is to concentrate on a single room. The bedroom, for instance, might have boards running across the walls. If so, use it as a guinea pig before you attempt to revolutionize the entire house. On your bedroom shopping list, you will want hardwood or faux floors, a lumber dresser, and timber wardrobes. That way, the furniture fits in with the rest of the room perfectly. Also, resist the urge to cover up the panels when possible. Instead, stain them and let the wood stand out as the focal point of your boudoir.

Make A Statement:

Along the same lines is the idea of sectioning off an area of a room. For instance, you use a corner of the living room rather than use panels throughout. It’s a straightforward task as long as you find the ultimate location. Lots of homeowners like to squirrel wood away in the corner, which is a smart plan. Wood is a strong material, so it won’t blend in to the point that no one notices its existence. However, it won’t overpower the rest of the pieces, either. A lumber cabinet is a fantastic addition because it looks beautiful while taking up hard to reach space. What’s more, using wood in this way makes it seem special because it has a novelty value. Like the tip above, making a statement tries to find a delicate balance between differing trends.

Choose Soft Accessories:

Because wood dominates, it’s vital to soften the look with accessories. These can range from window dressing to furniture. The pieces don’t matter too much, but their colors do as they add light contrast and texture. As always, white is a fantastic addition to a dark room, as are creams. However, don’t forget about the effectiveness of light blues and yellows. One way to make sure the balance is just right is to use light colors little and often. For instance, homes which pull off the look tend to incorporate light furniture as it’s bulky. Therefore, the pieces stand out more than, say, a coffee table. Drapes are another great choice as they are long and billowy. As a result, it makes the room feel cool and airy as well as light.

Time To Tile:

One of the excellent traits of paneling is that it doesn’t clash with alternative trends. Usually, a strong material like wood would be the only texture in the room, but it isn’t the case here. Due to its flexibility, you can use numerous fashions in one space. Wallpaper is a fine example as it’s coming back in a big way. Tile, however, has to be the most wonderful companion. Tiles add a sense of modernity to a room due to the fact that they are sleek and clean. Also, their thickness adds a new texture which boosts the contrast. When they are put together, the two styles look amazing, especially with a roll or two of wallpaper.

Wood paneling can be something which you want to ditch ASAP. That’s fine because it may not be your bag, baby. But, just know it is possible to incorporate it into any dream house, even your own!

Bath Bomb Blitz: Xmas Gift Pt. 2 Edition

Bath Bomb Blitz: Xmas Gift Pt. 2 Edition

Howdy! Today we are going to talk about the other bath bomb that my BFF gifted me for Christmas. It was a lovely purple and pink one with a Jasmine Rose scent. Although I am not big on either fragrance, this bath bomb was super pleasant to use and I LOVED the color that it made the bath water. And the dried rose petals were definitely a luxurious added bonus! Take a look and let’s discuss:

roserose1rose3rose4rose5rose6

Even though the Cran Orange bath bomb from yesterday’s post was fun, I think that I like the Jasmine Rose one better. I didn’t get any hints of Jasmine at all when I put the bath bomb in the water, it just gave off this soft floral scent that was really pretty. Speaking of pretty, the lavender hue that my water turned into looked so gorgeous and I loved seeing the rose petals and pink glitter swirling around. It made me feel so lux and pampered!

I officially have no more bath bombs to use and now I am craving going to Lush something fierce! Taking baths is one of my favorite ways to relax and bath bombs just add to the R&R in the best way possible. I never thought that I would find myself wanting to go to Lush so badly, but here we are now, and some of their bath bombs sound like the perfect way to treat myself. 😀

What is your favorite Lush product? How do you make your bath time luxurious? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Bath Bomb Blitz: Xmas Gift Edition

This is Bath Bomb Blitz, this is Bath Bomb Blitz, lalala – sung to the tune of Ballroom Blitz, anyone? No? Lol, didn’t think so. Anyways, my BFF got me some homemade bath bombs from a craft show for Christmas, which I was very excited about because I haven’t used one in a while. I’ve used some really good homemade bath bombs before and some really bad ones, so I was a bit ambivalent about what I was getting into, but ended up being pleasantly surprised. Take a look and let’s discuss:

bbbbbb1bbb3bbb4bbb5

First of all, the Cran Orange scent was delicious. As soon as I popped the bath bomb in the water, you got an instant waft of orange-y goodness. And I do love me my citrus scents! And, although the water looks pretty murky in the pictures, it was actually a really pretty medium-peach color and that was fun to soak in. Not to mention the red glitter as an added visual bonus!

This was by far the best homemade bath bomb that I’ve used before. Did it fizz as long as a bath bomb from Lush? No. But it lasted for at least a minute, which is pretty good for a homemade treat. The fragrance used was nice and strong and the soft color of the water made me feel so relaxed. Am I the biggest fan of glitter? No. Cleaning it up afterwards is a pain in the behind. But the red and orange combination looked so pretty that I didn’t even mind it! 😀

Who likes to home make bath and body care products? Does anyone have a favorite recipe that they use? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Helloooo everyone! Today we are going to talk about a fabulous new scarf from my Holiday Haul compliments of my mom and Mr. Steve Madden. One thing that I love is really cool galaxy prints, and a scarf of the like caught my eye when my mom and I were shopping at TJMaxx. Other things trumped purchasing the scarf, and I had all but forgotten about it until Christmas day. Take a look and let’s discuss:

It turns out that my mom went back to TJMaxx the following day to get this here scarf for me, because I did like it a lot! I was so surprised when I opened this present, because it was so thoughtful and sweet of my mom to make the trip back there just for one thing. I love all of the planets, stars, and different colors of this Steve Madden scarf. It’s such a fun pattern but it still looks chic and I can picture myself wearing it to work with a crisp white button down to let all of the planets pop!

I love bold accessories, like this scarf, because your outfit doesn’t need much afterwards. Throw on a cute pair of black booties and a sweet peacoat and you’re out the door in no time. This scarf is also perfect for playing around with makeup while wearing it, thanks to all of the gorgeous different colors featured in it. A navy smokey eye would look lovely or even a metallic liner for a cool galaxy pop.

Accessory Story: Betsey Johnson Edition

Hello!!! Basically all of my favorite gifts this Holiday Haul came from my sister, Kristen. Although our personal styles are very different, she always seems to know exactly what I would like. I like to think that the same goes for me, and it makes me feel good that we are close enough to pick out a slam dunk of a present every single time. This Christmas, Kristen treated me to a necklace from one of my favorite designers, Betsey Johnson. Take a look and let’s discuss:

haul2haul3

If there’s one thing that a Lil Red loves, it’s skulls on clothing and accessories. Normal old skulls, skeletons, sugar skulls – I love it all. I have already worn my gorgeous blinged out sugar skull necklace so many times and it seriously makes every single OOTD pop. I love the heart eyes, the flowers, and the ribbon threaded through the chain. It’s such a fun piece and it is SO obviously Betsey Johnson, which is what I love about her brand.

This necklace looks so pretty when it hits just above a V-neck top or against one of my many black sweaters. The pastel colors really make a statement, and it’s a fun edition to my wardrobe because I don’t have a lot of clothes or accessories in a pastel palette. Kristen took one of my favorite patterns and favorite designers and ran with it, and seriously hit the nail so hard on the head with this beautiful necklace. I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!! :*)

So there you have it, the next issue in my Holiday Haul with an Accessory Story: Betsey Johnson Edition! Who was gifted with jewelry this year? Who is your favorite designer? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Howdy! So Facebook has this weird thing where it shows you EVERYTHING THAT YOU’VE EVER WANTED in their ads. It’s insane. Shoes that I overlooked but still liked, ModCloth clothes, Forever 21 accessories – all things that Lil Red loves but have yet to buy. So, imagine the distress of scrolling through Facebook and having the devil tempt you at every turn! I’m not too mad about it, though, because these new bootie beauties came from the aforementioned hardship! Take a look and let’s discuss:

When I saw the ad for these Forever 21 platform boots, I fell head over heels in love (Pun intended!). And, somehow Facebook knows about my ballin on a budget lifestyle, because these shoes were only twenty-five bucks! #blessed Platform shoes became big this summer, and I am obviously not over the trend, because I still feel the urge to buy every single pair that I encounter. Seriously, how could I say no to shoes that would keep my feet warm with the flame decals this winter anyways?! 😉

I recently paired these shoes with my new Karl Lagerfeld button down, black skinnies, a moto jacket, and my favorite Stevie Nicks scarf to accessorize. And, let me tell you, I was really feeling myself, lol. I felt so posh, fun, and fierce strutting around in an edgy outfit with these disco fab platforms on my feet. The compliments that came rolling in didn’t hurt the cause, either! My new Forever 21 boots are the perfect way to add some cheeky fun to any look with an ode to 70s glam and I am so thankful to Facebook for tapping into my brain so that I could find them. Now, please cut it out so that I can stop spending money! THANKS.

If The Shoe Fits: Catherine Malandrino Edition

Howdy! Winter makes me go a bit stir crazy when I’m bundled indoors against the cold and because of that, online shopping turns into my favorite inclement weather hobby. So, instead, I go shoe crazy. Ba dum chhhhhh! A TJMaxx haul brought me these b-e-a-utiful Catherine Malandrino four buckled beauties and I am obsessed. Take a look and let’s discuss:

cathcath3cath1

When it comes to booties, I am typically sold if they are black, buckled, and bedazzled in some way and these shoes have it all. The sleek black color against a rougher texture, the four buckles going across the shoe, the studs to add even more edge. Woof – what a shoe success! I am also partial to these booties having a slight lifted heel so that I don’t feel like a complete fish out of water on flat feet! Thanks, Catherine Malandrino. ❤

I am stoked to wear these booties during the cold weather, but I am actually more looking forward to wearing them during the summer. These babies are going to look so badass with a pair of short shorts, a panama hat, and a faux fur vest over a graphic tee for a really funky warm weather OOTD. I. Can’t. Wait. There’s nothing better than buying an item with styling potential and, man, have these boots got it. I can’t wait to expand my wardrobe horizons with them and enjoy it fully with all of the buckled badness that these shoes deliver!

If The Shoe Fits: Bamboo Beauties Edition

Hello hello and happy day after Christmas! I hope that everyone had a beautiful day celebrating and enjoyed their time spent with family and loved ones. Stay tuned here on lifewithlilred for my holiday haul and December finishes! Today, we are going to talk about a pair of Bamboo platform booties that I have been lusting after for a while now. The color is red, the heel is high, and the pattern is to die for. Take a look and let’s discuss:

bamb1bamb4bamb3

As I mentioned above, I’ve been obsessed with these shoes for a lifetime, so an online TJMaxx haul meant that I finally got to bring these babies home to mama. These high to the heavens heels with a geisha girl inspired pattern gives me so much life. The divine embroidery, the shiny red fabric, and could be on a kimono style. Ugh, everything about these Bamboo shoes is perfect.

Styling these booties is going to be a lot of fun because you could go simple with them or get totally wild. For a simple look, I would pair these shoes with an all black everything ensemble, which would include black skinnies, an oversized boyfriend blazer, and a black sweater underneath for a coffee house chic look. Then, for something more fun, I would pair my booties with one of my favorite Loft tops featuring paper fans and my mustard yellow A-line skirt for a funky but fabulous work or play OOTD. The possibilities are completely endless!

If The Shoe Fits: Lil Red Booties Edition

Hi hi hi! One brand of shoes that I really love is Bamboo. I have several pairs of their heels, platforms, and booties, and just added on to my collection with two new pairs. One of which includes these gorgeous red, heeled, pointed toe boots with a surprise in the back. Take a look and let’s discuss:

bamboo3bamboo1bamboo2

One would think that Lil Red would have tons of red shoes, but the sad truth is that I only own one other pair. So, naturally, when I saw these shoes on TJMaxx’s website, I had to indulge like the Maxxinista that I am. Of course, I was sold on the color but I simply loved the pointed toe and the surprise tasseled zipper in the back! Not only is it a faux suede material but there are also delicate golden chains thrown into the mix for good measure and I am so in love. How fun is that?!

I loved pairing my other red pair of heels with one of my many mustard yellow colored dresses so these bootie babes will be no exception. They will also make a great addition to my Christmas wardrobe with an emerald green (Or any green!) top or sweater for a festively fab look. In fact, it’s just been decided two seconds ago that that is what I will be wearing for Christmas! Happy Christmas Eve, ya’ll! ❤
