Hello, It’s Me!

Hey there everyone and happy Sunday! I hope all of you are having a wonderful and relaxing weekend. I’ve noticed that I haven’t put up a whole lot of pictures of me on the ol’ blog lately. To remedy that, I had my dad break out his prized camera and snap some pictures of me during this past week. We shot some pictures outside and as you can see, Ohio got quite a bit of snow! (So much so that I was snowed in at home for an afternoon!) We also took some pics on our cool, color blocked hallway for your viewing pleasure. Take a look:

^^^ Thanks, dad! ❤

What I Wore:

  • Featured Image Jacket: This was one of my Christmas gifts, compliments of Target. You can read all about it in my post, New Coat Heaven.
  • Killin’ It Hoodie: My hoodie dress is one of my all time favorite Forever 21 finds which you can read about in my Monday Update: Forever 21 Haul Edition.
  • Black Skinnies: I got these from Express about a year or so ago. They used to have the coolest snakeskin pattern printed on them but unfortunately it faded away after over a year of washing. -_-
  • Zipper Front Heels: These babies are one of my steals that I got from Kohl’s a while back ago which you can read about in, If The Shoe Fits – Apt. 9 Edition.
  • Teal Fingerless Gloves: My glovies are one of my favorite accessories that I own. My mom got these for me from TJMaxx when I was in high school. It was on a day that I didn’t feel like going to school so we went shopping instead! I love them just as much now as I did when I first got them.

It was so nice to be able to spend the afternoon being photographed by my dear old dad. He definitely shot some winners and it was a great way to spend time together! How has everyone’s weekend been? What kind of weather are you having in your neck of the woods right now? I wanna hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Monday Update: Forever 21 Haul Edition

Hi everyone and happy Monday! Last weekend my mom and I ventured to one of the bigger malls that my area of Ohio has to offer, Southpark Mall in Strongsville. We rarely go to Southpark and the last time that I went was years ago. The mall is absolutely gigantic and we went during the holiday season last time around so needless to say, it was quite overwhelming. Last week we went just to change things up a little bit and I died and went to Forever 21 heaven. Their store was huge! Take a look at my latest goodies from my most recent shopping trip:

^^^ I’m a fan.

As all of you know, Lil Red rocks all black everything more often than not so when I saw these edgy hoodie dresses, I knew that they had to be mine. When I used to work at an urban clothing store called Next, they carried the brand HBA (Hood By Air) and I was obsessed. I think that these hoodies are very reminiscent of HBA which is one of the many reasons why I like them so much. Plus, they were infinitely cheaper which was an added bonus! For both of these hoodie dresses I paid fifty dollars which is a quarter of the price of one HBA top. Score!

Usually I’m not one to gravitate towards hoodies or sweatshirts. I much prefer sharp sweaters, tops, or jackets. However, I really liked that these hoodies both went down below the normal at the hip length. The “Killin’ It” sweat dress went down to a little below my knees and the “In High Demand” zip up went down to my calves. This automatically made them way more edgy to me and it created endless styling possibilities.

The great thing about these hoodie dresses, asides from how cute they are, is all of the different outfits that you can wear with them. I tried the sweat dresses on over my black skinnies which worked really well but the possibilities are endless! I can’t wait to wear them with nothing underneath as a real dress or with a pair of opaque or sheer black tights. I also plan on wearing the “In High Demand” dress with the zipper undone to show off a cute pair of shorts and top in the summer. I really like pieces that you can wear all year round so that you can get creative with how you style it!

I’m so aware that these sweat dresses are really similar to each other but I couldn’t pick just one to save my life! I know that if I chose only one that I would be thinking about the hoodie that I left behind for forever. I’m also really glad that I did buy both because when my boyfriend and I went to the mall that he lives by, I popped in the Forever 21 there and they didn’t have either of them! That made me even happier with my decision.

I’ve worn both of my hoodie dresses multiple times already and I can’t get enough of them. I like that these pieces are both amazingly comfortable but they by no means sacrifice style while wearing them. The “Killin’ It” sweat dress is so fun and I had to laugh because I wore it on Thursday night when I was coaching figure skating for the Special Olympics and we just happened to be taking photos that day. I’m sure all of the pictures that I’m in turned out really swell since I’m rockin a hoodie with “Killin’ It” plastered across the front!

As I write this post I’m wearing my “In High Demand” zip up over a pair of black skinnies and a graphic baseball tee and it certainly spruces up the outfit! It also keeps me nice and warm because it’s very chilly in my neck of the woods today. I’m so pleased with my latest purchases and I can’t wait to wear them for many seasons to come. Thanks, Forever 21! ❤

So there you have it, this week’s Monday Update: Forever 21 Haul Edition! I hope all of you are having a wonderful start to your week so far. How was everyone’s weekend? Who has recently snagged some cute new clothes while shopping? I wanna hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Letter To Myself; A Reflection

Letter To Myself; A Reflection

Hey there everyone and happy Sunday! I hope all of you are having a fabulous Memorial Day weekend! I don’t know if you recall, but alllllllll the way back at the end of October, I wrote a post called “Letter To Myself”. The post contained the letter that we had to write ourselves in my very first college class at Tri-C. We had to address an envelope to ourselves, and our teacher told us that she would mail us our letters before the beginning of summer. I received my letter in the mail yesterday, and I thought it would be fun to put it on lifewithlilred one more time and reflect on it. So here is my letter to myself, which was written on October 28th, 2014:

Dear Future Sarah,

First of all, let me say how proud I am of you. You had a goal of going to college way back in September, and you achieved that. I trust that as you read this now you’re well on your way to earning your Associate of Arts degree. My wish for your entire future, from the time you read this now until the day you die – is that you continue to do things that make you happy. That can be anything: From theater, which you love so much, or blogging, or even pursuing a higher degree in school. As long as you’re doing something that you love, you’re succeeding. I hope that as the months go by you recognize all of the potential that people constantly tell you that you have. You are worthy of a beautiful life. I know in the past you had a hard time believing that, and I hope someday you can truly believe and embrace that yourself. I also would like to remind you of how far you’ve come in your life. It’s not a bad thing to remember your not so great past and celebrate the milestones that you have accomplished, even in your darkest times. You are beautiful inside and out – take pride in who you are because you matter. You are important. You are capable of greatness.

With all of my love,

Sarah

^^^ Isn’t that precious?

When I read this letter again for the first time in over half a year, I was so touched by everything that my past tense self said to me. The thing that stuck out the most was when I wrote that “as long as you’re doing something that you love, you’re succeeding.” I really think that my past tense self was on to something, because present day Sarah has never loved anything as much as being in school in a long time. For once in my life, I feel really good about myself and where I’m at. It makes me so happy to have my friends and family tell me how proud they are of me or how good I’m doing and for me to actually believe that. Before I would have just laughed them off with a “yeah right” but now I can actually look them in the eye and thank them, because I’m firm in the belief that I am doing awesome. Starting college was the best decision that I’ve made in a long time, and I’m so proud of myself for following through with all of my classes and having amazing grades to show for it. (Straight A’s for days!) I’m so excited to start my summer classes on Tuesday, and receiving my letter to myself was the extra push I needed to get my mind back in school mode! I’m ready to take on the world and I’m ready to kick major ass this summer! #ballin

^^^ Obsessed! I’ve been listening to The Used every day for the past two weeks and I’m so not mad about it!

What is everyone up to on their Memorial Day weekend? Have any of you written a letter to yourself before? I wanna hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

WHAT EVEN?!

Hellooo everyone and Happy Cinco de Mayo! Guyyyyys I’m freaking out! Guess who has two thumbs and got over a 100% on my last math quiz AND test?! THIS BITCH!!! I got my most recent math test back at school today and almost had a heart attack when I saw my 105% score. Never have I ever had a math teacher tell me that they were proud of me before, and that changed today. I legitimately could have cried. Check it out:

smarty

^^^ WHAT EVEN??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I felt pretty confident about both the test and the quiz that are pictured above – but getting over 100% on both of them? Me? The girl who used to fucking suck at math? The girl whose high school teachers had to hella curve her grade to make sure she didn’t fail? Not that girl. Impossible. WELL GUESS WHAT?! IT IS POSSIBLE!!!! I’m seriously on cloud nine right now. These perfect scores have shown me just how much hard work pays off and I’m so proud of myself I white girl can’t even. Not only does my teacher have so much confidence and faith in me, but so do my classmates. They’re always commenting on how smart I am and how well I do and you guys have no idea how good that makes me feel. What an amazing transformation from the high school failure to the college smartypants – sweet jesus!!

Alright! I must be off, but I really wanted to let the world know about my school success! TRI-C REPRESENT!!! I hope all of you guys are having a fabulous day! Drink lots and lots of margaritas for Cinco de Mayo – HOLLA! What are you guys doing to celebrate? Are you getting wasteypants???! I wanna hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Monday Update: Doing Good Feeling Great Edition

Whatsup guys and Happy Monday! I don’t know about you, but I’m having a really awesome day so far! I’m doing good AND feeling great! I’m feeling completely healthy, which is cool because my stint with the flu left me with a bit of a cold that’s finally no longer. My weekend was fantastic, so I’m still in a good mood from that. AND school is going swimmingly…homegirl has straight A’s for days in all of my classes! Hurrah! Something that I’m feeling particularly happy about is an email that I got from my College Composition II professor today. I’m taking that class online and have never met my professor in real life. We’re nearing the end of our semester and we have an option to either meet up with her on campus or email her some questions for our conference on our final research paper. I wanted to meet up with her in person to discuss a few things, but unfortunately our times on campus never intercept with each other. I emailed her to let her know I’d be emailing her my conference questions and she replied back that was disappointed because she was really looking forward to meeting me in person. I was so flattered by this! I don’t know this woman from anyone, and the fact that our online interactions were positive enough for her to feel sad that we wouldn’t get to meet up in real life really means a lot to me. Our usual interactions are limited to her comments on my essays and homework and the occasional emails back and forth, so the fact that she finds my writing impressive and our little chit chats enjoyable makes me feel so good. I know that it’s a little thing, but it’s amazing how something so small can set such a positive tone for the rest of the day. Now that I know that my professor was looking forward to meeting Lil Red in all of my real life glory I plan on sticking around on campus on the day that we miss each other by an hour so I can see her. Call me a kiss ass or whatever, but if waiting around at school for an hour is what it takes for us to have a brief meeting, then I’m more than happy to do so! Yay school!

^^^My current blogging soundtrack! Enjoy! 😉

So I watched The Theory Of Everything last night as I mentioned in my Lil Red Pro Tips post and it was phenomenal…just as I expected. 😉 And in case you were wondering, my lava cake dessert that I was baking as I was blogging yesterday was SO delicious! It was a hit with my entire family, and it’s almost all gone already! We served it with our chosen combination of strawberries, whipped cream, and ice cream and it was nothing short of orgasmic….hey, every girl needs a good chocolate fix!

I hope all of you are having a great day! I’m off to finish some homework really quick before I get my haircut. Mama is getting super shaggy and I am so not okay with it! Where are my fans of The Following at? How excited are you for tonight’s new episode?! BTW – did you catch that they used Akron, Ohio (AKA Lil Red’s hometown #represent) as a reference point in last week’s episode?! So cool. Any questions? Concerns? I wanna hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Monday Update: Spring Break Edition!!!

Standard
Monday Update: Spring Break Edition!!!

Whatupppp. First and foremost, Happy Monday. Secondly, welcome to my week of spring break/killin the game! I have been getting SO much homework done, and it’s been so fulfilling! I never thought I would live to see the day that I would be saying that! In my College Composition II course we have a big final research paper that’s due at the end of the semester. I thought that my spring break would be the perfect time to get a leg up on all of the work so that I’m not scrambling around like a chicken without its head on during the final days before the paper is due. For the paper we had to pick a problem in the good ol’ USA and what we suggest should be done to solve it. I chose to write about why there should be stricter policies for bullying in schools. I’ll tell you what guys, I’ve read some very sick shit these past few days of finding resources. It’s definitely put a damper on my day already…for godsakes it’s only 1:30 in the afternoon and I feel like I need a drink! Despite how upsetting the topic is, it has proven to be very interesting. I’m just happy that I’m getting a lot done so I can relax a bit around the end of the semester, because I sold my soul to summer classes and god knows I’ll need a little R&R before those start. I registered last night to take Beginning Algebra II, Social Psychology, Intro to Sociology, and a history course. I’m not gonna lie, I’m feeling a little overwhelmed just thinking about it. The summer classes are going to move quickly, and I’m taking thirteen credit hours. I decided to take the next math course in my college journey since I’m already taking the first one now so everything will still be fresh in my noggin. I then opted for another psych class because I’m slaying my General Psychology course this semester. The Sociology course seems easy enough, so I feel like that one should be pretty stress free. And I enjoy history a lot so I shouldn’t have too much of a problem there. All of these courses other than math seem easy enough, so I figured I might as well get them out of the way now. The fact that the summer classes do move at a faster pace is intimidating, but because three out of the four classes I’m taking are things that I enjoy, I think that I should be fine. Fingers crossed anyways! And if I genuinely feel like I can’t handle it (which I doubt), I can always drop a class. It’s just kind of a bummer that the summer of my twenty-first birthday will be spent doing a butt load of school work. -__- But that’s okay, because my education is more important than getting white girl wasted will ever be…..I can’t believe I just said that. Hello, adulthood. Anyways, I’m not up to too much on my break, but that’s totally fine by me. It’s been so nice to stay up as late as I want, wake up whenever I want, not put on makeup, and spend all day watching Netflix. It’s honestly been a dream come true! I’ll definitely be up to some fun stuff this break though! The weather is warming up in good ol’ Akron, Ohio so leaving the house won’t be a complete pain in the ass. 😉 I have many coffee dates, hang outs, and a trip to the zoo planned so it should all be simply delightful. I also need to get some shopping done this break, because I have three birthdays coming up that I need to buy gifts for: both of my parents and my sister. I LOVE present shopping so it should be a good time! 😀

^^ I’ve been on a big Clay Your Hands Say Yeah kick as of late, so enjoy!

Well, this procrastination post has been fun, but I have a few more things to finish up before I can call it quits on school work for the day! Where are my fans of The Following at? How excited are you for the new episode tonight?! I for one can’t wait! What’s everyone up to today? Do you have a wild spring break story you can share with me? I’d love to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Have a great day! -Sarah

In A Broken World

In A Broken World

Whatuppppp guys! Today I have the pleasure of writing for one of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio’s immensely talented upcoming bands In A Broken World. (Cfalls happens to be my hometown! #REPRESENT!!) If you’re into thought provoking lyrics, gorgeous screaming as well as vocals, AND a heavy dose of metal – these guys are the band for you. In A Broken World was formed back in March of 2014 by a great group of dudes, one of which happens to be my dear friend (and vocalist!) CJ. Just saying right now – I know this kids speaking voice like the back of my hand, and the things he can do vocally and screaming wise are so impressive! As you guys well know…mama likes her screamo. I was lucky enough to have a copy of their debut EP “For Those Like You” burned right in front of me by CJ in my beloved Starbucks…it was very legit. 😉 More importantly, I was absolutely blown away by their music while I was playing it on the way to school. Best believe that some head banging occurred in the Little Red Love Machine! “For Those Like You” is only four songs long, but that was long enough to get a great feel for who these guys are as a band and what to expect for albums to come.

The EP game starts out strong, opening with the three minute banger “Charade”, which offers one of my favorite things that a metal song can do, which is provide a break in the screaming and go into some stunning vocalizing. It was very Of Mice & Men-esque. One of the great things about In A Broken World’s Facebook page (which I will provide!) is that they provide all of their lyrics for those of you who can’t understand the screaming, so I really enjoyed reading through everything that these guys had to say. “Charade” boasts some lyrical winners such as: “I want to run from all the lies, and get lost inside my mind.” Very nice. What I was particularly struck by while listening to all of their songs, was how completely solid the band is as a whole. Everything from the insane guitaring, drumming, and vocals were SO in synch with each other. The amount of practice and hard work that went into all of these tracks is beyond evident. There was not one point when I was listening to “For Those Like You” that I detected the slightest hint of sloppiness, whether it be in the music itself or the production of it. That’s definitely saying a lot, because I’ve heard many a local bands EP albums that sound like they were straight up recorded on someones phone. The level of professionalism in the production of “For Those Like You” is very impressive for a fairly new local band.

cj

The following song “For Those Like You” is one that I’m particularly excited for. When I spoke to CJ a few days ago, this was the one track that held the deepest meaning to him and it’s so evident through the emotional content of the song. A major shout out is in order for the guitarists of In A Broken World, Daniel and Cody because they absolutely annihilate this track. And PLEASE don’t even get me going on the drumming by Brad, because this kid holds it down and provides such a solid base for all of the songs. Do yourselves a favor and read the lyrics as you’re listening to this track, because like I said – the emotional content is ALL there. These words invoke the feeling of disappointment (which is something that I hate the most) so perfectly:

You said you were OK
You said you were happy
You’re lying to yourself
You made a big mistake

^I love that one!

2233

I’m not sure if you guys are aware of this, but there’s a celebrity appearance made on “The Unfaithful” by none other than the legend himself….Ron Burgundy. #stayclassy The track opens with a message from the mustached myth which I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at in amusement. Once you’re done having a chuckle, let’s just talk about the vocals on this track – because I find them the strongest on this song. The ranges that are hit on top of the fast pace of the track earns a tip of the cap from Lil Red. “The Unfaithful” offers a lot of really classic metal sounds, particularly in the guitars that I appreciated. I actually got a strong System Of A Down vibe from this track thanks to the high pitched screaming that I love so very much, so that was a nice touch.

44

“For Those Like You” closes with the second longest song “The River of Lies”, which is my personal favorite. Recently I’ve been listening to a lot of Dance Club Massacre and this song definitely reminded me of them. My whole thing with metal music is that there has to be constant change ups in the sound in general for me to appreciate it. I can’t stand when bands stick to one particular sound of screaming or instrumentals, and I also can’t stand when the transition into different sounds isn’t sharp. When it gets to that point, all it sounds like is noise to me. In A Broken World defies all of these pet peeves in a maturity well beyond their not even a year of playing together. Their transitions are SO smooth, like BUTTA! “The River of Lies” ends this short and sweet EP on such a high note and closes the album with the appropriate lyrics of:

Let’s finish out strong together
I’ll help you put the pieces back
This is not the end for you.

^If that’s not motivation to get up and do something…or at least head bang a little – then I don’t know what is.

In A Broken World’s Facebook page provides you with some great photos from previous shows, band updates, and videos and can be seen at: https://www.facebook.com/inabrokenworldofficial I urge all of you to give them a like and send them your support from wherever you are in the world!

ALSO, the link to their bandcamp page is: http://inabrokenworld.bandcamp.com/album/for-those-like-you In A Broken World’s EP “For Those Like You” is available for download and if you wish to purchase it, you can name your price for how much you’re willing to spend. In the words of CJ “you could buy the album for sixty-nine cents.” – What a deal!

In A Broken World’s next show will be happening on February 15th, so make sure you go on their Facebook page and wish them luck! What did you think of “For Those Like You”? What is some constructive criticism you have for the band? We’d love to hear from you, so leave us a comment and let’s chat! Holla atcha girl. -Sarah
