Monday Update: Liebster Award Edition

Hiii everyone and happy Monday! I hope you all had a great weekend! When I returned home from my boyfriend’s house yesterday afternoon I was so excited to see that I was nominated for the Liebster Award by my friend at A Maple Girl! It was such a pleasant surprise so I decided to make a Monday Update out of it! Here are my answers to all of the fun questions provided by A Maple Girl:

  1. Long nails or short? Long – although I’m currently wearing my nails natural and short at the moment. I had extremely long acrylics reminiscent of talons for over half a year but now I’m giving my real nails some recovery time before I get a new set on.
  2. Red lips or pink? Red!! Haha I would be nothing without my red lips and red hair!
  3. Favorite YouTube beauty Guru? I don’t really have one…I’m not a big YouTube watcher and I’m honestly so set in my every day makeup routine that I rarely switch it up.
  4. Favorite season of the year? AUTUMN!!!! I love the fall so much! Fall clothing is my favorite: cardigans, peacoats, fingerless gloves, hats, and cable knit sweaters – I love it all! I really want to get to a haunted house with my boyfriend soon! We actually might be going to Halloweekends at Cedar Point this upcoming weekend. 🙂
  5. First job? I worked as an actor at a haunted house, Carnival Of Horrors. I was fourteen or so and it was so much fun. I also got to do all of my own makeup which was a blast.
  6. If you could only use one makeup brand for the rest of your life, which would it be? The Body Shop, hands down. However, I would have to cheat and use NYX for my lipstick because their matte lippies are the best!!
  7. Dream vacation destination? This is an easy one – traveling through Europe!!
  8. Favorite book you’ve read recently? I just finished rereading one of my favorite books, Night Film, this past Friday. It’s so fantastic and is in production to be made into a film soon! I liked this book so much that I got one of the quotes, “Do I dare?”, tattooed on my inner left arm.
  9. Why did you start a blog? Lifewithlilred originally started strictly as a fashion blog because I had multiple people tell me daily that I should start one. I have a very unique personal style and I was flattered that people recognized that and liked it, so I figured “why not?” Now lifewithlilred is more of a lifestyle blog, covering everything from beauty and literature to silly ramblings and mental health.
  10. Celebrity crush? I have tons! Haha I love Johnny Depp, Jack White, Julian Casablancas, Britney Spears, and Gwen Stefani just to name a few! For more on my celebrity crushes you can tune in to lifewithlilred every Monday and Wednesday for my Man Crush Monday and Woman Crush Wednesday segments!

I nominate:

Here’s how the award works:

  1. Thank the person who nominated you.
  2. Provide a link back to their page.
  3. Copy and Paste the award to your blog
  4. Answer the questions set by the person who nominated you.
  5. Nominate 5 blogs with less than 500 followers
  6. Leave a comment on their blog to inform them of their nomination.

My questions for you are:

  1. What’s the one beauty item you couldn’t live without?
  2. Who are three of your favorite bands?
  3. The best gift you’ve ever received?
  4. The weirdest food you’ve ever ate?
  5. Favorite childhood movie?
  6. Your favorite pair of shoes?
  7. A story of the worst date you’ve ever been on?
  8. Favorite book?
  9. Do you have any pets?
  10. What is your favorite subject to blog about?

Once again, I’m so thrilled that I was nominated for the Liebster Award and had such a blast making this post. To those of you who want more of me, you can friend me on Facebook at Sarah Mushenheim, follow my page, or email me at sarah.mush6794@gmail.com! How was everyone’s weekend? What is the weather like in your neck of the woods? I wanna hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Monday Update: Lazy Weekend Edition

Monday Update: Lazy Weekend Edition

Helloooo everyone and Happy Monday!! Thanks to a fantastically lazy weekend, I’m feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to go! My week days are always so crazy now so this weekend I finally got to do exactly what I wanted…nothing! There were lots of things that made my weekend great, like not having to drive, catching up on leisure reading, and lots and lots of sleep! Take a listen to the Bruno Mars theme song to my weekend and then let’s discuss:

During the week I’m constantly on the run in the Little Red Love Machine, driving siblings, driving to school, driving to boyfriend, meeting clients, and running errands. So needless to say, one of the best parts of this weekend was that I didn’t have to get behind the wheel of my car one time! It. Was. AWESOME!! My parents handled all of the driving this weekend and I handled the laying in my bed doing nothing this weekend. 😉

But seriously, you never really realize how nice it is to have someone else drive you until your tucked away in the backseat of one of your parent’s cars. For example, we went to see the new Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro movie, The Intern, and the movie theater was less than five minutes away but even the smallest amount of chauffeuring was great! The movie was so cute and funny, too – I just love Anne Hathaway and her and De Niro made a great pair. The Intern was kind of like a more lighthearted version of The Devil Wears Prada and I really enjoyed it.

My favorite part of the weekend, however, was finally catching up on my pleasure reading! During the past few weeks I’ve been so exhausted before bed that I could barely finish two or three chapters in my book, Night Film, before falling asleep. Usually I’m a ridiculously fast reader – I can finish a five hundred page book in three days flat easily, so the whole “reading barely one hundred pages in one week” thing killed me!

Lucky for me, this weekend I had no school work to worry about so I was a free woman! I got to spend my afternoons snuggled under my blankets for hours on end and was able to complete over one hundred pages each sitting, which is definitely more like it! Reading is one of my favorite past times so the fact that I got to have entire afternoons dedicated to relaxing and flipping through the pages of a book that I love so much made my lazy days perfect. (If you haven’t read Night Film, give it a try! It’s wonderful…so wonderful that one of my tattoos is a quote from the book!)

Last but not least, I got to sleep, sleep, sleep this weekend! If there’s one thing that I love, it’s not having to set an alarm in the morning. These past two days, I got to sleep in to my hearts desire without the incessant buzzing of my phone and iPod to wake me up. On Saturday I slept until 11:15 and it was absolutely amazing! I woke up around seven and nine that morning and it was so nice to be able to look at the time and realize that I could continue sleeping for as much as I wanted. By the time I woke up on Saturday, I decided that it was too late to bother with makeup so I’ve spent both of my weekend days au natural! I definitely could get used to this homebody thing!

nothing

So there you have it, this week’s Monday Update: Lazy Weekend Edition! Now that I’m well rested, I’m ready to take on another crazy week! How was everyone’s weekend? Was it lazy like mine or jam packed with cool stuff? I wanna hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Man Crush Monday: Sandman Edition

Man Crush Monday: Sandman Edition

Helloooo everyone and welcome to another edition of Man Crush Monday – Sandman style! This weeks #MCM is a bit different because my man crush isn’t an actual human being but I still love him/lust after him just the same! Enjoy this ironic choice of music and then let’s get to it!

Dear Sandman,

First things first, even though you’re a graphic novel character, I am so weirdly and madly in love with you. Second of all, I’d rather call you by one of your other names, so Morpheus it is! This past year I’ve been on the biggest Neil Gaiman kick ever, so it was only a matter of time before I discovered the Sandman series. Within mere pages of the very first issue, I was totally obsessed. After one single month, I had completed the entire series from beginning to end and all I wanted was more, so I started to read them again! I think what I like so much about these graphic novels is the whole idea that bad people get punished and the good ones get rewarded in some way shape or form. That’s what attracted me so much to Morpheus initially, because he could empathize with the victims and he felt the need to protect them from any further damage. There’s something about reading the chronicles of his world in The Dreaming that makes me feel safe and that’s so important to me. Yes, beautiful Morpheus did have some not so great moments with past lovers, family, and friends but deep down in my heart I still feel like he always means well. Not only is Morpheus a somewhat benevolent lord but he’s also my emo kid fantasy come true. I mean seriously, he’s so gorgeous I can’t even. Hubba hubba. I’ve heard rumors of a possible Sandman film and frankly, I hope that it doesn’t happen. All I need are the words and pictures on paper to take me to a different world and no matter how amazing the film is, it just won’t be the same. Thank you to Morpheus for making me feel understood, thank you for making me feel like I’m not so alone, and thank you for always providing me with sweet dreams. I LOVE YOU!!!!

^^^ I really want to get the first image tattooed! That’s definitely going to happen sometime in the near future!

So there you have it, this weeks Man Crush Monday: Sandman Edition! Who is your #MCM this week? What is one of your favorite stories from the Sandman series? I wanna hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Some Food For Thought

Some Food For Thought

Hey there everyone and happy Thursday. So I’ve recently been on the biggest Neil Gaiman kick ever and have been completely devouring his graphic novel series Sandman. I just finished volume five entitled A Game Of You, in which one of the main characters is a young man named Alvin transitioning into the gorgeous and sassy Wanda. Wanna know the best part about this story….it was published in 1993. While reading this twenty-two year old graphic novel this afternoon I couldn’t help but be amazed that I was reading such a relevant tale especially now in the light of the metamorphosis of Caitlyn Jenner. It made me so incredibly happy to be reading Wanda’s story and I couldn’t help but smile over the similarities between a fictional red headed transitioning male and the newly transitioned Jenner. It touched my soul to know that there are people in this world – such as Neil Gaiman and the Sandman creators who are accepting and loving of everything and everyone. But it also completely broke my heart that there are still people in the world who are degrading and insulting to such a beautiful and vulnerable group that is the LBGT community. It saddened me that some of the people in Wanda’s made up world still called her Alvin and referred to her as a “him”. It made my heart hurt for Caitlyn Jenner and any person being ridiculed and shunned just for being who they are. As I hungrily read through Wanda’s story this afternoon she became more and more real to me. She felt like me. She felt like a friend. And she could very well feel a lot like you. Unfortunately in A Game Of You, Miss Wanda had an untimely death but there were some really powerful scenes that took place at her funeral. There was one particular image that really stuck out to me in the graphic novel that I felt a strong desire to share with you guys. Take a look:

IMG_3727[1]

^^^ Isn’t that amazing? This picture literally sent chills down my spine and filled my eyes with tears. So the point of this post? Wanda is real. Caitlyn Jenner is real. The struggle that people have with gender identity, their sexuality, an addiction, ect is real. The point of this post? I guess it’s me telling you guys to open your eyes and open your hearts just a little bit more to these struggles if you have your hesitations. Neil Gaiman created Wanda in 1993 and it’s now 2015. In A Game Of You there were those who loved and accepted Wanda and those who were adamant in voicing their disgust about her. Sadly, twenty-two years later there are still those who are close minded enough to call our Wanda’s, our Caitlyn’s, and our dear friends in the LBGT community names that I can’t even bring myself to type. There are those who still spit their poison and hope that their venom will begin to wither away the gorgeous spirits of such an amazing group of individuals. But luckily, there are those (like myself) who will offer their support and a kind word every step of the way to those who need it. This is a Lil Red PSA letting anyone who is struggling with anything at all know that I love you, I’m here for you, and your triumphs and success means the world to me. The end.

I hope all of you guys are having a wonderful day so far! Mine is alright, thanks for asking! 😉 I’m actually pretty excited because tonight I get the princess treatment at the nail salon for my birthday! BTW – I’ll be out of office tomorrow because I’ll be going to the Toledo Zoo with my best friend Lea for my birthday day trip! I’m so excited! But as always, you know how to reach me via the comment section or my email! And please know, that I will not tolerate any negativity on this post and your comments will be deleted point blank period. Questions? Concerns? I wanna hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Lil Red Pro Tips: Weekend Fun Edition

Standard
Lil Red Pro Tips: Weekend Fun Edition

Hello there everyone! I hope all of you had a fabulous weekend…I know I did! My weekend was full of friends, family, fun, and food AKA #FFFF – it also included some really great movies and books as well! In this post I’ll be discussing with you some Lil Red Pro Tips on how to make the most out of your weekend!

DO: Watch a funny movie: My family absolutely loves the Horrible Bosses movies, and this Friday we watched Horrible Bosses 2. There’s seriously no better way to start off the weekend then with a silly movie that you don’t have to think about. The HB movies are hands down one of my favorite comedy franchises thanks to their all star cast of Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day, Jennifer Aniston, and Kevin Spacey. Sure, they’re not the best movies in the world. And yes, they’re vulgar as all get out – but hey, they bring me to a happy place of gut busting laughter which is exactly what you want from a comedy!

DO: Cook something delicious: Lil Red was tearing it up in the kitchen this weekend! I would have taken pictures of the food, but honestly it looked kind of gross…but it tasted really good! Ha! On Friday I made a Mexican casserole that turned out really well. It had sauteed onions and garlic, kidney beans, diced tomatoes, diced chiles, sour cream, and shredded pepper jack cheese in it. It was perfect for dipping with chips or wrapping it up burrito style in a tortilla. I’ll admit that even after this home cooked Mexican dish I still wanted Taco Bell…but you can’t always get what you want. #neversatisfied I also made a lava cake like dessert this afternoon that I’m really looking forward to trying! It’s actually baking in the oven as we speak and it smells delicious, so fingers crossed!

DO: Read a good book: I finally finished the best seller The Girl On The Train this weekend and absolutely loved it! I’ve heard a lot of hype about this book and I’ve been reading it throughout the week, so I was so excited to finally finish it yesterday! The Girl On The Train intertwines the stories of the alcoholic and unstable Rachel, the mistress Anna, and Megan – the girl with a dark past. Rachel rides the train into London every morning like clockwork, gazing out the window and throwing back gin and tonics like it’s her job. Almost every morning as the train rolls by a suburban neighborhood, she watches a young couple whom she names “Jess and Jason” sitting on their patio and enjoying their morning. They seem to be the perfect couple, until one morning Rachel sees something that changes this perspective entirely. The Girl On The Train is a bone chilling thriller that will leave you guessing until the very end. This book was so so good and I can’t recommend it enough!

DO: Watch a serious movie: So tonight my family and I are going to watch The Theory of Everything and I could not be more excited. I’ve been looking forward to seeing this movie since I saw previews for it in the theater ages ago. The previews alone brought tears to my eyes, and the Oscar buzz that it received only verified the confidence that I have that this movie will be amazing. You might be asking “why recommend it if you haven’t seen it?” But like I said, I am SO confident that I’ll enjoy it that I’m just laying all my cards on the table now. If anything, let this suggestion be me telling you that my favorite way to end the weekend is by watching an excellent film on Sunday night. Fridays are my comedy night, Saturdays are my going out night, and Sundays are my serious film nights. A perfect lineup, if I do say so myself. 😉

DO: Go bowling. (DON’T: Go bowling with fake nails on): Last night I had a lovely evening going bowling with my sweet neighbor, Vaughn. We went to the lunar bowling night at a close by bowling alley and had a blast. The only thing that would have made my night better is if I didn’t have my damn talon acrylic nails on! I had to use the ol’ “underhand roll” technique, because there’s no way in hell I would put my fingers with my sharp claw nails in the bowling ball holes. Honestly, even if I could bowl properly I don’t think that I would have done any better! We played four games and I got one measly strike the entire time – but I’m very proud of that strike, thank you very much! Despite this minor problem, it was still so much fun! 🙂

This weekend was one of the best ones I’ve had in ages thanks to some beautiful family time, wonderful friend time, and super good food time! I hope all of you had just as great of a weekend as I did! What was your favorite Oscar nominated film? How did you feel about The Girl On The Train? I want to hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah

Lil Red Recommends – Entertainment Edition

Lil Red Recommends – Entertainment Edition

Hey there and happy March!!! Spring is on the horizon and I don’t know about you, but I’m so ready for it! Especially considering it’s going to snow all day in good ol’ Akron, Ohio. -____- As of late I’ve been enjoying some great movies, literature, and music that I’d love to share with you. There’s also one heinous excuse for a film that I must warn you about, so let’s get started!!

Watch St. Vincent: I watched this fantastically sweet movie last night with my parents and I loved every minute of it. St. Vincent was a classic “grumpy old man with a sensitive side underneath it all” film starring Bill Murray who was quite phenomenal. (He was nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars for his performance.) The sensitive side to Vincent is brought out by a number of people and situations throughout the film including his new neighbors Maggie (Melissa McCarthy) and her young son Oliver (Jaeden Lieberher), the lady of the night Daka (Naomi Watts), and his Alzheimer ridden wife Sandy (Donna Mitchell). The all star cast all give inspiring performances. I was pleasantly surprised that Melissa McCarthy was able to pull off a serious roll and young Jaeden Lieberher was sweet as can be. Usually I’m not fond of child actors, but he was just adorable and not annoying in the slightest. And can we please just talk about Naomi Watts as Daka?! Between her prostitute-y hair and makeup and her thick Russian accent, I didn’t even realize it was her until my mom told me! She nailed it. In the classic storyline with a twist, St. Vincent truly showed that you can’t judge a book by its cover. The film was the perfect combination of serious and pure fun and I can’t recommend it enough.

DO NOT WATCH Before I Go To Sleep: I’m sure you guys will recall that I absolutely loved the book Before I Go To Sleep from previous posts. I still hold true to my statement that this book was infinitely better than the popular Gone Girl. I was extremely excited to hear that one of my favorites was made into a movie starring the lovely Nicole Kidman and the hotty mchothot Colin Firth. I’ve been looking forward to watching this film for a while now and was so happy when my mom brought it home from the library yesterday. Eager to see my favorite book on the big screen (more like eighteen inch TV screen, but same difference) I popped the movie into the DVD player and was ready to be taken away into the creepy confusing world described in the book. To bring you up to speed if you’re not familiar with the storyline, Before I Go To Sleep tells the tale of Christine, a woman who experienced horrible trauma causing her memory to erase every night when she falls asleep. The movie started out okay for about ten minutes, and then everything went downhill. The movie was absolutely NOTHING like the book. Important facts were altered or removed completely and the acting of Kidman and Firth was sub par at best. Quite frankly, I’ve seen Lifetime movies that were better than this. If you read the book and enjoyed it as much as I did, don’t bother watching the movie because I give you the Lil Red Guarantee that you will absolutely hate it. If you have never read the book and are thinking about watching it, DON’T DO IT! It sucked and you’re welcome for saving you an hour and a half of your life. 🙂

^^SHAMEFUL!

Read Dad Is Fat: Lol, if you’re familiar with the extremely pale comedian Jim Gaffigan, you’ll know that this is his memoir to all things parenting. Gaffigan has a herd of five small equally as pale offspring and Dad Is Fat includes stories, tips, observations, and just pure silliness about his adventures as a parent. Usually I’m not one for reading books penned by celebrities and I’m also not fond of reading comedic books but when my brother was home a few weeks ago he brought Dad Is Fat with him (which I actually bought for him) in case I wanted to read it. He told me it was hilarious so I accepted the book to maybe read at a later time. That time came sooner than I thought, after I finished the last book I was reading The Rosie Effect in a whopping three days. (The Rosie Effect was the sequel to The Rosie Project and it was simply delightful! Definitely give the series a try, you’ll be glad you did!) Anyways, I was completely out of things to read so I begrudgingly picked up Dad Is Fat and was instantly in stitches. If you’re looking for something lighthearted and lots of fun, give this goofy memoir a try. You’ll be in laughing hysterics the whole time!

Give The Rosie Series A Try: As I mentioned above, I recently finished the much anticipated sequel to The Rosie Project, The Rosie Effect. The Rosie books tell the story of calculated, scientific, and socially awkward Don and his quest to find true love. The books never go right out and say that Don is on the autism spectrum, but you can easily deduce through the context clues that he indeed is on the spectrum. Don’s life is turned upside down in the first book when he finds himself falling in love with the outgoing and outspoken Rosie, who is literally his polar opposite. In the sequel which I really enjoyed, we find our cute couple enjoying married life until a major shock happens…Rosie is pregnant! The Rosie Effect follows the hilarious and at times heartbreaking moments in Don’s every day life. New friendships are made with eccentric characters even in the midst of a marital rough patch. Blame it on the hormones, I guess?! Can Don and Rosie salvage their relationship in time for their new baby? I guess you’re gonna have to find out!

Listen To Tom Vek: I know that I’ve mentioned Tom Vek before, but he’s slowly but surely becoming one of my favorite artists, so I figured I’d mention him again. I’m so obsessed with his album Leisure Seizure, I seriously can’t even. Vek has this amazing ability to make his voice drone on and on but still sound completely amazing. His music is moody, melancholy, and I can’t get enough. His monotonous voice is the definition of complete angst and all of his songs sound so mechanical and cool. It’s rare for me to hear an album and enjoy every song, but Leisure Seizure defies those odds, delivering hits track after track. I would put videos for the entire album on here, but I’ll leave it up to you guys to find more of his music if you like him. Here’s a few tracks that I really enjoy to get you started:

So there you have it, my Lil Red Recommends – Entertainment Edition! Have you guys read any of the books or watched any of the films I mentioned? What did you think of them? I’d love to hear from you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Happy Sunday! -Sarah

Lil Red Recommends: Procrastination Edition!

Heyyyyyy guys! So I was in the middle of doing math homework, and I was getting SO (Lil) Red with frustration, so I said “fuck it” and decided to blog instead. Math homework can wait….until the day before it’s due 😉 Ha, anyways I’ve had a few fun occurrences happen this week that I would love to inform you lovelies about, so let’s get to it with my Lil Red Recommends: Procrastination Edition!

Read “The Husband’s Secret”: Lol, told you guys I was gonna recommend this one as soon as I finished reading it! It was SO good! I recently read “Big Little Lies” by Liane Moriarty and was obsessed, so I was very excited to start reading one of her best sellers “The Husband’s Secret”. This book did not disappoint, as I expected from the phenomenal Australian author. All of Moriarty’s books weave together three women’s lives, usually through the school that the ladies children attend, which was a common theme between both books. In “The Husband’s Secret” we meet super mom Celeste, introverted Tess, and elderly and depressed Rachel. Rachel has every reason for her sorrow, because her teenage daughter, Janie was murdered years ago and the case was never solved. I can’t say much about the book, because giving one thing away would give away a lot – but I can tell you that there’s a murderer living among the quiet Australian suburb who never fully paid for the crimes committed all those years ago. Saying that “The Husband’s Secret” is a page turner is an absolute understatement. Much like “Big Little Lies”, I devoured this book in days and fell in love with all of the charming characters that “The Husband’s Secret” has to offer. Do yourselves a favor and READ THIS BOOK! I promise that you’ll like it – you have the Lil Red guarantee!

Go See American Sniper: Alright, so I understand that there’s a lot of controversy surrounding this film regarding how much of the actual story of Chris Kyle was true and whatnot. And here’s the thing – I don’t care. I didn’t look too much into all of the news stories and web articles about the subject – if I did that, I don’t think that I would have enjoyed the film as much as I did. American Sniper was directed and produced by Clint Eastwood, so by default I loved this movie. Anything that Eastwood touches is gold in my opinion, and it brought me great joy to watch a movie that had his unique touch all over it. The entire time I was in the movie theater I couldn’t help but think that the film was such “classic Eastwood”. The controversies regarding the film doesn’t take away from the marvelous direction, cinematography, sound mixing, and acting that American Sniper has to offer. Bradley Cooper gave one hell of a performance – I was so impressed! Usually I don’t care too much for him as an actor, but I truly appreciated this character and the work that went into becoming him. Of course there were a lot of parts in American Sniper that were hard to watch, but if you can look past that, you’re in for a great night at the movies.

Listen To Jagwar Ma: Ohhhh yes. Hell yes. I LOVE these guys! Jagwar Ma has one of the most unique sounds in an indie band that I’ve heard in a very long time. The thing about these guys, is that they’re so much more than just indie. They’re alternative, electronica, surfer rock, with the slightest hint of boy band swag that I just adore. Their 2013 album “Howlin” delivers non stop hits – seriously there’s not one song on there that I dislike. One thing that I’m particularly fond of on “Howlin” is that even their short songs like “Man I Need” and “Let Her Go” pack just as much of a punch as their over five minutes “Come Save Me” and “Four”. I’m sure you all know by now how much I appreciate that, because I feel like I mention it a lot. I always say that you can tell that a band is dedicated to their music when their filler songs are just as good as their main feature songs. Do yourselves a favor and give Jagwar Ma I try, I’m pretty confident that some of you fabulous people will enjoy them!

Alright guys, that’s enough procrastination for the day – mama needs to get back to her homework. -___- I hope all of you have a great rest of your day! What movies have you seen lately? What band are you obsessed with at the moment? I’d love to hear from you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Love, love love – Sarah

Lil Red Recommends: January Edition!

Lil Red Recommends: January Edition!

Whatsup guys! Happy Sunday to each and every one of you! I’ve read quite a few good books this month, discovered a cool new band, and had a somewhat religious experience while shopping, so I wanted to share all of these and more with you in the newest Lil Red Recommends! Let’s get to it:

Read Tuesdays With Morrie: Seriously. Like Nike…just do it. My dear friend Kate got this for me a few Christmas-es ago and I decided to pick it up when I was out of a book to read after I finished Big Little Lies (which will be discussed later!) I read this book quite some time ago, and I am SO happy that I finally reread it. This book touched my heart and soul in ways that I can’t even describe the second time around. I guess that has to do with the fact that my beloved grandma was still alive and well the first time I read this book. This is a true story that chronicles the final visits a professor suffering with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) has with a former student. Mitch, who hasn’t spoke with his favorite college professor Morrie Schwartz in sixteen years becomes aware of his professor’s disease by seeing him doing a television interview while flipping stations. He hops a plane to Boston to see Morrie looking fragile and pallid in a wheelchair. After their first visit together which fell on a Tuesday, Morrie asked if Mitch would come to see him again next week, to which Mitch obliged. All of their meetings in their college days fell on a Tuesday and these visits stayed true to that tradition because they’re “Tuesday people” according to Morrie. During the visits between professor and student topics like religion, emotions, forgiveness, and death are discussed. We learn about Morrie and Mitch’s past and current struggles, that are peppered with humor and the questions that everyone probably asks themselves. This tribute to an amazing man had the ability to make me love both Morrie and Mitch as if they were my own family, and I cannot recommend this book enough. If you’re looking for a quick read that makes you think and opens your heart, grab yourself a copy of Tuesdays With Morrie pronto. If this book doesn’t move you in some way, then you literally have no soul.

Read Big Little Lies: Ohh yes, this book is FABULOUS. Big Little Lies tells the tale of the drama of three women: battered and beautiful Celeste, fashionable and confrontational Madeline, and of course shy and young Jane. These ladies meet through the kindergarten that their children attend and through fast friendship their lives become intertwined. All of the struggles these women face lead up to a tragic night at a school trivia night function for the parents. The chapters literally begin with counting down the amount of time left until the trivia night. This book covers everything from domestic violence, fabulous fashion, sexual assault, bullying, and relationships and it is an absolute thrill of a read. I can’t tell you too much about the book because it’s going to ruin a lot of the shocks and surprises that happen in basically each chapter. I’m a big fan of the author Herman Koch and Big Little Lies is written very similarly to his work, so I instantly fell in love with it. I know this description of the book was vague, but seriously PLEASE read it and tell me what you think! I’m already obsessed with the author Liane Moriarty and just started one of her best sellers The Husband’s Secret last night. I’m very confident that it will be on my next Lil Red Recommends segment!

big little lies

Listen to Sam Roberts Band: I know, I know – typical PacSun music. SUE ME FOR IT because I love these guys! So catchy, so fresh, so upbeat. I just put their debut album Lo-Fantasy on my iTunes two days ago and I’m kind of obsessed. It comes with two disks, the actual CD and then remix versions of some of the songs. Upbeat is honestly one of the best words I can use to describe these guys, because that’s what they are – they’re fun and the beats of their songs are absolutely infectious. I dare you to not listen to Sam Roberts Band without bobbing your head or tapping your feet. Or in my case – dancing very poorly. I heard their songs “Metal Skin”and “Shapeshifters” when I used to work at PacSun, and they remain two of my favorite songs off of Lo-Fantasy. Do yourselves a favor and give them a try, you’ll be glad you did.

Shop The Pre-Spring Sales: So I was at the mall earlier this week with my sister and all of the stores were still flaunting their post holiday/pre-spring sales. We went to the two stores that we wanted to find the best deals at, which were Victoria’s Secret and Express. Kristen managed to get a sixty dollar bra from VS for only twenty dollars! You seriously can’t beat that. There were a few bras that I had my eye on in their sale bins, but I have more than enough bras to wear a different one every day of the week so I controlled myself from purchasing one, as hard as it was!!! #selfcontrol The real steal of the day came from my find at Express. This entire winter season I had my eye on a gorgeous snake skin print embellished V-neck sweater but the seventy-nine dollar price tag was just too steep for me to justify buying it. While rummaging through the sale bins in Express, a miracle happened. I FOUND THE SWEATER!!! My hands got sweaty (which always happens when I get excited – it’s my cross to bear.) and I rushed to the fitting room. I stripped off my winter layers of a jacket, hoodie, and sweater as quickly as I could and slipped into the sweater I had been lusting over for so long. It. Was. Perfect. It was exactly how I hoped it would fit and look on me, and I couldn’t wait to wear it out that evening. The best part about it? I got it for NINETEEN DOLLARS! Saying that I felt like I was on Ecstasy is an understatement!!! There she is:

Do a Winter Activity: Whether it be sledding, skiing, snow shoeing, or making some winter food like soups or peppermint treats with a friend – DO IT! I figure skated for close to ten years when I was younger, and a few nights ago my sister and I went ice skating. We had an absolute blast – well maybe me more than her because I actually knew what I was doing! That night was my first time back on the ice in close to four years and I was amazed at how much I could still do. As soon as I hit the ice I could feel my muscle memory kicking it – it was just like riding a bike. I was still able to jump, spin, and do a lot of fun footwork tricks. At one point during the night my sister said “Sarah, people are watching you” and I’d be a liar if I didn’t admit how good it made me feel. It took me back to when I would compete and all eyes would be on me when I performed my routines. Being the center of attention for just a few hours at the rink lifted my spirits and my ass, because it was a great work out! If you’re ever in the Akron, Ohio area and wanna go skating – you know how to find me!

So there you have it! My Lil Red Recommends for the month of January! What’s your favorite winter activity? Have you read Big Little Lies or Tuesdays With Morrie? What did you think of it? What was a great winter sale steal that you got? I’d love to hear from you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Have a fabulous day! -Sarah

Lil Red’s New Obsessions

Lil Red’s New Obsessions

Hello one and all and happy Saturday! These past few weeks I’ve gained a lot of great stuff from Christmas gifts and the extra moolah I acquired to hit the post holiday sales. I wanted to share all of this fun stuff with you guys, especially because all of the items I’ll be mentioning below should still be available to purchase in stores and online if you like them!

Gypsy Warrior Flannels: I absolutely adore these flannels! After I quit working at PacSun, Gypsy Warrior was the one brand that I particularly missed getting clothes from. I already had one of their flannels like these new ones except in a different color, so when I saw that the brand launched some new ones, I immediately added it to my Christmas wish list. I was so happy when I opened this gift from my mom! If you’re interested in buying these flannels, just know that the sizes run more like a mans shirt. I’m 5’1 and 1/4 (because the quarter counts, damnit!) and 113 pounds, and I wear a size small – if that helps you figure out what size you need at all! These should still be available on http://www.pacsun.com and in stores. If you sign up for their email program, you get a 15% off coupon emailed to you!

Betsey Johnson Snake Cuff: This little beauty was another stellar gift from my beloved mama. I was absolutely blown away when I opened this gift, because I had forgotten that I even wanted it! A few weeks prior to Christmas, my sister, mother, and myself took a trip to the mall. In Macy’s they had a Betsey Johnson display up, and I absolutely adore her clothing and jewelry so I had to stop and take a look. Naturally, I liked everything, but this snake cuff really caught my eye because I absolutely LOVE snake jewelry. I pointed this one out to my mom and told her how much I liked it, and then we walked away and it was never discussed again. I was so so happy to add this piece to my collection, I was even happier to hear that my mom got this bracelet at TJMaxx for a much better price than at Macy’s. This bracelet should still be available at TJ’s if you’re lucky, at Macy’s, or on Betsey Johnson’s website http://www.betseyjohnson.com!

Express Sweater & Shoes: Express has slowly but surely become one of my favorite stores to shop at. I never really cared to shop there until a few months ago, when I went in with my sister who needed new black clothing for her job at The Body Shop. I was blown away by how chic and sharp all of their clothing was. I saw my cowl neck sweater that night with my sister, and had my eye on it ever since. A few weeks ago when Kristen and I went shopping, Express was having a half off sale and I knew that the sweater had to be mine! It has become an instant favorite, and I wear it way more often than I care to admit. My snake skin patterned shoes were a Christmas gift from my sister. She originally got me the same shoes in a floral print pattern which I didn’t care for, so I exchanged it out for these bad boys. I absolutely love black snake skin print, and I was so happy when I saw these! They match perfectly with my black snake skin super skinny jeans that I got from Express a few months ago. Who could ask for anything more?! Love it. Both of these items should still be available on http://www.express.com or in stores!

Target Winter Coat: Yesterday when my mom and I were running errands at Target, I found this lovely jacket marked fifty percent off. I was so thrilled when I found it, because it was a great deal, and I don’t have a really warm winter coat to brave the Ohio cold. I love the black and dark blue color blocking going on and I find the shape of this coat so charming! Best of all, it keeps me warm and toasty when I’m out and about. This jacket came with a detachable black faux fur collar, which I clearly have taken off already! However, I put good use to the collar by attaching it to my flannel collars for a fun unexpected twist. This coat should still be available in stores and online for half off at http://www.target.com! This jacket also came in all black without the dark blue color blocking.

BustedTees Shirts: My beloved big bro Peter got me a thirty dollar Groupon to http://www.bustedtees.com and I couldn’t be more delighted by the shirts that I ordered from this hilarious website. All of the t-shirts on BustedTees are simply fantastic. A lot of them are inside jokes from movies, television, or video games. For example, my Speaker City shirt was the company that Beanie founded in the movie Old School, which is one of my favorites! “I built Speaker City from the ground up and I can’t even read. Truth.” The website is filled with shirts dripping with sarcasm and pure wit. Peter and I thought that the Daft Punk shirt pictured below was an absolute riot and I thought that the Reunite Pangaea shirt was great. There is sure to be something for everyone on http://www.bustedtees.com! The shirts fit fantastically and your purchases arrive promptly as well. One of the best things about this website was it’s ingenious size chart. It showed the shirts in a size small, medium, and large, on different girls with different body types. A size small looked like it fit well on a girl shaped similarly to me, so that’s what I got and it fits like a glove! So brilliant!

Peter Pan Book: My beloved best friend Kate got this for me for Christmas in honor of our beautiful evening of decorating ornaments, drinking wine, and watching Peter Pan Live. I was so touched by how thoughtful this gift was and simply stunned by its beauty. The illustrations in this book are just magical and the pages are lined with silver to match the shimmering cover. Kate informed me that she purchased this book at Barnes & Noble, and apparently a lot of beloved fairy tales have been made to look like this one. I definitely would like to add more of these books to my collection. They’re so fun to read and just as enjoyable to admire! When Kate got this book, it was buy one get one half off, I’m unsure of if that promotion is still running, but the book should be available in store and online at http://www.barnesandnoble.com!

New Book Recommendations!!!!

Hello hello! I hope all of you lovely people had a fantastic holiday! I definitely did, and am extremely grateful for it. I had a really great day today as well. I went out for lunch with my brother and mommy at Fisher’s which is a quaint little cafe that my sister waitresses at. I then got to have some nice hang out time with my big bro before he boarded a plane to Atlanta, Georgia to be with his fiance’s family for some post Christmas celebrations. I got a gorgeous stiletto nail manicure this afternoon AND my mom dyed my hair to my signature flaming red. After all of this pampering and primping, I was finally able to curl up in bed and finish the book that I’ve been working on this past week, The Storied Life of A.J Fikry.

This book was absolutely adorable. It was lighthearted and fun, which is exactly what I needed after reading the addictively disturbing novel The Life We Bury, which I will discuss later! My mom recommended this book to me and we always enjoy reading books at the same time so we can discuss it together. This quirky quick read tells the story of a cantankerous book store owner A.J. Fikry. He is recently widowed as his wife was killed in a car accident and he lives alone above his store Island Books. Everything is relatively normal in A.J.’s world, but that all changes the day he leaves the door to the book store unlocked while he goes out for his morning run. Upon his return he discovers two shockers:

  • His extremely rare copy of Edgar Allen Poe’s “Tamerlane” has been stolen from his apartment. Only fifty copies of this book exist in the entire world.
  • There’s a two year old girl on the floor of the children’s book section, with an Elmo doll and a note from her mother explaining why she can’t care for baby Maya anymore. The little girl was dropped off in the store because her mother wanted her to grow up in a place surrounded by books and people who appreciate them.

The story follows the riveting search for Tamerlane and the hilarious trials of A.J. learning how to become a single parent while also learning how to fall in love after his late wife’s death. Weirdly charming characters are peppered throughout the book who you grow to love just as much as A.J. and his brainy adopted daughter. What makes this book extra special is that before each chapter there’s a journal entry that A.J. makes to Maya that discusses a book he recommends to her and the reasons why it reminds him of her. It’s such a sweet testament of the love a dad has for his little girl. If you’re looking for a feel good book with some cheeky humor and a few shocking twists and turns, then The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry is the book for you!

Prior to reading A.J. Fikry, I plowed through The Life We Bury and it was absolutely STELLAR.

This was author Allen Esken’s debut novel and let me tell you, he started off with a ginormous BANG. This book follows the story of Joe Talbert and his hell of a life. Joe hasn’t lived the most charmed life in the world, he doesn’t know his father, his mother is a raging alcoholic with a tendency towards abusive behavior, and his kid brother Jeremy is autistic. On top of all of the drama going on in his family, he has to write a biography of someone for his college writing class. College is already a struggle enough, considering he works late as a bouncer at a bar and is often caring for his brother who suffers blows at the hands of his mother and her piece of shit boyfriend. Because Joe doesn’t know his father, he can’t interview his grandparents on his side for the biography, and his grandparents on his mother’s side are dead. Running out of options and with a deadline creeping up, Joe ventures to an assisted living home in the hopes that he can interview one of the residents. Once Joe arrives, he learns that the residents there all suffer from either Alzheimer’s or dementia, except for one…Carl Irving. Irving who has been in prison for the past thirty years for the murder and rape of a fourteen year old girl has been granted permission to stay the rest of his life in the assisted living home because he has stage four pancreatic cancer. The rest of his life is estimated to be about four months. Joe gets permission to interview Irving, and quickly learns that things are not as they may seem about this sickly man. Through digging into Irving’s past as a soldier in the Vietnam War and the trial for the murder and rape of a young girl the question arises of if Irving really did commit this horrific crime…and if he didn’t, then who did? This book is an absolutely AMAZING murder mystery that left my heart pounding like a drum. Try as I may, I could NOT put this book down for the life of me and ended up finishing it in two days flat. If you’re looking for an intense thriller that might not necessarily be for the faint of heart, then The Life We Bury is just the book for you!

So there you have it, some recommendations from yours truly! So now, what I need from you guys is a favor. I need a new book to read, and I am up for any and all suggestions. I just finished The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry this evening, so I’m in the mood for something dark. I don’t shy away from any genres and I love getting hooked on a new author, so if you have any ideas on a book for Lil Red to enjoy, pleeease leave me a comment and let’s chat! Goodnight! -Sarah
