Hi everyone and TGIF! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked how I keep my fake red hair so vibrant. I get the question at least twice or more per week and I answer with a reply that usually leaves the questioner shocked. My Red Hair Vibrancy Secret is as follows: I don’t wash it.
Well I wouldn’t say that I completely don’t wash it – I only clean my hair once a month for a total of twelve washes per year. My monthly cleanse isn’t even a “washing” per se. The only reason why my hair is getting wet is to wash the dye out from my monthly at home coloring. I say that it isn’t a washing because I consider “washing your hair” to mean that you use shampoo to do it, which I also don’t do. I just use a colored hair friendly conditioner, let it sit for a good three to five minutes, and then rinse.
“But doesn’t it get greasy?” Is the question that usually follows my spiel about not washing my hair and I’m always happy to answer with a big fat NO. Frankly, I don’t know how my hair hasn’t gotten disgustingly oily from my lack of hygiene for it but I’ve never experienced oil or grease even when I was washing my hair regularly. It kind of amazes me because I use product almost every day -a Fiji styling oil. It is kind of shocking that even with a handful of oil going into my hair daily, my locks still remain a normal and healthy texture.
I’ve heard many times that your hair isn’t meant to be washed and it will naturally clean itself which I suppose rings true for me. On top of not having an issue with oil or grease, I also have no trouble with odor, as well. I swear, I’m some type of hair anomaly because I’ve never had anyone tell me that my hair smells and I’m a smoker, for god’s sake! I’ve rested my head on my boyfriend’s shoulder thousands of times since we’ve been dating and he’s never once said anything about it smelling. I know he would, too, considering he likes to complain about my morning breath every day. -__-
So is my hair some type of miracle? Maybe. But more likely than not, my body has just become used to my no washing preferences and adapted to it. I’ve been steadily not washing my hair for close to a year now and have never encountered any type of issue with it. Thanks to my lack of hair hygiene, my beloved locks remain vibrant, bright, and red hot until I need to give my roots a touch up. Hey, whatever works!

My Red Hair Vibrancy Secret is out! A little disgusting? Somewhat. Effective? Hell yeah! What is your secret to maintaining freshly dyed hair? Who else doesn’t wash their hair frequently? I wanna hear from all of you, so leave me a comment and let’s chat! Much love. -Sarah
heyyyy I dyed my hair last year all red like really fresh red so I used Loreal hicolor for dark hairs my hairs are really long so i used 3 tubes of that and in 3 go I got my proper red color so my hairs started getting greasy every third day so what i did i got conditioner for color hairs and got a semi permanent color as well and mix them both so then every time I wash my hairs I use that color conditioner That way my hair got more nice and color got more fresh and vibrant π I hope that make sense which i tryin write π

Your hair never gets oily because your hair is not supposed to be washed. Human hair is supposedly self cleaning however we muck around with it so much with so many shampoos, products etc… that it strips our natural oils out and it produces the disgusting stuff we get when we wash our hair. Your hair is probably much healthier than the average persons, there are people who haven’t washed their hair in years and claim it’s the secret to healthy glossy locks.

Interesting, do you use dry shampoo?

I used to, but not anymore. Sometimes if I really feel like my hair needs refreshed I’ll use it but it’s a rare occasion that I do!

The less you washyour hair, the less it gets ‘greasy’ because it holds in all the natural oils. Its actually really badfor your hair to wash it every day etc π

It’s kind of crazy because I’m such a germophobe that people have questioned how I can handle not washing my hair – if it did get greasy I don’t think I could stand it lol

I am terrible for washing my hair! And because I wash my hair so much it gets greasy so easily, so I very much envy your hair! lol

I’m with you completely on this one. I wash my hair once a month. Sometimes just with rainwater.

It is never greasy or dry. It sits in that nice place in between. Glossy and big. Washing always spells disaster. Tomorrow though, I’m having it cut and coloured. Watch this space.

yes, mine too!! People have asked me before if they can touch my hair and always compliment me on the texture of it which is such a sigh of relief haha I would be so embarrassed if their hand came away oily! post some pics of your new do! π

I KNOW!! I’ll never forget the one time I went shopping and a Victoria’s Secret employee got right in my face to stare at them and it was so off putting I complained about it which is something I really try to avoid doing!

Damn these people. Seriously. What’s wrong with them. The same has happened to me with my tattoos. Some people think it means they can just walk up and touch me. WTF??

Don’t even get me started on my tattoos!! I swear every other person is always asking me “did that hurt?” Same with my piercings too. What do they expect to hear? That it felt like getting a massage?! morons. -__-

Yay. I tell them I fell asleep and they look dumbfounded. Crazy. In total, I’ve had, let me think, 28 piercings. Yep, 28 and now not a single one left.

Yes. Now of course, I’m tattooed on the back of my neck and so probably wouldn’t consider it again.

Ditto. I hardly wash my hair, which is the best thing I have learned to care for my curly hair.

It’s the best! Washing my hair was never pleasant for me even when I was doing it – I’m all about cold water washes to keep my hair vibrant lol I’m so dedicated to the red! π

Have you ever tried Henna? It gives a vibrant red, too. I use it mainly to condition. I am technically dyeing my hair, but you can only see the red in the sun because my hair is dark brown.

Honestly, I think it might be lol I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that I smoke and my hair never latches on to that smell. I was at a bonfire for the Super Bowl and that didn’t make my hair smell either! They should do medical studies on me lol and thank you so much! They’re my pride and joy! β€

Hi, your hair is lovely. I try not to wash my hair more than two times a week and it usually looks best after a couple of days.

Thank you so much! I know a lot of people that follow the two times per week rule and their hair is always fabulous!

I wish I could say the same. I think maybe texture has a role in this? I only wash my hair every other day but I have to wash my bangs daily because my forehead is incredibly oil and my bangs naturally pick all that up. I have fine hair but a thick head of hair in general. I was told that for people with very oily scalps, not washing it could result in clogged hair follicles which becomes more damaging than using the ‘poo.
If I go three days without shampoo my head starts smelling musty, my roots are super oily, and my fine hair clumps together and has no body whatsoever. I truly envy the fact your hair doesn’t smell or get greasy! π

Hmmmm, interesting. Do you use special shampoos and products for your hair or does it just kind of get oily anyway? I have no oily hair experience to base advice off of!

Nope, no products! I don’t even blow dry my hair. The only thing that is used on occasion is dry shampoo.
